My husband and I chose to go with Jill Magoffin because her personality was such a strong match for what we were looking for to support us during labor. Jill completed 2 prepartum home visits to get to know us, figure out our goals, and do some newborn care training. She also drafted birth preferences for us based on what we discussed. Jill also shared her perspective on vacuum assisted delivery when I had initially voice that I wanted to avoid it. In her experience as a doula, she saw it as a beneficial intervention in very specific birthing situations in the past. This information was invaluable for my delivery as I did eventually require the vacuum in order to avoid the C-section.

Although we were hoping for a spontaneous labor, it never came, so I entered the hospital for an induction. Even though I wasn't in active labor, Jill arrived promptly to decorate my hospital room with lights in order to make it a calm, soothing place. She returned when I was an active labor and spent more than 24 hours with us. She was truly hands-on, standing on my hospital bed using a rebozo on my abdomen when my mobility was limited by the epidural. When hospital staff came into my room and recommended a change of position, Jill had already gotten me into that pose.

During the active pushing phase, she was a constant cheerleader. She also took photos of the delivery. After the baby was born, she helped with initial breastfeeding. In the postpartum period, she came to our home to answer any newborn care questions we had. Once you are her client, you have an open door for texting and calls to her for postpartum & newborn guidance.

Overall, Jill was everything we could have asked for in a doula. Looking back, we are incredibly thankful and fortunate that she was even available for us. In addition to her years of experience, she has a wonderful personality and a terrific sense of humor.
