When I was pregnant with my first child I took a natural child birth class that Martha taught. She was easy to talk to right from the start, and funny too! I hadn't considered having a doula with my first baby, but I knew I wanted a natural birth. My daughter, however, had other plans! She decided to be breech and early, which meant an emergency C-section for me. Everything I hadn't wanted.
18 months later I was pregnant with my 2nd baby. I was determined to have a successful VBAC. I'm a very independent person and don't normally like to ask for help, but I knew I needed to call Martha. She was always available to answer questions, and when I told my husband in the middle of the night that it was time to call Martha, she was there. Both of my labors came on fast and hard. As my contractions got closer together, my husband and Martha timed them and decided that it was time to leave for the hospital. On the way to the hospital I knew this baby was coming soon. We made it inside and within two hours I had given birth without anything more than essential oils that Martha had brought.
I never really thought that I would need a doula (even after hiring one), until I was trying to push out my baby. At that moment, you need as many people in your corner as you can find. The hospital staff was good, but they were there to make sure that I was physically okay. Martha was there to make sure that I was mentally okay. I would recommend her to anyone in a heartbeat. Not only did she make me believe in myself when I had given up, but she took pictures after my son was born and captured moments that we will forever cherish.
I didn't know that my first birth experience wasn't a good one, until I had a great one. I don't know if it was the lack of drugs or the high from feeling so accomplished, but I was in a state of euphoria for the next few days. While my husband was sleep deprived and crabby, I was smiling at everyone and just so so happy. Thank you Martha!!
We had a wonderul experience with Martha as our doula from start to finish. She has such a relaxed personality, which helped me relax. We took her birth classes which were SO helpful when it came time to give birth. During labor, even in all that pain, I was able to access that information and tell myself "this is transition" and "you're in active labor" which I never knew even existed before her classes! Her classes were laid back and very informative. She was such a support when the delivery date came closer -checking in with me via text and email. She is so knowledgeable, I was able to ask her anything! Both of my births occured overnight. She hung in there with me for both births, keeping me centered, helping me breathe, encouraging me, taking laps around the hospital with me and calming me. My husband valued her presence so much. An extra set of eyes, ears, and hands was so helpful to him. Having Martha present at your birth will give you such peace of mind. We highly recommend her services.
Martha was a great support. During our first meeting she gave me a lot of good advice which I followed. On the labor day I texted her at 3 AM and she told me to call a doctor and the hospital- I didn't have a clue that I had to do it. My doctor wasn't supportive. I was with a family practice where one doctor was fine with Martha being there- the one that delivered my baby didn't like it. Why? Because Martha did everything to support me with natural delivery. I had a very long labor- 17 hrs. With each contraction Martha and my husband gave me a massage. Martha walked with me around the hospital for a half a day- the nurses where laughing saying that they have never seen such an active expecting mother. She helped me with ball excercises and finally with the best position to push. Martha brought the essential oils with her which helped me a lot. As the only pain relief I used pan-away.
If I had to do it again I would definitely hired Martha again. Thanks to her I had natural birth without any painkillers.
Also in the first week she visited us and pointed out that my baby doesn't letch properly. I was in a lot of pain and the baby was all the time hungry. She was right. I made a lot of mistakes which were corrected right away. Again neither my doctor or the lactation consultant didn't see anything wrong with the way she was letching.
Martha is a very kind and honest person. She is very helpful and genuine. She was born to be Doula- she loves baby so much!!!
It was such a blessing to have Martha at my second birth. Had she been there for my first, I’m sure I would’ve been able to avoid the Pitocin-epidural-episiotomy rollercoaster that took place after my labor slowed. My second birth was quite the opposite. Things progressed so quickly that we almost didn’t make it to the hospital! Thanks to Martha, I didn’t deliver my baby on the kitchen floor! I am not exagerrating. We sped to a hospital down the road instead of to the hospital where I was registered, which was a half hour away. Thirteen minutes after we pulled up, my baby was born! It was the craziest experience of my life, yet through it all Martha remained calm and she kept me and my husband calm. When the doctor (who wasn’t my doctor) insisted that I deliver in stirrups, Martha advocated for me and the doctor conceded. As the nurses yelled, “PUSH! PUSH! PUSH!” Martha calmly whispered, “just listen to your body and push when you’re ready.” Thank God for Martha! She even thought to bring a straw so that I could drink while on my hands and knees. Genius. Before the birth, my husband had been very skeptical about hiring a doula. He would ask, “is it really worth the money?” Immediately after our baby was born, he told everyone in our family how awesome the whole experience was and said, “she [Martha] was so worth the money!” I highly recommend Martha to any mother looking to deliver naturally. She provided oustanding support for me, my husband, and our 4-year-old son.
Martha has been our doula twice. We were very happy with her. We really appreciated he ability to work so well with us in having a 'natural birth' in the hospital setting -- knowing the details of setting and getting along very well with the nurses and doctors. She brings with her a depth of knowledge and experience. She is very flexible and intuitive as she works with the laboring mom and partner. She helped bring peace to our birth experience.
I recently had the pleasure of having Martha as my Doula for the second time, which was my third birth. I loved her work the first time and the second time! Martha had great insight when I was nearing the end of my pregnancy as I was 10 days overdue. She provided natural suggestions to help prep my body for delivery. When it was finally time, Martha came to my home. While laboring at home she offered a variety of accomdations and I also felt comfort knowing that she would suggest a good time to go to the hospital, as I had a hospital birth with a doctor. Martha pulled out lots of tricks of the trade while at the hospital. She used Essential Oils that helped my muscles, calmed and brought a nice presence to our room. She worked together with my husband, mother and hospital staff to create a supportive team and environment, respecting my wishes. Even at times when I was tired and going through transition and was struggling with long hours of pushing, she was still calm and I knew I could look to her for reassurance. Martha even took pictures after the baby was born to allow us to enjoy our newborn, so we didn't have to worry about capturing those special moments. I wish I would have had Martha with me for my first baby. I'm so thankful that I was able to have her with me for our 2nd and 3rd. If we are blessed with another baby, I will definitely have her by my side again sharing all of her knowledge!
First of all, Martha is amazing!!!
She taught a Bradley class which my husband and I took prior to our first born. She helped prepare my husband and I by educating us further about child delivery / labor.
Martha was there for the birth of two of our three children. Prior to labor, she was a constant positive support and help. There were many times I called her and she talked me down...they wanted to induce me with my third and I didn't want that. She came to our house and helped try to get things moving when I wasn't going into labor. Once I did go into labor, she was there during the beginning stages of labor, followed us to the hospital and stayed through the deliveries. While we were at the hospital, Martha came prepared with snacks, oils, and various strategies / techniques. She knows just what to do, how to keep you moving and stay focused while remaining calm and positive. With the help of her by my side, I was able to birth healthy, happy babies naturally. She also assisted with the beginning stages of breastfeeding. Finally, she followed up days after.
Marthanks and I remain friends. I am forever grateful for her.
Martha is a fantastic doula who was instrumental in my having a successful childbirth in spite of some complications. I also highly recommend her childbirth class over the one at the hospital. Martha is very responsive to questions via text. She gave wonderful tips during my pregnancy in her class, pre-birth consultation, and via text, about dealing with symptoms and how to prepare for the birth.
I wasn't sure I wanted a doula or a natural birth. But because I was an older mom with a history of pregnancy loss, my husband suggested we hire Martha to have an expert there to minimize risk and avoid possible complications that can come from using an epidural. The MFM specialist urged an induction because of the risk of stillbirth, but my induction went poorly. Martha ended up being with me in the hospital for literally 24 hours. She had fantastic resources to make the experience as enjoyable as possible, and got me through labor without using an epidural. She was amazing when the pain cand on strong. She worked beautifully with my doctor, my husband and sister, and the hospital staff. She's worth twice what she charges. I can't imagine going through labor without her.
Martha was also invaluable afterward, when I was having trouble breastfeeding and she came to my home to coach me. Thanks to her, I was able to stick with it and almost three months later, I am now finding it convenient and a special bonding experience with my baby, in addition to receiving the health benefits. And, Martha took 60+ amazing photos from the birth that we treasure! She was a huge blessing to my family and me, and I highly recommend her!
Until deciding to have a natural birth I had never even heard of a doula. After some research my husband and I thought it was something that we would benefit from but we both had our own reservations. I was worried that I would be uncomfortable with a stranger being a support person during such a vulnerable time and my husband was not sure we actually needed a doula. After meeting with Martha the first time I knew that I would be comfortable with her in the delivery room. She is extremely friendly and easy going. She uses her birthing knowledge to help her clients feel confident and positive about the birthing experience. I had a LONG induction and Martha was an absolute Rockstar. She helped me stick to my goal of an un-medicated birth. She really helped my husband during points that I was struggling so he was able to be of great comfort and support with her guidance. My husband now feels that having Martha at our birth was absolutely necessary and of great benefit. We will use her in the future should we choose to have more children. I would also like to add that all the hospital staff I had at Alexian was equally impressed with Martha's doula services.
I had my first baby 2 months ago and Martha was my doula. Every step of the way, she was a godsend: Having her as a resource throughout the end of my pregnancy was such a help and a relief--her practical and reassuring words of wisdom held at bay many a panicked moment after doctors appointments! And her presence throughout my labor was amazing, both for me and for my husband. The support she provided, her ability to interpret and read through the medical jargon of the nurses and doctors, the partnership she was able to provide my husband, and most of all, the confidence she instilled in me were what allowed both of us to power through to the best of our abilities. Even though things didn't go the way I had hoped and I did end up with a c section, I still feel positive about what was an incredibly empowering and beautiful experience, and I feel confident that the right decisisons were made because I had Martha there to guide me.
Choosing Martha as my doula for the birth of my second child was the best decision. I had a bad birthing experience which resulted in a c-section with my first born that had me worried about my OB care going forward. Martha was there to help me with over coming the loss I felt from that experience, helped me find a more suitable provider, and gave me comfort throughout the entire pregnancy regarding my fears with attempting a VBAC. She is extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of pregnancy; her birthing class is super helpful! I was able to reach out to her at any point (during pregnancy and post partum) to ask questions or get guidance. Martha has a sweet, compassionate personality. She has a calming presence. Although I was still nervous about my care provider, I found comfort knowing Martha would be by my side. She has quick response time, and arrived at the hospital right when I did (labor went quick so we decided I needed to leave for hospital asap). During labor and delivery, she was amazing at helping me through natural birth by literally holding me up during contractions, helping me stay focused and calming me down when I felt overwhelmed. She was an angel at my side, and took a lot of pressure off my husband too, who was overwhelmed with excitement! She thought of the things we didn't/couldn't, and I have beautiful photos of the event thanks to her! I could go on about her for days! Truly so grateful to have met and hired Martha!!
Martha was an absolute gift to my husband and I during the labor and delivery of 2 of our children. After an unexpected c-section with my first, we decided to hire Martha to support us in attempting a v-bac with our second. She was such a calm, positive, helpful presence throughout the process and I think we were able to do 2 successful v-bacs in large part due to her knowledge and support. Martha supports you and your desired birth plan while providing knowledge to help you make informed decisions before, during and after childbirth. We are so grateful to Martha and would highly recommend her doula services.
I knew I wanted a doula for my second birth because natural birth the first time around was more difficult than I expected. I really felt like I needed a coach to help me relax and remember to breath. I found Martha by doing a local search on Google, and then found her Facebook page. I thought all of her reviews looked promising so I reached out. Upon first meeting, I knew she would be the perfect fit. Martha is incredibly calm and easy to be around. I felt like she really listened to what I had to say. Throughout the pregnancy, Martha checked in to see how things were going and to make sure my birthplan was still the same. If I ever had any questions she got back to me right away. On the day of she met us at the hospital because my labor was going really fast. She did exactly what I was hoping for and more. She massage my back and shoulders with essential oils and really helped me focus on my breathing. I felt way less nervous having her by my side. Everything seemed so much easier having her there. If I ever have a third child, I will definitely use Martha again, and I would highly recommend her to anyone else.
My husband and I were expecting our first child in July 2014 and found Martha's childbirth classes through Facebook. I was a high-risk pregnancy and we wanted to be as informed about childbirth as possible so that I could have a natural and positive birth. Her classes were wonderful. We learned so much from them and looked forward to going every week! We also ended up switching obstetricians in my third trimester because I wasn't happy with the care I was receiving and we went with an OB that Martha recommended and love him! When I was in labor, Martha was very comforting, soothing, and helpful. We had a great experience and will definitely use Martha as our doula again. We truly believe that Martha was meant to come into our lives for the birth of our son- her classes, doula experience, and OB recommendation all lead us to a positive birthing experience and we are so grateful for her!
My husband and I are well-educated, savvy consumers. We were pregnant for the first time and were so excited to have the birth I had always dreamed of--as natural as possible. Destiny brought us together with Martha. I am typically an effective advocte for myself and had strong feelings about my birth plan but a wrench was thrown in our plans when I discovered that I was pregnant with spontaneous twins. Birthing twins seems to scare a lot of people and I was thrust into a world I had never imagined. Suddenly, I had very little say in birthing options and was feeling more disempowered by the minute (and each appointment with my -then- obgyn!). Martha was my knight in shining armor. She helped me find a doctor that had experience and comfort with natural births. She helped me prepare for the big day and helped me make each and every decision with a confident heart and calm mind that I cannot imagine existing without her. There is no way to explain the journey that is childbirth. But knowing that there was someone else in the room who knew my husband and I, understood our wishes and had seen so many other women through so many births...I felt like she leveled the playing field between the hospital staff and I (invaluable). She also made me feel not alone in my journey in labor (this is miraculous). My birthing story could have gone a million different ways and the way it did go is not of significance here; what matters in that moment, on that day, is that anxiety is kept to a minimum; mama and dada feel empowered and understood; and that you have a birth story you love to tell. Having a doula (any doula) is no guarantee, but having Martha is invaluable. Hands down, the best decision we ever made. Our boys are almost two now and we talk about it all the time: Thank God for Martha. I recommend her to every pregnant friend I have and will sing her praises until I can no longer sing.
We had the pleasure of being Martha's students before she was our doula. Martha teaches a natural childbirth class in Geneva, Illinois. Her class was incredibly helpful! It helped us have the healthiest pregnancy possible, prepare and understand labor and delivery, and help us make educated choices about the procedures our baby would/would not undergo. Martha's class was the best "baby prep" money we spent! Martha was an incredible doula. She kept in touch prior to my due date and was able to provide insights. Martha stayed with us for 15 hours and was prepared for much more. She was positive during the most trying moments, calm, and a knowledgeable resource. Martha provided ideas for laboring positions (that we had totally forgotten about!) and support for these positions as needed. She provided caring reminders of how best to handle the pain. Throughout it all, Martha was compassionate, non-judgemental, and never wavered in her positive outlook. We could not have had a natural labor without her! She helped me first breastfeed our daughter (which was much appreciated!). Martha followed up with us once we were home from the hospital and visited us too. She has provided insights and answered questions after the birth of our daughter as well. Martha is clearly dedicated to her job. We highly recommend Martha and plan on using her when we have baby #2!
I knew I would want a doula for the birth of my first baby, it was just a matter of finding the right fit. I had a very smooth pregnancy and I wanted a natural birth in a hospital (which people are so quick to exclaim how rare that can be). We knew a doula would be a wonderful advocate and an important part of our team. We interviewed a few and Martha was one of them; after about the first 15 minutes of meeting her I knew I would feel comfortable with her being our doula. Martha provided a strong, calm presence and offered her knowledge of different positions for me to try during labor, massage, getting me to eat during labor and above all emotional coaching. She helped me to stay on top of the contractions and remain calm throughout the entire birth. I never felt the need to even cry out. Having someone so confident and reassuring could not have been more important. She also helped us labor at home as long as possible while still getting me to the hospital in time to receive the 2 doses of antibiotics required since I had tested positive for the Strep B. I would recommend Martha for a doula any day; she helped make my dream of a natural birth a reality. I did not have any medical intervention for the birth of my baby girl, but I was able to be in the hospital just in case. Any mom and baby would be lucky to have Martha on their team. Thank you, Martha!
