I have always know I wanted a birth doula, due to highly medicalized, fear driven culture surrounding birth. So when my husband I became pregnant, it was time to pick our doula. On our first meeting, even before we were Dana's clients, she gave us such amazing information. Recommendations for home birth midwives, hospital midwives, birth centers and so much more.Questions to ask them all and any place we were considering to give birth. And this was because we were not happy with our OBG.
These were questions I had not seen online, in books or anywhere. But, they helped us see if a place or person were the right fit for us. And when we became her clients, she gave me heaps of advice, to help with my medical visits with things I should ask my midwives and nutrition for my pregnancy. So when we finally, decided on our birth team, we were so happy with the practice Dana recommended. Which made a difference as our little one came early. But, due to the practice we were with, they allowed me to labor naturally and push him out. In all honesty, in any other practice we may not have been given such latitude. I would have been scheduled for a c-section very quickly. So, once I told Dana that I was experiencing contractions. She told us what to do, as we were a bit in denial that I had gone into labour.
It was such a blessing to have her there. She coached me on how to work through my contractions, how to reserve my energy till it was time to push and the pushing itself. She also had aromatherapy, homeopathy, emotional and psychological support tools for me and my husband. And they worked as a team to make sure one person was up with me all the time. For anyone who is considering having Dana as a doula. I would say that not only will you been amazed at how awesome she is, you will get more than you expect in terms of her knowledge, caring for her clients and just kindness. She helped me during my pregnancy, during the labor and delivery and after as well.
Dana was a great help throughout my pregnancy and the birth of my son. Around the middle of my pregnancy, my husband and I realized that we were very naive and afraid about child birth. I was terrified by all of the horror stories I had heard and he was clueless. I knew that he would be a mess watching me in pain. I wanted him to have a wonderful birth experience whether or not I would have that. We decided to hire a doula so that she could take care of me and allow my husband to worry less while having his own 'birth partner' as an additional support person. Dana was highly recommended by a mutal friend of ours. As soon as we met her, I felt her calming presence. She shared so many great things with us during the first meeting. I felt empowered when she suggested that I change care providers since I mentioned that I wasn't comfortable with my OB. She gave me recommendations and I found a practice and a hospital that I was completely happy with. After we hired her, she was available for all of my questions throughout the rest of my pregnancy. She was also very dilligent about making sure I was prepared for my prenatal appointments, prenatal tests and the upcoming labor and birth experience. I ended up having an emergency induction 2 1/2 weeks before my due date and Dana was available without hesitation. She met my husband and I at the hospital and immediately made me feel relaxed and encouraged me to not be afraid. During the induction and labor process she was able to navigate us through all of the medical procedures that came up. Her support, calm demeanor and knowledge of birth process really helped me stay focused, comfortable, calm and confident. I highly recommend having a skilled doula like Dana with you for support and guidance.
If it hadn't been for Dana I don't know what we would have done.
She is an INCREDIBLE doula, an amazing, caring person, an empathic soul, a knowledgeable professional.
She is EVERYTHING you need in a doula and more.
As much as you plan you delivery there is so much that is out of your hands. I had back labor and a very very long labor (34 hours). Dana was at our side the entire time.
Back Labor is a bitch and it takes longer, it is more painful and you need as much help and support as possible. She helped me, my husband and my mom go through it.
After two sleepless nights you would think she would have mentioned how exhausted she was, instead she kept massaging my feet, giving me nice things to smell and encouraging me. She helped my husband help me, she did everything she could to help my baby turn around (she was very stubborn!).
WIthout Dana I don't know what I would have done. Will defnitly hire her again for my next baby!
I have a lot to say about Dana and I wrote my birth story in my blog, so if you want more details go to my blog: awokenbeauty.com
MY EXPERIENCE GOES ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE YEAR 2002. DANA WREN WAS THEN A STUDENT DOULA AND THIS WAS GOING TO BE THE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFE TIME BECAUSE I WAS NOW NEEDING HER TO HELP ME GIVE NATURAL BIRTH TO MY SECOND SET OF TWINS - I DELIVERED MY FIRST TWO CHILDREN VAGINALLY, THEN I WAS PREGNANT WITH TWIN GIRLS AND WAS TALKED INTO A C-SECTION BY MY DOCTOR. WHEN I GOT PREGNANT WITH MY TWIN BOYS I SAID I WILL NEVER GO THROUGH A C-SECTION AGAIN. I LOOKED FOR A GOOD HOSPITAL TO HELP ME GIVE NATURAL BIRTH AND WAS REFERRED TO DANA WREN A STUDENT DOULA AT THE TIME. WELL TO CUT TO THE CHASE DANA WAS THE ABSOLUTE BLESSING ME AND MY HUSBAND NEEDED. SHE REACHED THE HOSPITAL BEFORE ME WHEN I CALLED TO SAY MY WATER BROKE. SHE HAD ALREADY COACHED ME AND MY HUSBAND SO WE WERE PREPARED. I GAVE NATURAL BIRTH TO TWIN BOYS SUCCESSFULLY WITH HER HELP 3 MINUTES APART AT PARKS SLOPES HOSPITAL IN BROOKLYN. MY LABOR WAS SO SMOOTH. SHE KEPT ME CALM, COOL AND COLLECTIVE. DANA WAS IN MY ROOM BEFORE I GAVE BIRTH ASSISTING ME TOTALLY TO KEEP ME FOCUSED AND PREPARED FOR NATURAL BIRTH. SHE HAD ME SAFELY OFF THE MONITOR IN THE SHOWER, TOILET, A SAFE EXERCISE BALL WHICH I SAT IN FOR COMFORT, A ROCKING CHAIR SO MANY THINGS SHE DID. SHE MASSAGED ME WITH OILS AND SHE MADE SURE I KEPT UP WITH MY BREATHING. I STILL HAVE MY DIARY GIVEN TO ME BY DANA OF MY JOURNEY WITH HER. I COULD HAVE NEVER DID IT WITHOUT HER. MY SONS WEIGHED 6 POUNDS 8 OUNCES AND 7 POUNDS AND 8 OUNCES. IT WAS SOME KIND OF PREGNANCY. LOL. DANA IS A DELIGHTFUL PLEASURE IN ANYONE GIVING BIRTH FOR THE FIRST OR LAST TIME. YOU WOULD BE CRAZY TO LOOK ANY WHERE ELSE. SHE IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST AND I RECOMMEND HER TO ANYONE 1 BILLION %. BLESSINGS QUEEN DANA - ONE LOVE ALWAYS
Dana came highly recommended by a good friend of mine whom I trust and so I trusted Dana. Now having gone through the experience myself, I also highly recommend Dana to those looking for a great doula. I got the natural birth I wanted but feel that I would have been in good hands had the experience gone differently (which was often the case for most of my friends). Dana has a confidence, without being preachy or bossy, that gave me assurance during the days leading up to and during the birth process. I hired Dana at 35 wks, pretty late in the game, but feel that the investment was worth it. My active labor lasted about 9 hours: 6 hours at home, 30 min. drive to the hospital, and only 2 hours at the hospital before the baby was born. The key was staying at home as long as possible to avoid interventions at the hospital that may or may not be necessary for the mother's or baby's health but are the automatic procedures the hospital has for liability reasons. Laboring at home (esp. when your hospital is in another borough, and the car that you're borrowing from a friend has had its "check engine" light on, and your mother is in the other room wondering when we're going to call 9-1-1 to get an ambulance) can be scary, but my husband and I both trusted Dana to know the signs for when to jump in the car to go. Plus I can't imagine anything worse (short of delivering the baby in the car which is not that common) than getting to the hospital and being turned away because you're not dilated enough to be admitted. The other key was having Dana be the in-my-face-but-nice coach during contractions for the breathing techniques needed to cope with pain and avoid pushing before my cervix was ready. And despite being a petite woman, Dana is incredibly strong and I felt she almost could have carried me through the hospital doors. Her strong hands massaged me through the back pains and her steady hand was with me until the baby was delivered.
Dana was the perfect match for me. Her calm presence was exactly what I needed post birth. Dana took such great care of me and helped me get my strength back by suggesting healthy foods to eat and planning delicious meals for me. Dana provided me with helpful tips and guidance to nurse my baby with care and ease. She walked me through swaddling, using the baby carrier, bathing, and gave me the extra confidence to do things on my own. Her tips were extremely useful and used them throughout my daughter's early development. I passed them on to my sister. We developed a great bond and lucky to have met her.
Dana has been wonderful in providing the services of placenta encapsulation. I dropped off the placenta to her in Brooklyn and she did the rest which included dehydrating, pulverizing, and encapsulating the placenta. She also dehydrated the umbilical cord into what she called an “umbilical cord cookie” to have as a cherished memory of the bond that my son once shared with my wife. :) When she was done processing it she simply sent it to us by mail along with a heartfelt letter of congratulations for our new arrival. I would unhesitatingly utilize her services for our future placenta encapsulation needs. She was great! Thank you Dana!
I used Dana Wren's services for placenta encapsulation. In addition to being very information about the process, I felt that Dana was a great resource of calm and warmth in a time of uncertainty. Dana helped me through being almost two weeks overdue. Even though I was only having placenta encapsulation done, Dana gave me suggestions and tips for dealing with being overdue and some things to try to induce labor. Dana always answered questions promptly, and was always available to talk. I would recommend her services to anyone. From my limited experience, I would be confident in Dana as a doula, and I found her placenta encapsulation services to be excellent. Thanks!!!!
Dana was so integral to my very positive birth experience. It would be hard to imagine trying to have an unmedicated birth without her. She was just amazing – strong, positive, calm and so so knowledgable.
From the time we hired her, she was always available to talk. She checked in with me often, giving support and asking for updates. Unfortunately I was two weeks past my due date and Dana was amazing through this. I was probably in contact with her almost daily. We talked about my options – she was great at providing the information and allowing us the make the decisions. We went through a list of things I should do to facilitate labor, but unfortunately nothing worked and I had to be induced. I knew it would be really hard to go through the birth unmedicated after Pitocin, but Dana was positive throughout. Once I was scheduled to go in to be induced, Dana was there with us the entire time- with me and my partner, showing him what to do, and always making sure I was ok. She was amazing at navigating the process, telling us what was about to happen, letting us know what our choices were. Through each contraction, it always seemed like she knew exactly what I needed. She showed me how to work through the pain, knowing when to massage, when to apply pressure, and when to shift me. Physically and mentally I was amazed at her strength. In the 15+ hours we were at the birthing room with nurses and the doctors coming in and out, she was an unwavering support and remained incredibly calm throughout.
I feel so lucky to have to had Dana, and without a a doubt, if I have another child, I will want Dana there!
Dana was amazing and I can't imagine what we would have done without her. She knows her stuff so you can ask her anything but she makes sure to let you know that it's your birth and she'll be whatever kind of supporter you need. This was my second birth so I knew that I needed someone with a strong personality who could take control when/if I started freaking out and she asked enough questions and spent enough time with me in the months before to know exactly what to do. When the day came I waited a bit too long to call her but she rushed right over and despite me wanting to stay at home for as long as possible, she knew that we needed to get to teh hospital right away. Well within an hour of her arriving she was delivering my baby in the car in route to the hospital because he just wouldn't wait!! So she was a literal life saver, knowing exactly what to do while still making sure to keep me calm under the circumstances. I love her!
Dana was our Doula for both my children's births. I can not say enough fabulous things about her!!! I had two all natural births, and I really credit alot of that to the fact that Dana put me at such EASE and made me not fear any pain but embrace it and work with it to birth naturally. She is so calm, patient, intuitive, and reassuring. I could really depend on her to just hold me and walk me through my contractions. She really adapted to the way I wanted to move and labor, and was right there supporting me 100%. My husband, who before we had kids never even heard of a Doula, now swears by having one, thanks to Dana. Dana also would call me and check in alot before the births and was always there for me to call with questions about anything before the baby arrived. I really felt elated to birth with Dana, she is amazing.
Having Dana at my birth made all the difference. She truly was a godsent when I was in early labor. The fact that I could call her and she would help me get through each contraction was amazing. Forever I will remeber the moment when she told me that I was in actual labour and that I would have my babies that day. AS my labour prgressed she was right there. She always knew what I needed at that time. I was amazed with her strength. I was totally able to lean on her with every contraction. Dana wa the reason I had such a successful birth. If I have more kids I would have to have her there.
I hight recomend her fro post pardum as well. For the first 2 weeks it was the highlight of my day when she was coming. I loved the food she made. I loved that she was the one person that came over that I did not have to entertain she just knew how to take care of me. She totally taught me how to nurse twins at the same time.
All in all Dana is priceless.
Dana was our doula with our second baby. My first birth experience was a little traumatic after a long back labor, I ended up having an epidural. For our second baby we really wanted to have an unmedicated labor so we looked for an experienced doula to help us.
Since we first met Dana we really liked her positive energy and relaxing attitude. After interviewing three more doulas we could tell that Dana had a lot of experience and looked very confident talking about how to handle a labor. She always had the right positive comment that reassured me that I could have a natural child birth besides she was always available to answer any questions that we had. During labor, she was an amazing support. She arrived at the right moment, we had a great communication even though most of the time I was not able to talk she could understand my requests and along with my husband they were really a support team. She had every little detail taken care of, from the scent to stop my nausea to the agave honey to keep my energy level up. My second labor was much shorter than the first one and I am sure that thanks to how Dana walked us trough the whole process things went much more faster and at the end we got our wonderful natural child birth. We are so thankful to Dana and we definitely believe that everyone deserves a Dana.
I had Dana Wren for the birth of both of my sons. My first birth with her was a typical 15 hour haul, she came to my house and labored with me for several hours and then she made the call to go to the birthing center. The things that stand out most to me about Dana is her strength and calm. She never tired from massaging me, holding me up or bracing my legs. Meanwhile my 6' husband was wiped out several times. He appreciated having her there the most because she made sure that he was an integrated part of the delivery of our son.
For our second son, the birth was fast and furious. She coached me over the phone--and it worked. We met at the birthing center and she was the calm in the storm. She is a ROCK. I definately couldn' have had such successful drug-less births without her, I never even though about drugs with her--she let me know i could do it, showed me how and I did it--twice! One of the most striking experiences I had with Dana, was meeting up with her in my post-pardum appointment. Her body is very petite--I was shocked because during my two births she was as big and strong as mother earth. This is her calling and she does it like a pro!
I was extremely fortunate to have Dana as my doula at the births of both of my daughters. With my first birth, she arrived just in time to ease my back labor with massage and she helped me get to a place where I could manage the contractions. She kept me home as long as possible, and I had a very positive unmedicated birth experience despite having to deliver in the OR due to overcrowding at the hospital. I'm not sure I could have gone drug-free without her support and encouragement.
I had a wonderful birth experience with my second child at a birthing center with a midwife. Again, Dana kept me grounded and was a wonderful coach. Even though my children are five years apart, I felt like we picked up where we left off as if no time had passed. Dana is compassionate, knowledgable, and seemed to know just what I needed at any given time--before, during, and after labor. She provided phone support in my final weeks and I turned to her several times for advice. My husband was also grateful to have her, as he could focus on providing emotional support while she coached me.
Thanks to Dana, I found strength I didn't know I had. Giving birth naturally was empowering, and I owe a lot to Dana in helping me achieve the births I wanted.
