This was our first birth, and my husband and I were not going to have a duola at first, but then we decided it would be important for us. We seriously lucked out that at 8 months pregnant, Dorothy had availability around our due date. Even though our time was limited, she made sure to fit in our prenatal visits and lent us helpful books and videos. She also was extremely important in helping us to draft our birth plan. So our due date came and went...then the next week...then just a day before 42 weeks, I finally went into labor....I was having exceptionally bad back labor, so that plus our late gestation and bad roadwork between us and our birth center/hopital led us to to go in earlier than we hoped. Dorothy met us there and stayed with us for about 30 hours of what was a 37 hour labor! Dorothy is a superwoman...she never slept in order to make sure both my husband and myself had her support at all times. She was so critical to our experience...she helped to both support me and my husband in so many ways. She helped me to walk around when I could, work through contractions, control my breathing, and so much more. We ended up delivering our beautiful little girl vaginally with no problems for mom or baby. Dorothy was able to get some great pictures and a short video at delivery to help us remember this special time. At the postpartum visit a couple weeks later, she went over the birht with us and how we felt about how things turned out. She also was kind enough to give us a birth log and our birth story from her point of view as well as a cute hat and headband for our baby that she made herself! Neither my husband nor myself could have imagined going through this experience without Dorothy, and we just hope she is still in our area when we decide to have our second child. We HIGHLY recommend Doula Dorothy!!!
I don't know what we would have done with out Dorothy as our doula! She was such an amazing part of our birth experience. We were first time parents away from all of our family and friends because of our military move. Having dorothy's support and also knowing that she could sympathize with our situation was so comforting. We loved our visits with Dorothy leading up to the big event and got so much information from them. From all the information we received at our visits and from Dorothy's lending library, we felt stress free and ready for our daughter's birth.
Dorothy was so reassuring when we found out that our birth wasn't going to be exactly as we had pictured/planned. (induced at 41weeks and 5 days) We still managed to have an amazing pain medication free birth with Dorothy's help. Dorothy stayed after the birth to make sure everything was okay and to help with breast feeding.
About a wk later we had our postpartum visit with Dorothy were we discussed our birth and read the beautiful birth story that she wrote for us. We would love to have Dorothy as our doula again!
My husband and I were so fortunate to have Dorothy as our doula. As first-time parents, we didn’t know what to expect with the birth experience and had some worries and questions leading up to it. We knew we wanted a doula, but didn’t realize just how invaluable Dorothy would end up being! She was both professional and personable, easing our fears and directing and helping us throughout the entire process –leading up to the big day and through the birth itself. Passionate and extremely knowledgeable, Dorothy took the time to get to know us and our desires and offered incredible insight on every aspect and concern.
When my birth didn’t quite go as planned (our baby was born three weeks early with an induction after my water broke days before and I tested GBS positive), Dorothy was just as unruffled and calm as ever, helping me to a safe and epidural-free birth against the odds. She worked in coordination with my husband and the nurse and midwife to best minimize my pain and help the labor progress at a good pace – she knew the issues that were present and strived to minimize them as best as possible. And after the birth, she continued to provide insight, helping with the initial moments of skin-to-skin and following up with us to discuss the birth (and give us pictures from the event and a beautiful birth story). Dorothy was an amazing support to our family before, during, and after the birth, and we cannot recommend her enough!
I am so glad I hired Dorothy as my doula for the birth of my son. Even though my plan for a natural child birth took an unexpected turn (I ended up needing a c-section) Dorothy was there every step of the way. My husband and I really enjoyed our meetings with her beforehand and felt she provided us with alot of information and knowledge that made us feel better prepared for labor and delivery. Before my surgery, I made it to 7 centimeters dilation without drugs and with ALOT of support from Dorothy. I am surprised I didn't break her hand from squeezing it so hard!! By having her there, my husband was able to take a few breaks which was very helpful. Dorothy was so calm and motivating, she definitely helped me stay focused during my contractions. It was also nice to have her in the operating room, she was able to keep me informed of how my son was doing after birth since my husband didn't want to leave my side.
Dorothy took some awesome photos which she began taking as soon as we got to the hospital and she wrote a very thorough and eloquent birth story that we will be able to share with our son someday. She also stayed with us in the post-op room for awhile and helped with breast feeding which was comforting to me since I was a little overwhelmed from the whole experience of labor and surgery. I would definitely reccomend Dorothy as a doula to anyone who is considering using one!
Dorothy was an incredible part of our birth experience. I felt a connection with her from day one, even though we didn't decide to hire a doula until the very last part of my pregnancy. She was attentive and I always felt like she was available to help or encourage even before labor began. When I was diagnosed with significant hypertension at the end of my pregnancy and faced an induction, Dorothy came over and talked through our birth plan again and encouraged me that I could still have a wonderful birth. I was so reassured and felt confident in our desires and wishes for our labor because of her calm demeanor.
During labor, Dorothy was incredibly encouraging as well. She helped offer suggestions for getting things moving when labor wouldn't progress and offered her calm presence for when labor became intense. When we had to deviate from our birth plan, she was right there beside us and was incredibly supportive in what we decided needed to be done. Dorothy did an incredible job at helping my husband and sister know how to be supportive and helped all of us feel more confident during the labor process. She captured cherished photos for us of the labor and birth and helped encourage immediate bonding with our daughter through skin to skin and breastfeeding.
When she came for her post-labor visit, she talked through the birth process with me and helped us process everything that had happened. The birth story she wrote for us will be a treasured keepsake as well! I felt supported throughout the entire experience (before, during and after labor) and wouldn't hesitate to have Dorothy attend the births of future children! She helped to make our entire experience incredible!
Dorothy was an amazing doula. She was very organized and on top of things. When she visited with us before, she always took her time and wanted to really get to know us. She went from being a stranger to a close friend in a matter of visits. By her focusing on what we really wanted for our birth experience and needed from her, we felt very confident things would go smoothly once I went into labor and they did. Not only that but she has an impressive lending library benefited us greatly!!!
Once I went into labor, she was able to recognize just by talking to me over the phone that things were moving quickly and that she needed to come sooner than expected. When she arrived, she had a very calming influence and was able to give good ideas for helping me to relax and cope. She was a great support for my husband and helped him to know how to help. She helped us know when it was time to leave for the birth center as we didn't want to arrive early (a mistake I had made at my first birth). When I was delivering the baby, she was still able to help me cope and take pictures at the same time! After the birth, she calmly went about doing just what we needed and knew exactly the right time to slip out and leave us to ourselves.
I was very fortunate to have Dorothy as my doula! I highly recommend her!
