However, at the present, I am pausing in my involvement with them to focus on my family and private doula business. I hope to return to working with Open Arms Perinatal services as I am able.

My husband and I had a great experience with Candace as our pre and post partum doula. We had interviewed a few doulas and found Candace to be easy going, non judgmental and understanding. Her sense of humour was a bonus for us. She was always quick to respond whenever I had questions.
I didn't feel any pressure to go one way or another with my birth plan and when it came down to it (and I decided I still wanted the epidural), Candace was fully supportive of my decision. Her constant encouragement and support throughout the labor process was tremendous and this was also a direct reflection of her knowledge and experience through the years. With her help and guidance, I was able to get through labor and delivery relatively quickly to deliver our baby boy. My husband also enjoyed working with Candace very much as they worked closely as a team to help me throughout the labor and delivery process. Candace kept things fun and calm while I was in pain and that helped manage my stress levels as well.
We are continuing to work with Candace as our post partum doula at the moment and her tips and tricks for the first time parents have been extremely useful. We are especially appreciative of her practical suggestions for how to take care of our newborn. I can't speak highly enough of our experience working with Candace and would recommend her to any new parents to be!
Candace has been my doula during both of my pregnancies. All the times she's been exptemely helpful: the relaxation techniques she taught me, the way she explained everything - all that made it really useful ways of coping with the labour stress.
I'm very thankful to Candace for being with me during my last labour, from the very beginning till the end. My spouse had to leave me for some time to bring my older daughter home, as that was the time for her to go to sleep, Candace stayed with me and that made me feel in control of my contactions' pain. As the result, I was smiling by the time I went to the pushing phase and the experience was altogether most pleasant.
I would highly recommend working with Candace and in case I'm expecting a baby one more time, she definitely is going to be my go to person.
Candace is AMAZING!
I had my 2 births, one C Setion (baby was breech) and a natural non medicated VBAC with Candace.
I can definitly say I would not be able to make it without her help! She encouraged me, informed me with all the needed information helped me understand the medical stuff and advocated for me in the hospital.
Without her I would end up getting another C Section.
She was also very responsive, helped me with all my questions and came for a home visits which were very helpful.
I would definitly recommend her!
My husband and I felt pretty prepared for labor; we'd read and practiced. When labor finally started we were managing ok- and then Candace arrived and everything started going INFINITELY better. She had a wealth of tools and experience to help me cope with discomfort while also providing support and guidance for my husband throughout the process. We found Candace to be immediately easy to trust and confide in, and her support was also really valuable in the weeks leading up to the birth. Now having been through the experience, I truly don't know how we could have managed without her there. In addition, she captured photos to help supplement our memories, and her support post-partum helped boost our confidence. We are incredibly grateful that Candace was part of the team that brought our daughter into the world.
So happy we found Candace! She is amazing, I had my first baby in a c-section, was doing everything I can to avoid the surgery but my baby decided to be breech. Candace supported me and my husbad, was always available, positive, caring and made all of our fears go away. As we're not born in the US it was hard for us to understand the local process and sometimes the doctors/nurses, Candace explained patiantly everything couple of times so we could comprehand it. She though us basics about birth and after how to deal with the baby.I really recommend Candace my birth experience would be totally different without her.
She also took amazing photos that are so important to us.
My son had never been a good sleeper, I kept hoping that he would "grow" out of it... At about 13 months he started to sleep regress and the little sleep I was already getting became even less. I started to feel like I was suffering from post partum depression again. My husband decided enough was enough and asked Candace to help us sleep train our son. I was really nervous that our son wasn't going to handle the transition well and expected lots of tears and long nights. It was the complete opposite! Candace is a baby whisperer! We were able to transition him from sleeping with us in our room and waking up every couple hours to sleeping in his own crib, in his own room, and sleeping about 10-11 hours straight! It was a game changer, we should have asked for her help a long time ago! I say this sincerely, Candace is amazing, she's a wonderful doula but more importantly, a wonderful person. Words cannot express our graditude!
I had a c-section for my first birth and strongly believed I shouldn't have had one. So for my second pregnancy, I was looking for help. One of my friends recommended Katie Bachand and Candace Barber. Now I am writing after having had a successful VBAC and can't thank them both enough!
Katie and Candace have helped me get the exact birth experience I wanted for my first child but didn't get. They both understood what I wanted out of my birth and learnt about me and my family and how my job and home situation was. They taught me practical tips that I could apply without changing my current lifestyle drastically. They took the time to talk to me about everything I wanted their advice about. They have far exceeded whatever is listed on their contract in every possible way!
Both Katie and Candace are constantly keeping themselves up to date and learning as technology and science evolves. Both bring a long track record of successful birth stories and I am fortunate that mine is a part of that list.
Katie doesn't treat this as a job but as her calling. Even if she cannot help out with something, she either finds out or finds the best person who can help. She brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and network that only comes by doing this so passionately.
Candace's warm demeanor and nonjudgmental attitude is very reassuring. She is hands on and helped me cope with massage and counter pressure during the labor. After the birth, she taught me among other things how to do a Sitz bath.
I am going to be handing out their contact to every pregnant friend of mine!
Working with Candace has been an absolute pleasure that far exceeded our expectations. We originally hired Candace after we found out we were expecting twins. She was recommended to us by Katie Bachand. After our first meeting with Candace we knew she would be a great fit, she was knowledgeable, straight forward and compassionate. She did not treat our news of twins as though it was a condition, instead she celebrated with us. Candace listened to our wishes, prior birth experience and offered assistance researching the best OBs & midwives.
At 10 weeks we confirmed we were having monoamniotic twins. We processed this news which means inpatient admission with monitoring at 25 weeks, cesarean delivery and probably nicu. Candace met with us listened to our concerns, offered support, helped tremendously in organizing our questions for our OB. She provided information to us on hospital births for twins and helped manage our expectations.
At our 16 week appointment sadly we found out we had lost both our babies due to a cord accident which is very common with monoamniotic twins. As we processed our grief we called Candace who came over that night, cried with us, offered support as I planed induced labor of our angel babies. She compassionately provided us with information that we would need to manage this birth and after birth.
During labor Candace provided exceptional support both emotionally as a listener of my fears, and provided relaxation techniques through massage, essential oils. One of the most amazing services Candace provided was taking beautiful photographs through labor and of our precious boys upon birth. We will have these pgotographs to remember our babies forever. I cannot say enough about what an incredible resource Candace was to us. I also cannot imagine this birth without her assistance. Having doula support allowed us as parents to focus on our babies and our recovery making even a tragic birth a beautiful experience.
My husband and I went Doula searching mostly as an afterthought - due to an odd chance that my husband may be out of town when delivery kicks in. We interviewed a bunch of Doulas and Candace impressed us with her experience, knowledge, friendliness and an hands-on attitude. We were so wrong about the value add of a Doula. And we couldn’t be more right about hiring Candace.
We met Candace for pre-birth visits where-in she explained the intricacies of birth and answered questions lingering from the Birth class. She suggested various techniques for coping with Birth and discussed our birth plan. More importantly, she got to know us as a family. Candace exudes a kind of warmth that endears her to you - you walk away after meeting her thinking you’ve known her for ages.
Back to the delivery - As it turns out, the contractions kicked in much earlier than the scheduled due date - my husband was out of town when labor kicked in and he had to rush back. I called Candace and she was by my side all through the delivery process (My husband reached the hospital an hour before delivery). She helped me work through the plan - did massages, helped me through the breathing. She was a constant source of strength for me throughout the delivery process - helping me work through the pain and focus on the end goal. At the hospital, she was working with the Hospital staff (for me). She had some great suggestions related to Birthing positions and her experience really shone through here.
Post-birth, we’ve troubled Candace with odds and ends - Queries related to the baby, lactation - even baby names :) She has years and years of experience (and close to 200 births if I am not wrong) and she always has an informed opinion.
Overall, I am so glad that I got to know Candace. She is a lovely person and a fantastic Doula. We can’t thank her enough. If you are having a baby, you want Candace by your side. She is amazing.
Candace has been apart of our lives during one of the most lifechanging experiences for any family. Since day one when we brought our son home she has assisted us and our new baby. She spent the first 6 weeks with us almost every night caring for me during post partum and our baby during the nights to allow us to get better rest. She is beyond kind, brilliant with babies and understands what my husband and I were going through with zero judgement. She walked into our home and was indredibly kind, happy and willing to help us in any way. She gave us the best advice and made us feel more confident in any situation. She inspired us and she could handle absolutley anything. She was always available via phone or text any hour to answer questions or ease concerns we had. Whether it was feeding related, recovery, sleep issues or anything at all - I felt so comfortable going to her and relying on her support. Candace is gifted when it comes to babies and families. Her impact on us has been so special and I am forever grateful for her hlep, guidance and direction. The difference she has made in our lives is truly remarkable and she will always hold a special place in our hearts.
I highly recommend Candace to any couple is who considering a doula. Candace was the first doula of a handful that I was supposed to meet that was readily available, flexible, and willing to work with my schedule. Therefore, I knew she was the right person to support my husband and I with our first birth. Not only was her diligence appealing to us, she was organized, prepared, friendly, and expressed her experiences through stories and folders with an abundance of professional certificates and photography. I told Candace that we would be moving and might not be within her range of traveling, but she did not care. This is how I knew she was passionate about her work. When she came for the first two prenatal visits she provided us with information through DVDs, music (hypnobabies), and supplies, for example she showed me foods I should buy to improve my nutrition. She even took a look at my prenatal vitamins and recommended that I switch to a better option to improve my heavy chest-breathing issues (that's another story). Candace was also supportive of our birth plan, which did end up changing due to "complications," and supported us through a C-section. She was non-judgmental, patient, and caring and demonstrated techniques (such as the hip-squeeze) for my husband to use when I was having contractions. She was always available by phone, email, and text when we needed advice or help before baby and after, and responded promptly. Her beautiful talent in photography was an added bonus and has been like therapy for my husband and I since the birth did not go the way that we had planned. However, looking at the photos of our baby and us helps us heal the wounds. Really, Candace will become an invaluable member of your family. We are so blessed to have met her.
We had been interviewing birth doula for a while and had been interviewed few before we meet Candace. The moment we interviewed Candace, we knew we want to have her as our birth Doula. We interviewed her on Friday evening and thought to call and confirm her appointment on Monday but I went into labor early morning on Monday. So we called Candace at 6 am to confirm and hire as doula and she was at our home by 7 am !!! During labor, she was calm and her expertise in pain reliving methods were spot on. When she said it during interview that she has pretty good upper body strength, I was not very sure about it but overall we were very happy with after interview so we went ahead and hired her, but during last stages of my labor when she was applying counter pressure on my back with and without Rebozo, I realized she really does have pretty good upper body strength :) ! She suggested a few of those techniques (massaging my back etc.) and all them were really helpful during labor. She also did birth photography and those pictures are priceless. She also did family photography session with our little one. Overall, we couldn't have asked more from her and we definitely recommend her as Doula. Her positive nature and smiling cute little face were a big plus during that time.
My husband and I were new to the area. With no family here, and 22 weeks pregnant with our first little one, we were looking for some extra support. After interviewing several doula's we met Candace. I knew she was the right fit for us right away. Her positive energy is undeniable and her credientials won us over. Throughout the process, Candace felt more like a family member than a doula. In addition to the one on one sessions we had with her, she suggested classes, videos, and even products to help with preparing for delivery and the first days with the baby. She went above and beyond on many occasions. Once I went into labor things didn't go as planned, which I hear is often the case. Having Candace there as my advocate and advisor in times when I was completely exhausted and my husband was unsure of the next move really made the difference for us. I would recommend her to anyone looking for support leading up to and the day of labor. Her services are well worth the expense.
I met Candace while at a Bradley birth class where I was a coach for another couple. Once baby #2 was concieved I knew I'd want/need a doula for my home birth but after emailing another doula who flaked out before meeting me, I contacted Candace. Candace was readily available for prenatal meetings and contact via email or phone. During my labor, she arrived quickly and was the right amount of hands on during my contractions. Candace was helpful in coaching my husband and sister to support me and kept everyone involved with the process. Her photography during my labor and birth was an awesome help, since my family could stay involved while Candace photographed us during precious moments. I also had her encapsulate my placenta afterwards. All in all, I am very pleased with my decision to hire a dola for my 2nd birth and I am glad Candace made herself available to me. She was a necessary member of our birth team and a joy to be around or talk to.
Candace was an absolute lifesaver! After our doula - close family friend with great doula experience - broke her leg, she referred us to Candace. We met her one week before giving birth. She met with us the very next day and was perfect! She gave us great empowerment, support, and guidance leading up to the birth. At birth she gave us just the right amount of advice, encouragement, and hands-on technique, and has provided good support and home visits since. We had the perfect birth thanks largely to Candace! Kerri and James
As a mom and generally cautious person,I am very particular in who I extend my relationships to and whom I can really open up with.Candace was everything I hoped for in a doula, very encouraging and helpful through all the changes and unexpected. Very easy to talk to and open. this was my second birth and I was going to be doing a all natural birth with a midwife in a birthing center since this was my hope for my first child but I was not able to due to complications that are fairly common for first births but alas my body would not have it and my high blood pressure sent me back to the hospital with a scheduled induction, I was very disappointed and pretty shattered by the fact I couldn't do a "all-natural " birth where I wanted....with all that said Candace was there for me the whole time, telling things to do to help with my blood pressure and prepare my body for a scheduled birth and kept encouraging me, I ended up having some small labor before the induction and after a couple hours was in full labor and ended up having only about 3hours of hard labor with no epidural or pain meds, plus they took me off the pitocin toward the end! I know it was the help of Candace and of course my husband that got me through! Thanks to all Candace's experience and tips I was able to have my natural birth! Plus Candace was very flexible with our situation and it was a big blessing, we are so happy we found her. Thank you!!!!
Candace was my doula for both of my births (2012 and 2014). It was comforting (for me AND my husband) having someone there with so much experience. For my first birth, I arrived at the hospital 9 cm dialated, and the staff wasn't ready for us. Candace helped calm my husband while everyone else was rushing around us, and she helped me stay focused on breathing through my labor. When it came to pushing, she was again very helpful with positioning and focus. For my second child, Candace came to our house earlier in my labor, helped speed things along with massage and acupressure, and again was a wonderful presence in the hospital during the rest of the labor and afterwards. I also appreciated that she would gently remind the nurses and doctor what was in my birth plan, because I certainly wasn't in the mindset to do so. I really think that Candace's years of experience are invaluable to the service she provides, and she also stays current with the newest information and science on birthing. She has attended so many births and walked women of all demeanors through the process, that I can't imagine there are many new things out there that she couldn't handle. I highly recommend her!
Along with being a lovely and cheerful lady, Candace is an excellent doula! She brings a strong confidence and amazing ability to connect with the laboring mama. She has a special gift of being fully present and attentive in a way that feels neither intrusive nor pushy. She supported me, my husband, and our newborn in so many simple and helpful ways. I benefited greatly from her services as a birth doula. I highly recommend her services.
Thank you, Candace!
Candace is an amazing Doula. We called her when my contractions were about 4 minutes apart, close to midnight. My husband mentioned that I had gotten a little stressed when the contractions started coming more quickly and Candace said "If the mom is panicky, I need to be there" and she was at our house within the hour. She worked with us at our house, giving me different positions to help manage the contractions, until I wanted to go to the hospital. At the hospital she was an incredible advocate for us with the staff and was truly a facilitator for me and my husband to have a beautiful labor and birthing experience. She helped him figure out how best to support me during the birthing process, everything from showing him positions that would be helpful for him to support me during contractions to how to help me maintain stability while pushing. She argued with the nurse for me to have the bed set up so that I could push in the way I wanted to (squatting rather than laying back). She somehow managed to be in the room and at our sides at the most critical moments, yet she also hung back at times to give me and my husband room to have a private and intimate experience together. The one time that I felt scared during the birthing process I looked up to see Candace with a huge smile on her face, assuring me that everything was going well and that I was doing great. In addition to being absolutely critical in our amazing birthing experience, Candace did several pre- and post-partum visits with us and also took wonderful and tasteful pictures at the birth, which I am now so very grateful to have. We are so grateful to have had her with us and absolutely recommend her to anyone who wants a confident, supportive, and loving birthing coach/facilitator with them.
No one can promise you the delivery you want, but I know that without Candace my amazing experience would not have been possible. Here are some of the many things I appreciate about Candace and her approach as a doula:
She is amiable, genuine, and caring.
She customized her approach to my wants for my delivery. I wanted a drug- and intervention-free delivery and she provided me with the resources that helped make that possible. Having gotten to know Candace as well as I have, I know that if I had wanted an alternate approach to my delivery (such as an epidural) she would have fully supported that decision and helped me prepare for it as best as possible.
She is a powerful blend of knowledge and intuition. During my labor she seemed to anticipate what I needed before I even knew I had a need. During the pushing stage she intuitively knew what I needed even though I myself didn’t know. I remember being relieved that someone “got it” and it gave me extra strength after the very trying “transition” phase of my labor.
She is gentle yet firm. During my labor and delivery she would make recommendations and I would either comply or refuse. If it was something she felt strongly about that I was scared to do—such as change my laboring position—she gently persisted but never tried to strong-arm me into complying. Between contractions, and especially during the pushing stage, she would gently remind me of things I had forgotten. Even though she had to remind me of certain things several times—such as relaxing certain muscles—I never felt like I was failing or doing badly. I felt supported and cared for the entire time.
I didn’t have any female relatives around to help usher me in to this new phase of life. Candace helped to make my transition into motherhood as smooth as she possibly could. For that I will be forever grateful.
Candace is energetic, always smiling, keeping everyone active and spreading positive energy around her. She is experienced and very knowledgeble and helps to have an unmedicated birth as much as possible. She uses reflexology to relieve stress and pain.
During my labor I found her to be extremely supportive, patient and encouraging. She was always available over the phone and/or in-person despite her busy schedule, before and after birth. I recommend her for that extra support and motivation you get by having her as your doula.
Candace was my cousin's doula; she was going to have an interview with my cousin one afternoon, but that morning my cousin went into birth, so she was hired! My mother and I had been in the "neighborhood" when my cousin went into labor, so that is how we came into the picture. My mother and I were very, very thankful for Candace's presence. She was very calm and patient, and did a great job of trying to keep us all calm for my cousin during labor. She talked my cousin through things she was feeling, explained what her body was going through at the beginning of the labor, and gave her tips on how to make it faster and easier when it came time to push. Candace was with my cousin through the whole labor, even when they sent her back home for a short time to be more dilated. Had she not been there, my poor cousin probably would have ripped out the throats of her frantic family (we would have driven my cousin nuts had Candace not explained that she just wanted peace and quiet at times). It put us at ease to know that my cousin was being helped by somebody experienced during childbirth, because my mom, my uncle, and I (ESPECIALLY my uncle and I) had no idea what to do in order to help. After the baby was born, Candace has been checking on my cousin and offering her help in ways none of us would have been able to. She was very kind, easy to get along with, and her flexible wages were extremely helpful for my cousin to be able to have her.
