I highly recommend Sonya. From the beginning, I wanted to hire a doula. My husband was less certain. Post-birth, we both agree hiring Sonya was a great decision! Here's why we loved Sonya:

  • It was my first childbirth experience and I had so many questions. I read a lot of books/websites but typically found the authors had strong opinions about birth preferences. Sonya presented options and facts in a very unbiased manner. Feeling educated about all the options allowed my husband and I to create a birth plan confidently.
  • We choose to deliver our daughter at the Lois Hole Hospital. While interviewing other doulas, there was a strong preference for midwives and/or home births. Sonya supported our choice of a hospital and helped us navigate a more "medical" approach to childbirth.
  • My birth plan fell apart during labour. I loved having Sonya in the room to educate on my options as my labour progressed. Post-birth, we believe we made the right decisions in the moment. We're confident and content with the birth of our daughter. We felt in control every step of the way.
  • As the doctors/nurses changed shifts three times during my labour, Sonya was our constant advocate. She was at home with us for three hours and at the hospital with us for over 26 hours.
  • Sonya suggested many labouring positions that provided comfort and progressed labour.
  • Sonya recorded our entire birth story and took the most beautiful photos during delivery.
  • Postpartum, Sonya was so helpful with breastfeeding and support for me.

Sonya clearly loves her work as a doula. She's knowledgeable and progressive. As a doula, she's calm, caring and professional.

Sonya - from the bottom of hearts, thank you!

my wonderful midwife Barbara Scriver recommended Sonya to me. I had just moved to Edmonton when I was already six months pregnant. I felt fortunate to have found a midwife but I still felt overwhelmed at the thought of giving birth at home to my second child. I had a preschooler at home facing adjustment issues and my partner and I were in a new city without close friends or family to count on. I didn't have familiar coordinates and felt pretty shaky in terms of confidence. That is not something you want when you're going into a home birth situation! In this context, I could not have asked for someone more experienced, skilled, kind and, above all, generous than Sonya. She helped me gain confidence in myself and in the birthing process in big and small ways. Her classes are informative and reminded me of the essentials. she answered questions carefully and keeping in mind my needs. She lent books, recommended resources helped me think through options for d-day for my preschooler considering out lack of social network here. It was all really helpful. And on the day I started labouring she helped affirn my sanity in the face of totally confusing early labour signs. She also saw me through every stage of labour with patience and absolute attention. From setting up the pool to preparing the postpartum room from laundry to keeping me hydrated Sonya was ubiquitous and relentlessly helpful. Postpartum, I can say that she helped me with the uphill nursing battles with calm wisdom, affirming me every step of the way, and she recommended the placenta encapsulation which proved key. in each stage I felt that she went beyond what is expected of a doula and I can only wish someone like her could be there for most mothers in the birthing process. thank you Sonya!

I hired Sonya for the birth of my second child. Having her support made a world of difference. Her support during my pregnant was invaluable and her presence during labour was so reassuring. She is calm and caring and knows exactly what or what not to do. Sonya is extremely knowledgeable about birth and babies and I would absolutely recommend her.

Sonya was a great help to me and my husband after our baby girl Nora was born. Not having any family here in Edmonton left us on our own as first time parents. My c section recovery made it harder on top of figuring out how to be a new mother. Sonya was there for us with her years of experience with her gentle touch. She helped us with everything from breast feeding to bottles. And treated our baby with great care and compassion.

It was easy to develope a comfortable relationship with Sonya, she was like a mom and an old friend.

My boyfriend and I were very lucky to have met Sonya, who came very highly recommended to us. As first time parents, Sonya made the process as stress free as possible, providing us with a constant source of information on what to expect and what would happen during the whole process, as well as ensuring that we understood the pros and cons of every procedure that was being done. Her expertise allowed us to feel comfortable and helped us feel better prepared when the time came for us to deliver. With my boyfriend being away with work ,she always took the time to check in and see how we were both doing. She helped us write and go through our birth plan to ensure that our needs were taken care of and that we got the birth experience we wanted. Having Sonya with us before and during the birth of our baby girl made this journey even more memorable for us. I could imagine  doing this without Sonya's professional training and support and we would like to thank her so very much for all her help in welcoming our precious new addition.

Sonya is very knowledgeable and has many years of experience as a doula. She is unbiased and really gets to know your individual needs and desires for your birth. Having her apart of my birth team really increased my confidence that I would have the birth I wanted. I particularly like that the full circle birth collective offers many books and videos that you can borrow. I also like that they offer many different classes on various topics like infant first aid and infant massage. The fact that she offers endless support for the first 6 weeks post-pardom is also invaluable. During my labor most helpful things Sonya did were 1) keeping me drinking water, 2) showing my hubby things he could do to make me more comfortable, 3) taking pictures & videos (I didn't care about this initially but I value these pictures so much!), 4) when our son didn't latch at the birthing centre, Sonya came home with us to make sure he would latch, and 5) making sure we were comfortable at home and had everything we needed. We highly recommend her! :)

Sonya was an excellent support to my wife and I throughout the pregnancy and especially during labour. She was knowledgeable and a calming presence that we relied on to keep us sane and informed. We couldn't imagine what it would have been like to do this without her and are grateful for everything she did for us.

When I became pregnant, I really desired an all natural, unmedicated birth. When I began to share the thought with people around me, I found myself to be a part of a small minority, without support and feeling alone. My husband supported me fully but there came a point when we starting to ask ourselves, " Is a natural childbirth even something realistic?" When I talked to Sonya, she set my mind at ease and helped me to feel confident in my choice to give birth naturally. She sent me some really informative research articles while pregnant on every topic that I had questions about. I started educating myself in all areas of birth through her resources and I found any fears I had simply slipping away. I can honestly say that I had the most enjoyable, positive and blessed pregnancy with Sonya at my side. If ever I felt my spirit break, Sonya would lift it up by reminding me that God was in control, we were designed to give birth and that I was capable and strong. As a Christian, I wanted God to be at the centre of my birth story. Sonya came to my house and read scripture to me in between my contractions. I progressed FAST and I was in active labour before we got into the vehicle to head to the hospital. I was already 8cm dilated when we arrived. My husband was coming from out of town but Sonya helped keep me relaxed and strong.I had been instructed to push on an undilated cervix for almost an hour. I was then told to stop and return to breathing through contractions. This was the point in which Sonya helped me most. My spirit was broken. I layed on her lap while she breathed in my ear so I could mimic her breath. With God's strength, and Sonya's encouragement my daughter, Violet Faith, came into the world after around 12 hrs of labour (3 hours of pushing). Thanks to Sonya, i had a peaceful pregnancy and beautiful all natural birth that I so longed for. I can't wait to become pregnant again, God-willing, and have a doula at my side for the process.

My midwife recommended I find a doula when I was approximately 30 weeks pregnant. I have had trouble with anxiety in the past, and do not have any family that live in this province to support me. I am so thankful to have found Sonya. She put me at ease from our first encounter, and I knew right away I wanted her on my birth team. Nothing was ever too much trouble for Sonya. With unlimited pre- and post-natal support I have never felt alone or unable to cope. She was invaluable through early labor, it was fast but very intense 6.5 hours, during which she coached me when I had asked her to and provided encouraging support and energy  when I needed it. My hubby and I specifically wanted Sonya to help me through early labor so he wouldnt have to. He slept as much as he could til near the end. I couldnt have done it without her guidance. Luckily she was quick to react when my irregularly timed contractions brought me unexpectedly to pushing, kept me relatively calm until our midwife arrived. Once my midwife was there they worked quickly as a team to help me move into a  different room for the birth, she only managed to arrive for the last part of the labour by which time I was in "labor land", unable to really talk, move or think for myself. I could only imagine what state me and my hubby would have been in without doula there to direct us, keep in contact with the midwife, keep me positive until help arrived. My midwife was so impressed with the level of care Sonya provided she couldnt stop talking about it afterwards.  Sonya was the last to leave after making sure my hubby and I were fed, clean and watered. She even did all our birth laundry for us and stayed with me while me hubby left to take the doggie to daycare. Since then we have called or texted about any concerns or questions I have had, of which there have been many. We feel that Sonya really went above and beyond our expectations.

We met Sonya pretty far into our pregnancy. Our due date was looming over us and my husband and I felt as if we still had many unanswered questions. So, after speaking with our close friends who had already hired Sonya as their doula, we decided to meet with her. Within minutes, we knew that we had made the right choice. Sonya instantly put our minds at ease.

We knew that we wanted Sonya to be part of the rest of our prenancy, and our delivery as well as aftercare process. She was able to provide us with information on any questions that we brought to her. The best part of this was that we were able to formulate our own opinions with the information that we were given. There was never any pressure to make one choice over the other, Sonya was simply there to help us make educated decisions. She made herself available at all hours and we knew that we could come to her with any quesitons or concerns without feeling silly or judged.

For me, it was peace of mind for myself as well as my husband. He was obviously worried about the process and how he could help me with labour and delivery. Having Sonya there allowed my husband to have the correct tools to be a part of the whole experience while keeping a clear head and supporting me in every way possible. Sonya's presence had a calming effect on everyone in the room and we know it would not have been the same without her.

The support after our baby arrived was so amazing! She stayed with us after delivery to make sure that we were able to breastfeed comfortably. And the days and weeks after she made contact with us often and insured that we were settling into our new roles with ease and comfort.

We look forward to having Sonya in our lives, as a friend as well as a doula for the birth of any children we may have in the future!

As my son just turned one, I've found myself, thinking back with fondness to the day of his birth. Not just to the end result, but to the process. This was a reaction I never expected to have and is thanks, in large part, to Sonya. Though nothing went according to our plan, Sonya helped us to feel calm and really experience the moments leading up to our sons birth. From answering my 900 questions and to rubbing my back through my 28 hour labor to helping us figure out our car seat and bringing me lactation cookies and holding my hand when we were having trouble getting nursing started. I felt as though she was always in our corner while still letting my husband and I experience these moments in a way that never felt obtrusive. I will never forget sitting in our Jeep, ready to take our son home from the hospital. Sonya had just helped us load up the car and was off with a promise to call and check on us soon. My husband, who had been hesitant about the added expense at a time when we had so many new financial obligations,  turned and said "That was the best money we ever spent". I couldn't agree more.

It is difficult to even start to describe how vital Sonya was as part of my birth team. She has a vast amount of knowledge and information that she doesnt hesitate to share. On the extremely rare occassion that the answer isnt well known she would find me several documents providing me with the information needed. She is so caring and genuine. She was available not just to answer questions but often just to talk me through some of the emotions that pregnancy can bring. My husband felt much calming after listening to Sonyas suggestions during her labor prep appointment and we both felt very prepared... or at least as prepared as you can be. Sonya made herself available for us at our external ceohalic version (turning breech baby) which we both felt went above and beyond. She is certified in placenta encapsulation as well which was also a huge bonus for us. Between her huge heart, caring nature and knowledge I do not hesitate to recommend her to anyone looking for doula support. The friends that have also had the pleasure of having Sonya be part of their team all feel the same way. We all love her. I am so grateful to have met her and wouldnt hesitate to have her at my next birth.
