I was so lucky to have met Heather! She came to my house to let me borrow a Hypno Birthing book (out of the kindness of her heart) I did not even know she was a Doula. We started chatting (as women always do) and she told me she was a Doula after I mentioned I was looking for a Doula for my birth. We hit it off really well and I asked her if she was available. I was pleased to hear that she was!!!
I had excess fluid during my pregnancy which means you have early contractions. I went to the hospital too early and Heather still met me there. They sent me home that night. The night I went into labor I still was not sure it was TRUE labor. However when I called Heather and she heard my breathing she said I htink this is it! She met me at the hospital at 5am on April 1st. It was the hardest thing I have ever done having a drug free birth... And I can tell you without a doubt in my mind. without Heather and her amazing support there is NO WAY I could have done it. We were in the zone and she talked me through every single contractions when I was ready to give up!! She was incredible! A rock, a supporting loving and kind Doula. I HIGHLY recommend hiring her she is truly AMAZING!!!!
From our first day meeting, to the postpartum visits, Heather was professional, knowledgeable and nurturing! She made my husband and I feel at ease and comfortable. I went into labor feeling more confident and secure in my birth plan of an all natural unmedicated hospital birth, which I was able to do. Everything in my birth plan went accordingly and I 100% believe that having Heather as our doula was one of the main reasons it did!
Throughout the entire process, she was always on time and never made me feel rushed or like I had a time limit on our visits. And when it came to the BIG DAY, Heather was by my side for 30 hours! Everything she did to help me with the pain worked and because of that I was able to labor at home until I was 8cm dilated.
After we came home from the hospital, Heather made sure to check on me multiple times and even brought my husband and I a delicious homemade dinner! The photos she captured during the birth she put on a CD for us and provided us a timeline of our daughters birth. Something I obviously would not have had if it wasn't for her, and something I will truly treasure forever!
The whole experience having Heather as my birth doula is one I will remember forever. I will definitely want her to be my birth doula again for my next child!
My husband and I felt encouraged and supported by Heather before, during, and after our son's birth. She was always calm, positive, kind, and helpful. I was a little frightened that, as with so many people who had given birth before, she would be opinionated and judgy. But from the first time I met Heather, she was mild, open, an active listener, and never in any way judgemental. What a relief!
Before our son was born, I asked her several questions about controversial topics. She always emailed me research-based articles representing all sides of issues: vaccinations, pediatricians, etc. She also helped me get compose a birth plan.
During the birth, I had moments of surprise and stress. My husband and Mom were on hand. Everyone did whatever they could to help. Heather helped in just the right way: unobtrusive to my husband, mom or I; but when needed, happy to be on the front lines. She was such a unflappably calm, positive pressence.
After delivery, she visited us a day later and at home a week later. We went over the events of the birth, looked at the pictures she had taken, and received a meal. We felt officially welcomed to parenthood, going over our first week at home with our little man. She left us with numerous resources for support.
It is such a rare thing to have someone walk a parent-related road with you without agenda, opinion, or superiority; but instead with kindness and care. I so value our time with Heather, and recommend her to anyone wishing to have a doula.
Let me begin by highly recommending Heather’s doula services! If I give birth again I will certainly hire her again. I was looking for a doula who would assist me in a natural birth, with a heavy emphasis on massage/counter-pressure and soothing presence. Heather has a calm and gentle demeanor and took the time to listen to me and my needs. She even researched doctors and who accepted my insurance and were accepting new patients! I thought I was getting a “basic” package, but she went above and beyond.
As far as the labor and delivery went- I had no problem getting a hold of Heather when I went into labor. She met me at the hospital with her birthing ball, massage sock and music- all which worked miracles. This was my third baby and in hindsight it was my easiest and shortest labor, but I can’t help but attribute that to her assistance. She recommended positions I never tried before and before I knew it the baby was on her way (actually- the baby’s head made it out even before the doctor could get in the room)!
One of the treasures we got with the pregnancy were great photos. Now, Heather claims she isn’t a photographer but I thought the pictures came out great, and without a third family member there to do it, she was able to capture our daughter’s first moments with both parents.
Even though I thought I was a pro at breastfeeding I actually missed the obvious signs in the hospital, the first few days we were home, and during Heather’s postpartum visit that my daughter was tongue-tied. I asked Heather for her input and she helped me trust my gut, and I was able to get that fixed the following day.
Having done all 3 births with a doula, I simply know no other way to do pregnancy, labor and delivery, and postpartum. So as you can see, Heather was available and valuable for the time I had her as a doula. If she is available, book her now!!
I highly recommend Heather Bruhn to any one looking for a doula that gives you your personal space. She allows you to control your birth plan and doesn't push her own agenda on you. She is great at providing information on birth, breastfeeding etc. On the day of birth she gave me the support I was looking for: both mentally and physically. Heather went up and beyond to make sure my husband and I were comfortable at all stages of labor. She helped us get through it! I can't thank her enough! :)
We had a wonderful experience with Heather as our Doula! I desired a natural birth without an epidural but going in I told Heather that there was a possibility that I would request one if the pain was too much for me to handle. This is our first child so I didn't know what to expect. Heather was very supportive and told me that she would be there and would help me through the process no matter what we decided. She also said that she wouldn't think anything less of me if I did end up request an epidural. In the end with Heather and my husband's support we were able to achieve a natural birth with no epidural (despite being induced). I know if we didn't have Heather I probably would have caved and requested one. Heather was also wonderful with the pre/post birth meetings. She discussed the birthing process and was very informative and knowledgeable. She gave my husband tips to help me manage the pain during labor and had a birthing ball at the hospital for me to use. She was available for any questions we had day or night. Overall what a wonderful experience we had and I'm very thankful Heather was our Doula! When we are ready for baby #2 we will definitely be giving you a call. We gained a special friend in the process too!
