Heather was amazing. She met with us multiple times during the pregnancy process, and help us gain a better understanding of what to expect. She also helped us develop a birth plan, and most importantly, she helped us get through the labor and delivery, which was 36 hours long. We couldn't have done it without her. I would highly recommend her, particularly two couples like us who were having their first child and weren't sure how things were going to go.

Heather Self was the only person I even considered for doula services as she is a personal friend. Her calm demeanor and her background in the Hakomi method of mindfulness training were just right for me. As I live relatively far away, we had phone meetings regularly to discuss my progress and how things were going througout my pregnancy and she made it a point to come in person to show my husband and me some pain management techniques well before my due date. She had great resources and made herself very available to me.

I had a very long labor and Heather was there with me through it all. I had a fabulous midwife who had asked me to really think about the roles that each person attending my birth would play. My husband, my mother, Heather, and my midwife were in attendance, and Heather was very respectful of the midwife's expertise and knew when to take a leading role and when to take the supporting role. She stayed up with me laboring through the night so that my husband could take needed rest. She supported my mother and made her feel more comfortable throughout the home birth process, and when we all decided that it was time to go to the hospital to induce the labor, Heather was supportive of my decision and was a wonderful help in the birthing room at the hospital. I can't tell you how many times she went back and forth to refresh the compress for my perineum! Hundreds, probably!

I believe that Heather's experiences with birth, from her doula practice to her own birth, make her extremely well-equipped to help a woman through what is the most transformative and physically traumatic experiences in her life. I give her my highest commendations, and I know that my son's birth would not have been nearly as wonderful as it was without her presence. Though it was not the home birth that we had envisioned, it was the right birth for my son, and it unfolded with grace and beauty thanks to those around me and to my son.

Heather was truly a blessing to us after the birth of my fourth child. It had been 10 years since my previous child was born so in many ways it felt like I was learning everything all over again, and it Caleb is my husband's first child. Caleb was born via emergency C-section and the physical and psychological effects of that were very overwhelming. Heather visited us once a week for several weeks and spent a lot of calm, quiet time talking over the events and helping us to make sense of everything we were feeling. After each visit we experienced a sense of calm and relief as well as having new avenues for continued discussion. Heather was able to a vocabulary for my trauma. She was also able to affirm that a lot of the unexpected feelings on Matt's part were totally normal for a new father, and this knowledge alone gave him confidence and tremendous relief.

In addition to the visits, Heather brought us several delicious and healthy meals that she had prepared, as well as bring meals from close friends, which was incredibly heartwarming and appreciated by all. It is amazing the difference a meal makes when the grown-ups are exhausted but the kids still need to be fed. It's like a deep, happy breath.

I cannot recommend Heather highly enough. I got the distinct impression that she was incredibly flexible, intuitive, and receptive to our specific needs. Her help was invaluable to me, even as an experienced mother.
