Carrie was our doula for the birth of our 3rd child in March 2017.  Being new to Albuquerque, she was a great support throughout our pregnancy, the day of our baby's arrival and postpartum.  I was hoping for a water birth at a local hospital but upon arrival at the hospital, my blood pressure was too high to be part of the water birth study they were conducting.  The initial midwife on duty wanted to augment my labor in order to ensure a safe delivery.  I was upset and could not think clearly, Carrie asked the midwife to give us some time to decide what next step we wanted to take.  I was so grateful that Carrie spoke up when I really couldn't. This allowed my husband and I to discuss the options without feeling pressured.  Thankfully, that extra time gave my body time to go into active labor naturally, without augmentation. Although I was unable to deliver in the water, Carrie prepared the tub for me and I was able to labor for a short time in the water before the baby arrived. Throughout my labor, Carrie was amazing, she helped me concentrate on breathing through each contraction and relaxing each part of my body.  She applied counter pressure to my lower back during contractions as needed.  She also could sense that I needed some coaching while pushing, which really helped.  I truly feel that I had a really smooth labor and delivery thanks to Carrie's excellent support. My husband and I are so grateful to her and would recommend her to anyone looking for a doula!

I can't recommend a doula enough for any type of birth and Carrie was wonderful! I have no idea how I would have made it through my labor without her. I had a typical non-medicated birth in a hospital lasting about twenty-four hours (about twelve of which were in the hospital). Carrie, having done her research beforehand, knew just what I needed throughout my labor. She was attentive, caring, and ready to try whatever I needed to push on. She took thorough notes as able which were awesome to read through later (and only a little scary!). I truly believe childbirth is easier when shared with people who genuinely care. It’s clear that Carrie loves everything about mothers, childbirth and everything in between. She is highly educated and always learning more. She was a wonderful advocate when I had no idea what to expect. Do yourself a favor and have a champion by your side when you go through something so amazing and wonderful and totally terrifying!

I hired Carrie to encapsulate my placenta after reading about all the benefits that doing so could provide post partum. Carrie was very professional and communicated with me often in the weeks leading up to the birth of my daughter. After coming to Dar a Luz birth center to retrieve my placenta, Carrie called witihin 48 hours to let me know that my capsules were ready to pick up. In addtion to 192 capsules Carrie also gave me an impression of my placenta, my umbilical cord in the shape of a heart, an awesome sitz bath and nipple cream which I highly appreciate. Thank you Carrie. I will be recommending you to everyone I know who is pregnant or will be pregnant in the future.

Carrie Murphy was simply excellent. She listened to our preferences, hopes, and dreams about the birthing process, and did her best to help make them a reality with professionalism, warmth, and a sense of humor. From our first meeting until our postpartum visit, we felt that she was an excellent, non-intrusive, advocate to our entire pregnancy and birth process. Our labor experience ended up being more complicated than expected, much of it in the hospital, and though we ended with a vaginal birth, we were in the gray zone where a c-section for hours. I was grateful to have someone else in the room who knew what to expect, knew what was normal, and knew when to encourage us to ask questions. As a health care provider that works in the hospital where I delivered, I had more efficient/medical term heavy conversations with the medical team for efficiency's sake. Carrie was able to translate these conversations into layman terms for my husband, and he could not stop singing her praises. Her emotional and physical support during the labor process were also key; doing a long labor with just a partner is exhausting for two people and having one more pair of hands to give that comforting touch or massage, grab a sandwich for my husband, and help brighten the mood by suggesting a change in music or conversation were all key to having the stamina to make it through. Her knowledge base and experience also helped the physical process of labor; both with pain relief via the TENS machine, physical touch, and position changes, as well as comfort measures such as helping to make sure I was hydrated, going to the bathroom frequently enough, putting cool cloths on my face, and applying lip balm as needed. These may sound like minor things, or things that all doulas should be doing anyway, but her knowledge base and ability to pick up on the mood of the room and nuance of conversation allowed her to be an incredibly effective support team member. I highly recommend her!

Even though I was having a planned cesarean, I knew I needed to hire a doula. I didn't have to worry though, because I knew exactly who to hire. I had been an aquantence of Carrie's for a little while and knew she would be my perfect fit.

Before the scheduled birth date, Carrie came to our house to go over what our expectations and needs were. On my due date we scheduled her to come over and do my belly cast. Was that tons of fun! And, I now have the most wonderful keepsake!

On the day of my cesarean in the OR prep room, she arrived on time, was there to support me through the horrendous IV challenge the nurses were having, and made me feel very comforted and at ease. She was there through the operation, giving me her full attention, and even taking amazing pictures to document our child being born. She stayed with me while my husband went with baby for a little extra breathing support. She was my support from start to finish, and I would have been stressed and lost without her.

During our postpartum visit, Carrie was very helpful with any questions or concerns I was having. She was even nice enough to help me out when in a bind, taking my five year old to her swim lesson.

Carrie went above and beyond, and I couldn't have asked for a better doula. Carrie was caring, professional, warm, loving, supportive, and funny! All the the things I really needed. She was a big part of my child's birth and I will never forget it.

I had a wonderful birth experience with Carrie as my doula. Since I knew I'd be going through childbirth on my own, I ddecided I needed a doula in my corner. I was immediately attracted to Carrie's energy when I first met her, and that she seemed to be sensitive toward non-traditional family situations. During labor, she encouraged me exactly how I needed her to. She was exactly the cheerleader I needed her to be. She also really helped me make some tough decisions about my labor. I felt like she would be able to adapt her coaching style to match the personality of any birth mother so that mom could have the best expereince she possibly could. Should I have another baby, I wouldn't hesitate to have Carrie as my doula again. I think she'd be great for your family too.

Carrie was an absolutely amazing confidant to have by my side through the birthing process of my son, Rylan. I initially had so much overwhelming anxiety and nervousness about the delivery, that it was extremely supportive to me to have Carrie join me through the process as my doula.

Carrie provided me with the insight, knowledge and tools that I needed to increase my confidence in my ability to achieve the calm birth experience that I wanted. She helped me to understand the fears I had surrounding the delivery process and ultimately helped me to create a more calm and composed environment for delivery. As my doula, Carrie brought to my birth experience a very sensitive, open-minded and non-judgmental approach to my son’s delivery. As a Native American woman, I had very high expectations of myself and after finding out I was being induced early due to health issues, it was extremely helpful to have Carrie help me to navigate the induction process with me.

In addition to providing prenatal support, Carrie provided hands-on support during my labor (with massages), and also helped me with identifying different labor positions to help ease my labor pains. But most importantly, as a doula, she provided me with the emotional support I needed to get through the delivery process without fear and anxiety. The support she provided before, during and after my son’s birth was invaluable.

When we first met Carrie, my husband and I weren't sure a doula was the right direction for us. I had a very traumatic birth experience with my first daughter, and was still unsure about having my second five years later. When we sat down with Carrie, it became immediately apparent to me that Carrie knew what she was talking about. She asked me pointed questions about my last delivery that helped both her and I hone in on potential issues and fears surrounding this delivery. My husband, who went into the meeting skeptical about the role a doula would play, found himself more at ease. Carrie was the perfect mix of professional and accesible, which helped both my husband and I feel at ease.

After hiring Carrie, I was really impressed with her detailed approach to helping me prepare for birth. She was supportive and listened to my concerns openly, and gave me great encouragement and information. She was the one who suggested I have a consult with Pam England of Birthing Without Fear, to try to work through my issues from my first birth. I not only followed Carrie's advice to talk with Pam, which was wonderfully helpful, but Carrie, my husband, and I went to a private group session with Pam, where we all learned how to work together as a birthing team. It was the perfect amount of emotional and physical support I needed to gain my confidence back.

Carrie was wonderfully helpful in suggesting resources to try when I was overdue and facing an induction. She recommended the Spinning Babies program, chiropractic, acupuncture, acupressure, massage, etc. and really helped me to relax about being overdue. And when the time finally came, Carrie was perfect in the delivery room. She helped me focus my breath, and did awesome counterpressure massage that made a huge difference. My husband was so glad to have the help in supporting me. He felt Carrie was well worth the money, and I'm not sure I would have had my succesful VBAC without her!

Carrie was really helpful getting a lot of information to me very quickly.  During our first prenatal meeting,  I told her that I was interested in hypnobirthing type options for my labor and delivery so that I could try and stay as relaxed as possible and make my labor and delivery easier on myself and the baby.  However, the hypnobirthing and hypnobabies programs were more expensive than I was willing to pay.  So, shortly after our meeting, that same day, she sent me an email with links to different meditations for pregnancy and birth as well as places to get mp3's.  I was impressed she found that information so quickly.  Also, she was willing to look for an extra backup doula for us if needed since she had two other clients, one due 2 weeks before me and one due 2 weeks after me.

During the second prenatal meeting, she brought one of her back up doulas with her so we could meet her and we felt very comfortable knowing that if someone went into labor before me and Carrie couldn't be there, we would have someone there.  It was very reassuring!

She checked up on me throughout the time when I hired her and when I went into labor seeing as how I'm not one to reach out for help, this was also nice!

Once I went into labor she was willing to come to our home and stay with my husband and me to keep us company.  This was great to keep us from getting nervous.

My labor and delivery didn't exactly go the way I'd hoped, but I had a very pleasant experience (well, except the contractions of course!).  Just her company helped immensely!  Then, when contractions started was when I knew I made the right choice.  There were times I didn't think I could get through, but she had me breathe or relax parts of my body and it made it so much easier to get through!

Speaking as a husband/father who has always prides himself on being strong, supportive and someone who rises to challenges and pressure, I don’t know if I could not have gotten my wife, or myself, through her labor near as well without Carrie.

I was a nervous wreck in the weeks before labor and Carrie was an extremely supportive and calming influence, I thought she was a real treasure to have. It wasn't until my wife went into labor when I realized just how valuable Carrie truly is.

My wife's water broke long before active labor began, something we were not planning on and even told in our birthing class hardly ever happened. Carrie came right over and helped ease our (ok my) anxiety. We had to go the Pitocin route after 18 hours and Carrie was still right there with us.

When I started to get scared, Carrie really shined. She helped us both understand what was happening, helped us communicate with hospital staff to gather all of our options and helped us (read me) understand things better to keep calmer than I would have been if she wasn't there.

When the Pitocin started to flow and active labor began, Carrie went from calming to full on support and encouragement. She helped me, as a husband, feel that I was really helping my wife get through by providing extra support, guidance and "directing traffic" when it came to getting my wife to move around, and generally made me feel that my wife had a real "team" of support around and that I wasn’t alone.

In short, Carrie not only helped my wife, she helped me. With a labor that triggered a lot of scary and confusing hospital red tape being waved in our faces, Carrie was calming at the right times, supportive right when we needed, an invaluable wealth of knowledge all around and even helped handle our families.

I'm so grateful we had Carrie by our side before and during my wife's labor.  Carrie is a real life superhero in my book!

When hiring a doula, it was important to me to have someone willing to meet me at home for early labor.  Carrie was versatile and willing to either meet me at my home or at the hospital.  Ultimately, I didn't need Carrie to come to my home because my labor progressed relatively quickly, but she was accesible by phone and text during my early labor.  Overall, throughout the process, Carrie was very responsive to calls and texts and very supportive as I labored at home.

When I notified Carrie that I had arrived at the hospital, she arrived very quickly and worked to help get us settled in and my goals for my birth experience realized.  I specifically wanted a water birth, and Carrie worked to make that happen by running the bath and helping me labor in the bath by assisting in creating the environment I was striving for.  Carrie worked throughout my labor to make sure that I was getting what I needed without me having to ask for anything.  Carrie anticipated my needs and brought little extras that helped me through the labor - such as a rice sock and lip balm.

I also wanted a natural, unmedicated birth and Carrie's help through the process was essential to my achieving that.  She helped me with my breathing through contractions, even when I lost my focus and started to panic.  I really liked it that Carrie would let me know when things were happening and what that meant (i.e. that the table was being prepped, which meant they expected the baby to come soon) because it helped me to see the light at the end of the tunnel and to know that the labor was not going to last forever!  During all this time, Carrie took photographs and wrote notes so that I could have a record of the labor and birth, which was a really nice touch.  Additionally, Carrie helped my husband through the labor as well!

Carrie was a wonderful source of information, encouragement, and comfort for me (and my husband) throughout my pregnancy, labor, and recovery. We found her to be very knowledgeable, a good communicator, and highly conscientious. She is very open and non-judgmental and takes her cues from the mom while imparting helpful encouragement and insight. Icing on the cake – we really just liked her as a person. We would use Carrie'sservices again and would definitely recommend her to other moms seeking Doula services.

Carrie was perfect for the birth experience we were seeking. She took the time to understand our desires for the birth and came prepared to do everything she could to help us achieve it. Whether it was an iPhone app to time my contractions or a series of stretches to help the baby descend faster, she had a trick up her sleeve every step of the way. Her gentle, yet confident presence helped my husband and me stay calm and strong throughout the whole thing. The birth of our son is now one of our most treasured memories!

Carrie was very professional and enthusiastic throughout the pregnancy, labor, and post-labor. She always communicated quickly and efficiently, whether through phone or e-mail, including sending information about events related to pregnancy and labor. Carrie was warm and down to earth so my husband and I felt comfortable voicing concerns and asking specific questions. When I went into labor Carrie showed up promptly and stayed with us through the 30 hour labor, helping me and my husband as needed. She gave helpful techniques and support to aide with progression, discomfort, and fatigue. The atmosphere created was peaceful and supportive, even through communication with hospital staff so everything went as smooth as possible. Our labor was a positive, exciting experience with Carrie's involvement, including pictures and a detailed birth story. She visited a couple weeks after the birth to check in and offer more support and feedback. We were very happy with her services.
