Melissa has attended two of my three births. I would whole heatedly recommend her to anyone. she is knowledgable, with many years of experience. She is kind, calm, and the perfect support help for myself and husband. Having Melissa there I was able to relax, knowing she would help me think through all the stuff i had practiced. Before my births, we told her what we wanted from her and she was completely respectful of that, She was right by my side through a very long labor with the first, even after attending another birth right before mine. Melissa has a sweet yet strong dimeanor that is perfect for the support needed in labor. She makes you feel like you have been friends forever, and that helps trust. The whole time she was offering support, she was my husbands and my strength. She took care of me, and all outside details that I couldn't attend to, I know, without doubt that my birthing experience wouldn have had a very different outcome had she not been there, I truly believe Melissa is one of a kind when it comes to doulas. She is amazing!!
I could write for hours about how much I love Melissa Chappell as a person and a doula. I remember the first time I met with her, when I was pregnant with my first child, to figure out if having her as a doula (and having a doula at all) was the right fit for me. Melissa was very genuine and unassuming. I expressed some of my fears of childbirth and my desire to skip the epidural, and she instilled in me such a confidence and "you've got this" attitude that has never left me. She was very thorough and professional during our appointments, yet I felt like she was my best friend. Knowing she was on call for any quesitons or concerns I had leading up to the birth of my child was a huge relief. When I went into labor, Melissa came right away, made me a delicious, healthy breakfast and helped me through every contraction with counterpressure and positioning that made the pain so much less intense. What I loved was that she worked with my instincts and my body -- she never told me I needed to move or breathe in a certain way but guided and helped me through what my body needed to do. My labor turned out to be 36 hours long. Melissa remained calm, positive and present throughout the entire thing -- that is her personality. She has a calming, encouraging effect on people. She was the perfect balance between hands-on help and giving me space when needed. Having her at the hospital was empowering. She knew what we wanted and she communicated with the hospital staff to help it happen. I had a crazy-fast 2nd birth which ended up being an unplanned home-birth. I was beyond grateful Melissa was there to help deliver my baby. Again, she helped make a potentially scary experience a beautiful one. I had no fear when I was in my closet pushing my baby out for her to catch. I can't imagine not having Melissa at one of my births. I think they would have turned out much differently. My husband thinks she is as much of an asset to our birthing experiences as I do!
As soon as we found out that my husband would have to be gone at basic training for the birth of our second son we started searching for solutions to help ease the anxiety. I wanted to find a doula that would be supportive in my desire to have an epidural and my specific hopes for my birthing experience. When I first met with Melissa she was so open, understanding and reassuring. Her warmth and professionalism was exactly what I was hoping for!! She met with us and listened with such genuine care. We met another time and went over the plan in more detail. She helped me to feel I had the support I needed before, during, and after the birth of my son. I was so impressed with Melissa. At the hospital she was calm, warm, happy, flexible, respectful, positive, and professional. I felt like she was 100% my advocate. She used calming techniques that eased my anxiety and gave me continued reassurances and reminders exactly when I needed them. She was sensitive to my needs. The day couldn’t have worked out any smoother! My husband and I were so grateful we had found her and for her service. It was exactly what we needed. I cant say enough good about Melissa! Having Melissa for my doula was the best thing I could have done hands down! Emily Timothy
Melissa was my doula for my first home birth. She was so patient and kind. She was with me every step of the way. A week and a half before I had the baby, I went into false labor. But Melissa was there with patience and an encouraging word. When I went into labor for real, she came right over. She jumped right in, helping when I didn't know what I wanted or needed. She encouraged me and made me feel very empowered. She massaged and did pressure points exactly where I needed it. She was the perfect team player, doing what was best for me, my husband, our baby, and my midwife. I would very highly recommend Melissa to anybody who is looking for a doula. She is one of the most loving and gentle people I know, as well as someone who will make you feel like you can accomplish anything. She loves helping women, and loves birth. She is just a wonderful, wonderful person.
From the moment I met Melissa, I knew she was the woman I wanted as my doula. She has a very friendly yet professional demeanor. She was at my first two births. My first one did not go at all as planned. I ended up getting an epidural after 12 hours of laboring during a pitocin induction, but I still am so very glad I had her by my side through all of it. She was an invaluable resource to both myself and my husband. There were several times she spoke up on my behalf. I am an OB nurse myself, but being a woman in labor gives you a totally different view on things. I was very thankful to have her there for me, to make my wishes known to all the staff. She was so supportive. She talked me through some very hard moments in both births. I look back on both births in a very positive light, and a lot of that is due to Melissa and all that she was for me in those precious moments of labor and delivery. I highly recommend her to anyone considering a doula.
