Frances was our saving grace Through our pregnancy all the way to post natal care. I cannot say enough good things about our experience. We did not have an easy labor but having her there kept my husband and I both calm and confident in our options we chose. I no doubt will have her at my second birth!
Frances was an AMAZING doula! I'm sure I could have had a birth experience without her, but I'm glad I didn't have to! From start to finish, she was with me every step of the way- Skyping with us while we were overseas, checking in often via text and phone, coming to our home to instruct us before birth, answering our call in the middle of the night... She was thorough and knowledgeable and such a calming presence. She listened to our wishes beforehand, but when things didn't work out (as they so often don't), she was right there with us, patient and flexible, encouraging me with whatever I decided to do. She stayed with us overnight and told me stories about her own births to help ease my mind. She stayed to help with nursing and visited our home after the birth to check in. My husband and I both can't sing her praises enough!
We also hired Frances to take our birth photos and they were breathtakingly beautiful. I highly recommend Frances for birth photography, too!
Unfortunately, my husband and I were not able to experience the natural birth that we prepared for. Frances was encouraging and helped me retain as much control as possible throughout my labor, despite the medical interventions. She worked tirelessly for about 14 hours applying counter pressure, recommending positions, giving me water, and being an advocate.
After a very long and tiring day, my son was delivered via c-section. My husband was with the baby, who was not doing well. Frances fought alongside my sister for updates about my condition and to see me. I remember the relief I felt when I saw Frances in recovery. I suffered some serious complications after the c-section, and Frances held my hand through it until my husband arrived and she was asked to leave the crowded room.
Frances continued to check on me in the days that followed. I refused visitors during my long hospital stay as I was having a difficult time processing everything that happened. During that time, Frances was my friend. She was someone who knew what I had been through without me having to talk about it. I texted her questions about breastfeeding probably every day for a while, and she was a safe place for me to vent about a difficult recovery. My son will be 1 next month and we're still breastfeeding and doing great!
If you're surfing doula testimonials, you're probably after that empowering, natural childbirth experience. I truly wish you all the best in that! The fact is, with childbirth comes an inherent degree of uncertainty (believe me, I know!). Frances will help you to confidently and holistically navigate that uncertainty, giving you peace of mind during the process.
Frances is a great doula. She is the only reason I made it through six days of prodromal labor without completely losing my mind. Her calm and reassuring presence, thorough knowledge and encouraging support turned what could have been a terrifying and disappointing labor/birth experience into one I could handle. She's also an incredible birth photographer, and the slideshow of images she provided after my delivery perfectly captured the beauty of my last two days of labor and the delivery of my son. I probably won't have any more children, but if I do, she is the first person I am going to call.
I don't even know if I can put into words what a difference Frances made in our experience. It was night and day from our previous attempt at a natural birth. During our initial meeting we immediately knew we would be a great fit. During a home visit she brought all of her doula stuff and showed us the ropes making us feel so at ease for what was ahead. We had our birth plan, we knew what to expect, And we had our cheerleader and coach!
Initially my husband was worried that his role would be diminished if we were to bring in someone else. It turned out to be the exact opposite! Frances was a silent guide, keeping us both calm and allowing us to work well together. I can remember standing in the hospital arms around my husbands neck, swaying to the pressure of a contraction while Frances applied counter pressure to my hips. The contraction ended and she faded away. She had an amazing ability to be exactly as present as I needed her. She gently suggested position changes, chatted between contractions when I needed distraction, and fetched me socks without my even realizing I needed them! The difference between labors was truly amazing because of her calming presence!! Deep into labor she left for a bathroom break and my husband and I looked at each other and said, "hiring Frances was the best decision all pregnancy" and I still believe it!!
We worked with Frances this summer for the birth of our first baby, Ginny. Having Frances as our doula was fantastic from beginning to end!
From our very first meeting, up through our postpartum appointment she was so incredible to work with. Knowledgeable, kind, funny, warm, confident--she was such a great fit for us. We felt like she was always able to answer our questions in a straightforward and honest way. She spend so much time connecting with us, learning about who we are, explaining the process, helping us with our birth plan, teaching us birthing positions, giving us information about breast feeding, and just giving time and attention to anything that we wanted to focus on.
She was very holistic in her approach and was extremely adept at giving practical knowledge about the birth process coupled with a warm, confident spirt that put us at ease, calmed our worries and fears, and helped us have a sense of peace and excitement about our birth.
On the day of the birth she was consistently easily available with helpful input (she talked us through the water breaking at home and helped us get in positions that would hold off the urge to push until we were able to get to the hospital). Once we got to the hospital we ended up having a very quick labor experience, but Frances was there every step of the way: making sure mom was comfortable, giving encouraging words, literally and figuratively providing support while in active labor. She also took some amazing, beautiful photos of our birth and our first moments together as a family. After our daughter was born, the postpartum visit was also extremely helpful as Frances was able to calm some of our new parent fears and give some helpful thoughts on breastfeeding.
Overall we're SO glad we were able to find Frances and to have her as a part of our team. We would definitely recommend her to anyone looking to work with a competent, kind, caring, and confident doula.
