After a traumatic preterm birth experience, I wanted to do everything I could to have a more positive birth experience with my subsequent pregnancies. Holly is extremely experienced, which was something that was important to us, and Holly’s personality was the right fit for us. She was knowledgeable about the latest techniques in pain management and with our hospital. Although having a doula does not guarantee an unmedicated birth, her guiding presence definitely made it easier for me to achieve two unmedicated deliveries. Depending on your preference or comfort level, she will take an active role in assisting you through your birth or actively guide your partner as the support you. Her presence helped put me and my husband at ease in a situation that previously was tense.
For someone unaware of what a doula’s services include, Holly will come to your home twice prior to your first birth experience with her to make sure you are on the same page about your expectations and desires, as well as share helpful information about labor, birth, lactation, and postpartum. She will obviously support you through labor and whichever method of delivery you have, but also comes for a postpartum visit to check on you. She provides a birth narrative which captures details you forget while you’re in labor! She also kindly brings a gift.
My husband and I had a goal to VBAC in the hopes of a faster and easier recovery. I had never considered using a doula with my first labor because I had heard such positive things about the labor and delivery nurses at my hospital and expected that they would fill that role. I was completely wrong and ended up having a poor experience.
So when I decided to go for a VBAC, I knew I needed to approach labor differently, and for me, that meant considering a doula who could help me both with the physical aspects of labor as well as help me advocate for myself during the process in case I had similar issues with the hospital staff.
Enter Holly! I am not a very "touchy-feely" person and felt concerned that a doula would be more about cheerleading than a practical support system. Holly truly was both - she very much wants to help you to fulfill your expectations for labor and does not force her own opinions or approach onto you. She is practical and experienced but also warm and approachable. I felt comfortable discussing personal thoughts with Holly and fully trusted her advice on various matters.
Holly was easily available by email and phone, and I enjoyed our prenatal visits. Even as a second time mom, I found them helpful and supportive. On the morning that I went into labor, Holly jumped into action immediately and met us at the hospital in time to help me with my very fast labor. Due to the speed of labor, I was unable to get any pain medication (which was somewhat unexpected) but Holly's support helped get me through it! And before I knew it, I had successfully achieved my VBAC! Holly stayed by my side well after my delivery until a couple minor complications were resolved and checked in several times during my first few weeks. By far, the best decision I made in making my decision to have VBAC was hiring Holly.
Holly was absolutely excellent. The prenatal visits were very informative and prepared me for birth. Her lending library is amazing and the DVD's I borrowed from her really helped me prepare for labour. on the labour day, she was confident and calm and supported me in my hypno birthing which was working so well for me. I had an easy, 10 hour labour as a first time mom, no drugs, and pushed for only 18 minutes. It was almost as good as it gets, a dream birth. The post visit with Holly was very sweet as well and she answered questions I had and even gave me a beautiful hand made gift for the baby! I highly recommend her.
I have had two wonderful experiences with Holly Wiersma. First she helped me through the delivery of my son in October 2005 and then she helped me again when I had my daughter in November 2007. Holly is sweet, kind, warm, caring and attentive. She provided much-needed support for me and my husband during labor and delivery. She was truly in our corner and acted as an advocate for us and our needs. She is patient and calm and really helped me stay on track with my birth plan each time. Holly added so much to our birth experiences and we would highly recommend her.
