Michelle is someone who I will treasure forever. As a single mom by choice, having her as my doula was crucial and she provided thoughtful support, resources, and love from the time I was about 6 months pregnant all the way through to my birth (and beyond). She is genuine, respectful, experienced, and brings such a great energy/demeanor into every situation. I can't say enough wonderful things about her and hope others have the chance to get to know her during such a special time in their lives!
The decision to hire Michelle Cohen as our birth doula was one of the best choices my husband and I made leading up to the birth of our daughter. Michelle’s knowledge on birth, but also prenatal and postpartum support, is unparalleled and she was an invaluable resource to us leading up to, during and after the birth of our baby. We felt so much more at ease and confident knowing we could ask her anything and she was easy to talk to and reach both in-person and via phone, messaging and email. Michelle is such a calming and reassuring presence and always made time to talk with us and answer questions – no matter how big or small. We were so grateful to have her as a part of this experience as we became first time parents and would recommend her to all others – new and second/third-time parents alike!
Hiring Michelle Cohen as a birth doula was easily one of the best choices my wife and I made when preparing for the birth of our son.
As a father-to-be, my biggest fear when hiring any doula was that she would take away from the intimacy of the childbirth experience. We were preparing for childbirth through books and classes, and so I imagined that we could have a positive labor experience by simply working together, and would only need the midwife and delivery nurses for support. But at the urging of our midwife, we decided to hire a doula anyway. We chose Michelle because she seemed to be a good personality fit for us, and we are SO lucky we made that decision.
In the months before birth, Michelle provided us with excellent support. During our two in-person meetings, she thoughtfully answered all of our questions and provided non-judgmental advice. In between meetings, she recommended specific readings to help focus our education, and continued to answer our questions over email.
During childbirth, Michelle was an invaluable support system for both of us. She helped us to understand what was normal, where we were in the childbirth process, how to labor at home, and when we needed to go to the hospital. She skillfully guided my wife through comfort measures and labor techniques. Rather making me feel replaced, she helped me to figure out how I could best support my wife at all times. We felt incredibly grateful to have Michelle by our side during the entire process.
Ever since childbirth, Michelle has continued to support us above and beyond what was required. She has become a trusted advisor and a friend. She is kind, experienced, dedicated, thoughtful, and knowledgeable. We recommend her without reservation, and sincerely hope she is available for our next birth!
I had an incredible and natural birth experience, thank in large part to Michelle's guidance. I loved taking her prenatal yoga class for the months leading up to the birth. This allowed me to get to know her better, and also helped get my body and mind in shape for labor! Even without the yoga classes, I would highly recommend Michelle as a doula and I felt we could relate to one another easily. She communicates well, which made planning for the birth a smooth process. She also worked well with my husband, helping him get more comfortable during our "prep" sessions, and at the actual birth. We took her birth workshop called Labor with Love, which was extremelly helpful for both us of.
When early labor started, I had so much peace of mind knowing Michelle could be at my home if I needed her, or over the phone helping me decide when I was ready to go to the hospital. When we arrived at the hospital, she was calm and collected, knew so many of the nurses and made my transition from home to delivery room so much easier. During labor, she gave my husband and I the right amount of space, allowing us to really connect. She knew the right moments to come in, rub my back, help coach my breathing, calm me down, and give my husband a break. On top of that, she took the most beautiful photos of the birth in the most discreet way.
I can't say enough wonderful things about Michelle. If and when I have another baby, I hope to work with her again.
Michele Cohen exceeded my expectations as a doula by establishing a personal relationship with me and my spouse as well as offering prenatal meetup sessions-especially the Labor with Love workshop, yoga practice, and pro-active labor/deliver support. Along the way, Michele offered expertise and resources that empowered me to make the right decisions for me and my family. Michele's intuition mixed with experience and know-how really shined through during the birth of our daughter. She knew just the right way to ease my pain, kept me focused, and provided suggested positions to effeciently progress labor, as well as hospital experience/contacts to locate a delivery room (busy day at the hospital). She has a multitude of tools in her toolkit and I benefited from each one. Finally, I will cherish the photos Michele took to document our day.
If I could title this review it would be "You NEED Michelle Cohen to be your Doula." Michelle is awesome and I figure I would save you the trouble of reading my whole review.
I took prenatal yoga with Michelle when I was pregnant with my first son (4 years ago). I loved Michelle's classes and really connected with her style of teaching. I didn't end up using a doula with my first son, naively beliving that I could handle everything on my own and that a doula would just be an extra expense. I ended up with a C-section. When I got pregnant with my second son I knew I wanted to try for a VBAC and I knew, to have the best chance of having a successful VBAC I would need a Doula. Michelle was the first person that came to mind and lucky for me she was available. Michelle was great at our prenatal appointments (there were 3). She was knowledgeable and offered me a wealth of resources (chiropractor, accupuncturists, lending library) that really helped prepare me for a successful labor. It was during labor, though, where I was really blown away by Michelle's talent as a doula. I had prodromal labor (false labor) and early labor that lasted 3 days. Michelle was always easy to reach and helped take me through the discomfort of prolonged labor and the frustration of being over a week past due. When labor finally started to pick up Michelle seemed to anticipate my every need. She came to my house, massaged my belly and used pressure to help lessen the pain of contractions. She also gave great suggestions on how to keep labor progressing and took the pressure off me when it came to timing contractions. Michelle helped me stay calm and gave me confidence in knowing when to call my midwives and when to go to the hospital (almost an hour away). During transition she knew just what to say to keep me going. After only 4 hours in the hospital and 2 pushes I had a successful drug-free VBAC and I am so grateful to Michelle for helping to make it happen.
As a first-time mom, my priorities were two-fold: first, have a fair trial of labor in hopes of a vaginal delivery and, second, have an unmedicated birth. For these reasons, my husband and I hired Michelle as our doula. At our first meeting, we enjoyed how personable Michelle was and felt immediately comfortable with her. My favorite thing about working with Michelle is the many opportunities available to build a relationship with her. I attended her pre-natal yoga classes, which were held on Sunday afternoons. My husband and I also attended her Labor with Love workshop, which provided childbirth education. Regularly seeing Michelle deepened my comfort with her in preparation for labor.
My labor was very long due to my water breaking without contractions starting spontaneously. After being induced, once my contractions really picked up I told my husband to call Michelle- she arrived at the hospital 20 minutes later. I labored intensely for 5-6 hours. Michelle and my husband squeezed my hips and offered counter pressure the entire time. My husband could not have done all of that work by himself. In fact, his arms were shot after the first 20 minutes of heavy contractions where he was by himself. When I finally hit a wall with the pain level, Michelle was able to make many suggestions for pain relief. Ultimately, I did end up getting an epidural.
My fondest memory of labor was the pushing phase. Michelle's voice was so helpful. She was encouraging. She told me when my pushes were productive and "really good." This really motivated me. It was the fastest 1hr and 20 mins of my life thanks to her coaching. She also took pictures of the delivery and post-delivery process. All of the pictures were sent in color and b&w copies within a week of delivery.
My husband and I are so glad we worked with Michelle. We hold her in the highest regard and hope we can work with her again in the future.
My husband and I had the pleasure of working with Michelle as our doula and postpartum doula. She is the ultimate nurturer and has a gentle spirit that comforted and guided us through every step of the way. She is steeped in knowledge about pregnancy, labor, breastfeeding, and baby care and was able to answer all of our questions and deliver resources of information when needed. Her passion for her work is palpable and I only wish every mom was lucky enough to have her by her side during such an important time in her life. My husband sums it up best, "if we're lucky enough to have another baby, Michelle will be our first call."
My husband and I had an incredibly positive experience with Michelle Cohen and cannot recommend her enough. We were able to meet with her a few times before the birth, and she was a tremendous resource for thinking through our birth plan, practicing techniques for pain management, and more. During the labor and birth, I don't know what we would have done without her. She met us at the hospital because my labor progressed faster than I expected. She was able to usher me to where I needed to go while my husband signed us in. Once in the hospital, she communicated my wishes to the hospital staff. Also, she coached my husband through ways he could support me and was there to encourage and support me as well (especially when my husband needed a break to use the restroom). She also thankfully brought an amazing camera and captured photos during and after the birth that alone were worth the fee. She was also gracious enough to run get us food after the baby was born since it was midnight and there was nothing palatable that was available in the hospital. I've already said it, but we cannot recommend Michelle enough.
I met Michelle through a prenatal yoga class and immediately noticed her warm, kind and caring personality. I kept coming back to her classes and found out in the process that she was also a doula. My gut was telling me that she would be the right person for the job – and it was beyond right.
I was very close to my 42 week mark and was nervous about being induced. Michelle guided me through all of the possibilities and reassured me to trust the process, our baby and my body. Although I had many moments of false labor and ‘crying wolf’ Michelle was able to guide me through them and know when is the exact time to intervene or let me rest. When I finally got to the hospital she made sure to be in touch with my husband and knew when would be the right time to join us.
At the hospital, Michelle was there, by my side, ALL the time. Through 17 hours of labor and 47 hours of early labor, she kept cheering, sharing from her wisdom, comforting and caring. She made sure that I received information to make decisions that were right for us, and she was instrumental when I reached a wall and thought I couldn’t continue anymore. She made my husband and I work as a team and knew when to tell him to go save up his energy as well. She used all sorts of techniques to help me relieve the labor paints, including guiding me through each contraction, using water, music, aromatherapy, kind bars, yoga positions, ice, thinking about dolphins - you name it…
I really cannot say enough about how amazing she was. The energy, love, care, experience and wisdom that she brings forth really assures you through the unknown path of what a birth is all about. My husband, myself and our new baby felt loved and supported throughout and after. I would really recommend Michelle as your doula and advocate and am definitely looking forward to working with her again in the future.
Michelle was truly an amazing doula from start to finish! I immediately felt at ease with her after our consultation. The two sessions with her and my husband were so helpful, reassuring and informative.
The night I went into labor (was the middle of the night of course!), Michelle provided continuous support via phone and text until we decided it was time for her to come to our house. My husband hadn't slept and things were progressing. A sense of calm and peace washed over me as soon as she arrived! She knew what I needed without me having to even ask.
Once we got to the hospital, I was already 9cm so there wasn't much time, but Michelle was by my side reassuring me with massage, aromatherapy, and encouraging words. Once our daughter was born, Michelle stuck around for a while to help her latch on. It was so wonderful to have her support through the whole process!
Shortly after the birth, Michelle stopped by our home for the post partum visit which was a lifesaver. We covered so much - she helped set up my breast pump and use it for the first time; she helped me put the baby in one of our carriers for the first time; and provided greatly needed emotional support, which continued after her visit too!
Then we received the amazing photos that she took during the birth! We really love them. She also wrote a really sweet letter to our daughter about the birth which brought me to tears. It will be so amazing for her to read when she is older.
My my husband says "Having Michelle as a partner through my wife's pregnancy and labor allowed me to be more fully present to the power of the experience. What we paid to hire Michelle was some of the best money I've ever spent."
I would highly recommend Michelle as a birth doula to anyone. I can't imagine going through this experience without her wisdom, encouragement, energy, and presence!
I met Michelle in her prenatal yoga class, and I was immediately drawn to her warmth, kindness, and bubbly personality. I was terrified about taking a yoga class, but Michelle's understanding of and compassion for the human body made me instantly at ease. For all these reasons, I asked her to be my doula.
I am happy to report that Michelle is just as phenomenal and loving as a doula as I had hoped. She met with my partner and I three times before the birth: the first was a meet and greet and the last two were focused on physical, mental, and emotional preparation. She has a way of putting people immediately at ease. Even my husband, who tends to be skeptical of all things yoga, enjoyed working with Michelle from the moment we met her.
Michelle is always amazing, but she really shined at the birth. She texted and returned calls in the middle of the night, talked me through my incredibly long early labor, and helped jump start my labor right when she arrived. She and my husband were a team from the minute she got to my house. She walked me around the block, pushing my hips as contractions to came. When we arrived to the hospital, she stayed by my side, ensuring that my music was playing, that the bathroom actually felt like a spa, and that my husband had eaten. My labor was incredibly long, including over four hours of pushing sans epidural. Michelle coached me through the pain and exhaustion, offering words of support, new positions, and breathing guidance the whole way. After the birth, she delivered a beautifully written letter to my daughter and photos of the birth, and she still provides support and guidance as I need it. After my birth, we all consider Michelle as part of our family.
My birth was not what I envisioned, but it was still the perfect birth largely because of Michelle. She has no agenda beyond ensuring that the women she works with are loved, supported, and heard throughout their births.
I am thrilled to recommend Michelle Cohen to those seeking a warm, professional, compassionate birth doula. From the beginning, Michelle went above and beyond to get to know myself and my husband and was respectful of all of my preferences and visions regarding my upcoming birth. She spent much time talking and planning with us in order to accomodate us with exactly what we needed when labor began. During labor, Michelle brought calm to the room and used massage with massage oils, aromatherapy, music, vocal toning and words of encouragement to help me labor. She also acted as an advocate, talking through different decisions and possible consequences.
Having Michelle by my side during my daughter's birth was truly a gift. Her spirit and experience were empowering and her strength and calm made me feel more prepared to give birth. Michelle is a true star and we couldn't imagine a better doula. Anyone would be lucky to have her support during her birth.
Michelle was amazing throughout my birth experience. After I took a "Natural Birth" class, I was a bit terrified, but then Michelle came over for our first prenatal meeting and I immediately felt better - calm - knowing that she would be there to guide us through it. She has an amazing energy - both vibrant and soothing at the same time. We were able to stay at home during my labor for four hours longer because of her presence...and my husband got in an hour long nap! At the hospital she helped make the mood special and really made my husband feel useful. More than anything, I think her presence allowed him to make the most of our birth experience. She also flagged for the midwife that things were moving faster than expected. That was good, since otherwise the midwife might have missed the catch! She was also extremely helpful with some breastfeeding pointers at her post-partum visit. And I love the letter that she wrote to my son about his birth. All in all, as my husband says, "worth every penny; best decision we made." If we have another, I do hope to have Michelle join us again!
My wife and I were so fortunate to have Michelle for a doula. She was an amazing resource and a supportive, empowering influence on our birth process before, during, and after. We felt more prepared, confident, and at ease going into labor because of the time we had spent with Michelle. Of course, like many labors, ours began late at night, and Michelle was totally available from the first contraction. When it was time to go to the hospital, she actually beat us there, and she was by our side almost every minute until our baby was born. Over the hours, she brought a deep knowledge of comfort and relaxation techniques and a positive and present spirit. She was also just an energetic second set of hands - we traded off regularly applying comfort measures, providing distraction, entertainment, and encouragement, taking breaks, resting, getting snacks and water (for her and for ourselves.) I'm so thankful for both my wife and I that we had that support and that Michelle was a part of our labor and birth. She is a lovely person and an amazing doula.
Michelle was a wonderful doula!
I was lucky enough to also be a student in her yoga class as well, which I would really recommend - that way you see her regularly beforehand and she'll know how your body responds to various positions, etc., and what works for you.
Michelle's sessions before labor were very helpful, and we both enjoyed getting to know her. She was always available to answer questions, and helped us when we had a little breech baby who needed to get into position! Ultimately, she was positioned perfectly.
Michelle was always available when I had questions, and was immediately responsive when I called her Saturday night to let her know I was in labor. Because I was GBS positive, we went to the hospital early and then my labor was long - and Michelle was by our side for 24 hours at the hospital! I don't know what we would have done without her. She was willing to support me and my spouse in any way, from all the expected supports like massage, using oils, talking me through my down times and helping remind me of my breathing, to all the weird things that come up during labor like feeding me popsicles and constantly wrapping and unwrapping me in blankets as I cycled from hot to cold! I think we could've asked her to do almost anything and she would've helped. She was super supportive and accomodating and we both loved working with her.
Michelle also took great photos for us, which, while some were hard to look back on, really helped me to understand the process we went through afterwards (I was surprised how much labor seems like a blur later!) She also wrote us a lovely birth letter for our daughter.
I would recommend Michelle unreservedly to Moms looking for a supportive doula who will be right by your side no matter what challenges you endure during labor (or for your perfectly uncomplicated delivery)!
Michelle is amazing. Her strength and encouragement got me through 10+ hours of hard labor and 6+ hours of pushing. Michelle was present but let my husband be the primary care giver - exactly like we had asked. She gently encouraged me to get into more comfortable and productive positions. She was always there with a cold compress, sip of water, or snack when I needed one.
Michelle brings props with her to help make the experience more comfortable. I never would have thought to bring white Christmas lights to make the atmosphere more soothing. She also has an array of essential oils to use as aromatherapy and massage.
I had two prenatal and one postnatal visits with Michelle. It was like having a conversations with a very wise, experienced best friend or sister. She is the sweetest and most caring person. She was also always available by phone or email to answer any of my questions.
In the beginning my husband and I debated about whether we could afford a doula. Now even my (penny pinching) husband says we couldn't afford not to have Michelle with us. I hope Michelle will be present at all of my future births.
Michelle was a fantastic fit for us as a doula. Throughout the pregnancy she provided us not only with information about pregnancy and labor, but also much-needed emotional support. She helped immensely in navigating the complications presented to us during pregnancy and labor/delivery. Michelle's experience, warmth and positive attitude make her a joy to work with.
Michelle is an amazing doula! She was super supportive of our birth plan, attentive to our concerns and fears, and such a loving, calming presence. She supported me directly but also supported my husband in supporting my labor. We both felt immediately comfortable with her. She is knowledgeable, friendly, caring and peaceful. She knows when to bring humor and when to be serious, when to give verbal support and when to give physical support. My birth could not have gone better and I owe that in large part to Michelle whose techniques and presence were invaluable. As a bonus, she also took phenomenal photographs of the event which I will treasure forever and sent a letter to our baby documenting her birth story. Finally, she was a great help after the birth with breastfeeding and with general questions. I could not recommend her more highly!!!
I knew Michelle before she was my doula, and my birth experience only reinforced how kind and insightful Michelle is. She was thoughtful about our prenatal sessions, asking which topics we wanted to know more about and using what she learned to ask follow-up questions and make suggestions. Michelle usually had answers for all my random questions and suggestions for dealing with the aches, pains, and surprises of pregnancy and the postpartum period as well as labor itself; she also draws on a large network of providers and research to delve deeper as needed. In hindsight, I found her discussion of what to expect postpartum to be especially useful. (We had already taken a birthing class, so we didn't need much from Michelle in that regard.) Michelle helped us develop our birth plan and was readily available in the weeks leading up to my due date. Her work as a yoga teacher adds to her range of capabilities and depth to her toolbox for pregnant women.
When my labor ramped up very quickly, Michelle rolled with the punches and helped us be where we needed to be. She stood between me and the hospital staff a bit, absorbing their questions and activity so I could focus on laboring. She helped my husband support me as well. She even gave me my first hands-on tips for breastfeeding, and we treasure the pictures she took right after delivery. My memories of labor are already blurry, but my memory of Michelle's caring and grounded presence remains clear.
We worked with Michelle early in her doula career, and I am certain that the experience she's gained since then has only deepened her already strong ability to support expecting and new parents, especially mothers.
Michelle was my prenatal yoga teacher and this became part of the reason we wanted her to be our doula. She has an incredibly calming presence and has a great sense of humor at the same time. Michelle met with my wife and I once (although we were scheduled to meet twice, but our daughter came early) before the birth to discuss our hopes for labor and delivery and to share resources. Compared to some other doulas we interviewed, Michelle is still new to this work, but proved to be incredibly knowledgeable and was willing to go the extra mile to make sure everything could go as well as we could plan in advance. Because our daughter came early and a bit unexpectedly, Michelle met us at the hospital when I was already in hard labor (she wanted to come early, but we thought it wasn't quite real yet). She immediately made the room calmer by dimming the lights, using aromatherapy, and jumping in to support both of us. Michelle was amazing during the entire process - offering different laboring options, working with the nurses and midwives (we delivered at GW using the Midwifery Practice there), and best of all, taking gorgeous photographs. Although not a usual doula practice, one of the added bonuses with Michelle is that she gives you an awesome gift afterwards - stunning and incredibly moving photographs of the moments right after birth, and her own personal account of your child's birth story. These are treasures that still bring tears to my eyes. I would recommend Michelle without any reservations and we definitely plan to not only stay in touch with her, but to use her as a doula again.
Michelle was a Godsend. From the cloth diapering and pregnancy yoga classes she taught to the at home visits following the birth of my son, Michelle played an integral part in the entire pre and post-partum process. I felt stronger and empowered by my connection with Michelle and couldn't recommend her more. She is knowledgeable and compassionate. When my original doula fell through in the final weeks of my pregnancy, Michelle stepped in and took control of the situation. I suffered from gestational throbocytopenia (low platelet count), a condition which prevented me from obtaining an epidural and made a natural intervention-free labor my best option. As such my birth plan focused heavily on breathing and relaxation techniques which would allow me to labor through the pain. Michelle familiarized herself with my condition so she could help me in the best way possible. My husband and I were completely at ease with Michelle, and she interacted well with the hospital staff, fostering an atmosphere conducive to a successful natural birth. With Michelle's assistance I gave birth to a healthy baby boy without pain medications before, during or after labor. When I ran into trouble with breastfeeding in the days following my release from the hospital, Michelle came over and patiently helped me with my breast pump to ease my engorgement and assisted in getting my son to latch properly. In a sentence, Michelle Cohen is a wonderful woman, mother, instructor, and doula. You couldn't do any better than to work with her.
My partner and I could not have been happier about our decision to have Michelle support us before, during and after the birth of our son in December 2012. Throughout the entire process, she supported us in an informed, confident, and compassionate way, and our ultimate happiness with the birth experience was absolutely related to Michelle’s role.
A few observations:
First, we appreciated the unbiased and informed way that Michelle helped us to understand the options available to us to help us to craft a birth plan and to be confident about that plan.
Second, when our baby turned breech at 35 weeks, Michelle was the one person on our care team who offered a range of techniques for helping to turn the baby head down and to help us process our feelings and options about the situation.
Third, and most importantly, we appreciated Michelle's hands-on assistance during my labor and birthing. I loved the huge "tool box" she came with, from the massages during every contraction to her joining me in the vocal toning. Also, she provided support when my husband needed to rest or needed to step out to be in contact with family members.
Michelle brought a kindness, compassion, and willingness-to-do-what-it-takes to the whole experience. I had a lot of trepidation going into the process about how I would be able to manage the pain and how I could avoid having a c-section. Everything she did contributed to my success in laboring unmedicated for all but the last 3 hours and to having a vaginal birth.
Our son is now a thriving 5 month old and we feel so fortunate that we can savor both the outcome and the experience of his birth. We love Michelle and recommend her doula services to anyone who will listen.
