Heather helped us navigate my pregnancy and provided important resources that helped get me and my partner get through the third trimester and feel more prepared for the labour to come. She never made us feel judged for or pressured into decisions around pain relief or delivery options. It was very much an exploration and discussion to help us figure out our own preferences, and to prepare for everything to go completely differently since when does labour ever go as planned?
During the labour and delivery she was a huge support to my partner by helping him feel more confident in the things he was doing to help. She helped keep me comfortable and supported me physically and emotionally as I pushed. Her presence after the baby was born helped me settle into the recovery room and feel more comfortable with my new baby.
Heather also did newborn photography, witch was fantastic. We felt so comfortable with her working with our baby, and we love the photos! Same for the photos she took during the delivery.
My husband and I were honestly on the fence about hiring a doula. We’re first time parents and figured we’d take all the classes, watch videos and be set up for succes that way. While all of the classes were helpful and a great bonding experience for my husband and I, having our doula, Heather, at our birth does not compare.
The support you gain from having a doula is unbelievable. It’s support that your family and husband cannot offer. We met with Heather a few times prior to the birth to capture our birth plan and go through everything from labour stages, comfort measures and postpartum care.
I went into labour 4 weeks early with my daughter and when my husband called Heather, she arrived at the hospital ready to go. She had all her labour tools and was so prepared (even though we were 4 weeks early, and we weren’t even prepared!). Heather not only supported me through labour, she supported my husband. I don’t think our birth experience would have been the same if we didn’t hire Heather as our doula. And an added bonus to have some beautiful photos of our birth as well.
Overall I would absolutely hire a doula again, and I highly recommend having Heather as your doula.
My husband and I are so pleased with our decision to have Heather support us during the birth of both our children. My first labour was nearly 40 hours long, and having Heathers support allowed us to stay calm while at home as well as at the hospital. When complications arose, she was able to help me come to terms with my options and allowed me to relax and make decisions to keep everyone safe and healthy. My second labour was considerably shorter and at times much more intense. Again having Heather there was integral to the birth being calm and I felt safe knowing she was part of my support system. I recommend Heather to all of my friends and family who are about to have a baby - I strongly feel that having a doula has allowed me to have positive birth experiences and Heather was a great match for our family. She is incredibly kind, soothing and you can tell she truly cares about everyone involved.
Heather was a fantastic resource for the birth of our baby. The meetings that we had with her while I was still pregnant were non-judgemental, informative and comforting. Heather has a ton of resources to share and always provided thorough answers to all of our questions.
At the birth, having Heather both at our home while I was in labour ,and then at the hospital, was a huge help. She took charge and was intiuitive to both my and my husband's needs. She offered great suggestions to manage labour and pushing, while still remaining comforting and calm. She was a great advocate for me throughout the entire experience.
Seeing her photos a couple weeks after having our baby was wonderful. She captured some incredible moments while still be present to all of our needs. The birth story that Heather wrote that outlined the story of our son's birth was lovely and such a special keepsake. I naively thought that I would simply remember this huge moment, but that was definitely not the case, so it was so empowering to read how everything unfolded.
I would happily recommend Heather. The birth of our son was not at all a scary experience and I owe that to Heather.
Heather was recommended to me by a friend after I had shared about an experience I had previously with another doula that was, overall, quite negative. My friend told me of her own experience with Heather at the birth of her first son. She explained how Heather had advocated for her birth plan with hospital staff. She also credited Heather with helping her to achieve a natural drug free delivery, even despite a fleeting request for an epidural. I gave Heather a call the same day and I will be forever grateful that she excepted me as a client.
Heather was very proactive in helping me throughout my pregnancy in overcoming some of the anxiety and fear I was feeling as a result of my first labour and delivery. When labour day finally arrived, I felt like I was ready and well prepared if things should not go as planned. Thankfully, things could not have gone better, and I am now able to look back on my second labour and delivery with joy, happiness and satisfaction.
Heather was instrumental in guiding my husband and I to progress labour quickly and efficiently. She let us know when it was time to call the midwife and head to the birthing centre. She was also instrumental in pain management, giving us lots of different thigs to try and was very hands on in providing counter pressure and physical support both in between and during contractions. She also took beautiful photos throughout it all and of the first few moments with our daughter. Afterwards, she called at home to check in on us later that week and at our final post-partum meeting she gave us a written account of our labour and delivery as well as our photos on a memory stick. I would highly recommend Heather to anyone, she is very professional and truly a master of her profession.
Heather is an incredible doula. We honestly cannot say enough about her unconditional support and calming nature. She is so experienced and knowledgeable about everything labour and birth that we felt so reassured having her with us throughout our journey. She was so prepared and had unlimited ideas and suggestions that got us through a very long labour. Most of all, her generous support encouraged us and was essential in helping us bring our baby into the world the way we hoped to.
Heather was fantastic! Very supportive and knowledgeable throughout. Answered all our questions and was available when we needed her. We had a tough delivery and felt she guided us through the process nicely. Highly recommended doula. When we have baby #2, we are definitely going with Heather!
Heather has been there for two of the most formative experiences of my life: the birth of my two children. With my first daughter, Heather was the backup doula. She arrived in the delivery room without my ever having met her and immediately brought calm and grace to the room. She was there when needed and knew just when to step back and give us some room. She also has fantastic props. I was so grateful that she had her own birthing ball (larger than what the hospital had on hand), massage tools, peppermint oil for nausea and honey sticks. Heather was so helpful in suggesting different positions when I needed a change to get through a newer, more challenging contraction. Her massage skills helped me to reposition both of my daughters for delivery - one was backwards and one was facing the side. I really felt like her support allowed me to cope without an epidural for both labors, which was really important to me because I was concerned about a possible cascade of interventions with an epidural.
My husband is also a huge fan of Heather and of having a doula. He was initially skeptical of having someone else in the delivery room with us. He was worried that he would have to take a back seat to the doula, but found that it allowed him to fully focus on supporting me emotionally during the labor, rather than having to know all of the pain management techniques or how to advocate for us when my labour was slowing because of back labour etc. It also meant he could take bathroom breaks!
I highly recommend you consider Heather in your doula search.
We wanted the support of a doula in addition to midwifery care, and when we met Heather we knew right away that we wanted to work with her. A lot of people seem to think that a doula replaces the role of the husband/partner/spouse in a birth, but that is simply untrue. For us, Heather was an invaluable source of information and support to both me and my partner. Not only did she help me feel knowledgeable and prepared to give birth and breastfeed, but she also empowered my partner to provide me with the best support possible during labour, delivery, and postpartum. We both felt confident about birth thanks to Heather.
If we decide to have another baby, we will absolutely call Heather to be our doula again! It was a wonderful experience and we can't recommend her enough!
