Relevant volunteer or advocacy work

Caring for pregnant and postpartum people and their kinship circles is deeply joyful and important work to me. I joined the Swedish Doula Program as an apprentice after my doula training and provisional certification to learn from a well resourced and diverse community of experts in providing perinatal care. As a neurodivergent and dyslexic queer person, I am particularly attentive to accessibility and sensory needs for those I work with. My continuing education and experience includes support for people seeking abortion care, disabled identifying individuals, and culturally competent care for pregnant people interacting with medical care systems at the intersections of race, class, LGBTQIA+ identity, immigration status, etc. My priority is to provide you with evidence- based, culturally competent care, and advocacy within your boundaries. Everything we do moves at the speed of trust. Outisde of doula work I am a disability justice and reproductive justice advocate, a lifelong learner, animal lover, spouse, home organizer, Geography student and enthusiast, listener and friend. I love to cook and would love to make you something nourishing to eat.

Kels is one of the most empathetic and compassionate human beings I have ever had the pleasure to get to know. They are in tune with your emotions, attentive to your physical & emotional well being, and intentional with their time & energy in caring for you. From pregnancy to birth to postpartum, Kels has shown up in more ways than I could ask for. I went into preterm labor at 33 weeks and Kels was very responsive even though we both didn't know what this NICU journey would look like for my child. Kels checked in constantly and jumped right into action to advocate for me when they got to the hospital when I was already in active labor/transition. I appreciated the fact that they remember details to tailor their care to what your needs are. For example, I love animals and my love language is touch, so Kels sent me some cute animal gifs and made sure they were physically close enough to me while talking to me so that they could give me a pat on the back, hold my hand, etc. It made me feel less lonely and less anxious. Kels also brought the tools that they thought I could benefit from, like fidget cubes and things to squeeze when the contractions hit. Overall, I felt heard, loved, and seen by Kels.

I also appreciate the fact that Kels is always looking for feedback for themselves to grow as a doula but also as a person, and whatever they don't know, they will learn together with you and lean on other professionals for information. If you are looking for a doula who is aware of your needs and will jump into action to support you holistically and advocate for you, I highly recommend Kels.

Kels was an amazing birth doula, helping us with our first birth experience. They were kind, thoughtful, calm, knowledgeable and really helped interface with the medical staff. We appreciate their queer-friendly ethos, deep listening, and calm vibes. We felt held and empowered at the same time. Their ability to navigate sensitive topics compassionately (like our previous pregnancy loss) was deeply healing and helped build a foundation of trust for the challenging adventure of birth. We highly recommend and are deeply grateful for Kels Cook!

I HIGHLY recommend working with Kels during post partum. They supported our family for 6 nights starting about 6 weeks after we brought our premie twins home, and it was one of the most important things that helped get us through some of those rough weeks. Not only is it amazing getting a full night of sleep and waking up to food prepped for the week and laundry done, but Kels is such a wonderful calming presence. As soon as they stepped into our house I always felt relaxed and like they had everything under control.
