Sometimes, things just feel right. After interviewing Ann, we were so impressed that we canceled our interviews with other doulas. I'm glad we did! We worked with her during the birth of my second child, during which I wanted to try for a VBAC without an epidural. Although I ended up getting another c-section, I was MUCH more satisfied with the overall birth experience the second time around than with my daughter four years ago and felt empowered during the entire time. I will credit much of that to Ann’s constant support and advocacy. (I should add that, during my first birth, I did not have a doula or a midwife, both of which were mistakes!)
Ann did an excellent job of working with my husband and my midwife and knowing when to come in to help versus step back. She supported every decision I made along the way without judgment, providing helpful information. That has to be a challenging balancing act, but her experience shone through in this area. Before working with her, was a bit concerned going through this intimate experience with someone was essentially a stranger. I needn't have worried; Ann put me at complete ease.
I loved that she let my husband and I take the lead and she was truly there to support as needed. Although my husband has been an excellent birth partner, she had many pain management techniques up her sleeve that made me more comfortable. It is because of her that I was able to achieve my goal of making it through many hours of labor without an epidural. Ultimately, I ended up requesting an epidural, as well as a c-section (the baby wasn’t doing great during the pushing phase and I wasn’t making any progress on pushing after almost two hours) but I felt as though I was more empowered throughout the entire experience and ultimately, Ann left me feeling much more satisfied with the outcome this time around. I would recommend her to anyone I know who is having a baby, no matter their birth plan.
My experience with Ann Carter was a wonderful one. When I realized that I was going to have zero support from friends and family (the only exception was my father in-law) the mid-wife that delivered my first child recomended that I hire a doula. I had a week and a half until my due date. I found Ann online and when I called her I feel like we connected right away. She was very understanding of my situation and from the first time we talked I felt confident that I was going to have all the support I was going to need. She called me or texted me during that time to see how I was doing, if i wanted someone to talk to she was available anytime! Even the wee hours. My water broke in the morning and throughout the day she was contacting me to make sure I was ok. I didn't go into labour until that evening, when I called her around 11:00 pm she came to my house and sat and talked to me until my contractions were at the point that the midwives wanted me to come in. Around 3:00 am. She followed me to the birthing center, while my father in-law drove me and my 2 year old. When we arrived at the birthing center she was at my side the entire time. She held my hand, rubbed my back, brought me water or juice if I wanted it. She was great!! She talked me through the worst contractions and helped me focus my energy on delivering my baby. I don't know what I would have done if she had not been there. She stayed with me until I was comfortable and resting. She gave me words of wisdom on my transition into being mommy for two. I will treasure my experience with ann for the rest of my life. She helped bring my beautiful son into the world. I would highly recomend Ann, you will find her to be warm, compassionate and knowledgeable.
