My husband and I cannot thank Johanna enough for how wonderful she was during our first pregnancy and birth. I had a tremendous fear of childbirth and having Johanna by our side gave me the support I needed. Right after our son was born, my husband looked at me and said, "I am so happy Johanna was with us, I cannot imagine what it would have been like without her help." I highly recommend everyone having a doula to help through the childbirth experience, even if it's not their first birth.
Johanna was truly exceptional. The support, encouragement, and advice she gave pre and postpartum are worth four times what she charges. In labor, she knew exactly where to apply counter pressure just by watching me. Labor did not go according to plan, but my husband and I felt informed and empowered throughout (even when things got a little scary). Postpartum, Johanna provided guidance and support that helped us sleep better, nurse better, and overall feel better during what can be a challenging time of adjustment. We will truly miss her presence in our lives and recommend her to all expectant families.
After a medical event meant my original doula was unable to assist with the birth of my second child, I scrambled to find an available doula. Enter Johanna! Johanna is kind, gentle, and upon meeting her, an immediate friend and confidante. She is extremely responsive to emails and other communication, and has tons of resources at her disposal to help parents work through their goals and expectations for birth. Johanna helped me work through lingering feelings I had about my first birth, acknowledging and validating my concerns and helping develop a plan to have a more desirable outcome.
My second birth ended up extremely fast and intense with some stressful moments. Johanna was a calm in the storm. She kept me grounded and focused and was 100% focused on me during the stressful times. She remembered things we had talked about during our initial consultations and put them to work to keep me comfortable and calm. She stayed with me after delivery, made sure we were taken care of, and helped get us off on the right foot with breastfeeding and post partum care. Her role in my birth experience can not be overstated.
Perhaps the best part of Johanna's services was the one week follow up visit. I thought, after having such a fast and painless delivery, that I wouldn't need the visit. As it turned out, her visit helped me process a lot of the feelings and residual emotions I didn't know I had. So much happened so quickly, so it was so nice to talk it out with someone who had been there, hear her perspective, and work through some final thoughts. Working with Johanna was a truly wonderful experience from start to finish. I'm so thankful I had her in my corner!
I'm so grateful to have had Johanna's help with our daughter's birth.
During labor, Johanna made sure that our healthcare providers were aware of key information and that we understood our options well. At a time when a misunderstanding can cause notable distress, she helped everyone work together smoothly. Our delivery was different than we expected and Johanna helped us make decisions in the moment that matched our hopes for our medical care.
Beyond that, she helped prepare us to care for our daughter. She taught us about breastfeeding technique and was there in those moments after birth to help us remember. She helped teach us about newborn care, recommended helpful books, and let us borrow some others. The advice and resources Johanna provided made it a much better experience, both for us and our daughter.
Johanna was supportive, calm, and knowledgeable throughout the process. Her questions helped us prepare for birth and she provided excellent support post-partum, too. We felt incredibly supported. Johanna is a great listener. She got to know us and was able to help us align our birth experience and options with our values. She's wonderful!
I recommend working with Johanna to anyone overwhelmed or confused by the birth process.
Hiring Johanna Wright as our sibling doula was the wisest decision my husband and I could have made to ensure our preschooler was well taken care of during the birth of our second child. It was actually imperative we prepared to have Johanna stay because at 38 weeks pregnant I developed a serious medical condition and unexpectedly had to be induced. While we rushed to the hospital, we called Johanna. She was able to pick up our daughter from school and care for her until the next morning. Confident that our daughter was well cared for by Johanna, we were able to focus on the birth of our new baby. Since our family lives across the country, without Johanna’s support I don't know what we would have done. I can't recommend Johanna enough to any family looking for a sibling Doula, or birth doula for that matter. Her kind, confident and professional manner put us immediately at ease and we knew we could trust her. If you go with Johanna, you and your family will be in good hands.
We choose Johanna based on her calming nature. Both my husband & I were prepared and on what to expect in birthing but not when it came to the emotional & the unexpected. We were looking for a personality that would give us the "calm in the storm". Despite being well versed we had some unexpected things, like prodromal labor that lead to three evenings laboring. Johanna was reassuring, supportive & helpful navigating the difficulties of prodromal labor. When I went into actual labor my baby was stuck on my public bone, which ended up being intense. My contractions were one minute long & one minute apart for sixteen hours. Having that intense of a labor is exhausting, anxiety provoking, & can lead to other complications if not managed right. Johanna was amazing, she came to the house calmed my husband, gave him a break to go eat/relax. He says without Johanna he would have never left my side. He tells all of our friend's husbands to get a doula for the husband. The wife will have the medical staff, no one is there for the husband. And to top it all off I wanted him to field information before it came to me, to keep me calm. He really needed the emotional support Johanna provided. I really benefited from having the extra attention & guidance. She was awesome at listening to what I wanted & honoring that. We didn't need much of the pre and post meetings because our midwifery was so thorough with classes. I would recommend them if you are with a traditional ob. We will definitely be using Johanna again when we are ready for baby #2. And she gave awesome resources during postpartum period to aid with breastfeeding. The people she recommended were amazing, where the people we found on our own were not very good. She definitely knows her stuff!
As I approach the birth of my second baby boy (3 weeks away!), I wish that Johanna was still in the New England area. Johanna has a calming presence, a willingness to listen and the ability to provide assistance with her vast experience.
We had just moved to New Hampshire and did not have much support in the area. When we contacted Johanna we just clicked. While regretably we did not request her delivery services she visited our home on a weekly basis to offer much needed support. Johanna‘s expertise was relied on heavily as a new mom to a very collic ridden baby, whom had an allergy to milk protein, terrible reflus and an awful sleeper. Johanna always offered advice, experience and reseaourcrs for whatever we threw her way.
We are grateful to have met, worked with and had learnings from Johanna. I highly recommend Johanna and her services to any expecting mom, new mom, and/or experienced mom.
We hired Johanna Wright for postpartum support after the birth of our first child. I had serious complications during the delivery and birth that left me hospitalized longer than expected and required subsequent surgeries in the weeks after the birth. My husband and I felt fairly well prepared to take care of our baby, but we were blind-sided by my health problems. I couldn’t assist overnight care for our baby for several weeks, and we quickly realized that it wasn’t tenable for my husband to do so alone and also work during the day. Our birth doula recommended that we contact Johanna, who was able to take care for our baby 5 to 6 nights a week for almost two months. She was a lifesaver. Nanny services that we called explained they only worked with babies more than six-weeks old, and most other doulas did occasional overnights, but not for extended periods of time. Johanna’s care allowed my husband and I to rest and recover so that our whole family could go into my next surgery as healthy as possible. It also allowed us to keep our baby at home for six months as we had originally planned—had my husband been forced to take his FMLA concurrently with mine, we would have needed to enroll our baby in daycare before we were comfortable doing so. And perhaps most importantly, Johanna was a calm, compassionate, and skilled caretaker who took excellent care of our “spirited” newborn. I never had any qualms about leaving the baby with her and stuffing a pillow over my head to get some much needed sleep. She provided guidance about a variety of issues related to the baby’s care and even tolerated our cats, who slept with her on the couch. She is also quietly very funny. I enthusiastically and unreservedly recommend Johanna for postpartum doula care, and I have no doubt that she would be an amazing birth doula as well.
Choosing Johanna as my doula was one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life. It was my first delivery, so I had no idea what to expect, but she was there guiding me every step of the way. Her years of experience really showed as she knew exactly which positions to put me in to alleviate my pain and to ensure the baby was in the correct position. I had an especially diffcult time pushing (ended up being close to 4 hours long), and her calming and reassuring presence is what got me through it. I had a natural birth plan, and was only able to accomplish that with her help. Also, there's no doubt in my mind that I would have needed a C-section if not for her.
Johanna is the reason I can look back on my births and remember them with fondness as opposed to times of failure.
In 2011 I gave birth to my first son naturally. It was an intesnse and fast labor, because of this she met me at the hospital. I was begging for an epidural when she arrived. She helped me remember my birth plan and her calm spirit helped me to settle down, let go of my fears, and let my body do what it was made to do. If she was not there I would not have been able to make it through the pain. I am so grateful she was there and I was able to deliver naturally.
In 2013 I gave birth to my second son, via c-section. I learned at 36 weeks he was a double footling breech. Johanna was an immense help and resource in that stressful time of trying to get him to flip. Unfortunately he did not, and came only a few days later. I went into labor naturally and so while I was at the hospital, dealing with painful contractions, it was really difficult to endure them because I knew I wasn't going to get a natural birth. Once Johanna came, she once again helped me refocus and endure the pain before the c-section. After the c-section she let me know how brave, courageous, and loving it is to endure a c-section for your child. At first, I didn't know why she was telling me this, but as the days went by I was tempted to feel guilty or like a failure for having to have a c-section. But her words resounded in my mind, and so those feelings never lasted. Now when I look back on that birth, I remember Johanna and what a blessing it was to have her help me through the difficult moments before the c-section and how she helped me not view that birth as a failure, but as a loving sacrifice for my son.
I highly recommend her as a doula!
My husband and I loved Johanna and were very pleased that she was part of my delivery team.
We met with her twice before baby was born, and she was there to help guide us through the decisions we knew we wanted to make, and help us consider every other option we might not have considered. Although I wanted a natural birth, I am a realist, and even though I am a planner (I had a 2-page typed birth plan), after talking to Johanna, it boiled down to me wanting to make informed decisions to feel in control of my labor, simple. Johanna was a key player in making this happen.
Johanna was a very calming presence for both me and my husband. I was induced 11 days before my due date, and my natural, unmedicated birth went out the window. Despite this, I am still very happy with my birth and labor story, and every choice I made felt like the right one—I believe that it was because of Johanna's help and encouragement that I did not end up getting a C-Section, although I know if that had happened, Johanna would have been the calming presence that we needed to get through it.
She made sure my husband had guidance on where to be to help me, and he was able to feel fully present for me and our daughter. She also made sure he ate, which I'm sure he would have forgotten to do!
Labor was difficult and traumatic, but I am still able to reflect on it happily. My favorite part was speaking with Johanna after the dust had settled. I was able to review all of my choices, and was able to look back at them and see why we made them. It made me so happy and so proud that I was able to bring my daughter into this world and be filled with love for her, for my husband, and for our delivery team.
I highly recommend Johanna and we would definitely have asked her to be present at our next birth if she'd stayed in town. I am so happy we were able to experience our first with her.
Johanna was the perfect doula. I ended up needing to be induced despite my desire to have a natural childbirth, and she completely supported me. Despite the induction, I had a beautiful birth with no need for pain management. Johanna was psychologically invaluable to both me and my husband. I knew I would give birth in a hospital and Johanna worked well with all of the nurses and the doctor who delivered my son. She is a calm, knowledgable and reasurring presence, and I really can't reccomend her enough!
I recently had a baby with the help and assistance of Johanna as my doula. I cannot give enough high praise for her part in my birthing experience. I decided to contact Johanna from a list of recommendations I received from the North Shore Birth Center. She was very gracious and accommodating. After emailing back and forth about my first birth experience and what I was wanting with this one, we decided to meet and officially hire her as our doula. She is very knowledgeable with everything pregnancy, birth, and baby related. She was happy to provide any advice or information I could want and was also supportive and encouraging. She made herself available for any questions or concerns I had and also made a point to contact me as we were nearing our due date. I called her when I was in labor and she was able to meet us at the birth center shortly after our arrival. She mentioned getting some food to my husband (this was around 5:30 PM so none of us had eaten dinner yet) and offered to get us some subs, but made sure it would be okay for her to leave first. This was greatly appreciated. She was amazing with alleviating my pain and coaching me through my contractions. She instinctively and skillfully knew what to do to help me birth. She used a calm voice to tell me to soften my forehead and relax into the pain and let my body do what it needed to in order to get the baby out. She also told me how to moan which totally helped! She said to relax my jaw and make low sounds, and this was incredibly effective. She also knew where to apply pressure during my contractions starting with my foot, hand, hips, and finally my tail bone as my contractions progressed. It was like she could read my body and where I needed pressure at the exact time I needed it. She also told me to stop making noises once I transitioned to pushing which caused me to push silently and efficiently. She helped me be successful and is an excellent doula. I highly recommend her.
We loved Johanna.
Prior to labor, she came came to our house at least twice to talk to us about our birth vision, breastfeeding, options, and contingency plans. She was very informative and gave us a lot of information.
During labor, she was a rock star. She was absolutely loving towards both of us (especially Amy). Her rapport with the OB was great. She gave us pertinent information so we could make informed decisions. Whatever decision we made, she supported us whole heartedly.
After labor, she came to the house (again) to check and see how Amy was nursing or if we needed any other help.
We were incredibly sad that Johanna was leaving town. We would definitely would have used Johanna again and would recommend her to anyone who is looking for a nurturing and professional doula.
Johanna was the family, friend, sister and Doula that I needed when I had none. Planning my 4th birth to be a homebirth, we were shocked to find out that I would be needing a planned emergency C-sec due to complications. Johannas presence and complete support during that time was invaluable! My husband and I would not have wanted to go through our birth experience without her! We will always be thankful for her calm and loving spirit at a time when we needed that the most and so greatful for her support and wisdom at such a unexpected but Blessed time in our lives! ~ Kristin
Johanna has been our doula for two separate births, in 2011 and 2012. I cannot speak highly enough of our experiences with her as our doula. She is a calming force in the midst of a sometimes uncertain and high-tense environment of a birth. My favorite part about having Johanna with us is that she provides so much information before, during and after childbirth, which really relieves much anxiety. We desired the most natural birth possible in a hospital setting. Johanna was able to tell me what the doctors were doing, and gave me to option to say yes or no to various medicine/procedures that I never even would have known the doctors were doing had she not clued us in. And throughout labor, she was always able to tell us what stage we were at in labor and what was coming next. She is so sweet and helpful, and I absolutely recommend her!
My husband and I had Johanna as our birth doula for our two sons born in September 2011 and July 2013 and I cannot imagine the births without her there. She was available for questions and support throughout the pregnancy, during labor, and postpartum. I also know I could go to her with any "baby" related question at anytime, whether it be for breastfeeding help, postpartum issues, etc . She is always wiling to help and support you.
For our 2011 birth, labor was quick and intense. Being my first time through, I was panicky and wanted an epidural. Without Johanna's encouragement and support I would not have been able to push through the pain. She helped me calm down and work with my body to help deliver baby naturally. It was a wonderful experience.
For our 2013 birth, baby was a double footling breech. I found this out at 36 weeks and Johanna was extremely helpful with emotional support about this news and also gave me practical tips and ideas for how to try and get baby to flip. Unfortunately, baby had his own plan and came only 6 days after I found out and he didn't rotate, meaning I had to have a c-section. This was very upsetting for me. Because of this I had mentally checked out, which was making contractions before the c-section very painful. Johanna helped me to focus on our baby and work with the contractions during the surgery prep. This might sound silly, but having her there was like having a warm blanket of comfort wrapped around me, and gave me the extra strength I needed to get through it.
I can wholeheartedly recommend Johanna as a doula, and anyone looking for a doula would be blessed to have her!
