We hired Lina for the birth of our second child in November, 2016. We planned to have a birth center birth and I texted Lina when I began feeling the first labor contractions in the evening. My husband and I went to sleep hoping to rest as much as possible before the birth and planned to have Lina come when things picked up. Unfortunately we didn't get to use Lina for birth because my daughter decided to come so quickly she was born at home! Lina met us at the hospital in the middle of the night to check on us and see how we were all doing. We arranged a postpartum visit and Lina came over and made freezer meals for the family and kept me company, which was a great help. I'm sure Lina would have been a fantastic labor support for my husband and myself and she was also great as a postpartum doula.
Lina is a fantastic doula! I had dragged my feet when deciding on whether or not to get a doula. My husband is incredibly supportive and calm under pressure, so I didn't think we would need one. However, the midwives we were with recommended using a doula. This was our third birth and I really wanted it to be a natural one in a hospital. Our first birth had been a c-section with twins, our second a VBAC with a last minute epidural. Lina helped this fourth birth to be smooth and quick and completely natural. She was extremely flexible and moved with our needs, not ever putting herself or her prefrences before ours, which was my number one priority. I just wanted someone to help us through the process, however it happened, and she did exactly that. You should definitely contact Lina if you want a smoother birth and the best helpmate who will work with you and your families unique needs.
I cannot say enough good things about Lina! Upon meeting her, I knew right away that she was the doula for me. She was so easy to talk to and made me feel so comfortable. As a first time mom, I felt like I had the craziest questions and she helped me the entire way. She was a great resource throughout my pregnancy, labor and delivery. From the start of my labor at 37 weeks & 5 days, she was there. I remember heading to the hospital, in the early stages of labor and texting her for advice. She had a way of putting a nervous first time mom at ease, encouraging me to stick to my plan. After we returned home due to stalled labor, Lina came over the next day to help move things along...I believe it was 6 hours after she left that my water broke! I couldn’t believe it! An hour after that, we were headed to the hospital with contractions 5 minutes apart & a minute long. In the delivery room, Lina was absolutely amazing! She provided encouragement exactly when I needed it! When I “lost it” in a moment, she jumped right in and helped bring me back LOL. When the doctor arrived & suggested something outside of my birth plan, she looked at me and asked if I was sure I was ok with this. She has a way of providing what you need, when you need it & letting you be when you don’t. She truly helped me feel empowered and in control of my own birth. I really cannot say enough good things about her, Lina was absolutely amazing! There is no way I could have done a natural birth without her. The minute we are ready for a 2nd Baby, she’s the first call we will make!
Lina was our doula for our son's birth in September 2016. Leading up to birth, she was professional and friendly, quick to respond to texts or emails and provided a lot of helpful, evidence based information as we prepared for his arrival. She helped us with our birth plan and encouraged and supported our decisions. I don't think I would have been able to naturally manage my pain without Lina's constant support and encouragement during labor. Lina was a wonderful coach for both me and my husband. I was worried when I labored I would only want my husband around, but Lina could sense when some privacy was needed and allowed us the space I needed to labor, while coaching my husband how best to support me. I really appreciated that! She helped me to successfully birth a big 8+ lb baby and have my desired intervention free birth. Lina also provided breastfeeding support immediately after birth which was so important to us. She folllowed up in the days after delivery to make sure we were doing well and answered my questions regarding breastfeeding which allowed us to form a successful breastfeeding relationship which is still ongoing, some 21+ months later. We could not have asked for better support during our son's birth and am so thankful for Lina!! I would recommend her services to all expecting families! <3
I am a fellow doula in Bowie, MD and have had the pleasure of getting to know Lina on a personal and professional level. She has a passion for birth and supporting women, including postpartum through her postpartum doula work and breastfeeding counseling. Any time I have needed to talk, she has been there. She's caring, compassionate, intelligent, friendly, kind, and unbelievably supportive.
Where do I begin?! I am so glad I found Lina before my delivery. Lina made me feel comfortable and excited about labor and postpartum. She was kind and interested in all of my questions and concerns. She was a wealth of knowledge and shared a great deal of information with me during our first meeting. I knew I wanted to work with Lina postpartum and am very glad I did. Lina kept up with me via text/email/calls leading up to and after the birth. She was always there for questions and sincerely cared about how I was feeling. Lina was the one to tell me the "cramps" I was feeling at 41 weeks and 6 days were actually contractions!
Following my delivery, Lina answeredy questions about recovery and baby care. She helped with everything from holding the baby to making me a cup of tea. She truly made me feel cared for and she would not allow me to over extend myself. She made me feel okay about taking it easy and just relaxing. It was exactly what I needed. She taught me how to use a baby carrier and because of that lesson I now enjoy baby wearing often!
i can't thank Lina enough for her help and kindness. I would recommend her services to anyone seeking a doula/postpartum doula.
I strongly recommend Lina Martin to any expecting parents seeking a doula.
I began looking for a doula last year soon at 8 weeks pregnancy, but didn't find Lina until week 36 gestation. I knew I wanted to deliver in a hospital, but I wanted to do so with as few medical interventions as reasonably possible. While a natural birth was my strong preference, I wanted to be open because things often do not go according to our plans. I also needed someone who could help my birth team (which consisted of my husband and a friend who was a bridemaids in my wedding) assist me.
Lina was awesome:
* empathetic, calm, experienced, utterly reliable.
* Lina edited my birth plan to make it easy for the hospital staff to follow and include instructions I wanted in case of an emergency cesarean (which I didn't even think to include) and listed saving placenta and first diapers for a study I was in at Children's Hospital LA.
* Lina sent me the perfect medical journal article about the huge moment during delivery which a woman transitions from maiden to mother. I had more anxiety than I liked to admit about becoming a mother.
* Lina worked with me twenty-two of my twenty-seven hour labor plus stayed to help with the first latch breastfeeding, monitoring my delivery of the placenta (I wanted to deliver my placenta naturally, but was too exhausted at that point to care), and stayed engaged with me at the moment of my daughter's birth when, rightfully so, my husband's attention went to our daughter. She helped my team assist me at every possible moment and reminded me to stay lower with my breath and helped them take breaks.
* Lina answered every question I had about infant care and breastfeeding postpartum.
Lina was an integral part of the birth team who gave me world-class care before, during, and after labor. I had the wonderful, natural childbirth I wanted.
I will forever be greatful to Lina for helping me after my third daughter was born. Her knowledge of establishing a milk supply, encouragement for continuing to pump, and overall support during a very emotional 3 week NICU stay will always be appreciated. Many times during those weeks, I wanted to give up on nursing due to exhaustion from pumping, NICU visits and hospital policies making it difficult for me to breastfeed my child, but in the end, my ability to breastfeed brought my daughter home. She refused to take milk from a bottle so could not be released. With Lina's encouragement, I fought "policy," convinced the doctors to let me nurse my child and watched my baby happily drank away at my breast. We, thankfully, will never know how much longer she would have had to stay if bottling had been her only option.
Lina joined my husband and I on the voyage that brought our first born beautiful daughter into this world. My first experience with Lina was lovely. She was easy to talk to and made me feel comfortable. I had a lot of questions and to me Lina was an archive of information. She had facts from pregnancy, to delivery, to breastfeeding. She had information that was specific to my needs. For example, breastfeeding support for mommies who plan on going back to work. Lina also had a network of resources and was eager to assist me in any way she could. As my doula, Lina would call to check up on me, visited with me, and was always around when I had questions. Since I was having a hospital birth, she helped write a birth plan, and gave me ideas on questions to ask my OB. Since this was my first pregnancy, and my husband was serving in Afghanistan Lina was the only person I had to lean on. I was anxious, nervous, and excited for labor. I wanted to have a natural drug free labor and birth but had my normal hesitations and fears. Lina soothed my nerves by explaining the benefits of natural labor, and showing me techniques that would help me with every contraction. However, she was supportive with any way I chose to labor. She never once pressured me to labor one way over another. She reminded me that this was my birth and my baby. The day my daughter chose to exit her private penthouse, Lina was our support. As my husband drove me the 30min drive to the hospital, I sat in the passenger seat pushing out my daughter. My husband insisted Lina stay on the phone with him. He said she made him feel "safe". Once arriving at the hospital (where Lina met us) my daughter was born 15min later. Lina helped me through those last pushes and fed me water that I desperately needed. After my birth Lina helped me countless times with breastfeeding. Lina was a excellent doula and a lifelong friend.
Bottom line: Lina's gentle demeanor, quiet professionalism, loving compassion, and ability to assess problems quickly to offer solutions makes for an easy choice in both doula and lactation consultant. She is a woman of integrity that shows dignity to all woman, regardless of others' beliefs.
I am the mother of 6 children and I have nursed all of them. My 6th child had nursing issues. Along with making appt's w/ the LC at the hosp where my child was born and two Peds, I started to discuss with Lina my problems. The problem I ran across with the entire med field was the assumption that b/c this was my 6th child, and I had nursed all previous children, I shouldn't have problems. I was summarily dismissed by all of them.
Lina didn't dismiss me. She listened to not only my frustration with the med establishment, but my frustration at not being able to figure out why my child was nursing poorly. I was not only post-partum but being a military spouse, I was also in the middle of a military move while my husband was gone, so my emotional state was starting to deteriorate. Lina offered nothing but compassion and a strong willingness to help me figure out what was going on in order to help my child (and me).
Within a week of talking with Lina, taking her advice to block nurse, having an in home visit for observations, she was able to offer insights and information that led to figuring out that my child had a lateral tongue tie and upper lip tie, all which impacted my child's ability to form a proper latch for effective nursing. 19 months later, my child is *STILL* nursing thanks to Lina's advice and willingness to help me figure out what was wrong.
The personalized attention Lina offered and the comfort in which she made me feel after having been dismissed by others is what gives me complete confidence in recommending Lina's services.
