My Husband and I credit Emily with our son’s birth being as low stress as it was.
As soon as I met Emily, I knew she was the right Doula for us. She is calm, confident, and warm. I didn’t have close and direct experience with pregnancy or birth, so I had about a million questions. Her knowledge is experience based and fact based. If she didn’t know the answer to my questions, she could refer me to other resources.
We loved attending her birthing class series. The format is informal and conversational. The materials provided are useful. The exercises and homework allowed my Husband and I to talk through possible decisions ahead of the heat of the moment.
Emily was a wonderful coach during my labor and birth. My Husband tells me she is very good at directly and indirectly leading the support person in ways they can be helpful and involved. She fully supported our preferences. She worked seamlessly with the hospital staff. I can’t imagine my birth without her support. I felt prepared for what my body was going through. Working with Emily put my fear of the unknown to rest.
There are many things I could say about my experience with Emily but I suppose the most important one is that she will forever have an integral place in our family‘s story. I will never think about the birth of our daughter without feeling so much gratitude that Emily was there to support us before, during, and after labor.
Emily possesses many strengths, but I found these to be most central to our experience with her: 1) She is incredibly knowledgeable. Though we desired a low-intervention birth, we ended up with an induction with all the bells and whistles. Emily provided so much context to help us understand the medical jargon in the moment. I relied on her to tell us when we had choices and trusted that she would help advocate for us. She explained, in a non-biased way, virtually everything that was going on. Because we also took Emily’s birth classes, we were much better prepared for the experience; very little caught us off guard but when it did, she was there to provide understanding. 2) She is incredibly calm and seemed never to get her feathers ruffled. Birth is a messy, sometimes chaotic experience with high highs and low lows. Emily was the picture of calm and brought forth that calm, peace, and compassion, especially as she provided hands-on coaching through contractions. Birth was the most physically and mentally vulnerable experience of my life, and I never felt awkward or embarrassed around her. I felt incredibly safe in her presence.
My husband was unfamiliar with the concept of a doula, but we both agreed that the investment was incredibly worthy and one we would make again. I simply can’t imagine becoming a mom for the first time without Emily there. It’s also worth noting that she provided a well-rounded arc of an experience, with meetings before the birth and a debrief after, and clear communication along the way. I wholeheartly recommend her in every capacity. She’s amazing!
We had such a wonderful birth experience with Emily by our side as our Doula! The birth classes were excellent. We did the four part Saturday morning group series and the material covered everything we ended up needing to know for birth and early infant care. Emily met with us twice in our home to talk through our birth plan, answer questions, and give us more information. She had experience with St John’s and was able to answer hospital specific questions (do they have their own birth balls? How many people can be in the room? Etc.) We planned to have her labor with us at home first, but our labor ended up going so quickly she met us at the hospital instead. She provided continuous support, advising us on our options and providing her recommendation when requested. She was also a great communicator with our waiting family. She was available when we needed her, but also blended into the background and didn’t impose on our family time. One of my favorite things is that she took the most beautiful pictures of transition and pushing, including sweet pictures of my husband and I and the first picture of our new screaming daughter. I cherish these! I wholeheartedly recommend Emily as a Doula and childbirth educator and would do it all again!
Emily was the perfect doula for me during my child birth. She is so pleasant and made me feel so relaxed and at ease. I was looking for a doula who would make me feel safe and confident during the birth but also before, during the pregnancy. Emily did just that. She has great knowledge and experience about the whole pregnancy and the woman's body and could answer any question i had. During the birth, she was so helplfull with the pain, pressing on all the right spots on my back and she just knew what to do without me asking. She also gave me and my husband the space we needed and didn't interfere when she felt we needed to be just us. That was so important for me! I had a great experience with Emily and I definitely recommend her as a doula!
I have absolutely no regrets in hiring Emily - both as our Doula and our childbirth class instructor. Starting out, my husband and I had no idea what to expect in labor and delivery. We knew we wanted to have a positive experience but we didn’t know how to even start a birth plan. Emily helped us figure out what we were looking for by educating us on the entire process and answering our questions. She is very knowledgeable yet passes no judgement and does not push any opinions or beliefs. One of my favorite aspects about Emily’s knowledge base is that she is both open minded and also very evidence based. She’s got lists of credible sources of information. It was well worth the additional cost to take her childbirth class. Apart from her resourcefulness, Emily is the perfect mix of kind, calm and reassuring. Her presence in the L & D room kept us sane and grounded. I was able to relax more than I thought possible knowing that she was there to answer questions and help us make choices that best suit our family. She goes above and beyond to cater to your specific needs whether they be geared towards a natural birth, a medicated birth, or even a caesarian. I truly believe that she cares deeply for all of her clients. Without a doubt, we will hire her again for our next baby.
Emily was a wonderful doula. We would recommend her to anyone looking for a doula our experience was so good! I felt incredibly supported before, during, and after birth. Emily provided excellent emotional and physical support, knowing just what to say and what to do. I had a fantastic birth experience, upon which I will look back my entire lifetime. It would not have been the same without Emliy. I really can't say enough positive things about her.
My husband and I chose Emily as our doula and also attended her 6 week childbirth class. My pregnancy was very smooth and uneventful which resulted in me assuming that childbirth would be similar. I could not have been more wrong! For me, the reality of the birthing process turned out completely opposite from what I had planned and hoped for. The process was long, frustrating, and both mentally and physically exhausting. Emily was with us every step of the way. Her unwavering love and support made all the difference in maintaining a positive outlook/atmosphere during a series events that could have very easily fostered a lot of negativity and hopelessness. We had a lot of choices to make when planning the birth of our son and choosing Emily as part of our team was undoubtedly one of the best choices we made. Because of Emily I feel extremely positive about my experience giving birth. Without her, I would not feel this way.
I've read loads of testimonials for doulas over the past few years as I've had baby after baby, all in different cities. It's likely that you, the proactive, educated, caring parent-to-be, are skimming these looking for the things you're hoping to hear. Here are my highlights; hope this helps:
As a customer, you can expect easy online scheduling and swift responses to e-mails and calls. Emily's philosophy is evidence based, and she's constantly learning. She is efficient, organized, and clear in her communication. She's experienced and truly passionate about her work. "Thorough" doesn't even begin to cover it. Come Hell or high water, she is going to discern the exact kind of support you and your partner want/need, and then she will be there to provide it.
As a pregnant/laboring woman, you can expect Emily to be warm, calm, and easy going. You'll have loads of time together to get comfortable ahead of the birth. My personal experience (second VBAC) with her in the room includes her making quiet, affirmative sounds just for me to hear as I worked through contractions. She provided counter pressure on my sacrum, answered questions for both me and my partner, and gently made suggestions that immediately improved my experience.
As a fresh parent, you can expect a post-partum ninja. She's here giving me water, she's there checking on my partner, she's taking pictures, she's back with the water, she's checking on baby's latch, she's laughing and marveling right along side us as we come to terms with our new reality.
The bottom line is there are absolutely other wonderful doulas available, but they aren't Emily.
Emily is a wonderful doula! She has such a knack for normalizing pregnancy fears and concerns and explaining options without agenda. Never once did I doubt I was heard, and never once did I feel pressured or judged. I joked after meeting her that she is "the nerd's doula." She is super intelligent to match her kind spirit and nature. She is well-informed and full of great referrals for adjunctive care during preganacy and postpartum. She is also the consumate advocate during delivery. My sweet twins were breech, necessitating a C-section, and she was a rock star in letting me know what to expect and empowering me in making informed decisions regarding my care. And her pre-op foot rub was just what I needed to stay grounded and relaxed. She is flexible, attentive, supportive, and (I'm biased) a must as part of your birth team!
When we became pregnant, I knew that I would want a doula at our birth. My husband, a registered nurse, was not quite as certain about the need. After our second childbirth class with Emily, though, he was sold. After having her at the birth, he and I both proclaimed that we wouldn't have known what to do without her! Emily is professional and knowledgeable, putting her clients at ease during childbirth. She was able to provide many options for pain management and great encouragement throughout the labor and delivery. As an extra bonus, Emily also provided exceptional care for my husband...grabbing him coffee, getting snacks and making sure that he was an active participant. My labor was not textboo...so having Emily always there allowed us to journey through the uncertainties and the unpredictable waves of labor. I'm grateful that Emily is a part of our birth story!
Emily's experience, compassion, and expertise are far beyond my capabilities to place into proper words. Her constant presence at the bedside throughout labor and delivery provided a memorable and empowering birthing experience. Affirming words and options were both reassuring and goal oriented. While Emily's main focus was assisting my wife through the challenges of labor, she was also quite attentive to my desire to be an active participant by providing space and direction when needed. The benefits of this level of care greatly enhanced the already present joy of the miracle of life.
Emily was amazing to work with. As a first time mom, I was very selective in who I trusted with the care of my pregnancy, birth, and ultimately my little one. Emily is very caring, authentic, and knowledgable. I truly feel she is the perfect combination of being well educated on all things pregnancy/birth while also being very caring and intuitive to what mamas need. I highly recommend her services (all of them; birth class, massage, and doula). It was SO beneficial to have her on our side throughout our journey! A completely priceless experience!
From class to the birthing room, Emily was a calm and steady presence in our lives. We couldn't have asked for such a wonderful partner through the process of having our first child. A simple recommendation doesn't seem to be enough for the amount of time and care she gave to our new family. Emily patiently listened to our plans, helped us articulate more clearly what we wanted, educated us on things we didn't know were even options and was supportive no matter our decisions. Our birth didn't go exactly as planned and we were so grateful to have a knowledgeable and compassionate support person in the room helping us navigate tough choices when you are at your most vulnerable. Hiring Emily was the single best thing we did to prepare for labor, delivery and parenting. We're forever indebted and will continue to have Emily as a part of our lives.
Emily was so indispensable at my birth. I truly believe I would not have been able to give birth naturally without her help in both being there and the class she teaches birthing with confidence. Where I took the class to be more knowledgeable and feel better prepared for birth, the true gift was just as the name suggest. I was confident in my own ability and my body to do what it is supposed to do. Whenever birth is portrayed on tv it is usually screaming women. That coupled with the constant talk of how much pain it is and literally being told by multiple people (including hospital staff in my tours) that once I started labor I wouldn't be able to withstand the pain and would abandon my desire for a natural birth, the whole process was starting to appear more than daunting to me. The class gave me the confidence and security I needed to have the birth I wanted. Athough it doesn't feel like a day at the park, I am so glad I experienced every second of the power my body has. Women are incredible! On top of the class, Emily being my own doula during labor was the best decision I made. She is someone that cares so whole heartedly about you and ensuring you receive the care you want, both from the hospital and family in the room during labor. It was so nice to rely on her expertise whenever I couldnt think through all my options clearly and had issue recalling different positions to try when the strength of the contractions increased. I still am so grateful to her for being a part of such a vulnerable and intimidating time. She is a beautiful person and am so happy to have known her! I recommend her class to every pregnant couple - absolutely jam packed with information. And if you are considering having her as your doula, definitely 100% do it! Lastly, my pregnancy was really hard on my hips and ribs, and the way I first met her was by having one of her prenatal massages - it was so worth the cost and relieved a lot of the pain and stiffness I was experiencing.
I'm not sure how I would have made it through my birth experience without Emily there! I was trying for a VBAC in a city that isn't very VBAC friendly, and she provided valuable information and encouragement throughout the pregnancy, giving me confidence that I could have a successful vaginal birth. In the birth room, Emily was a calming, strong, and intelligent presence, helping me to cope with extremely painful back labor, and continually helping me to try positions that would encourage the baby to turn anterior (thus stopping the back labor). She was a true professional when it came to liaising with the nurses, communicating to them what I wanted when I was unable to. In the end, I was able to experience an amazing, intense vaginal birth, and I have no doubt that Emily's assistance throughout labor helped me to achieve that goal. I highly recommend her to any woman who wants a truly lovely, reassuring, and knowledgeable advocate with her during labor. I can't thank Emily enough for her kindness and skills before, during, and after my son's birth. She is also an incredible prenatal masseuse, and I credit her pressure point massage with helping start my labor (in fact, I had the bloody show in the bathroom of her office suite the day I went into labor).
Having Emily as a doula was truly invaluable for my wife and I. Emily is not only knowledgable and an expert in her field but also has a gift for being genuine, honest, and sensitive which allowed for us to immediately place our full trust in her from the very beginning. It was like we had known her for many years before. We gained confidence and knowledge from her intimate class as well as through her one on one meetings. Emily is always engaged and has the ability to listen to us and our concerns and needs and also not impose her own will. She helped to curate our ideal birth plan. Emily not only deeply cares for all of her clients, but has an evident and infectious passion for what she does. Emily made our birth, and in turn our life, so much easier. This was our first birth and we were able to find a comfort and less stress of the unknown once we hired Emily, knowing we were in such good hands. I, as the father, was able to go into our birth feeling confident, educated, and able to contribute to help my wife through the birth. Emily also was immensely helpful for my wife during nursing. We are so thankful to have her in our life and our baby's life and recommend her services to any and everyone who is expecting.
I am so glad we choose Emily as our doula. I am very appreciative of her suppport, guidance and compassion for the birth of my son. Having her present really helped us make the best decision for me and my son. I'm so happy that she was in the OR with us. I know having her there provided my husband with a great sense of calmness. I loved the pictures she took and the support she provided me during the c section. She helped me advocate for myself so that i could have the most peaceful cesarean as i could, and i am so grateful for that. It really allowed me to experience the birth. I very much enjoyed working with her and thanks to her i was able make a well informed decision that gave me peace with my birth. Emily created an environment of calmness and support and helped create a wonderful birth experience for me and my husband. i would definitely recommend her as a doula and would encourage everyone to having a doula present during their birth. i didnt use one the 1st time and i feel if i had it would have been a very different experience if i had. i loved having the support she provided and the feeling of having control over this birth unlike my 1st. i also loved how she continued to check in on me and family as we adjusted to life with another son. i lalso loved how helpful she was with with any of breastfeeding questions i had.
Looking back at our very difficult birth experience over 36
hours long, with many medical interventions we did not plan on I cannot imagine how we would have had our daughter without Emily Landry. Emily stayed with us the entire time providing invaluable support, knowledge, and comfort. She was able to massage my wife helping her through some of the more intense birth waves (contractions). She was especially helpful to me as a new dad answering questions and creating space for my wife, family, and I to feel as comfortable as possible. Emily connected with my wife and established a strong sense of trust that we were able to lean on when we needed it. She was and still is available over the phone, via email and text, and willing to conveniently chat in person before, during, and after the birth if our sweet daughter. I highly reccomend Emily as a doula for anyone expecting!
Emily was our doula for a midwife-led birth center birth. Our whole experience with her was always professional, warm, and joyful. It was comforting during labor knowing that she was there for my husband and me- even a simple smile and "you can do it" or "beautiful" kept me going. She is such a centered and intelligent woman and I would use her again in a heartbeat!
Emily was so incredible during my pregnancy and birthing experience that, without a doubt, I would recommend her (and have recommended her) to anyone!
Emily is calming and thoughtful. She is easy going and caring. She is considerate of feelings and choices. She is a wealth of knowledge and provides information without judgement. She is positive and encouraging. Emily has a beautiful energy and you can tell she loves what she does.
When I first got pregnant, I really didn't know what a doula was, but as the months of pregnancy continued, I heard a lot of people talking about doulas. So, I reached out to friends and everyone said how important a doula was, how it was the best the decision they made (etc.) So, we began doing research and looking into to hiring one.
A friend had given me a gift certificate for a prenatal massage and said I should go to Emily, that she was great (and she was.) When I was looking into doulas, that friend told me Emily was doula. I knew she would be a perfect right away. But still we met with other doulas, just to compare and see - but none gave me the same instant feeling, and once my husband met her, we knew she was the one.
Now my birthing experience was nothing that I had planned or hoped for, but having Emily there made all the difference. My water broke without actively going into labor so after 30 hours of no real sign of change, we had to make the decision of a c section. Emily helped us make the decision and talked it out. She listened and understood when I broke down crying. Emily was with us all along. She stayed up late and slept by the machines to keep them from continually beeping as well as reading the information. She fed me ice chips after the surgery while my husband was with our son. She was a good compaion and extremely helpful. . . and I still tell people that the best memory of my birth was the 45 minute foot rub she gave me, to relax me, when the contractions were not as strong.
Having Emily as our doula was a huge help and comfort to me as a first time Dad. Her professionalism, knowledge, and communication are excellent. Just as importantly, she is a very sweet and warm person who is easy to talk to, laugh and cry (happy) with. Her calm, clear and comforting manner made the entire experience much more manageable to me as a husband. She is a pleasure to work with. You will be happy you chose her.
Emily brought so much wisdom and experience to our birth, pregnancy and post-partum period. She is very grounded and I always feel better just being around her. Emily helped us prepare for the birth by asking us thoughtful questions, listening carefully to our hopes, fears, and values, and committing our birth plan (and associated contingency plans) to heart.
Emily is also a massage therapist and she includes a wonderful prenatal massage in her package. During labor, her touch and her presence were so very helpful. She and my husband were such a great team - 95% of the time, it was just the three of us, with very little need for our wonderful midwife to do anything. Emly also helped my husband by staying with me while he took a nap, taking turns pressing my sacrum and supporting my belly during every single contraction, and bringing us food and drinks.
Emily also came to stay with me when I thought I was in labor (it was a false alarm) and I needed someone to keep me company and go for a walk (and up and down lots of hills and stairs) in the middle of the night. She was such a good sport about our "dress rehearsal" and I think it helped all of us gear up for the real thing a week later.
We will definitely ask Emily to be our doula again when we have our second child. She's absolutely wonderful.
My husband and I had the pleasure of having Emily Landry as a doula for the birth of our first child. Emily came highly recommended and we were very happy with her services. Emily is very open-minded, flexible, emotionally grounded, compassionate and calm. My labor and delivery did not go excatly as planned (not surprsing!) and Emily was able to switch gears and support me as the events unfolded. She was a calm and constant presence through my labor and delivery which gave me a great sense of safety and comfort. Emily worked very well with my husband, they were an awesome team! Both our pre-natal and post-natal appointments were very informative and helpful.
I was lucky to have Emily by my side in what can be a scary, emotional and exhilerating experience! I would highly recommend Emily as a Doula for any expectant Mom who needs some additional support through her pregnancy, labor, delivery and postpartum period.
Brian, Emily & Baby Lola
Emily is a unique birthing doula as well as a special individual. Without her I truly believe I wouldn't have been able to give birth! She supported not only me but also my partner in the emotional roller coaster of birth, managing our emotions, fears, excitement and joy.
Emily was extremely dedicated, calm, and made us feel, as much as possible, at home and that everything is under control! My labor was very long. But she was there the whole time, from beginning to end. Being a massage therapist, Emily used many techniques to help me overcome any pain and discomfort and made my environment playful, calm, and safe.
10 reasons why Emily is wonderful!
When we first met Emiily, we knew she was going to our doula. She exuded warmth, compassion and calm- exactly what first time parents-to be needed.
She consistently addressed our concerns with evidence and anecdotal details that eased our fears and anxieties.
She met with us twice before our daughter's birth. Each visit addressed different needs. The 1st was a general information session about her services while she assessed our needs. The 2nd one was more hands- on, about learning and practicing pain management, a continuation of surveying our needs/wishes, and developing a birth plan.
Months prior to our daughter's due date, she warned us of a conflict in her schedule two to three weeks prior to her due date. We hired her despite this conflict- we were hoping that a first baby would arrive late. Emily arranged for us to meet her back up doula and we all met to discuss the possible transition.
Emily was in constant contact with us via email and phone.
Within a few days of meeting with the possible back up doula, Emily informed us of a change in her schedule- we were being told by our drs to prepare for a possibe induction and Emily's conflict in her schedule fell on the same day. Emily made herself available for the big day-she did not feel right about missing the induction.
In our 31 hr induction, Emily provided the needed calm, experience, hands-on suppprt and guidance for all of us, she held all of our hands.
Post birth, Emily met with us to check in and offer resources for lactation support and continued to follow up with information about support groups.
AFter our daughter was born, my husband said, "Now I understand why doulas exist."
Did I mention: she is a massage therapist and provided great relief to the icky prenatal pains!
Emily was a wonderful support to me and my husband during my very long labour. She was a very calming and reassuring presence during the labour and her massages throughout were amazing.
She was also a great resource in the lead up to delivery and was happy to answer any questions that we had at any time.
I would highly recommend her services!
