Jo has been a huge help to me in so many different ways as a first time mom. I had a ton of breastfeeding and bottlefeeding issues and she helped me sort through them and referred me to various other professionals as well. She’s been a great resource for general baby care and for general emotional support. I highly recommend her as a postpartum doula and for lactation support!
Jo was my doula for baby #6. This was our first time having a doula and we didn’t know what to expect. We happened upon Jo a few weeks before giving birth. Jo is very personable and it was easy to form a trusting relationship with her in a short period of time. I started having contractions off and on a few days before I gave birth. She did a nice job of keeping in contact with me to see how I was doing. My last pregnancy was twins and a c-section, so I was trying for VBAC. She was very attentive to my needs and was an immense help in me having an un-medicated labor. Jo was wonderful with helping me stay focused and helped me to keep breathing properly and stay relaxed. She had suggestions of different positions to try or things we could do to alleviate pain, but was not pushy about anything. She will be as hands on as you want her to be and she is very respectful if you want some privacy. Jo is very kind hearted, sweet, and very knowledgeable about childbirth. I would highly recommend Jo for anyone looking for a personal caring doula for their birthing experience.
As I imagine it is for most first time moms, breastfeeding was harder than I ever thought it would be. I was about to give up. I had a cracked nipple on one side, a flat nipple that my baby couldn't always find on the other side. My daughter wasn't gaining weight and the pediatrician was already talking about supplementing with formula. I contacted Jo and she came over THAT DAY! D-Day, the day I almost folded. She lived an hour away from me, but she showed up just a few hours after I called. I had never met Jo before, but after just a short time with her in my living room, I felt like I'd known her for years. We headed up to my bedroom where I felt the most comfortable. Let's face it, I was feeling tired, defeated, and I just wanted to lay in my own bed with my newborn. I was so calm in Jo's presence that I spent the next hour or so completely topless as she sat next to me and carefully coached me in the most sensitive, encouraging way possible. Knowing that she had already nursed 4 of her own children also gave me hope that I could do this too! I had immediate confidence in Jo's advice. She empowered me to find my way through breastfeeding. One of her best pieces of advice was when she gave me "permission" to lay in bed for the next few days skin-to-skin and not worry about anything else but feeding my baby. She knew that my absolute goal and desire was to continue with breastfeeding. I loved using the "but my LC said card" as much as I wanted that week! A year later, my daughter and I are still breastfeeding. It is the most precious relationship of my time on this earth. I am so grateful for Jo's presence, knowledge, and support like I was a close friend or family even though we barely knew each other. I still enjoy touching base with her and will definitely be using her services with baby #2. Thank you, Jo!!
