After a traumatic first birth coupled with postpartum depression, I knew that finding the right support for my second birth was incredibly important. I was starting to think that I would never be able to find a doula that I would be able to trust during one of the most important times of my life until I met Anna. She is someone who will take the time to listen to you and what you are looking for in a birth and proceed regardless of her own personal opinions. Never having worked at the hospital that I was giving birth at before, Anna was able to advocate for me and ensure that I was comfortable and that my needs were put first. You would have thought that she had worked with the doctor and nurses there for years! Bonus - she's hilarious!
Anna is one of the most humorous, kind-hearted people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Going into this experience of hiring a doula, I hoped for someone who was knowledgeable and helpful- with Anna and my doula team, I received so much more. Anna instantly made me feel comfortable, heard, supported and cared for. She was beyond funny (actually hysterical), she was warm and became one of the most valued members of my tribe. She and my other doula supported and advocated for me far beyond what I could have imagined. She was available day or night during my pregnancy & postpartum, was holding my hand, encouraging me to push and reassuring me through my fears during my labor and she was absolutely instrumental in my breastfeeding success. This experience which I was fearful of became joyful because of my doulas. I would highly, enthusiastically and without reservation recommend Anna. There is no other doula I would want to talk me through the pain of clogged ducts or the silly birth fears - she is amazing and this is clearly her calling. I am blessed to call her a friend!
Anna was such an amazing Doula and an amazing person overall. I was blessed to have found her and her partner for my birth experience. She is knowledgeable and gives you all options and information while making you feel confident with whichever decision you make. I truly felt that she was on my side throughout every second of my time with her. I am grateful for my birth experience because of my Doulas, I don't know how I would have done it without them. I have referred anyone I can to them now and for any future babies. I will definitely be calling them again for my next bundle of joy.
I am so thankful that I had Anna as my doula for my VBAC. She was so positive and such a wealth of information leading up to the birth of my son. She kept me calm and helped me to manage my pain during labor. I would not have been able to do it without her. She even remembered that my husband was worried about not eating and made sure he got some dinner early in my labor! I knew Anna was my girl from just talking on the phone. I felt even more reassured once I met her in person. She was great with texting me to see how I was feeling and made sure follow up about how each of my doctors appointments went. I will be using Anna again when we choose to add to our family in the future!
My experience with my doula Anna was wonderful. She fully tailored our birth experience in accordance with our wishes. She is knowledgeable in childbirth, breastfeeding and child rearing. She was available to me at all hours for any questions or concerns I had. We drew up a comprehensive birth plan that covered everything my husband and I wanted. When my delivery day came, Anna was with us all the way, and when it became apparent that there would need to be a change in plans after a very long labor, she helped guide us to make clear-minded choices in changing our birth plan to fit our new needs. I'm so glad I had someone to help explain all my options in the moment and be supportive of what my needs and wants were. After the birth, Anna was helpful with tons of advice for breasfeeding and general baby care. She visited us at home with follow-up advice and to make sure that I was successful in breastfeeding, which did not come easily to my little one. She was a lifesaver, and I would recommend her to anyone who is looking for a doula.
I had the pleasure of having Anna Gourlay-Irons as my doula for my first and second pregnancies. Her emotional support, and wealth of knowledge were invaluable to me. I was young and inexperienced in pregnancy and child rearing, but Anna was the perfect couch for me. She taught me the pros and cons of breastfeeding, vaginal births, c-sections, post natal care, and many other useful things. She was an invaluable help during my pregnancy, during labor, and after my children were born. I couldn't imagine having anyone else as my doula! She is passionate, caring, informative, and an awesome person. I would strongly recommend her to anyone in search of a dooula!
Anna Gourlay-Irons was with me for the labor and birth of my third child. Although I had given birth already to two healthy babies, there were things I wanted to have in my birthing experiences that I couldn't get at my first two births. Anna helped me get those things, namely laboring in a position comfortable for me (upright) and on a yoga ball. These sound like simple requests but I couldn't convince the staff to let me have them during my previous labors.
Anna was able to communicate my wishes to the staff and let me labor with less distractions. I am pretty focused and touchy during labor; I don't like answering questions over and over again. Since Anna knew my birth plan and was able to answer things the staff asked multiple times, it took a weight off my shoulders and let me concentrate on the birth. For example, I didn't want an epidural or pain medication, nor a circumcision for a boy, and it was a relief to know she would tell them "No" every time they asked.
Laboring on the ball was easier being flat on my back on the hospital bed and I handled my contractions better, so much better that my water broke earlier than we expected.
Anna saw that merconium (baby's first bowel movement) was present in the fluid, and she quickly told me, made sure I was safe and secure, and then sprinted off to notify a staff member (she'd rung the bell already but considering the response time, I was glad she went to fetch a nurse). She didn't panic when she saw the merconium, and she comforted and assured me through the rest of my labor (which was very short). She kept me updated as to my daughter's appearance and Apgar and everything else I wanted to know after the nurses whisked her away to suction her and check her out.
My daughter was fine in the end, no inhalation, no injury, and I attribute most of that to Anna.
It might sound incredibly melodramatic but I knew Anna was a match as soon as I saw her. I had been on the search for the right doula for a couple of months now, and was starting to give up hope when I was blessed with Anna. I was finishing up my baby registry and Anna happened to be teaching a breast feeding class at the same Babies R Us. We made eye contact and she handed me a bag of free samples- which, of course, every mom to be can appreciate. She then handed me her card reading "Little Loves...Anna Gourlay-Irons, Birth Doula. I immediately told her of my desire to work with a birth doula, because of how unique my family situation is. We just clicked and no sooner did we get to know a little about each other and just how far along I was in my pregnancy. .37 weeks along to be exact, haha! I spent the following days reaching out to her about how uncomfortable I was, concerns about labor, and how hard it was going to be on me emotionally. Anna walked me through everything. She was and still is such an amazing support system for me post partum. I couldn't have asked for a better doula!
