My husband and I hired Hillary as an overnight doula for when we came home with our twins. She was a miracle. Truly. She came in and did laundry, fed and comforted our kids, baked cookies, and made food, all while my husband and I got a few hours of uninterrupted sleep. She was so loving and so kind to all of us. We adore Hillary and have recommended her to everyone. If we ever had more kids, Hillary would be our first call.
Hillary was exactly what I needed in a doula. I work in the childbirth/early childhood development industry, so I knew I wanted a doula before I was pregnant. I needed a doula that would be there to support me emotionally (as opposed to me being the support person/educator for my clients), as well as someone that could give my husband education and hands on techniques for someone starting from square one on childbirth knowledge. I loved Hillary's prenatal sessions. Her online tools and assessments targeted what we wanted to work on, and helped us cultivate a bond that made us all feel safe. During our actual birth, Hillary worked seemlessly with my partner, sister, and medical staff to give me the birth that I wanted. I completely credit her for my baby turning into the correct position for birth, and for my ability to have a completely unmedicated birth. The postnatal sessions helped me process my childbirth and was a lovely bookend for the whole experience.
As someone who works with pregnant and parenting people, I can say that Hillary will be there for any kind of birth. I was interested in natural childbirth, but Hillary was willing to support us with whatever happened in the delivery room, and talked about how she could support us if we chose/needed different kinds of medical interventions. Her online resource library is top notch, and she also pointed me towards multiple resources for cloth diapering, baby wearing, and breastfeeding. I highly recommend this wonderful doula.
One of the best decisions my husband and I made during pregnancy was to hire Hillary as our doula. As this was a first pregnancy and our first child, my husband and I were understandably nervous as to what the birth experience would entail. We wanted to ensure a calm, healthy and intervention-free delivery and Hillary helped us achieve that.
The night I went into labor, Hillary arrived at the hospital a few minutes after my husband and I did and sprung into action immediately. She knew I wanted the environment to be calm and she somehow managed to create a spa-like atmosphere in the middle of a hospital. She dimmed the lights, turned on a relaxing playlist, provided aromatherapy, fluids and - most importantly - a heating pad for my aching back. She supported, encouraged and talked us through labor and because of her quick thinking, helped us avoid a C-section. I truly believe I was able to deliver my son the way I wanted because of her ability to work with my midwives.
Hillary also provided us with the most precious gift - photos and videos of us meeting our son for the first time. I had no idea she was filming the first moment they laid my son on my chest and discovered it days later at home. I still cry every single time I watch the video.
Most importantly, Hillary was a huge support after we took our baby home. I was beginning to show signs of postpartum anxiety and so my husband reached out to Hillary who, in turn, called me right away. She provided me with a lactation consultant (breastfeeding was the source of my anxiety) and a hotline for PPA help. Because of her quick action and support, I was able to very quickly overcome my breastfeeding challenges and my anxiety disappeared days later. If it had not been for her, I feel as though I really would have struggled through those first weeks.
I would wholeheartedly recommend her - I can't imagine delivering any future babies without her by my side.
Hilary at HEART Birth & Baby is AMAZING! I recommend her to anyone considering a doula, regardless of the type of delivery you are planning. Hilary brings years of expertise with her and has a great approach to ensure parents are prepared for the birth and postpartum period; she meets twice before the labor and delivery to prepare, is with you on the big day and meets with you following the birth to make sure things are going well. The preparation meetings were incredibly useful in helping us with what to expect throughout the labor and delivery and the postpartum period, including breastfeeding which she had some great tips. Hilary was such a calm and knowledgable presence in the room during my labor and delivery. She brought her peanut ball, essential oils, sound machine and more in her bag of tricks. I loved how closely Hilary worked with my husband; texting/talking with him when I was in early labor to see how far along I was and how fast things were moving so I could focus on working through the contractions, working together to help me manage pain during contractions and even taking some great pictures at the end so we could focus on our new baby! Hilary is amazing and I already look forward to having her as my doula for baby #2.
I loved working with Hillary for the birth of my second child. I didn't use a doula with my first baby, and knew that I needed one to feel more in control the next time. I met with Hillary only once before the birth--we had two scheduled, but he came 4 weeks early and completely unexpectedly. Despite that, Hillary was really well prepared and so great to work with in that really stressful situation. I was able to have a completely drug free birth with no complications, and I thinking back to my first birth, I definitely know that this never would have happened without Hillary and her great mix of art and science.
When I found out I was pregnant, I discussed finding a doula with my husband. I knew from the beginning that I was not going to have many people in the room with me and my husband does not do well with hospital situations. Surprisingly, I had to really search for a doula. It was not easy to find them. All of the findings were through recommendations. I was really grateful that Hillary worked with another mom I knew and she was recommended. I was honest with her from the beginning that I really needed her for my husband and I wanted another advocate in the room with me. She put me at ease from the very beginning and I said that she will be there for everything I needed. I felt like she really wanted to give me a good experience and to make things easy for me and not have to worry about unnecessary things.
We met several times before the actual delivery and she had several recommendations that we could make us more knowledgable about the process. Even though I was nervous on how things were going to go on the day of, she made us feel better about contacting her whenever we had questions or needed her. When I knew the day was here, I was able to touch base with her and she met us at the hospital. She was with me the whole time and worked great with the hospital staff! I really appreciated that she was there because I am convinced I labored better because of her. The process was smooth and calm. Everyone was supportive of one another and it kept me stress free. I also really appreciated that she was watching over me the whole time which allowed me and my husband to sleep and save energy for the main event.
For being a first time mom, Hillary made all the difference in the world to me to have someone be my advocate and support my husband. I would not need to change anything about the process.
We had a wonderful experience using Hillary as our doula!! We weren't looking for someone to help us through a completely natural, unmedicated birth, so at first I didn't think I needed a doula. But I am so glad we decided to use her services! As a first time mom I had no idea what to expect from the whole labor/delivery.... and I'm admittedly not very good at reading up on things on my own. While we took a hospital birth class, it was so much more helpful to have the 2 prenatal visits from Hillary for really personal birth prep. She has wonderful resources and a super sweet but really fun demeanor about her. Even after I had an epidural, Hillary was super helpful in positioning me to help move my labor along, and was an amazing cheerleader when it came time for me to push.
We are looking forward to another postpartum visit from Hillary. I would absolutely recommend her!!
Hillary’s time spent with our family as a postpartum doula was a truly special experience. She came when our baby was 6 weeks old and entering a fussy stage that was at times confusing and overwhelming for first time parents. Hillary had such a calm and loving demeanor with our daughter and effortlessly showed us ways to soothe her. Hillary was such a help to me in the smallest and biggest ways from breastfeeding support, to accompanying me to grocery store, to helping prepare meals and do the dishes so that I could relax for a few minutes and focus on my baby. She enlightened us on things we didn’t even know we were doing incorrectly such as car seat safety and babywearing. I especially loved learning how to give our baby a spa bath! Before Hillary came our daughter didn’t enjoy bath time, but it is now a nightly ritual and one of her most favorite parts of the day. Another highlight of her time spent with us was learning about the wonderful world of cloth diapering. We didn’t consider it to be an option because we thought it was too much of a dirty hassle, but Hillary showed us how easy it was. I am saving hundreds of dollars because of this. The most invaluable part of Hillary’s services was the constant support she offered throughout the entire time she was there. She listened to my concerns about new motherhood with a compassionate, knowledgable, and open-minded ear and offered me validation and guidance in a gentle way that allowed me to come to my own conclusions. She was very knowledgable about all of my concerns and I respected the fact that she backed up her advice with showing me evidence based research. I didn’t realize how essential her services were until she left and I felt a million times more confident about being a new mom. Do yourself a favor and hire this vivacious, loving, brilliant, gal. She will prove her value from the first moment you meet her.
I don't know if the stars were aligned or it was just pure luck, but I am
so fortunate that I met Hillary and Erica. They are a powerful and compassionate duo! A perfect team and match for me and my husband. (And I met many doulas in my search.)I didn't settle for anything less than the best for us and for our journey to becoming parents.
I instantly knew they were wonderful doulas. They are great listeners. They were knowledgeable about the ups and downs of pregnancy, the birthing process and being parents. They helped as teachers and eventually as friends who helped guide and support me. They were fantastic! It took a little convincing on my husband's part but I reassured him that they would help in ways he couldn't have even imagined. And they did!
Hillary attended the birth of my son and I can honestly say that I couldn't have done it without her. After 10 days past my due date, I was scheduled to start on pitocin after my water broke. She met me and my husband at the hospital and stayed from start to delivery. She was beyond supportive! She helped me through those moments of agony when I thought I couldn't make it. She was reassuring and comforting to me AND my husband, who thought he could handle it all but then realized throughout those long 12 hours, that he could use a break/ support and reassurance too. My husband is now the best advocate for Hillary and doulas in general. The help was beyond definition. It was wonderful!
Thank you Hillary for sharing in one of the best and scariest moments of my life. You made it that much sweeter. My son's birth story is one that I now cherish and love to reminisce about because she helped make it one that I felt in control and active part surrounded by supprtive people.
Thanks Hillary! You're the bomb!
Pregnancy and the idea of giving birth was an exciting, joyful, frightening and anxious part of my life. Having Hillary as my doula got me through the frightening and anxious part. She is an amazing individual who is higly educated in her field. Basically any questions I had or didn't even know I had, she would have an answer to. When the DAY came and labor was starting Hillary was there every step of the way. She has a soothing demeanor a calming voice and outgoing personality, all of which contributed in giving me the strength to have an all natural birth. The coaching and breathing techniques were incredibly helpful through the most difficult part of labor and having her there was a great calm in an incredibly hectic time. My partner and I will forever be grateful to her! Love, Carolina, Frank and Luna!
I had more, but I'm limited to 2000 words! Last spring, I searched to find a doula for our first birthing experience. It’s a nuanced thing---finding the right person to go through this experience with you---and I sure what to expect. I thought I’d found that person, but she was booked. She recommended a couple of other doulas, and this is how I found Erica and Hillary, Doula Squad. I checked out their website and thought, “These ladies seem fantastic!.” And I love when I’m right! Once my husband and I met Erica and Hillary, we felt confident that these two women were the perfect choice. They were always attentive and intuitive, and quick to answer emails and texts. I can’t tell you how comforting this relationship was for me. My family is back west, so having these two women visit for the sole purpose of supporting me was really important. I also loved the positive relationship they had with my husband. I went into labor on a Sunday night. My husband talked to them while I labored at home throughout the night. When the time was getting closer, my husband and Doula Squad made the timing plan, and Hillary showed up at the hospital the same time we did. She was positive, affirming, gave me instructions on breathing, and continued to ask me how I was feeling. Simultaneously, she was communicating with my husband on more logistical matters. I’m also extremely grateful to her for the advocacy and attention that I couldn’t give myself: the attendant at the hospital had us sit and wait because it was my first and he assumed I was early in labor--- Hillary followed him and urged him to take us up. During labor, Hillary and my husband were by my side, giving me the encouragement, focus, and breathing pointers I needed. There were a couple of medical concerns during the birth (meconium pre-birth, and I hemorrhaged), and Hillary remained a constant support for us. We will definitely call on Erica and Hillary for baby #2!
Hands down, hiring Hillary and Erica as our doulas was the best decision we made in preparing for parenthood. First, we liked the fact that we got to know both before the big day. Most doulas have backups, but you often don't get a chance to meet them beforehand. We felt good about the fact that we knew them both and would have been in very capable hands regardless of whom we would have that day. Second, we really liked their outgoing personalities as well as their relaxed, yet professional and thorough approach to the preparation process. They were very easy to talk to, and we felt that we could (and we did) ask them anything. Lastly and most importantly, Hillary was amazing on the day of our son's birth. It was important to me to do a natural birth and she continued to encourage me throughout the process and helped me practice techniques that kept me going. I had to be induced because I was overdue and my fluids were low. And when my contractions started, I paniced a little bit and called her right away. She showed up within an hour and my labor lasted 20 hours. She went above and beyond to be there for me even through the early labor just so I would have her support and encouragement. She was also a great support to my husband. If we have another child, I wouldn't hestitate to hire Hillary and Erica again. We were very lucky to have them!

Hilary was an amazing doula for my labor and delivery. She is warm, kind, and so easy to talk to. She was there for me the moment my water broke by taking my phone calls, telling me to relax, calling me to check on my progress and meeting us at the hospital. She really helped me remain calm through the whole process. From laboring at home (for 12 hours), coaching me through my contractions, and getting me mentally ready to push. She also took AMAZING pictures right after Luke was born that we will treasure forever. She does beautiful editing and emailed them to me right away. Thank-you again Hilary for helping me achieve my goal of an unmediated birth. Your the best!!!
You need Hillary. She is an excellent balance of science and art which is very difficult to find in a doula. I was looking into hiring a doula for my December 2013 birth because I thought it would be nice to have extra support for myself and my husband. I knew I wanted a strong female presence, and I knew it would be nice to have a doula for my pregnancy journey. What I did not expect is that I NEEDED a Hillary for my birth. After a pretty smooth pregnancy, I ended up with an incredibly difficult labor experience. Even though I trusted my midwives and the hospital where I delivered, the slippery slope of interventions started piling up. Hillary was a constant reminder that we were allowed to take the time we needed to make decisions and that no one could pressure us into an intervention. Hillary reminded me that I was empowered to say no and to take my time. TRUST ME- when you are in labor, you and your spouse/partner are very vulnerable to suggestion and could EASILY end up with a birth that was less than what you wanted. Hillary and my husband worked very well together, and he really appreciated having her at the birth for "backup". Hillary was the protector of our birth plan, and for that I will be forever grateful. Additionally, she was wonderful support postpartum. My little man was born with some vascular problems, and Hillary continued to check in on me and lift my spirits while we were in the NICU.
Moreover, Hillary is super fun! Her prelabor visits were great and really helped us practice our coping techniques for the big day. She is very easy to connect with and her website full of resources rocks!
Hillary is an amazing, caring doula, and I hope to need her services again one day. :)
