This was my second birth with Nicki as my doula. During the night Nicki always responded if I contacted her. That morning, my doctor decided I needed to be at the hospital and baby was showing a couple non reassuring signs. We felt we could use some extra support for anything that may come with this labor. Whether that be physical support, emotional/mental support or both. We knew we would feel a little less anxious. We didn’t feel like we did for my second birth that was a smooth VBAC... the labor pains, the mood of the room, our awareness, it all felt different. I requested Nicki at just the right time and I was so relieved I didn’t wait! She came in just as things were getting much more intense... both my contractions and the situation. She kept me strong to handle contractions unlike any I had with my second. There was obvious fetal distress that the my doctor was trying to assess and see what kind of delivery my baby could handle. Ultimately, I needed to go urgently to the OR. Nicki was at my side as they wheeled me down and said some words of hope but also her words reminded me that either way I’m going to meet my baby! Upon being born, not only did my baby have meconium in her fluid that we discovered earlier in labor, but she also had her cord around her neck 4 times and a true knot! I was very well taken care of, I trust everyone who cared for me and my baby with our life, and it makes all the difference when you feel surrounded by the calmness and strength that Nicki has while going through something so unpredictable. Both for me and my husband! Nicki stayed near in the area in case she was needed, After I woke and during my baby’s stay in the NICU, we touched base and talked about the birth and some other challenges we were experiencing. I will be seeing her for a postpartum visit as well and looking forward to filling in the gaps of my baby’s birth story and reflecting on it.
If I had any ambivalence about connecting with a doula for the birth of our son, it was based on the fact that I knew I wanted to be my wife’s primary support and a totally integral part of the birth process, and I didn’t want to end up including someone in the event only to wind up feeling like I had inadvertently crowded myself out of the picture! After all, I had read “The Birth Partner,” among other books, and together my wife and I had attended labor yoga workshops and hospital birth classes leading up to our due date. So why would we need a doula? I knew from the stories I had heard and read, and by wading through what oftentimes felt like a minefield of conflicting information, that so many unexpected variables can come up, not just during a birth, but leading up to one as well. From the moment we spoke with Nicki it was clear that she held an absolute treasure trove of knowledge, and more so, her wisdom was clearly grounded in her own lived experience, not only from creating her own family, but from the countless births she has attended as a doula. Once labor started, I could not have been more grateful and relieved to have Nicki on our team. Any fears I had of being replaced went straight out the window as I knew that we needed the additional support for what would be an overwhelming night. Nicki’s presence in the room was downright artful, as she empowered me to be the birth partner I had hoped I could be. She gracefully wove herself in and out of the action, never overstepping, but asserting her expertise in just the perfect moments to help keep the process in flow. She was able to choreograph my wife’s movements throughout labor in ways that I never would have known how to do. Most of all, Nicki instilled in me a sense of quiet confidence which allowed me to stay present and strong throughout the whole experience.
Of all the things we did to prepare for the birth of our first child, finding Nicki was the best (and luckiest) thing of all.
My husband and I first spoke with Nicki when I was seven months pregnant, and I was very quickly drawn to her energy and appreciative of her immense practical experience. In fact, without her, we would have ended up at an entirely different hospital, which improved every aspect of the birth process in terms of comfort, attention, privacy, and midwife care. Nicki coached me and helped troubleshoot the totally confusing experience of discovering that my water was leaking days after my due date. One of my favorite things Nicki told us when we met in the weeks preceding the birth was that during labor she would be telling, not asking, me what to do when I was in labor. Her gentle authority made all the difference as I struggled with an erratic and overwhelming experience with Pitocin, while hours ticked by as we rotated between sitting and standing in the shower, walking the hallway, side-lying in bed, and kneeling in the tub. Rounding out the benefits of Nicki's deep practical experience are my memories of her coaching me through each push, and coming immediately to my side to help my baby latch within seconds after he was born.
On a more abstract level, it's hard to quantify or find words to describe Nicki's presence and contributions to the birth on an emotional and energetic level. I had no idea that Nicki would become such a huge part of my birth story. Her calm and quiet confidence was so reassuring, especially for me in the face of the unexpected and less-than-ideal circumstances that kickstarted labor so abruptly. It's clear that doula work isn't just a job for Nicki — it's a calling and a way of life. I'm so thankful that we found her and I hope I get to have another baby with her watchful, knowing presence!
I am so glad we used Nicki as our Doula for the birth of our daughter and would recommend her services to anyone having a baby. We chose to do a natural birth and took the Bradley birthing course in preparation for labor. Even with everything we learned in the Bradley class, I still did not feel fully prepared to have a baby! There’s so much information to understand and important decisions to make leading up to the event. Nicki has an incredible amount of experience in so many different birthing methods so we felt comfortable talking about our different options with her and we were more confident in the decisions we made because of it. She coached us through all the stages of labor...even giving up an entire night of sleep! She has a calming presence that especially helped reassure my husband and I had a sense of confidence and peace during labor that I don’t think I would have had without her by my side. We are forever grateful for her support in the beautiful birth of our baby girl.
Nicki was one of the best decisions my husband and I made when it came to planning for the birth of our daughter. She helped us to feel so well supported before, during, and after delivery. She was available for questions I had throughout my pregnancy and has such a calming presence about her. She helped to reinforce the birth plan and my wishes while in labor so that I could focus on the labor. She also helped with pain relief measures, and gave me the encouragement and advice needed with making my pushing more effective. Having Nicki in the room also brought comfort/peace to my husband, knowing that he was not alone and given tips on how he could support me. If I have any other kids in the future, I am definitely going to be asking for Nicki again.
Nicki was my doula for the birth of my son. I hoped to have a completely natural birth (vaginal birth with no epidural), but as my due date approached and my son was measuring in the >95th percentile for weight and height, I wasn’t sure whether I’d ultimately need or want intervention. 2.5 weeks before my due date, I was experiencing labor pains. Nicki talked me through hours of early labor (including an initial visit to the hospital where I was sent back home), before I ultimately went to the hospital and had my baby with her help. Before I saw Nicki, I was having painful contractions and was desperate for an epidural; however, Nicki’s skill in acupressure really made the contractions bearable (if you can believe it!). I ended up giving birth to a 9.5 pound, 21.5 inch baby (>95th percentile) with no stitches or intervention. I was able to walk around within a day after birth and felt like myself within two weeks. I owe the smooth delivery to Nicki – she is amazing!
Where do I begin?! Nicki was absolutely a life saver for us. When my husband and I met Nicki for the first time, we absolutely fell in love with her. My birthing plan did not go as I had wanted. Long story short, I went into early labor at 31 weeks and my baby was born unexpectedly. My husband called Nicki in the middle of the night to tell her I was going into labor and she immediately came to the hospital! Granted, we had not paid Nicki the entire amount at the time, she immediately came to our rescue and never once asked about money. She was truly a lifesaver. She stayed right with me until a few hours after I delivered my baby. She continued to ask how we were doing afterwards. I don't know what we would have done without her honestly. I'm so glad we were able to meet her and we would definitely recommend hiring Nicki as a doula! You will not be disappointed!!
I had a more challenging first birth than I had expected I would. When I was pregnant with my second, I decided I needed to be more informed, more prepared, and more supported. I felt I needed an advocate who is an expert in childbirth. Enter Nicki. She took the time to get to know me, to understand my wishes and fears, and to help me create a 'plan' for something I know very well you cannot 'plan.' I went into my second labor 100% more prepared than I did with my first. My husband and I both entered the hospital relaxed knowing Nicki would be with us. The process felt like a race I had trained for, as opposed to a starting line I was not prepared to cross. When I got stuck at 9.5cm - exactly what happened with my firstborn - Nicki knew I was going to panic and swooped in and managed to keep me calm (something no one else could have done in that moment). She helped me get into different positions to labor, knowing the baby needed to turn. She used massage techniques that made contractions more bearable. She set small goals for me that I felt I could accomplish, like 'Let's get through 2 more contractions in this position,' or 'Let's wait an hour before you decide you want the epidural' - which was incredibly helpful. Although I didn't have the natural birth I had 'planned,' I got something far more important - the birth experience I wanted and needed. My first was born in a room full of people and was taken from me immediately to be examined by the NICU. This time, he was plopped on my chest the second he was born and stayed that way for two hours. Nicki's support helped me to walk away from the experience feeling empowered - like everything that happened that day was because I wanted it to (something I did not feel after my first was born). Nicki has officially secured herself a spot in the delivery room for any of my future children's births!
Nicki was our doula with the birth of our first child 3 years ago. When I became pregnant with our second child we knew we wanted to have her support again. Nicki has such a calm, encouraging presence during labor. With my first born, I ended up getting an epidural after a 30+ hour labor. With my second, I also had a longer than average labor, but with Nicki’s coaching and support, I was able to experince the natural delivery I wished for! Nicki was not only a huge support for me, but also for my husband. I would highly recommend Nicki as your doula!
Nicki was my doula for the births of both of my sons and I can’t say enough good things about her. From her wealth of knowledge on pregnancy, the birthing process and post care, to her massage services, reliability and availability. Nicki is amazing. She was always there to answer any questions I had (day or night) and she is extremely supportive in whatever your birthing preferences may be. My labor and delivery would have been much different had Nicki not been there. Her advice and professional expertise helped me to have the best birthing experience possible.
Nicki was my doula for my daughter's birth. I am a first time mom, so of course nothing went to plan ;). Nicki made me feel comfortable the entire 30+ hours that I was in labor. She understood my frustrations and came up with coping mechanisms to keep my mind strong, aware, and positive. I went through a pretty scary labor, but I will never forget her never leaving my side and holding my hand throughout the whole ordeal. She even took the most beautiful pictures and videos of my sweet girl shortly after her birth... Something that I treasure all of the time since I was not able to hold her right away. I would recommend Nicki again because she was a very knowledgeable, sweet, soft spoken, gentle soul. I am so grateful that she was my doula!!
My husband and I really happy with the assistance Nicki provided before and during my labor. She offered a different perspective compared to our doctor and was very knowledgeable and professional. Although my baby's birth didn't go quite as I was hoping, I think Nicki helped to minimize interventions that I was hoping to avoid. I think she was definitely a great resource to have in the labor and delivery process!
Nicki is absolutely fabulous! Before my birth Nicki was such a great resource as a first time Mom. She always got back to me same day with any question I had no matter how big or small. I knew I was lucky to have her but it wasn't until my birth I new exactly how lucky I was. I chose an unmedicated birth but was not prepared for the level of pain when my water broke before contractions and then pitocin was needed to get them started. During labor every minute I didn't think I could do it a minute more; Nicki was my rock. She took charge of my birth, supported me through it, and was the reason I achieved a natural birth. Afterwards she visited us as home and I couldn't thank her enough. Anyone would be lucky to have Nicki as their Doula. I won't do birth without her!
I cannot even begin to explain how grateful I am that we hired Nicki to be our doula for the birth of our second baby. After desiring a natural birth with my first baby, and not being able to have one due to lack of proper support, I knew we needed a doula. I lacked confidence the second time around and was fearful that I wouldn’t be able to give birth naturally, after feeling so defeated the first time. We met Nicki when I was twelve weeks pregnant and knew right away that she would be the perfect addition to our birth team. She came to our house for all of our meetings to accommodate our schedule, and toddler’s early bedtime. One of the things I loved about Nicki the most was that she wanted to hear my first-born’s birth story. She truly listened and responded with sincerity. She reassured me that my second birth would be different and I would have the support that I needed. Nicki rebuilt my lost confidence in just one night by believing in me. She was such a great resource throughout my pregnancy. I am proud to say, I gave birth naturally! I got the two things that I wanted –going into labor on my own and a natural birth. I could NOT have done it without Nicki! She said all of the right things at exactly the right time. Just when I thought I couldn’t go on any longer, she whispered in a soothing voice, “Tara, you can do this. This is the part where everyone thinks they cannot go on.” I am tearful as I write this. She was so in tune with me that night. She was meant to be a doula! A piece of her is forever etched in my heart. With her help and encouragement, I was able to achieve something greater than I ever imagined. It can never be taken away from me, and I have her to thank. I don’t know if I will have a third baby, but if I do, she will be right next to me.
As first time parents, my husband and I were so thankful to have had Nicki work with us through my pregnancy and the birth of our daughter. Not only was it was important for me to feel comfortable with the person I hired, but also understand me and how I was nervous with my own anxiety and hesitation to speak up for myself in the labor process. As soon as I spoke to Nicki on the phone, I felt like I had known her forever and she was the person I wanted in the delivery room. As an added bonus, Nicki is a massage therapist, so those prenatal and postnatal massages really helped with the aches and pains, but also allowed me to spend additional time with her and get to know each other before going into labor, allowing me to feel even more comfortable on delivery day. She was very helpful when it came to our hesitations of what to expect and what to do while in labor. I labored almost entirely at home and was in constant contact with Nicki through text and phone calls as to what was happening and when to go to the hospital. Nicki met us at the hospital and stayed with us until we went to the postpartum recovery room. After delivery, my baby was taken to the NICU and I don't know what I would have done without Nicki there to stay with me while my husband went with our baby girl. The whole experience is a bit of a whirlwind but with Nicki there, she knew exactly what to say and do to keep us informed and comfortable with what has happening. Nicki was responsive to all of my questions before, during and still to this day about my baby and offers advice and kind words when I need help to get through difficult days. I would highly recommend Nicki to anyone looking for a great doula and will definitely use her again for our next baby. So much so that I may even deliver at home!
Nicki was a comfort and lifesaver during a difficult labor. I had prolonged labor at home without progressing. Nicki was very responsive to my increasingly frantic text messages and had lots of good ideas. Nicki met us at the hospital and ended up spending almost 24 hours with us. She was a calming presence and guided us through lots of positions. This was especially nice since the midwives were really busy and didn't spend much time with me. I'd absolutely recommend her services!
I would highly recommend Nicki to anyone considering using a doula. As first time parents, it was so comforting to have her by our side to help us make medical decisions and stick to our plan of having a natural birth. I ended up having back labor and was in a lot of pain and I would not have been able to go through it drug free without her support and encounragment. Looking back, I can't imagine going through our labor without her. I can't think of anything more important than hiring a great doula to ensure you have a positive birth experience and you'll be in great hands with Nicki!
I have nothing but positive feedback to give after working with Nicki. With the assistance of Nicki, I was able to have a successful unmedicated birth. I am confident that this would not have been possible without her there. Nicki's calm demeanor compliments her vast personal and professional experience to promote the optimal doula experience. She supported our questions both prior and after delivery and was present with us at the hospital for what ended up being a long delivery, assisting and advocating in our natural birth. The medical staff on numerous occasions offered up medical interventions that Nicki knew was not in my birth plan. I am confident that without her there to advocate on my behalf and offer up other suggestions, my birth story would not have been what I had hoped for. After the birth of my baby, Nicki stayed with me to asssist with my first breast feeding and tended to my immediate postpartum needs. My husband has commented how reassured he felt to have her present for the delivery and has stated he would encourage his expecting co-workers to seek out her services.
I can highly recommend Nicki for her doula services and would not hesitate to use her again myself in the future. I would also recommend her prenatal massage services.
I was incredibly thankful to have Nicki's guidance leading up to my VBAC. Her personal experience with having a VBAC really made me feel at ease and understood. During early labor we were in contact and her suggestions were very helpful and helped me and my husband figure out what my body was doing. Even after taking an extensive class and learning about birth, there is still that feeling of being unsure when things are actually changing and happening. Having her guidance kept me and my husband calm so we can focus on each other rather than being worried about what to do. At the hospital I was 6cm when I arrived which was amazing news to me. She knew to ask for alternatives and worked well with any conditions the doctor insisted on. Although the doctor wanted me to have an IV, Nicki was still able to make sure I was okay to labor in the shower and kept me mobile by making sure I wasnt limited by the IV. She also was a huge help with making it so my husband didnt have to leave my side if we needed something. She encouraged me to mix up the positions I labored in and helped me get into them or with any support I needed. I was very focused on handling the contractions but her and my husband worked nicely as a team to make me feel comfortable. I didnt need to ask for anything because I was being taken care of so well. When I was ready to push she reminded me how to push and along with my husband, she helped me lift and lower my legs as I pushed. That allowed me to let go and relax sooner between contractions. She was very encouraging during my pushes and really kept me going! I was able to achieve an amazing unmedicated VBAC, which was simply life changing! After my baby was out she snapped some photos with my camera that I really cherish. All in all, her calm, optimistic, and charming nature was perfect for my birth and her help was irreplacable.
I like Nicki, we hit it off shortly after meeting at Starbucks. Personality was important to me aside from knowledge on how to help my wife and child when we interviewed other people. Her experience was great and she gave us great recommendations on a Doctor that specialized in VBACs and a hospital that doesn't favor C-sections just because the drug doctor goes home at 5pm.... Long story, not the purpose of this recommendation.
Needless to say we hired her. We hired the Dr she recommended and the hospital. We were blessed that everything went according to plan this time. (Our second child, but first time with a Doula.) My wife stopped talking to me when we got to the hospital, that is when Nicki earned her keep. Don't get me wrong, the prelude stuff was great, like the Netflix video to watch. But she helped my wife handle the pain. They did a few different positions that helped and the shower this time helped a lot. Since I was on a gag order it pleased me to see them work as a team naturally.
My son was delivered with no problems. The Dr was great, the hospital was better than the last (still a hospital, less pressure from the nurses). If we go for number 3, I will have my Doula Oblongata by our side!!! Sorry, couldn't resist that one.
One last thing to my fellow non-preggar partners, Doula's are like a get out of jail free card in Monopoly, because the way you position it is "Honey, we will have the best team for you and our child around you. We have our birth plan and we know what will happen if the plan starts to faulter. We have Nicki to help us with our decision making to make informed decisions." Boom! That right there is a big stress alleviator and you don't have to try and become a Dr in 9 months with all that medical jargon.... Which let's face it, the preggar's want good intel. Oh and goodluck!
Having your first baby (especially a home birth) from the Dad's perspective is an exciting and terrifying ordeal. I know that the primary role of a Doula is to support the mom. But, I simply don't know what I would have done without having Nicki there as our advocate during the experience.
Our birth didn't go exactly how we planned. 20 hours into labor we all felt defeated, my wife, myself, our midwife... but, not Nicki. When we all felt it might be best to head on to the hospital (where we would have likely had a c-section), she held strong, dug in her feet and said, "No" we're not going anywhere. Although I didn't feel it at the time, that decision is something I am so eternally grateful for her confidence in my wife and her ability to persevere.
After 26 hours of labor, we gave birth to our beautiful daughter. Moments after the bliss of birth, my wife had some severe birth complications. Our joy was quickly trampled as my wife rushed into bed and our team proceeded with emergency procedures. At this moment more than ever, in hands down the scariest moment in my life, Nicki was there for me. As I held our minutes old baby, the only other comfort that I had was being able to look at Nicki in the eyes and know that she had our back and our interest in stone.
Alas, a few minutes later the ordeal of birth was over. But, over the next weeks and months, we continued to have struggled with feeding our daughter and while I thought Nicki's job was done she continued to be a tremendous resource to my wife and I. She came and checked in on us multiple times, called and often texted with resources, advice and just to make sure things were on the right track. She even brought over some delicious cookies that help with breastfeeding!
I honestly cannot recommend Nicki enough. I strongly urge you to look new further, you've found your match in Nicki.
PS: Nicki is a fantastic massage therapist a huge plus!
Both my husband and I never would have considered a doula but once we were introduced to the idea, we recognized that it would be beneficial to have an experienced advocate with us through out first time. Once we met with Nicki, we immediately knew she was the right choice. She is very experienced, familiar with doctors, hospitals and different options throughout the birthing process. We chose Nicki for these reasons and because she is nonjudgmental and supportive on however you decide to approach your birth (natural or with an epidural, etc). She was always available for questions we had during the pregnancy and also after our son's birth (which has proven to be even more of a lifesaver to my husband and me with all the conflicting information you get, even within the same hospital). Looking back on the day of my labor, we are not sure what we would have done without her. She was immediately available via phone/text as soon as I contacted her at 530am, and she instructed me on what do to from then on. She met us at the hospital where we learned I was already 7cm. When Nicki arrived (which was actually before my husband got there from parking the car) immediately began to make me feel better with massage and was covering me cold compresses throughout my labor. I was essentially too late for an epidural, but insisted on one anyway (I was 9cm by the time they were able to give me one). Nicki gave me the confidence to deliver without the epidural, which would have taken longer and may not have worked. She helped me through a particularly obnoxious nurse (who, though well meaning, had been putting me in uncomfortable positions and mostly agitating me) by speaking up about what seemed to have been working for me. My husband was great, but it is a huge comfort having someone so knowledgable and experienced (and has been through it with her own births) there to advocate for you. I would highly recommend Nicki and would use her again for future births. Thanks, Nicki!
I didn't plan on working with a doula- when I told my physician I intended on having a natural delivery, she asked me if I considered hiring a doula. She explained women working with doulas have less need for pain intervention during delivery, and gave me Nicki's card.
I looked up Nicki's website- and I could tell she was going to be just who I needed. I set up an appoinment to meet Nicki, and it was like love at first sight! We agreed on everything and I knew she was going to be the support I needed if I had any chance of having a natural delivery. (I knew my husband would struggle to see me in pain.)
Nicki suggested a few books to read and a DVD set of classes to watch. I didn't agree with every idea in the books and DVD classes but they did prepare me in a way that I would have never been without reading or watching them.
I had the most uneventful pregnancy, I felt great and continued to exercise the entire time. So when my water broke 4 weeks early, we were all suprised. I wasn't in active labor when my water broke, so I was nervous about going to the hospital and them wanted to push drugs to start my labor. One of the chapters in a book Nicki had suggested was actually called 'what to do when your bag of waters break, but your not in labor" (ha!)
Despite my water breaking a month early, I was still able to have a delivery I had wanted. Nicki set me up to be successful by giving me the materials needed to mentally get prepared. When Nicki met us at the hospital- she immediately started to massage my back and suggest different positions to help me stay comfortable and keep labor progressing. With the support of my husband, Nicki, and the physician- an epidural was never really on the table.
The delivery couldn't have gone any better- and I know we'll use Nicki again in the future:) I now consider Nicki and I, friends:)
My husband and I were not originally planning to hire a Doula, after learning more about the support they are able to provide we reached out to a few Doulas and did some phone interviews and had scheduled a meeting with Nicki. Prior to the meeting, Nicki came to speak at our Bradley Method class and we instantly knew she was who we needed to help us through this process!
Nicki's experience and knowledge were so very helpful and reassuring. It is her attitude and personality however that gave me the most peace and empowerment through the prenatal birth-prep process and ultimately through my labor and delivery. She is so calm and non-judgemental, her goal is that you have the most positive birth experience, no matter what that may entail. I was so scared I would be in labor for days and that I wouldn't be able to handle the pain, she was able to talk through my fears with me and my husband and help reassure me of how capable my body truly is.
I ended up having a shockingly fast, unmedicated labor and delivery that was so empowering and positive I relive it fondly everyday. I attribute this to the fact that I had incredible resources and support throughout my pregnancy that helped me prepare my mind and body for the physical and emotional roller coaster that is having a baby. Nicki played such an integral part in my preperation, I am so very grateful I had her at my side!!
Nicki has been such a blessing for the pregnancies and births of my second and third children. Both in a hospital and homebirth setting she has been a calming, reassuring, and knowledgeable presence. She brings a great deal of wisdom, support, experience, professionalism, and peace to pregnancy and labor and delivery. I was especially grateful for her understanding of vbacs and her empowerment of me to make decisions for my birth that were evidence-based and self-driven. I would not consider using any other doulas!
Nicki was our doula for both of our children (with two very different births), and our experience with her was amazing. Generally, she is supportive, encouraging, and respectful. My husband and I felt like she knew when to push back to our medical team (whom we respect and work well with) and when to go along with their recommendations. Her background in massage was a nice bonus, and the fact taht she personally has had four very different birth experiences was reassuring. Our son was born in November 2013. Nothing went according to plan. I was induced, and after 15 hours of labor I underwent an emergency cesarean (because I was laboring drug-free, they weren't able to give me an epidural). As a result, I was put completely under, and my husband wasn't able to be in the operating room. Our baby's first Apgar was a 1, but his second was an 8. Nikki was great during my labor, and once I was in the OR she was able to support my husband, and managed to get my new baby to breastfeed for close to an hour.
Our daughter was born two weeks ago today. I was hoping for a VBAC, but nervous that I'd end up with another failed induction. Nikki was a fantastic cheerleader, and we strategized my ideal goal (drug-free, successful VBAC) and my ultimate goal (that I would be conscious for this birth, and my husband would be with me). After several hours of quick and intense labor at home (which I actually thought was false labor for quite some time), we met Nikki at the hospital. Two hours and a failed epidural later, I gave birth to our little girl. Nikki kept me focused on the task at hand, helped me find the silver lining in the pain meds not working, and coached both me and my husband through the contractions and the pushing. She also distracted me from the delivering doctor's (not *my* doctor) assertion that my pelvis was narrow and I might not be able to deliver vaginally (this after I had started pushing). My husband and I both swear by Nikki.
We wanted to do a natural child birth with no drugs and we took a 12 week class to prepare. Even with the class we wouldn't have been able to do it without Nicki. We contacted her as soon as our water broke and she met us at our house and then came to the hospital with us. She helped us through the contractions - ensuring that my husband was fully involved. Nicki is the reason we were able to stick to our birth plan. I would have stayed laboring in the shower but Nicki made sure we kept switching positions and moving - which is the only reason I continued dilating. If not for Nicki I'm certain there would have been interventions as I wouldn't have dilated quickly enough for hospital standards. Nicki was also instrumental in ensuring baby came skin to skin and breastfed right away after birth. I would absolutely recommend Nicki to anyone as another level of support during labor/delivery regardless of your birth plan. We will definitely have Nicki there if we have a 2nd!
Nicki Worden is amazing! From the second I met her I felt very comfortable with her and knew that she would help me achieve the natural home birth I was hoping for. She was a great resource when I had any questions or concerns. She is a pleasure to be around and very calm. I hope to have a 3rd baby so I can enjoy her company more since my labor was much quicker than we all anticipated. I highly recomend her for anyone that is looking for that extra support no matter if you are having the baby at home or in the hospital. We can't thank her enough :)
What drew us to Nicki in the first place was her warm and nurturing demeanor. When we interviewed she showed genuine interest in how my pregnancy was going and how I was feeling. I felt very at ease talking with her and I could tell that hers the type of presence I I would want at our birth.
She was always available by text or by phone before and after delivery. My labor progressed very quickly and she met us at the hospital right when we arrived. She stayed with us for the whole labor process. She helped me feel grounded and in control of my labor and was a huge help as we started to learn to breastfeed.
I would highly recommend her if you looking for a calming, grounded presence during your delivery and we are so thankful to have had her along for the ride.
Initially I wasn't sure if I was set on hiring a Doula and my husband was somewhat skeptical of spending the money. Now after the fact it was the best money we could have spent. Meeting with Nicki, my husband and I knew that she would be the perfect choice to support us during pregnancy and then the labor.
She was such a wonderful resource and support to have when I went into labor. When my water broke at home but my labor wasn't progressing she gave me great suggestions and support to try and get my labor going. I was then admitted to the hosptial and needed to be induced. She met us in the hospital when my labor was finally starting to progress and I needed more support. She massaged my back and gave me suggestions of different positions. She was the perfect calm but strong support person that I needed, especially when nursing was not always as supportive. I was a little worried that my husband would feel replaced, but that was definitley not the case.
She checked on me multiple times postpartum when I returned home. I was having a few issues breastfeeding. She answered a bunch of questions and gave me suggestions that helped make breastfeeding easier the first few weeks.
I also hired Nicki for prenatal massages during the last few months of my pregnancy. I felt amazing after each massage!!!
My husband and I would highly recommend Nicki for her Doula services and if we get pregnant again we would not hesitiate to hire her again. I also would highly recommend her for her prenatal massage services!
Nicki was my doula for my 2nd birth and she was fabulous! She showed up right when we were ready for her, and she was on the phone with me up until then checking in and encouraging me and my husband. Throughout my pregnancy she was a wonderful emotional support and her prenatal massages kept me sane while dealing with severe sciatica. During the labor she was a confident leader, particularly when I hit the point where I didn't know what position I wanted to be in, or how to get into the next, she gently but firmly guided me, so I could just follow her lead and focus on the present contraction. She never replaced my husband, but rather directed him as needed and was the invisible support that just did what needed to be done without being asked. Her massage technique was so helpful and she helped me listen to my body and trust myself to work through labor as I needed. Post-partum she was a great support and encourager, as she came to my house and asssisted with breastfeeding and navigating post-partum depression. She is a woman with a heart to encourage and support families in whatever birth setting and birth plan works for them. I highly recommend her to everyone looking for a doula.
When my husband and I found out we were pregnant, finding the right Doula for us was a top priority. We were encouraged to interview 2 to 3 different Doulas - which we did. Nicki Worden stood out during our initial meet and greet for several reasons: 1) she had a calm demeanor, 2) she had certifications as a Doula & massage therapist, and 3) she has attended over a hundred births!
Nicki met with us prior to the birth of our son. During that time we discussed our birth plan and brushed up on labor. Due to Nicki’s experience in the field, she has a personal relationship with each of the midwives that could have delivered our son. She also knew and shared the hospital’s policies/procedures with us.
In addition to meeting prior to our birth, Nicki was there for me via text or email. I was able to ask questions and get a reply quickly. I asked anything and everything - Did my water break? Do you cloth diaper? How should I sleep at night to relieve the pain I was feeling? Etc. Etc.
When I went into labor we kept Nicki informed through text message, and called her when we knew things were quite active. Nicki arrived promptly at our home and coached us through the next steps. When at the hospital, Nicki was a tremendous encouragement to me. She helped me find my ideal pushing position and even helped me hone in on what was an effective push. It was truly a joint effort between Nicki and our midwife.
During my second week of postpartum, she paid a visit to the three of us. She probably answered 20+ questions we had about parenting, breastfeeding, cloth diapering, my postpartum body, and more!
My husband will tell you that Nicki gave him the confidence he needed to help me through the most amazing experience of our lives with great ease and success. Without a doubt, we would recommend Nicki Worden as a Doula. We will certainly use her for future children.
Nicki was fantastic throughout my entire pregnancy and homebirth. She checked in with me to chat and see how everything was going. She answered my questions and provided great insight about my doctor. She also made sure that she knew how best to support me throughout labor.
When I went into labor, my husband called Nicki and she came right away. My labor progressed quickly (3 hours total), so her speed in arriving was huge! Her support during this time was immensely helpful. My contractions were very intense. Nicki was able to find the right spots to massage/apply pressure to in order to lessen the intensity of the contraction. She was very open to me telling her what helped and what didn’t - she would adjust accordingly. She also provided very sound advice about my breathing and relaxation. She was also a great encourager – boosting my confidence! This allowed my husband to hold my hands and provide emotional support throughout contractions. It was a perfect combination! Once the doctor arrived, Nicki was able to give him useful details about how my labor was progressing (details I couldn’t verbalize in the midst of labor and that my husband wouldn’t have known). She worked alongside the doctor very well.
After my baby was born, Nicki stayed and helped a ton! She basically cleaned up all of the mess from the birth. She started laundry, took out trash, made our bed, helped get me cleaned up, got me something to drink, and I could go on and on! This was so helpful because it allowed my husband and I to enjoy the precious first few hours after birth with our new baby. Those moments are some of the best memories of my life and Nicki helped to make it that way! Even my family members that were there commented on how wonderful it was to have Nicki there. I hope she’s still a doula when we have our next child because I can’t imagine our next birth without her! I highly recommend her!!
I was on the fence about hiring a doula for my first birth, and my husband was even more skeptical, but hiring Nicki was the best decision we could have made. I really wanted to have a natural birth, and was delivering at a hospital with an OB, so knew having a doula would be instrumental in helping me achieve that goal. In the end, I had to be induced at 41 weeks and 4 days, and had a 36 hour labor that ended in a c-section. Baby just did not want to come out, and was also a big baby.. 9 pounds, 12 oz and 22 inches long. It was a pretty tramatic labor/birth, and having Nicki there made it manageable, and even though I had a c-section, I am at peace with my decision because I know we did everything we could do. Nicki was so great the entire labor, and kept suggesting different positions, and would help explain things to my husband when the doctor came into the room. My husband 100% agreed we needed her after the birth, and was so happy to have her there. He was able to sleep for 30-45 minutes at at time, and also leave the room a few times, which he wouldn't have been able to do without Nicki there with me. She was also so positive, encouraging, and made me feel safe when things weren't going so well. She is amazing at what she does, and has the most calming demeanor. I would recommend her to anyone, and will be calling her again when #2 comes along.
We have nothing but amazing things to say about my experience with Nicki! My husband and I first met Nicki when she came to talk to our Bradley method birth class. We had thought about the possibility of using a doula for our birth, but had not come to a final decision. After hearing what Nicki had to offer and feeling connected to her personality we decided to meet with her and discuss the possibility of using her as our doula. We met with her and felt very comfortable with her. We decided to hire her and from the beginning she was available for questions. When I first started going into active labor we called Nicki and she came to our house at 3 in the morning and slept on our couch so my husband was able to get a couple hours of sleep while I worked through contractions. She masssaged my back for hours as i worked through back labor. She worked with my husband for a large portion of the day before we headed to the hospital. Once at the hospital she worked with me through an incredibly difficult labor process which resulted in a c-section after attempting every possible avenue for a natural vaginal birth. She was calm, informative, and such a support through the entire process and we will definitely be using her for our next birth. Nicki is wonderful and we highly recommend her!
My husband and I had a difficult experience with the birth of our daughter in 2013, which ended in an eight day NICU stay. After much research, taking a Bradley method class, and educating ourselves, we decided having a doula would only benefit us in ensuring we had the birth experience we were looking to have. We met with a few doulas, and after meeting with Nicki, we knew we had to hire her. When speaking with her, we just felt a sense of calm come over us, and we wanted that during our delivery. Nicki had her own difficult birth experience, so I knew that she understood how important it was for me to have a different experience and I knew she would work as hard as possible to help us advocate for ourselves. When my water broke, Nicki and I were in constant contact. She let me take the lead, and came over when I asked, helping massage my back, and helping me to relax. She offered up many different suggestions for ways to speed labor up. She helped us to decide when it was best to head to the hospital, to avoid an infection, and gave us her opinion only when asked, which helped us to work together first. I was admitted to the hospital at 8 PM on a Monday, and our son wasn't born until almost 2 PM on Tuesday, and she was our rock during that long and difficult night. She kept suggesting different positions to try, and different techniques, which all helped to get things moving. She was very supportive when I made the difficult decision to request pain relief and again when I requested an epidural. When I felt like giving up, she gave me tough love that I needed to keep going. She gave me a boost of confidence to tell the nurses and midwife that I was ready to push after two hours of being told to wait. Without a doubt, I know that hiring Nicki allowed us to have a natural, though not unmedicated, vaginal birth, despite the fact that our son was 10.5 lbs!
Nicki is wonderful! We had planned for a natural birth. We took a Bradley method class, I ate all the right foods, did our labor exercises each night before bed, pretty much everything we are supposed to do to have labor go smoothly. At my 41 week checkup I had an ultrasound to check the levels of amniotic fluid. The ultrasound tech informed me my baby was breech. My midwife wanted me to have an emergency c-section right away. I was frantic, yet I knew that my baby was fine having passed the stress test and there was plenty of fluid so what was the emergency? Nicki immediately informed me of my options for inversion techniques. I told the midwife I was not consenting to a c-section until we had tried everything. Nicki scheduled me a chiropracter apt. to attempt the webster technique. She arranged for an acupuncturist to come to my home to perform acupunture and moxibustion techiques to help baby turn. She provided daily consultation to make sure we were well informed when debating on what to do, if/when to schedule c-section, the risks/benefits of waiting/not waiting for baby to flip. Every day the midwife would call trying to get me to come in for a c-section. Nicki provided us with the information we needed to ensure we were doing things on our terms, not the hospitals. The week was a rollercoaster of emotions but Nicki was there every step of the way. Through her guidance my husband and I were able to make the decision to schedule a c-section having known we tried everything we could. Nicki there before the surgery and after for support. She prepped me on everything that was going to happen as well as the recovery phase and stayed with us at the hospital until we had successfully got my beautiful daughter to nurse. My husband and I are eternally grateful for everything she did for us. Although we were not able to have the birth experience we planned, her support and encouragement was worth every penny!
Nicki came highly recommended by two other moms that have used her services. She was a huge asset to our birth team. Her presence is very supportive and calming. She's so easy to be around and intuitively knows how to offer help and support. I'm so glad she was a part of our special day. She really helped us have the natural, drug-free birth that we wanted. I'm not sure I could've done it without her. I would hire her again when we are ready to have baby number two. I would also highly recommend her to others that are looking for a Doula. Additionally she is a wealth of information and has lots of experience with numerous midwives, obs, and hospitals in the Chicagoland area.
When I first met Nicki I knew she would be a great support to have in the birth of our son. Prior to my due date, Nicki was always available to answer questions in a very timely manner. She checked in frequently as my due date approached. When I knew it was finally time for our little guy to make his appearance, Nicki was with another client for a scheduled c-section. Nicki alerted me of this prior so I was not surprised. Inconveniently, my water broke before labor really got going. Nicki made herself available as much as she could during that time and also had her backup doula contact me. Once she was finished assisting her other client, Nicki talked us through our options since things were already not going as planned. We ended up heading to the hospital as that was our practices protocol. Nicki stayed in contact with my husband as I was still in early, fairly comfortable labor. Once things picked up, Nicki was there right by my side, massaging my back and offering position suggestions. As labor continued, Nicki was extremely encouraging and calming. Unfortunately, labor went on and on with little progress. Despite having planned a natural birth, it was time to consider pitocin. After 15 hours of natural labor and sleep deprivation, I decided on the pitocin and an epidural. Nicki assured me that I had given my all and supported my decision. We thought it would be smooth sailing at this point, but fast forward about 12 hours on pitocin plus 5 hours of pushing, Nicki was still right by my side! She was an awesome motivation during my pushing when I didn't think I could work any harder. Without Nicki, I would have probably opted for interventions much sooner and I would have always wondered if I could have done more. Even though my labor was far from what I planned, I have no regrets thanks to Nicki and my husband. Nicki feels like part of our family now! I would highly recommend her!!
We had planned for a natural birth, but our baby had other plans. My water broke without labor starting, and 24 hours later I had to be induced. We were also a meconium delivery, and there were some concerns about the baby's wellbeing. Nicki was available to us throughout everything, helped us to make calm and informed decisions, and to choose a path that ultimately led to a healthy baby, which was our goal above all other things. While it wasn't exactly the birth experience we had planned on, we got great comfort in knowing that we made every effort to respect our wishes and to keep the baby safe. I truly believe that had we not had Nicki to talk to, offer advice and experience, and later to be there with us at the hospital, the outcome may have been much different. I can't say enough good things about her and her calm reassurance. I really can't imagine having gone through this experience without her!!
Nicki is amazing and so dedicated to her clients!
What initially appealed to me is that she has had a range of personal experience with her own 3 kids- I wanted to have a natural birth, but you never know what to expect and I felt Nicki would be able to walk me through my options during any chaotic decision making times. She also seemed open to any requests I had and didn't asign to a particular birthing style or philosophy.
At first I had been a little hestitant with her living about a 45min drive away, but it did not inhibit her service at all. We had just had our first official session then I went into labor (4 weeks early) a few hours later. She must have just gotten home but drove right back into the city to the hospital to meet me. My husband hadn't yet arrived, so it was great to have her there during that time and she stayed by my side through the early morning hours when my daugher was born.
Though I have been a little slow getting this review up here, I would definitly recommend Nick to have by your side.
Nicki is a wonderful support resource for expecting families. I didn't know much about the role of a Doula prior to hiring Nicki, but I'm so glad I did! She is full of great information prior to labor and delivery. I was looking for a person with experience to help cut down on the noise from everything I was reading online. She helped me focus and act on the information that I really cared about. Nicki provided example birth plans and discussed how to personlize it per our needs. I felt much more informed going into labor.
Having Nicki there in person was great. She's warm and friendly, very easy to be around. I had a difficult labor and appreciated that I was able to consult with her and my husband as each decision had to be made. I fully believe due to Nicki's support and coaching in the last hour, I avoided a C-Section. Overall, I was really happy to have Nicki on my support team and would recommend her to other expecting moms without hesitation.
Nicki was an excellent choice to have as our Doula. At first, we didn't want one because we thought we could do this ourselves given our Bradley Training, but once we heard Nicki speak at our final Bradley Course, we knew her expertise and personality would be a great asset to achieve our goal of having a natural birth. Nicki is very calm and relaxed. She is well thought out, logical, encouraging and extrememly supportive. My birth was by the book, nothing really happened out of the ordinary. And yet, we are still so happy we had Nicki. We feel it is because of her that I was able to arrive to the hospital at 9cm's. Having Nicki at our house and giving different ideas to speed up the labor helped immensely. I was so comfortable and felt her calming presence. My husband was also very involved with helping physcailly support me in all the different positions to have contractions. Even my husband felt extrememly supported by Nicki. He was initially afraid she would replace him and that is absolutely NOT what happened. While I labored at home during the night, I would text Nicki with different questions about what I was feeling etc. while hubby slept. That was very helpful to calm me down. The one time we majorly looked to Nicki for her expertise was when my OB offered to pop my bags of water to help get me to the pushing phase. Hubby and I didn't know what to say and directed that question to Nicki. Nicki was aligned with our birth plan and was our advocate, so we knew she would give an educated answer that would support our goal. Sure enough! She said it's good to pop the bags at that point since I was so far along and it would only speed everything up. And it did! 45 minutes later, our baby was born perfectly healthy and alert! I will always have a doula in the future, and hopefully it's Nicki if we still live in the area!
Nicki is awesome! Right away, I felt incredibly comfortable with her. She met with me a few times before the birth of our daughter to go over my birth plan and gave me some really helpful ideas. When I found out I was going to be induced, she really helped calm my nerves and because she's had personal and professional experinece with my OB, explained he wouldn't be scheduling me for an induction unless he felt it necessary. The day of delivery, Nicki was there every step of the way. When I wanted to quit (yeah, right) and was begging for drugs, she reminded me over and over again that I was doing it and doing a fantastic job at that. She helped suggest different positions to labor in and because she's a LMT, she was able to apply counter-pressure for relief. After 3 hours of pushing (and some choice words from me), my daughter was finally born! Nicki's support never wavered- not even for an instant. She stayed with us after the birth to help me get the baby breastfeeding which was an awesome help! Nicki was an amazing asset to my birth team; I couldn't have done it without her. I wouldn't hesitate to hire her again for baby #2!
I can only hope that sometime in your life you get the chance to meet Nicki. As the father I was not sure I really understood what a Doula did. I have a clear vision of it now. The decision to have a Doula was brought up by my wife and after a little research it was clear we wanted one. It helped me, the father, be at ease knowing someone would be there as a back-up and to tell us when it was "really" time to head to the hospital. My wife wanted a natural birth and Nick helped with the birth plan. labor and delivery. She was my rock when I was scared and unsure of what was going on the during the nervous times. She put my wife at ease and made it clear every step things would be OK...
Before labor she provided massage to my wife who was in need of relief... and once labor started she made sure we knew we had someone who was there for us. Once labor started and we were at the hospital it was clear we had made a smart decision. Nicki's experience made every scaring moment "calm" She gave me the confidence that all was going to ok and made my wife at ease... well as muich as ease as Labor can provide lol.
We love Nicki, we consider her family and even after the birth Nick came to visit and has kept it touch. This is more than a job to Nicki. Its a labor of Love..
Thank you Nick we look forward to you being a part of Kaydens life and any future kids we have
Mike, Serena and Baby Kayden
I encourage anyone thinking about using a doula to consider Nicki as part of their birth experience. For the birth of our daughter, we had a long labor period and worked at home with Nicki before heading to the hospital. Nicki was fabulous in helping our labor move along, offering many suggestions to progress labor and providing encouragement and emotional support for both me and my husband. Upon arrival at the hospital, Nicki worked wonderfully with our midwife, the nurse on staff, and my husband to establish a great "birth team". We were able to have the natural childbirth experience we wanted, due in no small part to Nicki's help and support. This was our first birth experience, and Nicki was essential in helping us where we were at all stages of labor and helping us know when to labor at home longer or travel to the hospital. I believe had we not had her help and expertise, especially early on, I would have been pressured to have a C-section for our delivery....so in this aspect (among others) Nicki was indispensible.
Coming from Europe, the idea of having a doula was as natural as childbirth it self to me. We knew right after our first meeting with Nicki that we would like her to be a part of our birth team. During the following pre natal visits Nicki provided us with great information regarding natural birth and gave us even more confidence. She put me at ease with answering my many questions either quickly through text message or more in detail via email. She helped us with creating a birthplan which met my husband and my ideas, without giving her own opinion to influence our decisionmaking. She informed us about new born procedures after I had asked abiut them. These visits were of great value to my husband and I. My labor was anything but usual, very fast with an equally fast delivery. Being surprised as we were by my fast progress, Nicki rushed to meet us in the hospital but made it for the birth of our daughter. She contributed to a calm and supportive environment and made sure our wishes were met. She helped me getting comfortable with the first attempts of breastfeeding and gave great advice of different positions of the baby. Before the post natal visit, Nicki again was always avalable through text message or email even in the middle of the night.
If you want a carring, supportive and attentive doula, I can highly recomment Nicki. I will make sure to reserve her time with our second child. I'm greatful to have had her being a part of my first pregnancy and child birth.
I cannot imagine what my labor and birth would have been like without the support of Nicki and her back-up doula, Lindsay. I had such confidence in Nicki from our prior meetings (including a fantastic prenatal massage) that I was not the least bit concerned when she told me it was one of the extremly rare instances where she was at another birth when my labor started. I knew that her back-up doula would be just as qualified and caring as Nicki and I was right.
Given that this was my first birth, I was a week early, and my water broke before labor started, we were pretty sure that Nicki would have plenty of time to assist the other mom and come to us. But, my labor was anything but usual and I needed assistance only a couple hours after my water broke. Lindsay came to the rescue and stayed with us until Nicki was able to arrive. My contractions came fast and furious and stayed that way for most of my labor. Lindsay was so helpful to both me and my husband as I labored through the night.
Despite having been up the entire night with the other mom, Nicki came to assist us the next morning. Remarkably, she showed no signs of being totally exhausted. She took over for Lindsay and was able to jump right in without missing a beat. I just remember feeling so lucky that we got to reap the benefit and knowledge of having two doulas instead of just one.
After the birth my husband and I agreed that the support of our doulas was worth every penny and then some. I'm not sure I would have even made it beyond triage without an epidural if they hadn't been there. We will be forever grateful that Nicki and Lindsay were with us as we started our family.
Absolutely incredible!! If you are looking for a strong, supportive, naturally caring, responsible, dependable and loving doula, who has experience with VBAC and HBAC, look no further!
I was pregnant with my second child when I was introduced to Nicki. Something about her really resonated and I knew she had to be part of my birth team. I wanted a home birth after cesarean and believed my best chance for that were to have strong, loving, encouraging people, who had personal VBAC experience like Nicki.
And I was right.
Nicki was thrilled to be a part of my team from the moment I hired her. Nicki, (unlike other doulas I tried to contact and interview), was very responsive and eager to get to know me and my family and was excited about my upcoming birth, (and not giving me reasons why she might not show up like the other doula was giving me).
I ALWAYS knew I could call or text Nicki and she would respond ASAP.
Nicki was always checking in on me - every day for several days before my due date.
When this labor started, (just before 1am), I waited to call Nicki until I knew labor had really started. I called her at 2:19am and she answered immediately. I told her what was going on and that I was going to get in the shower. I never had a chance to call her again but Nicki came right over to help. She helped by massaging my lower back initially then she sat with my toddler as we waited for friends to get her. Nicki immediately came back to my side and was there helping my husband and midwife the entire time. Everytime I looked up, I knew I would see Nicki's confident face or hear strong, encouraging words from her...and it made all the difference in the world.
I know my successful HBAC would never have been possible without Nicki's help. Highly recommend!!
I was first introduced to Nicki through Advanced Health where I was seeking prenatal chiropractic care. Already hearing how wonderful she was from other clients, I immediately fell into her fan club after our first encounter. This being my first pregnancy, I was interested in learning about doula services. Nicki not only thoroughly (and patiently) educated me but also provided me with several resources. She also shared her personal information for further inquiry with no pressure or commitment from me out of sincere interest in wishing my pregnancy be nothing but a positive experience. Knowing I wanted a natural birth and learning Nicki's beliefs, knowledge, and love for this job, I was convinced her services would be a great benefit for me. Although my boyfriend was at first hesitant when I introduced the idea to him, after meeting, he instantly liked her and agreed she was the perfect support for us. Nicki always promptly responded to my many questions without judgement and served as my mental calm. She guided us in developing a birth plan based on our wishes which helped us address and plan for issues we never would have thought of. This not only helped guide us on what to expect but served as the center force with the doctor and nurses for following through with a natural birth. Upon labor, Nicki excitedly met us at the hospital and made it her priority to be my specialized support from start to finish, never once leaving my side. She knew exactly what to do to help me progress and persevere throughout the entire 11 hour process. Nicki's continuous guidance, expertise, excitement, encouragement, persistence, calm, and humor helped us successfully birth a beautiful, healthy Baby boy. Thanks to her, we achieved the natural birthing experience we had wished for. We are so grateful for Nicki and would recommend her to anyone wishing a beautiful birthing experience. Nicki is a true gift which we will forever be thankful for!!!
Nicki was a wealth of information before the birth. Since I was a first-time mom, Nicki helped me to start thinking about the type of birth I wanted. She directed me to a number of books and DVDs and suggested the name of home-birth midwives in the area. My research helped me decide that a home birth with midwives was the best fit for me. I wouldn't have known where to begin without her guidance. During my 35-hour natural home birth labor, Nicki gave a number of suggestions to try to keep my unusually erratic, slow-moving labor going when things would slow down. Right after the baby was born, she helped by diapering and dressing him while the midwife was taking care of me. Nicki also gave me hands-on tips about how to hold and position the baby for a good latch for his first feed.
Nicki was an excellent doula. Very attentive to details that helped provide caring and useful support for me while in labor. Nicki is adaptable and non-instrusive - present when she's needed and helpful and quietly holding space when active support is not needed at the moment. I was grateful to have Nicki at my child's birth and would highly recommend her to others. I would certainly hire Nicki again.
After moving to the Chicago area from New Jersey, it was essential that I find a doula who could support me before, during, and after the birth of my daughter. This was my second birth, and I knew that I wanted a doula to be there for me during the process. I was so happy to find Nicki!
She immediately put me at ease from our first meeting and was extremely attentive to my desires and wishes. She made sure that she understood exactly what I wanted in my birthing process.
Nicki was always available to answer questions, including when I suspected that I was leaking amniotic fluid at 37.5 weeks. I had no problem getting a hold of her that morning, or in the middle of the night two days later when the suspicion was confirmed.
Nicki was extremely flexible and met me at the hospital when I asked her to arrive. I knew immediately that she would be my advocate as my labor began. She kept me talking when I needed a distraction, and kept me focused when I needed to be. Her skill as a massage therapist was also invaluable. When my labor did not progress as easily as I thought it might, she was there to give encouragement. There wasn't a moment during my labor that I was not grateful for her presence.
After the birth of my daughter, Nicki knew just how much space we needed as a family, but she always made sure that I had her support when needed. I was very grateful for her visit to our home a few weeks later.
I would highly recommend Nicki Worden if you are searching for a doula who will be gentle, attentive, and supportive. I cannot imagine my birth story without her.
My husband and I really enjoyed having Nicki as our doula for the birth of our first child. We chose to work with Nicki because of her calm demeanor and her experience. One of the things I most appreciated about working with her was her accessibility and her knowledge. Nicki was always accessible to us and I found it really helpful to have someone to ask some basic questions to both before and after the birth. Nicki was great during labor; my husband appreciated having someone who had a lot of experience to help us determine what stage of labor I was in and what we should expect next. She was always encouraging and I always felt very comfortable with her. We had the natural, unmediated birth that we wanted and it was such a wonderful experience. Immediately after the birth Nicki attended to me while everyone else was focused on the baby. She helped get breastfeeding started but has also been a valuable resource in the weeks after the birth answering questions ranging from how to starting pumping, to how to deal with mastitis, to how to get rid of diaper rash. Her knowledge of breastfeeding was extremely helpful as that is something I did not feel terribly prepared for and found to be challenging. I greatly appreciated working with Nicki; she was never judgemental, always made me feel calm and important, and helped us achieve the birth we wanted. When it comes time to have a second baby we hope to work with her again.
I first met Nicki during an interview at my house. I was about 25 weeks pregnant with my second baby boy when I decided that I wanted to have an unmediated birth and wanted to hire a doula to help me through the process. I knew as soon as Nicki came in to my home that she was the doula I was going to chose for my sons birth and I was so excited about it. She was so incredibly confident and compassionate and I could immediately feel how passionate she was for her work in helping mothers achieve the birth that they wanted. I loved her positive spirit and calm demeanor. The next 16 weeks were awesome. She was so easy to communicate with and answered all of my questions. She came by to visit with my husband and I on a couple different occasions. She was able to ease my anxiety and give me the confidence that I was going to be able to do what I set out to accomplish. she made me feel like I could conquer the world! The day I went in to labor with my baby, Nicki was there for every step of my labor. She helped me through the most difficult of times and reassured me I could keep going. She spoke so gentle and was able to get me back on track. Id like to also add that her massage throughout the labor and delivery was fabulous!! It was able to keep me focused and relaxed! This is just another thing to add to my fabulous experience with Nicki. I had my baby boy and Nicki was there to celebrate with me and she was just so proud, and I was proud of myself. It was a beautiful experience and I couldn't have done it with out her. The entire experience with Nicki was great from start to finish. Not only is she an amazing doula, but I'm also blessed and fortunate to call her a friend. I will definitely use her services again.. And I can't wait!!
Nicki's doula services are invaluable. You really cannot put a price tag on someone that is going to emotionally support and educate you before, during, and after the birth of your child in ways you never thought you needed. I walk away with having a positive birth experience thanks to my support team especially after original plans changed. It was nice to have someone in my corner rooting for me and my baby every minute of the experience. If it weren't for all of her relaxation techniques, i do not know how I could have managed. Nicki has a calming effect on you after just minutes of meeting her, and it was clear she only wanted me to have the birth that I wanted for our baby. Just the moment you want to give up, she will help you find the place you really want to be. It was also nice to know that she had three totally different births so that she personally could comment on what I needed to be prepared for. I am thankful for her extensive knowledge of breastfeeding as well; with some guidance, we are still going strong. I have a four month old now, but as soon as we are ready for #2, I will be promptly be reserving Nicki for her glorious doula services.
My husband and I give a lot of the credit for being able to have a natural birth of our daughter to our doula, Nicki Worden. She was a great support to us long before my first contraction - from helping us decide the type of birth experience we wanted, to connecting us with an OB and a chiropractor. I saw Nicki weekly for a massage to help with my back pain. During the massages, we had weekly chats about how my pregnancy was progressing, any concerns/anxieties I had, etc. Nicki was also always very responsive and helpful when I called her or e-mailed her with any questions.
When the time came to have the baby, Nicki was supporting me from the minute my contractions started - first over the phone, then at our house, and eventually at the hospital. Nicki didn't replace my husband, but her presence made my husband feel more comfortable, which empowered him to be a great support for me. Nicki didn't get to rest, though - she was with us through my entire loooooooooooong labor, putting heat packs on and massaging my back, getting me cold washcloths, water, etc. She also pushed me to walk, change positions, use the birthing ball, shower, etc. to help me progress. The nurses we had were very impressed with the support that Nicki provided and agreed with us that we were very lucky to have her on our team!
