My number one advice to first time parents is, “Hire a doula”! One of the best decisions my husband and I made during our pregnancy was hiring Sam. She has experience in a multitude of birth settings, which served us immensely well as our Plan A went out the window and we headed to an unexpected cesarean birth at the hospital. I was completely disappointed and intimidated by the turn of events. Sam held my hand literally and figuratively throughout. She helped us weigh our options and made us confident in our decisions. Sam turned a scary and unexpected situation into an empowering and overwhelmingly positive experience. (She even grabbed my husband's phone and took our first family photos in the operating room, and we couldn't have been more grateful)! I cannot imagine having gone through this first birth experience without Sam by our side.
I chose Sam as my doula because of her calm, yet confident temperament; her vast experience; and her sincere desire to help mothers during and after the birth process. I believe that I was able to have the labor and delivery I desired (labor at home as long as possible, minimal medical intervention, etc) because of Sam's involvement as my doula.
My labor started with little-to-no warning signs, yet Sam was able to quickly and effectively jump into action. I had taken a birth class and done the pre-requisite reading about labor, but I learned the value of having someone who KNOWS the birth process with you. Sam calmed my nerves about the pain I was experiencing (with both mental and physical pain coping techniques, and with advice about the process/what was coming/what I was currently experiencing). This allowed me to progress through labor more efficiently, and in an empowering way. It also allowed my partner to belatdly pack our hospital bag, haha!
I was impressed with Sam's knowledge of the hospital's processes and staff. She knew both of the triage staff, and the on-call midwife (my practices' staff had the day off). Without Sam, there would've been a lot of unkowns at the hospital (and more generally)-with her, I was able to foresee obstacles and get around them with ease. In all, I spent about 3 hours in labor at the hospital, and had a healthy birth with minimal medical intervention--just what I wanted!
Sam's services include a pre-natal and post-natal visit, at which we discussed subjects from breast feeding to self-care. Additionally, I was diagnosed with Group-B strep, and Sam helped me find literature on the subject, which allowed me to actively participate in treatment conversations with my midwife.
My partner and I are very satisfied with my labor and delivery, and credit Sam for that 100%.
We hired Sam for our second child’s birth. Sam came highly recommended by our previous Doula, who ended up being identified as our backup this delivery.
Sam met with us prior to the birth and addressed all our concerns and questions. She took time to understand and comprehend our birth plan and desires for a home delivery. She also challenged us to communicate about how another child would change our family and our relationship as husband and wife. The questions she asked us to answer made us consider what life would look like with two children. This was extremely valuable!
When the moment arrived Sam kept in communication with us and made herself available as soon as we requested she join me in labor.
Sam provided support and suggestions that assisted in progressing my labor along. She was a constant presence that provided encouragement reminders that I could do it!
Sam has many years of experience and we are thrilled that we were able to tap into that knowledge during labor and delivery. We highly recommend her as a Doula.
My husband and I hired Samantha Schlazer as our doula for the birth of our daughter last November. It was our first child and we knew that we wanted a natural birth at the hostpital. Several of our friends and family suggested that we hire a doula as a support and I am so glad that we found Sam! She was actually the first doula that we interviewed and we knew that we wanted her right away. She has incredible experience with births, has four kids of her own, and was very supportive of how we wanted to do things.
We really appreciated her wisdom and trusted her opinion. We met with her a couple times before the birth and she was available for questions during the 10 days that we waited after my daughters due date. I labored at home for 10 of the 16 hours of labor and Sam was there for every minute that we needed her.
She also applied the much-needed counterpressure on my back for the whole day through my back labor. My husband especially liked having someone else there to suggest different postitions and things so that he could focus on me.
Sam was so patient, kind, supportive and wise throughout the whole experience! We are so greatful for her support in having the birth that we wanted!
Sam was there for us from the months prior to the birth through to the big decision of a sudden C-Section and then afterwards. Her support and constant availability for even the silliest of first time mom questions made her an amazing doula. Sam was and is a great support for me and our family. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a smart, caring, flexible and all around bad-ass doula! -The Youngbloods
First and foremost, we feel truly lucky and grateful that our life path crossed with that of Sam. Claire is our first kid and first daugther, so we are dedicated to provide her the best we can afford even before her due date. So we started interviewing doulas in town early in this pregnancy. I had done tons of research and I know I am thorough since doing research is part of my job (FSU professor). Sam's CV is impressive, and she is even more impressive when I met her, espcially her abundant experience, cute personality, and her professionalism (special note about professionalism: most of doulas we interviewed expecting us, the parents-to-be, to ask questions. But Sam knows what questions you shjould ask, and she provides the answers). So choosing her as our doula is a simple decision.
On the day of delivery, Sam helped my wife to manage her pain and facilitated the labor process like most of doulas should do, but what's more important is her constant ecouragement that magically helped my wife go through the process in 3 hours without using any pain medication. As the panicing birdy husband in the delivery room, I couldn't thank her more in telling me what I should do as a husband, and what is normal, and what she would do to help us. She is indeed amazing through the whole process.
The only pitfall about having Sam as your doula can only be that she is too popular. So if you ever think you need a doula, you should call her now.
Sam truly has a gift and was everything we needed in a Doula - supportive, patient, compassionate, present, encouraging, empathetic, knowledgable, available, and strong. She was full of information, experience, and wisdom throughout my pregnancy because she has attended hundreds of births. She was reassuring, available, and empathetic during my weeks of false labor because she had experienced it first hand. She was patient, supportive, encouraging, helpful, and fully present during my 17 hours of active labor. She was the perfect coach for my husband and me… helping him know how to help me. Most of all, she was strong for me and our baby, and helped me to dig deep and find new strength when I was not physically or mentally able to (after 12 hours of active labor, plus 5 hours of pushing, a big baby that was stuck, and talk of a c-section). Sam was absolutely incredible for us and she’s infinitely more valuable than any dollar amount you pay for her. She single handedly saved my baby and me from a c-section and I am forever grateful for her to her core.
She was also an incredible source of support for me during those early postpartum days when I was struggling with heavy baby blues… trying to figure out if I needed to get medical help for anxiety. She sat with me, listened, shared her experience, and hugged me tight during some of my darkest days.
Sam is an incredible and inspiring woman - you will be a better person for having her along side you during your pregnancy, birth, and/or postpartum… no matter the circumstance or birth plan!
Sam was an incredible support to me during my pregnancy and labor. She is well organized, has lots of experience, and really made me feel at ease during my birth, which did not go as originally planned. I had hoped for a home birth, but ended up needing to be induced at the hospital, which absolutely terrified me, but Sam kept a level head, helped me ask the right questions and stand up for myself and what I wanted, and made sure I understood everything that was going on. I was able to have a beautiful, positive, natural birth that I am so thankful for. Not only was she a wonderful doula and support to me and my husband as we went through labor, she also became our friend. She has a wonderful, friendly, funny personality, and we were immediately drawn to her upon first meeting her. I highly recommend Sam as a doula, and would use her for all my births!
My husband and I decided a VBAC birth was right for us the second time around so we also decided to have a doula present for this birth. It was the best decision we could've made! We had Sam attend our hospital birth and we could not have done it without her! She was amazing, and so encouraging for all the many hours I labored which totaled about 37 hours. Anything that i asked for, or needed Sam was right there getting it and making sure i was well taken care of. She encouraged me when I doubted myself. My husband was so happy she was there too, it gave him a much needed break. He kept saying how blessed we were to have found Sam. She is the most patient and kind hearted person you will ever meet. Sam was truly amazing and I wish I could have had her around for my first birth. She truly made me believe in myself and I am proud to have had her attend one of the most important events in our lives! Thank You Sam!!
Hiring Sam as my birth doula is one of best decisions in my life. Without Sam, I could not imagine what would have happened. On July 14 around 11:40pm, I started regular painful contractions at 38 weeks 4 days gestational age after a few days of lots of Braxton Hicks contractions. At the moment of realizing my labor was coming, I immediately contacted her by texting messages. She responded quickly and advised me what to do. When I needed her, she showed up in 15 min. It was her who guided me through the entire labor process. Under her guidance, I had a successful VBAC without any medication. The entire labor only took 2-3 hours! What a blessing to me! In the situation of emergency, she responded to my every need so professionally. When my contractions were 2-3 min apart at home, she suggested me to go to the hospital quickly (I thought the pain was still endurable at that time). Before I got into the car, my water broke, she checked the color of fluid for me. While she was driving to the hospital, I started to have the urge to push, she taught me how to let the urge go by breathing. On the way, she called the hospital to get ready for me. So when we arrived, a medical team was already waiting. She answered every question for me to save my strength. At triage, I was checked, and my cervix was completely dilated. Then I was moved quickly to the delivery room. She explained every step to me clearly during the process. Then very soon after a few pushes, my son was born!
At that time, my husband was in another state because of his job. My mom was in the house with my six years old. So only Sam was taking care of me during my labor in the hospital. But I did not feel being alone. So I thank God who brought me Sam as my birth support person. My family and I are so thankful!!Thank you, Sam!
Samantha Schlazer is good at what she does because being a doula isn't just a job to her, it's who she is. Not only does she bring who she is to the table, but she really digs deep into you to find out who YOU are and she is so diverse and understanding that she will meet you on your level so that you become one in your pregnancy and labor process. Samantha was always just a call away and she helped A LOT post labor. Although she states her services offer a post partum visit, she goes beyond that if needed. I had a few issues post partum and Samantha was there to walk through them with me. Samantha is such a kind-hearted, gentle soul who added such beauty to my first pregnancy. Thank you Samantha.
Sam is absolutely amazing! She is a caring, warm hearted ,and just a lovely person. I was anxious when trying to find a doula who was familiar with cleft palets. Even though Sam had never dealt with a baby with a cleft palet , she educated herself about different feeding bottles and asked the right questions before starting with us. I didn't have to ask her to educate herself on my daughters condition , she took it upon herself to do so which I highly admired. Sam listened to my needs and offered advice when I asked for it . She answered so many questions I had and was truly there for me when I needed someone during the first few months of my daughters life. Sam was a true blessing in our lives and we are forever greatful for her help.
Sam is an extraordinary doula and person! Sam was with us for 6 months before and after the birth of my daughter. Sam quickly became a part of the family and answered all of our questions as it was our first child (and we have hundreds of questions on the preganancy as well as what products are most helpful). Sam was especially wonderful with my wife coaching her through every step of the pregnancy and providing an amazing support system. We will definietly use Sam again in the future and can not recommend her enough. If you are looking for unmatched service with your pregnancy Sam is the best in the business!
When we were expecting our first child I was not sure about much; however, one thing I was sure about was that I wanted to experience pregnancy, labor and delivery as natural as possible. We knew from the beginning we wanted a doula and found Sam to be a perfect match for us. I am a very timid decision maker and can be insecure so we immediately felt a connection to Samantha's energy and confidence. Throughout my pregnancy she was a wonderful resource for information and guidance. When we approached 42 weeks and there was no baby Sam helped my husband and I understand the induction process and assured us she would do everything possible to help us adapt & move forward with a pain-medication free experience. During labor Sam refused to let me give up; she gently pushed me and reminded me of my goal and what was awaiting Hunter and I at the end of this journey. She showed my husband how to support me and helped guide the connection between him and I in my moments of weakness and most importantly she gave me reassurance that I could do it! I truly feel that had Sam not been present for our birth things could have went a totally different direction. We look forward to having her by our side for our future pregnancies!
I am not sure what my birth experience would have been like without Sam - having her as a doula enabled us to have a joy-filled experience. This was my fifth birth, but as my others were atypical, I knew I would need help - and she was perfect. She is incredible at understanding and explaining the movements of early labor; I had contractions intermittently for about a week before going into active labor, and she was always there to talk about what was happening and to share her knowledge. She also knew exactly when it was time to head to the hospital. Without her, I'm not sure how I would have made it through those early stages. When it came time for active labor, she was completely supportive of decisions that I made and helped me to see my own needs clearly - even though those decisions and needs were very different from what we thought they would be. In this, she also provided crucial support to my husband, who needed to hear someone else say that our decisions were fine and necessary. My baby's middle name (Irene) means "peace" because of the peace that surrounded us during her birth - and Sam contributed to that peace and helped make it possible.
I can't recommend Sam strongly enough. She is a mother herself and very much understands the birthing process from within. She is a loving and generous woman who makes the perfect doula. Thank you, Sam, for everything you gave us!
I can not say enough good things about Sam. She was there for me before, during and after the birth of my sweet little guy. I gave birth 2 weeks after my due date at a hospital. My doctor had suggested being induced fairly soon after my estimated due date had past. It was so nice to be able to talk through everything with Sam. She was able to offer options as well as resources for me to feel good about the decision I made. Ultimately, I did have to be induced, but I was aware of what my options were and I was in charge of the process. Sam knew what my wishes were and was able to help my husband and I stick to our wishes despite the pressure from the nurses to use unnecessary interventions. I couldn't imagine labor and delivery without Sam. She provided knowlege, comfort, options, and support. I was able to have the natural child birth experience I had planned even with the way it started. Another wonderful thing about Sam, was the support she provided after the birth. I was so happy to have her there to help with alot of the unknows of becoming a new parent like breastfeeding and understanding the baby's needs. I remember my husband and I being in awe when she came for her post birth visit and the ease and comfort she had with our little guy. She shared with us what she knows about caring for new borns. If that isn't enough, I was able to call Sam and talk with her about a struggle I was having with breastfeeding. I had to leave my little guy for 2 days when he was 5 months old for a dream job interview. When I returned, he was not nursing. I was getting so stressed and worried. Sam walked me through steps to ensure that we could get back to our wonderful nursing relationship. I am very grateful for Sam and the support that she provided me and my growing family! I know that if she wasn't invovled, I would have had a very different experince, and i am grateful for the experinece I had.
I don't know what I would have done without Sam as our doula. While I was pregnant she was always there to answer any questions I had. She was a great resource, so knowledgeable. The night I went into labor she came to our house and helped us through it all. This being our first child, we had no idea what was going on or when we should call our midwife. Sam took care of everything. We would have been nervouse wrecks without her. As labor progressed there were many times I wanted to give up and go to the hospital for drugs!! Sam talked me through it, she was the voice of reason. Sam was my strength during my labor and I know my husband was so happy to have her because he needed the guidance as well! We couldn't have done it without her. I can't say enough wonderful things about her!! She has also been there for me after the birth. We will definitely have Sam be our doula for our next baby!
my husband is military and we were unsure if he was going to be around for the birth of our sweet baby, our first at that. We have great friends and a good support system but I wanted someone with me the entire time I labored in case my husband couldn't be. This is where Sam came in. I couldn't ask for a better birth coach, doula, friend, and book of knowledge! Sam is all that rolled into one! My husband who wasn't resllynon board with getting a doula now says it's the best decision we made! Sam reads the room, she's hands on needed, offers advice and knowledge at just the moment, and encouraged with and without words depending on your needs. Sam has an awesome background not only from the classroom boon side of life but with her own life experiences. She brought so much to the table when I needed it. Shes not just there during labor but before and after. our little guy is 4 months old and she still checks in periodically to see how we are! If we decide to have any more children I'd go to the ends of the earth to have her by our side again!
Sam was a huge comfort to my husband and i as we prepared for our first child, especially in a city where we had no family to help us. Her knowledge and connections to outside resources were invaluable, as well as her sweet, caring personality. Never once did we feel judged or scolded for our decisions; she was always suppportive, understanding, and exactly what we needed. I would recommend Sam in a heartbeat, and she will be our frst choice for doula for our next baby, too.
Sam was the gentle guiding hand during my 3rd birth that gave me complete relaxation. I never knew it was possible to sleep before pushing and her calm presence set the mood. The connection she helped to establish between my husband and myself was everlasting. Sam recognized when I needed a cold cloth, water, and a different position but was able to be the peaceful connection in the room. Her ever birth trusting philosophy effected me in ways that changed my life completely and I am so grateful to have her in my life -Grace
