Having Melany through delivery was probably the smartest thing I did preparing for my first birth experience. My husband and I were unable to take birthing classes together due to his traveling shedule. We both educated ourselves as much as possible to prepare but had we not decided to use a doula, we still would have been totally lost on game day.
We both learned so much the day our baby girl came and had Melany not been there, we probably only would have received the medical/western opinion of the professionals at the hospital.
Melany was a great coach. She was patient and calm through the whole experience. She assisted the nurses with suggesting different positions, she had a wealth of suggestions for helping to ease tension and pain that were natural. She also was completely supportive when I chose to derail from my original drugless birth plan. She hung with me through 20hrs of labor, 4hrs of pushing and hung around well after to give me some breast feeding lessons.
I highly recommend working with a doula, especially for your first, if for no other reason than to get a 360 degree view of what the birthing process is like. Melany is an excellent doula for anyone wanting more a calm, stress-free energy in the room.
Melany Willis was a fantastic choice as doula for my family. As first time parents we had many questions and concerns about what to expect from the entire birth process. Melany was more than happy to answer these questions and prepare us for the big day. Little did we know that the "big day" would turn into 39 hours of labor - the first 24 hours being completely unmedicated! Melany stood by our side and helped as I supported my wife from bedside to the hospital shower and bathtub. She showed us excercises to help relieve the pain during contractions. When we made the decision for an epidural we spoke with Melany before moving forward.
I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a doula. She is also a fantastic photographer and captured all of the special, candid moments between my wife and myself during the birth. Melany Willis was a terrific doula, and we know we made the right choice with her!
Melany did a fantastic job for us! In our meetings leading up to birth, I grew very comfortable with her. She asked lots of questions about how I'd like her to support me, and what was expected of her. I hadn't even thought of many of these questions myself, so I was glad she asked. She helped me get my birth plan together, and calmed leftover anxiety I had from my previous (somewhat traumatic) birth.
I ended up having a 36+ hour labor. Melany came by my house while I was in early labor. She gave me advice on how to move things along, and helped us determine when to head to the birthing center. Once we were there and things were really moving along, she was an amazing help! She was gentle and encouraging, helping me find calmness and perspective. She put a tremendous amount of physical effort in, squeezing my hips, letting me lean and put my weight on her, and almost letting me break her hand while pushing! She had a lot of knowledge about laboring positions, and seemed to intuitively know when I needed a change. She was most definitely in it for the long haul right along with us, and I have no doubt that we couldn't have done it without her. I highly recommend Melany!
