Sophia and I didn’t get a chance to meet before my son’s birth. She was the second doula in my team and stepped in about 1/2 way through a rough 48 hour early induction. We were originally on the fence about hiring a doula because I’m a health care provider and wasn’t sure I’d need one. But nothing in my flexible birth plan went the way I’d hoped and I can’t fathom what it would have been like without my doulas. Everyone needs a doula! Anyway... I don’t easily bond with people and I immediately felt comfortable with Sophia. She was calm, empathetic, and knew exactly what to do and say to support me and my partner. I’m struggling to find the words to express how much it mattered that she was there with me that day. But it mattered. A lot. And I’m forever bonded to and grateful for Sophia.

I’m so grateful that I had Sophia as my doula through my pregnancy and birth. As my first time being pregnant and giving birth, I had a lot of worries and stress. During my pregnancy Sophia was there to help advise on any questions and concerns I had. For example, my doctor told me to essentially just deal with my round ligament pain and take pain medication. When I brought up this pain and my doctor’s solution, Sophia helped to suggest some yoga stretches I could do to help alleviate some of that pain. She was there for me emotionally and checked in on how I was feeling/ doing. Making me feel heard, seen, and validated in everything I shared with them and was going through. She was also a great support to my husband. She helped to educate him on the labor process and answer any of his questions. And provided him with emotional support throughout the pregnancy, labor, and delivery. 

For my birth one of my main worries was not being heard and having trouble advocating for myself in the hospital especially as a woman of color. My birth didn’t go as planned and was very different than what I hoped for. We felt fully supported  by Sophia emotionally, their presence was very comforting and made us feel assured that someone was looking out for me and my best interests through my labor and delivery. I honestly don’t think I could have had a better doula than Sophia and I am so thankful to have had their help through this journey.

Sophia will forever be engrained in my heart as they were such a magical member of my birth team. Not only were they an amazing support to me, but also to my husband during the labor and birth. Sophia was soft and caring when I wanted it, but clear and direct when I needed it. After my home birth I went into the hospital later that night for some tear repairs. After a long night of supporting me through my labor into the late morning of the next day, Sophia did not hesitate to meet me and my husband at the hospital to continue to support us through this unexpected venture. Sophia is the whole package as a doula and my husband and I are so grateful.
