I recommend Deb with the highest regard. After suffering PTSD from my firstborn’s birth, my midwife suggested Deb for my second pregnancy.
At our first meeting I felt calmed by Deb's knowledge and confidence. She validated my first birth story and took my concerns seriously, which made me feel like I was heard and validated, while also giving me tools for how I could approach this birth in a different and healthy way.
In labor Deb had an excellent sense of when to step in and when to step back. She has the ability to read a mother’s needs without needing to ask. She found an excellent balance with my husband while I was in labor so each could support me in ways that played to their individual strengths. When I experienced hip pain from posterior positioning, Deb worked my hips and was able to successfully turn my baby within minutes. As active labor intensified, Deb offered numerous ideas for positioning and pain management. She honored all choices I made, and worked with me to help make my choices as effective as possible. I felt in control of my experience and empowered by those who were there to support me.
Deb’s rapport with the hospital staff was lighthearted and respectful, and it felt like they all worked together as a team to enable me to birth my son peacefully. My birth story is an unremarkable one in its ordinariness- no complications or interventions, and manageable pain that was quickly forgotten. Deb’s skills were a significant contributing factor that led to a type of birth experience I had hoped for.
Deb went above and beyond to help make my transition to motherhood as smooth as possible. I am forever thankful for her services.
Deb is FANTASTIC! I cannot speak highly enough of Deb's services. We used her for the birth of our son and she helped make our birth experience much less stressful. Being a first time mom and never having gone through labor can be intimidating, but with Deb there she made me feel calm and in control. She also helped ease my pain, I had been having lower back discomfort in the beginning of my labor and when she came over she noted that the baby was anterior facing which was causing me so much lower back pain. So she laid her hands on me and roated my hips which helped to reposition the baby and my pain was GONE! She was also a necessity during my labor at the hospital. She was not afraid to "get her hands dirty" and help the nurses. She also gave me different to use to move labor along that the labor and delivery nurse did not know how to utilize like the squat bar. She also helped to give me techniques to not push when our doctor was not yet in the building and I "was not allowed" to push. She also provided help and reasurance to my husband throughout the whole labor and delivery process. I will use Deb for every one of my future pregnancies and deliveries and I would recommend her to all of my friends and family!
Deb is pure magic. While I could write at least 5 pages of why I recommend her to all my pregnant friends, I'll highlight my top 3 reasons.
1. Her resourcefulness and experience
After a crazy long and mildly traumatic labor with my firstborn, my husband and I made it a priority to find a doula to help us for our daughter's birth. We loved Deb and her approach to labor; she believes in honoring the woman's ability to birth naturally but recognizes the need for intervention when necessary. Because of who she is and all her experience, Deb kept the energy light and calm during our labor. She always knew how to support me - physically, emotionally, and spiritually - through the process. I've actually told people that I was able to have fun birthing my daughter because I was so affirmed by Deb through it all.
2. Her skills in fascia massage
I had back labor with my firstborn and when I found out my daughter was sunny side up, I was anxious. Deb reassured me she would "fix" that when she met us in the birthing center, but I was very doubtful. When the hour came, and she arrived, Deb gave me a facia massage. I'm not crazy in tune with my body but I felt my daughter completely flip around right after Deb said, "Okay, here we go!" I don't know how she does it, but it's magic and I'm a believer.
3. Her faith in God
When looking for a doula, I wanted someone who could empower me but with the Word of God. With my first labor, I relied on my strength alone and it was not enough. With Deb present for my second birth, and specifically during the pushing phase when I told her I couldn't go any further, she blessed me with Isaiah 40 and my daughter was in my arms 3 pushes later.
Deb was such a blessing and an essential part of our beautiful birthing experience. As long as she's willing, I'm calling her up for all my future pregnancies ??
You know when someone is without compare and such a helpful, happy part of your life that you feel you’ll fall short while explaining them to someone else? Well that’s Deb the Doula. So lets just say in our family Deb Lawrence is 5 stars across the board the best doula we have met and have used. When she retires we will be done having children ha ha… because my husband and I are convinced we couldn’t do it without having an expert like her.
Deb exceeded our expectations for labor support. She literally breathed with me through contractions, taught me vocalization techniques and did them with me. Somehow she helped me relax when pain was unbearable and mentally take me to another place to allow my mind and body to do what it knows how to do. She has unlimited techinques for pain and just labor positions. With my son I ended up squatting and she just was so helpful to figure out exactly what we needed. She advocated for everything I wanted when I couldn't think and or talk ha ha, even to my own husband. How can she read him and read me and know what I needed? Magic, probably. We are forever grateful for the way Deb TIRELESSLY has supported us during labor and pregnancy. Our most recent delivery was about 20 hours and Deb was literally a powerhouse the entire time of positive energy. She is necessary during birth. She is extremely kind-hearted, patient, helpful, caring, nurturing, is full of light-hearted jokes at all appropriate times. At one point (I’m talking like 17 hours in) she sat bedside with me while giving my husband time to nap and just chatted with me stories about her children. She has great boundaries, knows when to step in and step back.. She isn’t afraid of speaking up if needed but in the most loving way possible. She is an incredible person and I am thankful for you!
What an incredible experience I had with Deb as my doula for the birth of our third child in Dec 2015. Everything about her made me calm and gave me peace - and that was just during our contact before the birth. At the birth she never left my side, engaged me in fabulous and distracting conversation while I was waiting for thing to kick into hear, power-walked with me around town for an hour, and didn't bat an eye when I insisted on deboning a chicken in active labor. Then, she gently ordered me into the birth tub when she heard me making pushy sounds even though I was in denial, and seamlessly faded in and out as needed after the birth as my husband and kids came and went. Deb brings with her an incredible calm that helps balance out the highs and lows of labor. She is game for anything, knows what's needed even if you don't, and reminds me of the energizer bunny that just keeps going and going and going. Deb's vast experience that spans decades means that her role as doula comes as second nature. I cannot recommend her enough; she is worth every single penny and more.
Deb is a fantastic doula! When I first started working with her, I didn't yet know if I wanted a natural or medicated birth, and she was happy to support my decision-making process. I settled on natural childbirth, and Deb was very affirming of my choice without making me feel as though I couldn't change my mind later. She was really helpful in helping me know what to expect during labor. She gave us ideas of things to try even before I went into labor, and she was able to recognize and adjust the baby's position. Deb's support of me and help for my coach was incredibly important. We stayed home and I labored in our bathtub for most of the time. Deb helped me through vocalization, visualization, reassurance, encouragement, etc... She helped me find positions that were most comfortable for me, and she reminded me to drink plenty of fluid (with sugar). She also helped me know when it was time to go to the hospital (I arrived at 9cm). Once at the hospital, Deb helped me to continue to stay "in the zone," as well as ensured that the staff followed my birth plan to the best of their ability. That was really helpful -- I felt safe and taken care of, so I could focus on the labor process. She also helped me figure out which positions might work best for pushing -- giving different ideas until I was pushing most effectively. After the birth, she took pictures and videos with my camera, so my husband and I could just enjoy the first moments with our daughter -- I'm so glad she did this (especially the video she took right when I got to hold my baby for the first time)! Then she stayed with us for several hours after, helping me to use the bathroom, get settled, etc.
Deb was absolutely incredible. Her insight, experience and gentleness combined to make an incredible birth experience that I will never forget -- and when I'm ready for another baby, I'll be calling Deb to join us for that one, too.
