I'm posting this as a regular guy who didn't know what a Doula was until the 1st month of our pregnancy. I originally wasnt crazy about the idea, since we already had a midwife... But the idea made my wife happy so we went with it.
I was immediately comforted by how calm and reassuring Sarah was when we met for our initial consultation. She didn't 'tell me this is how everything has to be done' or push her own viewpoints like I originally expected... Instead she listened about the type of birth plan we wanted, and added comments about how she could help in that matter. She also offered a few ancillary services which was nice. The whole time I felt like I really connected with her, as she was very down to Earth and not overly 'granola.' My biggest take away was that she would be there for us when we needed her.
And boy was that true. Our son decided to make an early appearance by 7 weeks, which kind of caught us off guard. The hospital was great, but the experience was SO Much less stressful thanks to having a doula (Sarah) around. Even though our Labor was only 5 or so hours, when you 1st get there you have no idea what is going to happen, and all the question marks can make you nervous. Its also nice having some one else go to bat for you when you have questions or disagreements with the doctors. I also liked knowing that I could step out for a snack and someone would still be there to comfort my wife.
She was instrumental in helping my wife relax, and giving me the confidence to do what had to be done. I still got to take part in every part of the birthing process I wanted, and she was able to answer my questions when the doctors were busy. Overall, I think the Doula helped a lot with our pregnancy and delivery. I would highly recommend Sarah... She is still a friend of ours now even after we utilized her services.
Sarah was everything we could have hoped for in a doula. She was attentive, knowledgeable, patient, and worked incredibly well with both us and the hospital staff to help us have the kind of birth experience we wanted within the constraints of the medical system. She was available and consulted with us before and after the birth, and we look forward to staying in contact with her for years to come. I have said elsewhere: if you are planning and hoping for a natural, low/no-intervention birth, you want a doula, and you want it to be her.
Sarah was an invaluable addition to our birth team. She is extremely intuitive and was able to read exatly how I needed to be approached during labor. I was a very hands off kind of person who needed to find her own way without feeling pressured. She was able to make suggestions when I was feeling lost that helped me get back into my zone. She kept my husband focused and made sure he got some rest during the long night. She worked in harmony with the rest of the nurse and midwife staff. I don't think things would have gone as smoothly without her there. Both my husband and I highly recommend Sarah for any kind of birth plan.
Our experience with Sarah was simply magnificent. The birth of our twin girls was supposed to be a C-section and so we were not planning to have a birth doula. But then, a couple of weeks before the actual birth, Baby A got into the right position for a vaginal birth. Our already hired postpartum doula recommended us Sarah and the click between her and my wife and me was immediate. Sarah was super accommodating to our last minute needs and very caring and supporting since the moment we first met. The whole labor experience was long and overwhelming. After about 30 hours and trying all possible alternatives, my wife had to have a C-section. Sarah was with us, and especially with my wife, the whole time, guiding, supporting, and patiently explaining what was going on, what to expect, etc. When the C-section was recommended, she helped us cope with the news and disappointment after all the effort that my wife had put in. Things got very emotional and confusing towards the end and her continuous care and support were just priceless. I am extremely grateful that she was with us and strongly recommend her!
An added bonus for us was her fluency in Italian!
Sarah was absolutely wonderful during the birth of our daughter. My husband and I had a labour that went from Friday 7:00 am till Saturday 6:30 am, and it was extremely tough since we wanted to do natural. When my contractions were still tolerable, Sarah did massages on me that really eased the pain. She kept reassuring me that I'm doing great and kept the outlook positive throughout all the pain. When the contractions started getting more intense (read: painful and intolerable), she kept suggesting different positions and things to do that helped ease the pain and focused on the task at hand (getting through the next contraction). Throughout it all, she was always calm, positive, and reassuring. I think one of the best things about having Sarah was that she maintained my dignity and never judged me for how I was reacting (either physically or emotionally) to what I was going through. She never hesitated to help me, no matter how embarassing it was whatever I needed her to do. She never showed signs of tiredness or strain even though it was a full 19.5 hrs (after my labour started) till I was able to get the epidural I desperately needed to fall asleep and regain my strength to push. Let me tell you, it was a tough 19.5 hrs, never mind the pushing part. Sarah was definitely an asset in our childbirth plan.
She also came before the due date to help us construct a birth plan that suited us. She helped us organize our thoughts better and gave us great support and information that helped us write the plan.
We are definitely glad we had Sarah during our labour and childbirth!
Sarah was a great gift to my husband and I during labor.
When my husband suggested we could hire a doula for my labor I was initially very dubious. I thought of giving birth as a very private event in which we wouldn't have needed any extra support from a doula. Thank goodness he convinced me of the contrary!
During my 30 hours of labor, Sarah was there for my husband and I when we needed her. A constant, quiet, and humble but invaluable presence. She never left the room, but we never felt her presence was cumbersome. She always had a kind word and she was always ready to suggest something to help. She wore a smile on her face even after 24 hours in a raw of being sleep deprived.
I could go on and on describing all the support she provided. She was great, extremely well prepared, and with an awesome attitude. Both my husband and I we feel are very lucky to have met her! It was a great gift to both mom and dad to be and we are very happy she helped us giving birth to our twin daughters!
