Committee member of the NYC Dept of Health and Mental Hygiene Maternal Mortality Review board. Doula with By My Side birth program in Brooklyn for low-income mothers in high-risk area codes, former Membership Director at NYC Doula Collective, Carriage House doula and childbirth education teacher.
I began postpartum work in 1999, attended my first doula birth in 2002, and have been a full-time doula since 2010. I stopped counting births in January 2016 when I got to 200 births so 400-500+ now. It felt like yesterday although it was almost 13 years ago when I was laboring at home in NYC. It was my first birth that I had decided to do natural but still in a hospital. I can't tell if I was scared as I was just going with the flow until Maiysha stepped into my apartment. I still remembered how relieved I felt at the sight of her. She is much taller than me and without a word, I rested my head on her shoulder and I felt my labor pain just went away. Maiysha had been informed as soon as my contraction started at 2am. She had been checking in on me every now and then since. With her virtually telling me I'm doing a great job, it was very reassuring. She was very calm and decisive. She can tell via texts if it was time for her to show up and accompany me to the hospital. And she did just that and knowing I had someone who I can trust when I was most vulnerable was the best feeling I had ever had. The journey from my departure from my apartment to the final push at the hospital felt like an odyssey. But there was not a moment I didn't feel supported and cared for. Maiysha held my hands tight, pressed my hips hard, whispered encouragement to my ears, calmly negotiated with the nurses and doctor according to my wishes. She stepped forward, when I was at lost of words due to exhaustion, to tell the nurses the dos and don'ts to my newborn. She even followed the nurse to the nursery to make sure my baby is taken care of according to my wishes. After I went home, Maiysha came to visit a couple of time to teach me how to nurse the baby. She was the one who spotted a tongue tie and recommended doctor to clip the tie so my daughter could finally latch. I was so grateful for her professional knowledge and calm presence at my birth that I had to have her back for my second birth at home. Maiysha was born to be a doula and I was so lucky to have her at my children's births.

Choosing Maiysha Campbell as our doula was the best decision we could have made to support the birth of our daughter. We knew that we wanted to have a strong support system for labor and birth, especially since I was going to deliver at a "traditional" hospital in NYC. My goal was to give birth naturally without the use of drugs. In our two pre-natal prep visits with Maiysha, she patiently went through a wealth of material sharing her knowledge and expertise, answering questions, discussing various options, providing a more complete picture of what labor and delivery might be like. Perhaps more importantly, she was building a relationship of trust and respect with me and my husband which was essential for the actual event!
When I went into the early stages of labor, Maiysha stayed in communication with me via phone and text. Seven hours into labor in the wee hours of the morning, when labor started to intesify, Maiysha came to our apartment. If we hadn't had her, we most likely would have gone to the hospital at this point which would have drastically changed the outcome of our birth.
Maiysha was there to coach and comfort, to let my husband rest (crucial), to assuage my fears and empower me, to help me listen to my body and pace myself through the journey. She encouraged us to stay home as long as possible but fully supported my instincts as well. Within a half hour of arriving at the hospital I was fully dialated and ready to push; despite this the doctors still pressured me to have an epidural and mentioned the possiblity of a c-section.
With Maiysha's guidance, we stayed on track and I delivered a healthy baby girl after 16 hours of labor without any drugs. It was an intense experience and I am so very grateful for Maiysha's presence. She also visited us when we returned home from the hospital to help with breastfeeding and post-partum adjustment. Thank you, Maiysha!

Maiysha was an amazing doula for the 2010 birth of my daughter. I was in labor for over about 5 days, and she was available 24/7 thoughout the early stages by phone, came over on day 3 and stayed until my daughter was finally born, after a long hospital labor that turned into an emergency C-section. She kept my family calm, including my husband. There was some drama going on that day, and she helped my husband keep it all away from me. We would have been lost without her. I highly recommend Maiysha to all expectant couples out there.
