Emily was a huge help to us, not only during L&D but in pregnancy and postpartum too. I knew early on that I was going to want pain medication during labor, and I wanted to be sure that our doula would support my choice for an epidural and any other interventions that we elected or accepted. While Emily is now a home birth midwife (she was completing her midwifery schooling when we met) she was completely supportive of all my choices and never made me feel judged or like I was letting birth become over-medicalized. She added a calm, unbiased, experienced viewpoint to the whole process and was a reliable source of support and peace of mind for both me and my husband throughout pregnancy and delivery.
In addition to in-person birth plan meetings, Emily was available throughout pregnancy to answer questions (for example, she was quick to send us a few resources offering concise reasons both for and against circumcision when we were struggling with that decision). My early labor lasted much longer than I anticipated, and Emily was available to us on demand as I labored at home. She offered suggestions for additional comfort measures we hadn't thought of and when I couldn't wait any longer, she helped me make a case at the hospital for admittance even though I was only 3 cm (after walking around the building with us for an hour+ first to try to get things moving). She continued to assist us through labor and delivery, which came relatively quickly after I got an epidural and pitocin, and was a steady source of support and peace of mind. I had some breastfeeding issues after we got home, and Emily offered concrete suggestions and moral support while we worked through them. In all, she was an invaluable asset to us as first time parents, and her patience, insight and calm demeanor - as well as her advocacy with hospital staff on our behalf - helped me have a comfortable and satisfying birth experience. I would not hesitate to hire Emily again.
We had a wonderful experience with Emily as our doula. Our initial hesitation to engaging a doula was that s/he would try to provide "emotional support", as opposed to factual information. We wanted a thoughtful individual, well-versed in current scientific literature and statistical data, that could explain to us the arguments in favor/against each of the many decisions to be made. Emily provided that information concisely and without an agenda, both at meetings before the delivery and during 20 hours of labor. Her unobtrusive but confident support enabled us to approach the delivery with excitement rather than apprehension.
Looking for the right doula is not an easy process, however when we met with Emily we knew she was the doula for us. She is very easy going and knowledgeable, both of which are a must in a doula. She did a wonderful job preparing us for the birth of our daughter. Even though we took childbirth classes it was great to get the one on one with Emily and ask as many questions as we needed to. It was also great to have her to consult as labor was starting. My labor was very quick thus she didn’t even get the chance to come to our house, however she was very helpful at the hospital making sure the doctors knew my birth preferences. Further, my husband said that her presence and guidance the hospital was very helpful to him. It was a pleasure working with her.
Within the first five minutes of meeting Emily I knew she was the doula for me. Her calming presence and extensive knowledge of all things birth related was extremely impressive! Even if Emily was unsure about 1 of the ten million things that I asked her about, she always found me the answer (or multiple answers with literature to back it up). She always made herself extremly available to me during my entire pregnancy and very frequently would check in with me to see how I was doing (both mentally and physically). She really was there every step of the way!
On the day of the actual birth I was terrified! I was uncomfortable at the hospital with nurses and a midwife that I didn't know. When Emily arrived it was as if I had a mother in the room, only better because she able to help me through medical options and help me decide which interventions to choose or avoid. She was an advocate for me through and through. She made me feel very comfortable and I strongly believe I wouldn't have been able to have the birth that I wanted had she not been there. My only regret is that I didn't have her attend my first birth...but you can be sure she will be at my next! :)
From the very first meeting with Emily, my husband and I knew she was the right match in terms of what we were looking for in a doula. She was very professional, knowledgeable, down to earth and made herself completely available to us for any questions or concerns we had in between our scheduled appointments. As first timers, Emily made us feel totally at ease with the process and helped us prepare as much as anyone can for a birth.
During the two prenatal visits she spent extra time reviewing any concerns or fears we may have had about the birth and gave very thorough explanations. I really wanted to try for a natural birth, but was having some doubts about whether I would be able to endure it. Emily was great about talking me through it and helping both me and my husband work out a plan that ultimately put me at ease going into the labor and delivery process.
For the days leading up to and for the actual birth, she was beyond amazing! I ended up needing pitocin but was able to deliver pain med free which I was thrilled about. Both my husband and I kept saying we more than likely would not have had that result if it weren't for Emily's calming presence throughout the whole labor and delivery. She was a great sounding board at the hospital when we had to make decisions about certain interventions and her suggestions to try different positions or movements I feel helped me progress in labor. She was so gracious with the staff at the hospital and worked very well with them. I felt like I had the best support team to carry me through.
My husband and I both feel that choosing to work with Emily was one of the best decisions we made in the pregnancy. We would not hesitate to recommend her and can't thank her enough for the tremendous role she played in the incredible birth of our daugher Anna. Many thanks to you Emily, you have a true gift!
