Megan helped me to feel safe and comfortable during both my first and second births. She was calm and reassuring. She told me my contractions were beautiful. She did an amazing hip squeeze. She timed contractions. She worked with my husband and supported him. She let me rest my arms on her during my toughest contractions (so I was upright and forward!), and she showed my husband how to do the same. She held my leg as I was crowning and she laughed at my birth jokes.
She reassured me during my newborn's first feed. She expertly swaddled my baby and settled us into bed and bassinet together. She brought cheese and crackers to my bedside. She paid attention and looked for ways to be helpful. She was resourceful without being worried when plans changed. She was joyful, with a reverance for birth, newborns and motherhood.
I had done a lot of other preparation for my births, such as pelvic floor physiotherapy, prenatal yoga, prenatal massage, birth prep classes, and reading lots of books (such as Ina May's Guide to Childbirth), but having Megan there when it came time to give birth helped so much. To give myself over to the birth, I couldn't be thinking about everything I had learned, so Megan was there to guide me instead. She was a guide during a transformative journey.
I would highly recommend hiring a doula, and I would particularly recommend hiring Megan.
