After having a great experience with a doula with our first birth in another state, we knew we wanted to have a doula for the birth of our second daughter as well. Mary was a calm, steady presence for me through my birth but also before and after. It was very easy to talk with her, tell her my experience with my previous birth and ask her questions. She has so much experience and knowledge and was a great resource. Even my midwife knew of her and holds her in very high regard. She was always professional but also was there for our family in the way that we needed her to be.
We loved having Mary as our Doula and will be forever grateful for the many ways in which she supported our family. Mary is highly experienced, knowledgable, and professional. During the pregnancy, she took a lot of time to really understand my preferences for our birth experience and offered resources and tips to help me prepare. As my due date neared (and passed by!), we kept in touch and she expressed so much encouragement and faith in my abilities. When the day finally arrived, I remember texting her that I was in early labor. She responded, "You are going to do this Shannon, and you'll get to meet your baby!" I felt so supported already. Throughout the labor, she was a steadying presence for both me and my husband. She helped hold space and contributed to a calm, relaxed, and non-judgmental atmosphere, yet she allowed me to be my own advocate and follow my own preferences. I had an empowering, beautiful birth experience that I will treasure forever, something that I think was fostered by having the right support people in the room (Mary and my husband). I highly recommend her to anyone.
Going into my first pregnancy I knew I needed some extra help in addition to having my husband as I desperately wanted an all natural birth. We found Mary who came to our home for two prenatal visits and gave us a wealth of information so that we would be informed and educated participants in our birth. We learned more about pregnancy, childbirth and newborn care from my meetings with Mary than any class or book. Mary provided valuable resources as well as tips and tricks to help us have the birth we had envisioned. At these meetings, Mary provided me with exercises to help prepare my mind and body for the journey ahead.
During labor and delivery, Mary’s calming presence were exactly what my husband and I needed. Her nursing background came in handy when we needed to make decisions during labor and letting us know what the doctors were doing. During my labor and four hours of pushing she was a constant support checking in with me and being available to answer all our questions. We couldn't have planned a better birth!
