I had a lot of anxiety going into childbirth, and it was very important to me to find a doula who would listen, provide information, and honor my choices. I was curious about having an unmediated birth, but open to getting an epidural as well, and Ame was totally supportive of that and offered me valuable perspective to help prepare to make those decisions during birth. But she also empowered and encouraged me throughout pregnancy and helped me feel more confident. In the end, as labor progressed, I realized that with Ame’s physical and emotional support, I didn’t need any additional pain relief! I went from being consumed with fear to cherishing my positive birth experience and Ame was a big part of that!
I can't say enough good things about Ame. When we were preparing for the birth of our first baby, we knew we wanted to have some extra support leading up to and during labor. We met with Ame when we were interviewing doulas and my husband and I both liked her approach to the birth experience. She listed to us and asked great questions to understand the type of birth we were hoping for. She has a wealth of knowledge and such a caring personality that we felt completely at ease with her.
Ame met with us a few times before I went into labor to go over our birth plan and to help us wrap our minds around preparing for everything. She was always available for questions and when I did go into labor she was very quick to respond to be there for us.
At the birth center, she applied counter pressure and also coached my husband on how to help me through the contractions. She could tell when I needed extra help and offered me honey sticks or to smell an essential oil at the right time. When one position for pushing didn't seem to be helping things progress, she offered more ideas to help keep things moving. I know I wasn't able to think of all those ideas in the moment and I am so grateful that she was there to offer them.
After the baby was born she checked in on us and made sure we were taken care of and had the help we needed. I would highly recommend anyone going through the birth experience for the first time to have a doula like Ame with them. She is a gem.
I can't recommend Ame and Laurel enough! I got my unmedicated VBAC in March 2017. My first pregnancy was uneventful, but resulted in an emergency c-section due to fetal distress. I did not hire a doula that time.
When I got pregnant the second time, I thought, "I'm not going to be a hero! I need support. I need people who know birth and deal with it every day to support me through this, as I try to have a different outcome." I met with Ame and Laurel and hired them on the spot. I felt heard, and I felt like we really clicked.
I started out in midwife care, and was passionate about birthing at home. However, at the beginning of my third trimester, I started testing my blood glucose levels and ended up having to transfer to an OB practice. I was so unbelievably upset to lose the chance to birth at home. I was also devastated to lose the relationship I had developed with my midwife.
Ame to the rescue! Ame helped me over the phone during this time with multiple calls to help me sort through my options for finding a practice. She was also the one constant when everything around me seemed to be changing. As a healthcare professional, I trusted her knowledge of the system and facilities I had to choose from.
She talked me through many decision points. I remember crying in a hot bath talking on the phone about the c-section my OB wanted to schedule for me due to gestational diabetes.
On the big day, Laurel and Ame were by my side as my stop / start labor turned into a super-quickly progressing event! We had to make many quick decisions that day and ended up going to a different hospital than we planned. There was no hour-long car ride to meet the OB. Instead, there was a speedy zip up to a closer facility and I gave birth about 30 minutes after arriving. The baby and I fared well. I am immensely grateful.
My husband and I had been exploring doulas during my second trimester with our first child. We had a number of appointments lined up, however when we met Ame we knew right away that she would be who we wanted along with us as we became parents! We were so certain of this we cancelled all other subsequent interviews.
Ame brought such a genuine, caring, informative & attentive energy to our birth experience. I really appreciated how she was not only looking out for me, but also my husband, every step of the way. She is a seasoned doula and offered a wealth of knowledge on the process, thoroughly answering our questions and offering her insights from decades in the field. Her range of knowledge is only matched by her caring nature for the emotional health of both parents involved. She is a strong advocate for her clients and takes this role very seriously. It meant so much to me to have such a strong female presence with me in the delivery room. She is incredibly professional in the support she provides, all the while coming from a sincere and nurturing place. She has a unique, caring approach and the gift at connecting with others. She brings warmth, humor, compassion, empathy, enthusiasm, and a sense of empowerment to those she serves. After our son's birth, she even offered assistance in exploring additional resources from which we could benefit. She went above and beyond for us as we navigated this new world of being parents, offering guidance & suggestions when we were feeling exhausted and overwhelmed. We are just ever so grateful for her and highly recommend her doula services to anyone looking for quality support on this journey!
We could not have asked for a better birth experience with Ame as our doula. From pregnancy to labor to those foggy postpartum days, Ame was there with her kind, gentle energy and wealth of knowledge. Both Tim and I felt supported without feeling as if someone else was taking over or interfering in what can be an undoubtedly special but intense time. We are so thankful to Ame for helping us have the birth experience we wanted and feel as if we gained a friend as well as a doula!
Ame Solomon was an invaluable support and resource in the final weeks of my second pregnancy. We hired Ame, with the intention that she would support us in the birth of our second child. But, the support that she provided extended far beyond the birth. One of Ame’s gifts is her ability to listen to her clients hopes for their birth and ask the important questions that will allow them the best chance of realizing their dreams. Through her careful listening and persistent, challenging questions, Ame supported us in finding the midwifery care that best fit our needs.
When my pregnancy extended to almost 42 weeks, Ame was a constant support. She encouraged rest and self-care that contributed immensely to my energy level and overall health. She was a sounding board and invaluable resource for my endless questions about signs of early labor and alternatives to induction. Finally, she provided the nurturing, emotional support that allowed me to address my fears and clear my mind for the birth. In the midst of our surprisingly rapid home birth, it was Ame who my husband called. She reassured and guided him over the phone as we delivered our son unexpectedly at home. In the days and weeks post-partum, Ame was a constant support. She listened to us as we processed and reprocessed our birth story. Throughout our reflections, she offered endless insight from her years of experience in birth as a midwife and doula.
Hiring Ame was one of the most important decisions we made in our pregnancy. Her expertise and support played a significant role in the positive outcome of our birth and transition into a family of four.
Ame and I became friends when my first child was still an infant. Ame gave me critical advice about how to survive and thrive as a new mom and how to make sure my little boy did, as well. She is marvelous with babies: my son suffered from severe allergies and had a hard time feeling comfortable as an infant, yet in Ame’s arms, he immediately became peaceful and would even coo! I would recommend Ame for infant post-partum care more highly than anyone else.
I would also choose Ame more than anyone else for birth assistance. She was a powerful force in helping me to succeed at a VBAC home water birth with my daughter. Ame combines wisdom and medical knowledge with good intentions and a deep spirituality. It is hard to find this combination in people nowadays! Usually, they are coldly clinical, or they are so deeply spiritual that their attention to medical necessities and emergencies is weak. Ame excels at both.
I cannot offer enough complements about this treasured woman. She is a gift to all the mothers, infants, and children lucky enough to encounter her.
We had such a wonderful birthing experience with Ame! Upon meeting her for the first time my husband and I felt a connection with her - warm personality, easy to talk to - she made us both feel very comfortable. My husband and I had strong feelings about how we wanted labor to go, and by that I mean I wanted Ben to be my main support, my rock through it all. I wanted him to be the one holding me, rubbing my back, etc. I had a very difficult and long (23 hour) labor and Ame was so great about communicating with him. She gave him ideas and ways to help me and was there the entire time... a marathon! She was a huge support for Ben so that he could be the support I needed. She was so good at listening to what we desired and helping us achieve it. We were both so happy to have her there with us, especially when there was talk of doing a c-section. (I am a nurse and quite comfortable in "the medical world", but as the patient I was in a completely different state of mind). Ame empowered us in a tough situation and long story short I safely delivered a beautiful baby girl vaginally. We never had a single regret about having Ame with us - she truely enriched the whole experience for us!
I pride myself on being someone who can see, learn, do. Childbirth and what follows taught me this method does not apply. I began working with Ame (taking her childbirth ed class) the day before my little one arrived 2 weeks early. Immediately Ame became one of my husband and I's favorites through our childbirth and beyond process. Her ability to genuinely care for another human being both in a very physical and phychological sense is what I would say is her gift.
Ame stayed with me for hours on end when my milk came in (very painfully) and would not come out. On the verge of acquiring mastitis, she stayed at my house late into the night until we did everything under the sun to get that milk out! She was great! In the weeks that followed, and my first time mom ignorance of thinking I would be able to "do it all", I came to the grave realization that having a little one with the challenges that only come with being early, and small, I could not in fact do it all, much less do much! Ame came to my house in the way a friend does and spent countless hours on the phone and emailing back and forth to help my family and I get the help we needed. Never once did she give up on me, although I went through some rough stuff (not being able to breastfeed despite an abuldant supply), lack of sleep (we're literally talking minutes each night for the first couple months), a baby who only wants to be held, etc, on top of raising a step child, and dealing with pets, and the inevitable dirty house!
I would refer Ame to anyone in a heartbeat based on the few things I've mentioned above and all of the things there is not room enough to talk about in this small space. She is a friend, coach, drill sargeant (in the best way possible), cheerleader, and the "mom" who listens without judgment and finds solutions when none seem apparent. I am so thankful to her for her kindness and strength.
