I have nothing but praise and wonderful things to say about Heather! I reached out to Heather and Destined Doulas when I was switched to a Maternal Fetal Medicine doctor because of my high risk pregnancy. I knew this would make it more challenging for me to have the low intervention birth that I wanted. Heather made my husband and I feel comfortable and confident in my birth from the start. We had a few prenatal meetings with Heather in which we talked about my desires and how we would best achieve them, she also loaned us the hypnobirthing materials and sound tracks as well which saved us a lot of money too! My birth plan took an unexpected change when I was induced at 37 weeks for severe pre eclampsia. She provided my husband and I with tons of information on how the process would probably progress and her knowledge was priceless to us. I had a very lengthy induction and Heather stuck with us the whole time. Pictures of our birth was very important to me as well and she took some beautiful ones of the birth of our daughter. Her support was invaluable to us and we are eternally thankful for the role she played in the birth of our daughter. Not only did I meet a fantastic doula but I gained a friend too.
Heather Delaney was amazing. She was very responsive to texts and was always around for questions and any concerns we had. She was very prompt o all meetings and the delivery even though we were several counties away. Her personality was perfectly matched for us and her beside manner and flexibility was tremendous. She had no troubles changing plans at a moments notice and taking charge of the care when the midwife wasn't in the room. She also was very well paired with the midwife and very knowledgeable in all th terms being used. She took the time to explain everything going on and more importantly why and if there were alternative options. I highly recommend Heather!
Heather is the most wonderful doula! First of all, when we were looking for a doula, Heather stood out by coming to our house to meet us. Meeting in person and going over her approach was incredibly helpful and comforting for us first time parents. I ended up being induced at 42 weeks and Heather helped to mitigate the stress we felt by going so long past our due date. She provided us with a lot of helpful information regarding induction methods and even came to the hospital the night we were admitted to the hospital for the induction (even though the actual induction wouldn't happen until the next day). My labor ended up progressing VERY quickly and Heather got there right away and helped me get through a very intense 4 hour labor. She helped me to stay focused and use the tools I learned through the Hypnobabies program. She was positive throughout my labor and gave me the confidence I needed to power through. Heather was also incredibly helpful once we were back home from the hospital. Heather encapsulated my placenta at our house and the two days she were there to do it were so helpful. We had so many questions and she answered all of them and put us at ease. She also provided me with self-care "goodies" to help with my recovery. If you are looking for an accessible doula with an incredibly positive approach, Heather is the one for you!
I was refered to Heather Delaney of Destined Doulas by my best friend who used her for the birth of her first child. My friend couldn't (and still hasn't) stopped praising Heather for all she did during her pregnancy and delivery, and I haven't either! With her expertise, Heather provides consistent parental preparation for new parents. After our first meeting with her, my husband and I were immediately impressed and comforted by the tools she gave us. Heather helped us develop a birth plan that was right for us, even though we weren't able to use it come "go time." My LO ended up being delivered via an emergency c-section. Regardless of the fact that Heather was not able to fulfil her role as doula during my labor and delivery because I was unconscious in the emergency room, she went above and beyond the typical "doula-ing" role by helping guide my husband through the most scary experience of his life and them both hunting down pathology so my placenta could be encapsulated within a timely manner. She even came by a month later and brought us all chinese food! She's a hero in my book and will definitely be there for the birth of our second child.
Heather was the Doula for the birth of our first son. We had wanted to work with a Doula because we were both very uncertain about how stressful the experience would be, and we didn't want to put too much pressure on my husband to be my main source of support during labor as we knew that he would also be very emotional.
We met with Heather three times before the labor in addition to attending a comfort measures class that her practice holds. Because of these meetings, we really felt prepared and ready for the labor experience, from an emotional as well as practical perspective. The comfort measures class taught both my husband and I a lot of really awesome techniques for mentally persisting through contractions, and it was a really enjoyable way to spend a Friday night in the company of a number of really engaged couples. I was also very impressed with the other Doulas at Heather's practice. When Heather came to our home, we covered a number of topics to help us feel more comfortable about going into this experience. She helped us work through a lot of decisions so that we had a clear, easy-to-read birth plan. Because we worked out a birth plan before our labor, we felt like we wouldn't be put in the position of having to make rushed decisions at the hospital because we had already considered our options. Even if we would have to change our birth plan, we felt going to the hospital that we were very informed.
Our labor ended up being quite fast, and Heather helped us talk through when we wanted to go to the hospital. Heather was extraordinary at helping me direct my energy to push efficiently and remain centered as possible. One of the things that I hadn't expected was the role of the Doula after the birth. She was great at keeping us calm while the doctors were giving a bath to our son and I was being stitched up, And I hadn't even realize that she was taking lots of great photos that we enjoyed looking at later.
I highly recommend Heather. Whenever I talk about the birth I say, "...and I don't know how I would have done it without Heather." I have already recommended her doula services to a good friend, who also decided to go with Destined Doulas.
From the first meeting Heather was friendly and supportive, and was able to explain so many things about pregnancy, birth, and post-partum life that I learned more from her than the pile I books I read during pregnancy and the birthing class we took. I loved how organized she is, and still have the Destined Doulas folder and post-partum book she made within arm's reach. She helped with the birth plan, and made a great visual birth plan. She did placenta encapsulation and was supportive when she came to my home to do that and during the post-partum visit.
I borrowed books from the Lending Library and used the TENs unit. I loved the hypnobirthing tracks and sometimes still listen to them! She knows all about baby-wearing and breastfeeding, and was able to help us decide which babycarriers to get.
I wanted a natural birth -- without Heather there I would probably have gotten drugs within minutes of arriving at the hospital! She helped me with each contraction and the back labor. Uggh, the back labor. Heather is amazing. She helped my husband remain calm and help me! I didn't even know all that Heather was doing to support my husband until he told me afterwards. Heather knew exactly what I needed when I didn't, and encouraged me to try comfort measures that I was a bit iffy about -- but they worked! She can work wonder with a rebozo! I had the birth that I wanted, and Heather was a major part of that happening. She also took photos, and I don't even know when she did that because I didn't even notice, but so happy that she did.
I have so many good things to say about Heather! She will be my first phone call if I get pregnant again.
My Husband and I were so happy to have found Heather from Destined Doula for our second birth. We hired a different doula for our first and it wasn’t the experience I wanted and I wasn’t able to have the medicine free birth that I wanted. With Heather I never felt pressured before or during my birth. She was very supportive through the whole process and has great pain relief tools/methods. I was able to get the birth that I wanted-such an incredible, positive experience. Heather is very knowledgeable and passionate about what she does and it shows. There is no doubt that if we are blessed with another child in the future we will be working with Heather again. Also the healing spray she gave during postpartum was AMAZING and made the healing process bearable. All new mamas need it (and Heather)!
Having Heather as my Doula was a wonderful experience. I had a very long and difficult labor with outcomes that were not what I expected. She worked with me to try to keep my labor the one that I wanted even as circumstances changed. I felt guided and supported through every step and decisions made in the process of my labor. In the end I felt very satisfied that everything was tried to facilitate my labor the way I wanted it. I know I would not have been happy or as well informed of the decisions that were made had Heather not been there to explain and support me throughout the entire process. I would recommend to anyone to use Heather as a Doula she will be there when you need her the most.
I spoke with several doulas before I hired Heather. I had a good feeling about Heather after speaking with her on the phone. She sealed the deal by taking the time to meet me in person in my home. I was looking for a doula who was knowledgeable and experienced, had children of her own, had a positive and warm presence, and would be attentive to my needs. Heather was all of these things. I was immediately impressed with her knowledge of childbirth techniques, philosophies, as well as medical procedures. I also appreciated the time she took with both my husband and I in the prenatal visit to discuss our birth preferences and get to know us and our individual visions for the experience. She treated each of us as equal participants and facilitated the discussion in a way in which I got to learn things about my husband's preferences that I might not have known otherwise.
I was particularly interested in a water birth (which she herself had experienced) and preparing for labor using the Hypnobabies program. In addition, I was a high risk birth given my previous experience with preeclampsia and c-section. Her knowledge and experience with both (personally and as a doula) gave me confidence going into the birth which is half the battle. In addition, she was able to provide me with the Hypnobabies homestudy program as a part of the package.
Every birth is different. My labor progressed slowly all day and then very quickly in the middle of the night. As a result we had to rush to the hospital and were not able to have Heather join us at home to manage through labor. Once in the hospital, Heather was very supportive and definitely changed the vibe to a more relaxed one (even more so than the midwife!). In the future I would recommend communicating by phone instead of text during early labor to ensure communication is clear.
Overall Heather was wonderful and I have already recommended her to other expecting moms.
For the birth of our first born baby, my husband and I wanted a successful and fulfilling birth story. We also wanted a drug-free birth. It was our first baby and we wanted to be as prepared as possible, so we decided to hire a doula. We found Destined Doulas and Heather on DoulaMatch, and set up an interview. Heather had exactly what we wanted. We felt confident with her experience and liked that she took many continuing education classes. Just as importantly, we also both felt a good energy from her and felt we would make a good team together. Well, we had a beautiful baby boy and a drug-free birth just as we had hoped for, and I could not have done it without Heather and my husband. I know for a fact that without the both of them cheering me on and encouraging me, I would have given in at my weak moments and asked for drugs. Heather was a huge emotional support for me, during labor and also post-partum. When I found myself experiencing some baby blues, I leaned on her for her advice and guidance. She made me feel quite normal and really got me through a challenging time. We are very grateful to have met Heather and have her as our birth doula. -Lindsey K.
After a traumatic first labor experience that ended in a c-section, I knew I wanted a more natural birth experience for baby #2 so I set out to hire a doula. Destined Doulas was recommended to me by more than one friend. I reached out to Heather and received a response same day. From the first meeting we felt that she was knowledgeable and supportive of the VBAC I wanted. I was in and out of the hospital for preterm labor and Heather responded to our messages with updates day or night. She checked in on me often and asked a lot of questions about the gameplan after each appointment. When my water broke at 34 weeks, I was terrified of delivering prematurely. My dream birth seemed to be out the window, but Heather made sure I had everything I wanted and more! Her calm demeanor helped me deliver without an epidural and I achieved the VBAC I desired. She listened to all of my wishes in the initial meeting and made my dream a reality by helping me communicate with hospital staff during my labor. She also took beautiful photos of my delivery that I will cherish forever. If you are looking for a doula who will listen to your needs and support your desires then Heather is your doula! I HIGHLY recommend her!
After interviewing several doulas, I felt an immediate connection to Heather and knew she was the right person for us. She was always very professional and organized, but it was clear from the start that she became a doula for purely heartfelt reasons. She is down to earth, personable, understanding, and compassionate. She was available by phone, text, and email, and so supportive every step of the way. I faced some challenges toward the end of my pregnancy and had to make some difficult decisions regarding what medical advice to follow and whether to agree to being induced or not. Heather remained unbiased and gave us resources for how to have a productive dialogue with our health care providers in order for us to make informed decisions. During my labor and delivery Heather was a calm and supportive presence and reminded me to focus on my breathing and relax into intense sensation rather than fighting it. I ended up having just 3 hours of intense contractions, pushed for 6 minutes, and our beautiful daughter was born! She was also very attentive for our post partum visits and I am very grateful to Heather for all of her support. I would absolutely recommend her and would use her again if we have another baby down the road.
Heather was our doula for the birth of our first daughter, who arrived 7/14/15. I was nervous about having my first child and wanted to try my best to have a natural birth. Heather was by far the best decision I made to help me through my pregnancy. Immediatley after meeting I felt such a feeling a relief, I was much more confidant in my pregnancy and upcoming birth as a whole, Heather was so upbeat, positive, friendly, helpful, and encouraging. She listened to all of my fears, concerns, hopes, and plans and gave my husband and I such wonderful feedback and support. Throughout my pregnancy I bugged the heck out of Heather with qurstions and mini freak out sessions but she was nothing but supportive and EXTREMELY helpful! Heather was always extremely quick with her response and I always felt she was easily accesible, which was comforting for my husband and I. Heather's knowledge about all things pregnancy and labor related was amazing, she gave me so many tips and tricks that helped me along the way. My labor was extremely long and Heather stayed by my side through it all, helping my husband and I every step of the way. Heather made sure my wishes were followed, which was so important because my husband and I were overwhelmed and not focused on every little thought and detail- but Heather was! Heather also came over to check on us the first week we came home from the hospital and it was so nice to see her and have the chance to ask her the many more questions that arose after bringing our baby home! I attribute much of positive pregnancy and delivery to Heather, as does my husband, and I would highly, highly reccomend her to anyone having a baby in the future, you will NOT regret it!
I first found Heather and Destended Doulas in my search for a local Doula to encapsulate by Placents. After reading over their website I became more and more interested in their Doula services. Being a first time Mom I had no idea what I was getting myself into! My husbands not the most hands on individual so I had a feeling Labor might not be his cup of tea. I met Heather for our first consultation and absoluy fell in love with her! We met with her for the provided meetings in the Doula package as well as had her come for a Baby 101 class she offered as well. I ended up having to be induced and our plan with Heather was as soon as I started to feel uncomfortable she would head to the hospital. I made it about 2 hours in when we made the call and Heather was with us in no time. She brought all her coping techinques, and we went another 2 hours until I opted for the epidura. Once that was administered we all got some needed downtime before the pushing began. Between my nurses and Heather I don't know what I have done for the next 4 hours! They were my cheerleaders, never leting me give up we used differnt pushing technique, even having an epidural I was able to use the squat bar to push. When it was all said and done I had a healthy baby Girl, a relaxed husband and I didn't kill my mother who was also in the room! My husband and I both agreed at the end of the night that Heather was worth every penny and her weight in Gold. Once I delivered by placenta Heather packaged it up and took it with her to process. She gives you a broth, pills, and I have a tincure made as well. Everything is labeled and packaged to perfection. We met for our postpartum visit and I cryed when she had to leave I enjoyed this journey I got to share with her and truly appreciated all her advice and caring support. She' AMAZING!!
My wife and I had a doula for our first birth and knew we wanted a doula for our second birth as well. From our first meeting with Heather, we could tell she had a fantastic energy and passion about the work she does. She and her partners at Destined Doulas have come up with a huge improvement on the Birth Plan/Preferences that makes it much more palatable to hospital staff and more likely that nurses will actually read it.
We also attended a Comfort Measures in Labor workshop that Destined Doulas offered at Special Beginnings Birth and Women's Center just outside of Annapolis. They discussed and demonstrated some coping and comfort measures such as massage, counter pressure, rebozo technique, and we even did some visualization exercises. This was very helpful to us as a couple and made us feel like we had several tools to choose from during labor. Their resources like the lending library are a unique advantage to any parent and we found the selection and demonstration of baby wearing carriers to be a highlight as well. We also chose to have the placenta encapsulated and Heather took care of everything in a timely manner, with clear instruction.
Working with Destined Doulas was easygoing and we would highly recommend Destined Doulas to anyone looking for a supported, positive birth experience.
I contacted doula when i was TTC and was preganant a short time later with my second child. After having a medicated birth i knew i wanted to have a natural birth this time and it couldn't have gone any better. Heather was amazing. she provided so much education about my birth options and placenta encapsulation. Destined doulas also provides educational classes which are free. The comfort measures class was very helpful. She helped me write a birth plan and made an awesome diagram chart instead of a drawn out birth plan to let nurses know what i did and didn't want. When i was having contractions i called her and she came to my house right away. Even though my contractions seemed to come to a hault she still tried to humor me and help progress labor. when things progressed she meet me at the hospital and was there rocking back and forth with me massaging my back and feeding me ice which was amazing. The other amazing thing she did was take pictures. It was amazing to have pictures of my little girl's first moments of life. After i was home she came to my house and showed me some babywearing and nursing tips and gave me my placenta pills. Let me just say, if you are hesitant about encapsulating your placenta because it makes you cringe, they really help. I had so much more energy even though i was running on no sleep and it helped alot with my emotional ups and downs after giving birth. I can't wait to use Heather for my next birth. She is amazing!!
My husband and I could not have been happier with our experience with Heather. This was our second child and we were looking for support with a natural, unmedicated VBAC hospital birth. From our first meeting, we were impressed with her professional manner and extensive knowledge. She came across as friendly and warm but also carried a take-charge manner which was exactly what we were looking for in a doula. She offered extensive pre-birth support, including explanations of all things birth and baby (pain management options, birth plan help, baby wearing, etc.) as well as post-partum support (visit to check in and make sure all is well with baby, mom AND dad). Her support was invaluable and we were able to achieve our birthing goals – a medication-free VBAC. Not only did she provide a serene birthing environment (music, electric candles, communication with hospital staff, peaceful and confident attitude) but she also helped push the labor along with position suggestions and positive feedback and encouragement. My husband also found her to be invaluable – she made sure that he was included in the birthing process (offering suggestions to be a great support person). She was also extremely dedicated – she traveled through a snow storm to get to the hospital for the birth and stayed to the bitter end (12-plus hours into the wee hours of the morning)! I could not recommend her more – I feel she was a crucial part of such a wonderful birth.
Heather is an AWESOME doula. I live in San Diego, but gave birth to my second daughter in Maryland because that's where I'm from originally and my husband was deployed. I couldn't have dreamed up a better birth experience. Heather was extremely supportive Leading up to and during the birth process. I was induced with my first daughter and ended up having an epidural. I had really wanted to experience an all natural birth. I was determined to do it with my second and was worried about not having my husband there to support me. I couldn't have asked for a better partner than Heather. She was in my face when necessary and still gave me space when I needed it. She was kind, patient, and supportive every step of the way. She is super easy going and so intuitive, often anticipating my needs before I even voiced them. Now I just wish I could have Heather with me for all my births! Maybe I'll get lucky and win the lottery... then I can just fly her out to wherever the military take us for the next 14 years.... ;-)
I will admit that when we met Heather during the interview, I was a little skeptical. Here was this young, Katherine Heigel-esque (read attractive) woman in front of us. How much could this young'un know? It turns out a whole lot. Not only was she very knowledgeable about her field and had an impressive certification list, but she had a very warm personable way about her. Heather really had her act together. Within 15 minutes of our interview, we knew that we wanted Heather to be our Doula.
Our pre birth meetings were very informative and had everything from props to printouts. Again, I have to praise Heather's bedside manner; even though she was a professional that we were paying for a service, our meetings felt more like a visit from an old friend who just had a baby and was sharing her personal experience with us. Heather's ability to make you feel at ease went a long way with helping us stay at ease.
When the big day came and my wife started having complications, Heather could not get to the hospital fast enough for me. I remember nearly running over a couple of nurses to hug her when she walked in the door. What can I say, I was stressed and nervous. :) Heather quickly got my wife in me into our rhythm having us do the coping exercises she taught us. The next morning, we welcomed our daughter into the world.
I cannot begin to say how grateful we are that we had Heather there to help us with the birthing process. I would recommend her and Destined Doulas to anybody who reads this.
We hired Heather to be our doula for the birth of our third child (our first doula-assisted birth). As the time for the birth drew near I decided that I wanted to have pain relief. My first two labors were at least 8 hours long (active stage). After an hour and a half of labor I was at the point where it was time to go to the hospital. Heather met us there and I told her that I wanted to have an epidural. She was wonderful and understanding. However, less than an hour after we arrived, our baby was born. There was no time to have any kind of pain relief. The nurses and my midwife attributed the swiftness of the birth (at least in part) to my ability to relax which was all because of Heather. While I was pushing I wanted to get in a different position and Heather was extremely helpful in making sure I was able to be in the best position possible. After the birth, Heather stayed with me while my husband went to get us some food and drink and until we got settled in our room.
Even though I had planned on pain relief I had no idea that the birth would happen so quickly - too quick for any pain relief. Heather was extremely important in getting me through what was a rather traumatic birth because it happened so fast. She was a great advocate for me.
Heather and the other two doulas in her practice are constantly learning new methods, theories, etc. relating to the world of giving birth. She is already very familiar with many techniques that I was interested in trying had the birth not been so quick. I have been and will recommend Heather for all kinds of births.
We hired Heather to be our doula during the birth of our first child after several interactions. From the initial meeting, I knew that Heather would be a great partner to have on our birthing team and we had to book her! She had so many of the qualities we were looking for: knowledgable, sensitive, understanding, a great listener, motivational, calm, reassuring, and most of all - a great sense of humor. I was very nervous about our first birth, but after every meeting with Heather I felt more and more confident that i would have a positive natural birth experience.
When I wasn't sure if I was in labor, Heather was the first person my husband called. She not only helped reassure me, but also my husband. At the hospital she came prepared with supplies like a bluetooth speaker, a great birth plan chart for the hospital door, soothing LED candles, a birthing ball, honey sticks and many other necessary items. Throughout my labor, Heather was such an amazing coach. I experienced a challenging labor, but she was there to help me and my husband stay motivated, help us make any necessary decisions, and keep us positive and laughing. I felt reassured with Heather there to help my husband as well as me. She helped to make sure he was resting, staying hydrated, and eating. He also enjoyed having someone to talk to when I was too out of it to talk. My parents were in the waiting room throughout the whole labor and Heather would run out and update them on my progress. She also was able to go out and show them pictures of their newest grandaughter minutes after she was born. It meant so much to me that she went that extra effort for us!
From the start my husband and I felt so much more knowledgable, confident and reassured knowing that we had Heather on our birth team. She was truly amazing to work with and we were so happy to have her at the birth of our first child!
I knew from the beginning that having a doula was very important to me in my journey of pregnancy, birth and postpartum. My husband and I met Heather and I walked away from that encounter with complete certainty that she would be our doula- my husband agreed as well. From the first meeting she was warm, down to earth, knowledgable and comforting to talk with. Our entire experience with Heather was nothing short of excellent. She was always available by email/phone/text, incredibly organized and very knowledgable about prenancy, labor, birth and postpartum care. We are completely certain that we would not have acheived all the goals we had made if it were not for the support from Heather. I was able to experience the birth that I had set out to acheieve and Heather was holding my hand the entire way. My husband felt a tremendous amount of support and comfort with her being with us and she helped him find ways to support me throughout the entire labor and birth. She had a presence that let us both feel safe and secure while at the same time letting my husband and I work together in a way that has brought us closer than ever. I've even reached out to her after having our daugheter for additional support and she has always been available.
Overall, I have nothing negative to say about our experience with Heather and fully recommend her to anyone who is looking for a supportive, knowledgable, caring, creative and dependable partner in their journey into motherhood. 5 out of 5 stars!
Giving birth is obviously a very intimate experience, but Heather managed to bridge the divide between being an informed professional while simultaneously being warm and supportive through my entire birth experience. She was excellent at helping me pinpoint my fears and move past them so that I could relax and focus on my goal of a natural, un-medicated birth. She anticipated my needs in ways that even I could not have predicted and helped to make bringing my son into this world a truly amazing and empowering experience.
This was such a blessing! Heather offered a great deal of pre-labor support, from answering questions and offering information on a range of techniques and ideas about birth, to the consultation when she sent out forms to both myself AND MY HUSBAND about our expectations and needs for this upcoming event (I must say, reading what my husband wrote to her about his expectations was so touching...I loved that she did that and that he let me read it!) to the actualy 40 hours of labor that was. Heather was able to be of great service to us as this was our first time. It was such a relief to have someone supporting you and your needs even when you are being unreasonable, and your husband is frustrated and you may not know how to communicate with the staff at the hospital to get your point across. I love the approach she took, supporting my desires, and also being very in tune with the quick changes of heart that I experienced. I would not say the labor process is fun, but she did make it EVER so much more bearable! Also whe was able to help me with getting the placenta encapsulated, which was a great offering. That got me through some really tough spots postpartum!
She has been checking in here and there and still offers so much insight and support. This has greatly changed my life and she has been such an integral part of the event, I can't help but feel like she is family. I am so grateful for her. I would have her as my doula even if I had 10 kids, it takes the stress down significantly and smooths the whole process out. It allowed family to come in at their convenience and help out and not be part of the stress of labor and delivery, it helped my husband feel like more a helper than someone who has to try to please me and get things done that I couldnt do (and helped him not feel inadequate when he couldnt do or accomplish something!) and really most of all helped me, to have someone who was there with gentle support through the entire process.
