Open Arms Volunteer Doula
Certified through both DONA and PALS, I am passionate about helping families have their best birth possible. I am a mother to three beautiful kids, and became a doula because I want others to have the support I had during my own births! Having experienced the tragedy of miscarriage, I understand the extra anxiety pregnant families may feel during their subsequent pregnancies. In that light I will bring a special sensitivity to your prenatal and birth experience. When I am not doula'ing, I spend my days working in Human Resources, chasing my rugrats, and working on DIY house projects with my husband. See www.soundheartbeats.com for more details.

Kiara was amazing! She was an awesome support for us because we were looking for someone who could intuitively assist us with my labor even when I myself didn't know what I needed or wanted. She helped us with everything from our birthplan to being available for questions after the birth. Kiara's approach is individualized to suit your birthplan. She is respectful in all aspects of the planning. My husband and I felt we were in good hands the entire time. Best of all her upbeat and caring personality makes you feel secure and confident.
My name is Debbie and when my wife and I found out she was expecting our first daughter, we were ecstatic! We were also petrified of the unchartered territory of the birth process and it wasn't long until we decided that we needed a doula. As we contemplated what our needs were, it became apparent that even though I wasn't the one giving birth I needed someone to help me navigate the unknown in order to be the best support for my laboring wife.
We interviewed 3 doulas- all who were amazing people, with kind souls and a calming knowledge of this wondrous miracle. Kiara was our third interview and when she left we had no doubt. A mother of 3, with her own birth stories behind her combined with her no nonsense and humorous outlook on life she left us profoundly certain that we could share this experience with her.
We are so thankful for her guidance answering random texts of worry in the weeks preceeding the delivery and when the day came, having her quickly by our sides made such a difference in the confidence both of us felt in being able to handle anything that would come our way. Her presence was calming, reassuring and, of course, comedically relieving. My role of communicating to the doctors and nurses what was best for my wife and our experience was so much easier with Kiara there to discuss ideas, best practice and our birth plan. She took photos, helped us understand the progression of the birth and really came in to encourage that final stretch of pushing and effort that seems insurmountable as my wife labored hard to welcome this new life into our family.
She stayed with me as they carted my wife away for an unexpected surgery to repair the damage of labor- the room cleared quickly and completely. I was so thankful for Kiara's companionship as I held my newborn miracle to my chest, comforted by Kiara's reassurance that all would be well, and it was. Kiara was everything we hoped she would be!
When we found out that we were going to have a 3rd child my wife and had a talk... Our 2nd child came extremely fast, like under 2 hours from 1st contraction to holding the baby and I realized that everyone was focused on the baby. Knowing my wife, I was a great support but it would probably help having someone who knew what she was going through to give her some extra support. I'd heard about doula's from friends who had used them, so I thought why not offer it to my wife. Any tool that could help her have a successful experience was worth. She thought it was a good idea and we started going through the list of doula's we had available to us. Kiara's resume and one other quickly floated to the top of the list and we set up interviews. It was a really tough call at that time to pick from the 2 liked. By luck, chance or faith the other person was going to be gone around the time of the birth. While we were happy at the time with our decision little did I know it would be one of the best decisions we ever made! On the day of the birth we suspected that something was up and we called Kiara to come hang out at the hospital. She had taken so much time getting to know my wife and building a friendship that she could also tell something was up. The two them walked around for what seemed like hours trying to induce labor. However it was not meant to be that afternoon... it was meant to be that evening! Once the first contraction hit we were in the car and on the phone... Kiara was there at the same time we were and jumped into action working with my wife and helping her. 70 minutes after that first contraction we were holding our amazing baby girl. Kiara was the perfect anchor for my wife especially given the speed of everything. She was our guiding star that night and helped my wife more than words will ever express. She was also a ton fun to work with through the whole pregnancy... we are people who love to laugh. She gets us!
Hiring a doula was something I knew I want to do as soon as I got pregnant. This was my first pregnancy and to be honest, I was absolutely clueless and a little terrified! I felt I could only read so many books and attend so many classes to prepare myself... I knew having someone considered to be a birth expert in the room would give me the added comfort and confidence I was searching for. I contacted Swedish, told them about myself and my husband, and they matched is with Kiara. They couldn't have done a better job. When we met, I immediately felt at ease. We laughed and got to know each other, and I felt she was just what I was looking for in a doula. We spoke and met a few times before my birth; she provided some great resource for both my husband and I. The day I went into labor she was our first call. She could tell over the phone how quickly I was progressing, and said to head to the hospital and she would meet us there. My initial labor was intense to say the least. I'd planned to go unmedicated, and Kiara did everything she could to help me get as far along without an epidural as I thought possible. After dialating 1.5 to almost 7 cm in about 3 hours, with less than 60 second breaks in between contractions, I decided on an epidural. She pushed to make sure this was the choice I wanted to make, and when there was no debate, supported my decision. 7 hours later I began pushing and my epidural had mostly worn off. I had my eyes closed for what felt like the last hour of pushing, but I heard Kiara's enthusiastic, and gentle coaching. Kiara was so supportive, encouraging and positive through out my entire birthing process, not just with me but my husband and mother as well. Her work, both with me and behind the scenes, while I was laboring, led to what I feel was an amazing experience.
Kiara was simply perfect. Being first time parents with no family in the area, we decided to hire a doula to help provide support, answer questions and reassure us. We knew right away Kiara was the right choice; she inspired trust, was down to earth and we felt comfortable sharing this incredibly personal experience with her. I also appreciated how well she listened; I never felt like she had an agenda, she simply wanted to help us achieve our goals.
When the big day came, it became so clear that we made the right decision bringing Kiara in. During the first hours when the contractions were gentle, we laughed and laughed. My wife is deathly afraid of hospitals, but Kiara was able to help keep the mood calm and keep us smiling.
When labor got difficult, she knew just what to do. From changing the position, to helping us with a breathing techniques, she jumped in when we faltered and give us a helping hand. It was also nice to get support as the husband; I was so focused on my wife, I forgot to eat and drink. Kiara was looking out for me while I cared for my wife.
For a moment at the end, when my wife was pushing, we couldn't hear the heartbeat. Seeing the medical staff look nervous and focused left us wondering if our daughter was alive. That thought is the worst feeling in the world. In that moment, my wife and I looked to Kiara: she reassured us that it was normal and we were going to be okay.
We have a happy, healthy girl in part because of Kiara's support. If you are feeling trepidation, do yourself a favor and talk to her. I couldn't imagine a better person to have on your side.
So many couples in our birth classes had the same anxiety - when do I leave for the hospital? Having a birth doula completely removed that fear for me; I didn't have to wonder because I would have someone experienced and calm there to help me!
When my husband and I first met Kiara, we knew she was the one for us (we still interviewed other doulas just to be sure). Being comfortable was our most important criteria, and Kiara felt like she could have been an old friend. She was very supportive of whatever we wanted our birth plan to be, and gave us resources to further develop our expectations.
Being comfortable together did end up being very important- I was suddenly induced just shy of 36 weeks. We went through three days of failed induction attempts, and it wasn't until my epidural failed for the third time that I was ready to throw in the towel. Being in Labor and Delivery that long meant that I cycled through a number of nurses and doctors, so it was so wonderful to have someone there with me through the whole thing! We did send Kiara home several times when we knew we would have a long wait before the next decision point, but I know at least once she lurked in the lobby instead of trying to get a nap at home because she wanted to give us space but be close enough in case something happened.
I'm glad we picked someone so calm and easy to be with, she was the right person to stay and hold my hand when my husband had to accompany our daughter to the NICU. She was good at being what I needed when I needed it. I highly recommend her.
Kiara was an invaluable part of the birth of my son. My husband and I felt confident in our decision when we chose her as she was down to earth, experienced, and frankly, someone we liked hanging out with. That last part became extremely important as I had a 35 hour labor! When you are going through this incredibly emotional, difficult, yet amazing task of giving birth to another human, you want to feel comfortable with everyone who is in the room with you. Kiara was a trooper and stayed with us to the very end with hardly any sleep. She was emotionally supportive, made us laugh, ran around getting me juice, water, snacks, etc., and made me feel like I did a great job despite a difficult labor. She was there for us during the pregnancy and answered many questions that we texted her out of the blue and has kept in touch after our baby's birth, even 6 months later. I would not hesitate to have her at the birth of my second child!
My husband and I met with Kiara and immediately decided to hire her because we felt so comfortable around her. She was always available to us during my pregnancy and when I went into labor at 1:30am she was still reachable! She met us at our house before we left for the birth center which really helped me to feel safe as I was already in active labor which happened much more quickly then I anticipated. She was a great source of calming comfort to us throughout my labor and birth. At the birth center she was constantly by my side, offering water and a cold, wet towel while I was laboring in the bath. She was very neutral and helpful while never impeding the work of the midwives. She was also great with our family members and helped maintain a calm environment for us. We love Kiara and highly recommend her to anyone who could benefit from a calming, caring presence during their baby's birth.
Kiara is an amazing doula -- we hired her for our third birth and it was the best thing we could have done. We didn't have a doula in either of the first two births -- both of which were at a hospital with midwives. This time around I was looking for someone to focus on me getting through the birth as compared to the focus on the baby which the midwives take care of! My first two kids came into the world incredibly fast and early - the 2nd was born 2 hours and 15 minutes after contractions started almost 3 weeks before his due date. We made it to the hospital but didn't have time to get the epidural I wanted. Things went so fast I felt increidbly out of control and scared. So this time around we knew we had to plan on early arrival and fast birth -- I was a wreck just thinking about giving birth this time around. Kiara was amazing -- she fully understood what I wanted and was my advocate -- she jumped at our "false" alarms, never questioning if it was time or not. We all knew things would be quick when they happened and she was on-call and ready -- meeting us within minutes of arrival at hospital multiple times. Kiara has great knowledge and techniques, she's respectful and able to bring a light hearted attitude in what was a very stressful birth. I only wish she was at my first two births!
Kiara was simply amazing - I had a complicated pregnancy and she was there every time I was hospitalized. She was supportive of not only me but my partner as well. Highly recommended. Thanks Kiara!
Having Kiara present for the birth of my son was invaluable. There are many things that didn't go the way I hoped and retrospectiely I regretted my choice of OB. But Kiara was the antitode. She was positive and reassuring. She was a great team player with my husband, keeping him from reaching a point of exhaustion. This was a huge advantage post-labor as he took the first few night shifts with the baby.
I felt comfortable with Kiara - talking with her, discussing my concerns about labor before hand, asking for what I wanted during labor - and she always responded warmly, as though I were doing her a favor.
Leading up to labor she provided some great resources; thoughtful pre-reading, along with some studies when an ultrasound came back indicating I had a big baby (which had my OB in fits).
If you're looking for someone who is gentle, positive, thoughtful, cooperative and who loves birth, then Kiara's your Doula!
I am so glad I chose Kiara as my doula! It was so essential that she was there to support not only me, but also my husband during the labor process. She gave supportive words and suggestions exactly at the right time that I needed them. She offered both emotional and physical support. Her personal experience with childbirth made her really understand the process of labor and birth, and she was patient and compassionate with what I was experiencing. She also took lots of amazing photos that we will cherish forever. I would definitely use her again and would recommend her if you need a doula!
My husband and I were hesitant to hire a doula because we weren't sure if it was necessary - however, I'm so grateful we ended up hiring Kiara! I can't say enough good things. This was our first child, so neither of us knew what to expect with the labor process. She helped ease my anxiety and answer my questions at our two prenatal appointments with the humor and wisdom of an experienced mother and doula. From the first meeting, talking to her was as easy as talking to an old friend. When I went into labor (very) early in the morning Kiara was ready to come support me at a moment's notice. I ended up laboring for over 24 hours, and although my husband was/is awesome it exhausted him to try to support me for that long. Not Kiara! She was by my side throughout the whole process with a cool washcloth, sip of water, or suggestion to try another position. She took photos throughout the day (with my permission) that I will cherish forever, and gave me the confidence and encouragement to help me achieve the birth I wanted. I'm so happy I had Kiara with me during one of the most important events of my life so far, and highly recommend her as a doula to others.
Kiara was an amazing doula and we could not have asked for better! Leading up to my due date, she was very supportive and helped me get my birth plan together. She has had children of her own and I found this very important in finding a doula. She was able to give me tips and tell me a lot of what to expect as it was my first birth. She checked in with me often as it got closer to my due date and wanted to see how I was feeling and make sure I did not need anything. Eventually, my contractions started and went on many days. Kiara was there every step of the way. We went to the hospital more than once and she was there with us which was amazing. After the first time, we went home but ended up returning a few nights later. I had an extremely long 30 hour, painful labor and she helped me get through this and was fabulous. Not only did she stay the entire time, she helped by getting keep comfortable, calm, helped me breathe, and even helped with muscle relaxation during contractions. Her caring, calm demeanor helped me get through it all! I am so thankful she was there to help me through my labor, she was invaluable, and I would recommend her in a heartbeat!
