What I want -- in life and especially childbirth -- is to surround myself with people who've stepped into their calling and are operating from their zone of genius. Becca Gordon is one of these rare people.
If you're thinking of having a doula at your birth, just meet with Becca. You'll see and feel for yourself how warm, funny, non-judgmental and knowledgeable she is. She's astonishingly wise but at the same time incredibly relatable and authentic. She's also kind of legendary... mention her to almost any perinatal care provider and I swear, the provider will fan out.
With my first birth, I somehow managed to have two horrible doula experiences (I'd actually tried to meet with Becca during my first pregnancy, but she was already fully booked for my due date). When I found out I was pregnant with my second child, I knew I wanted to have another doula experience even though my husband was completely against it due to our previous -- expensive -- disasters. We met with Becca and my husband was instantly sold. She is that good.
We found that the support Becca gave us before birth was as valuable and crucial as the support she gave during and after birth. She knows just the thing to say and do. My birth didn't go as I envisioned, but I always felt safe because I had Becca as my advocate. Without her, I would have been pretty freaked out. She was a major source of calm and comfort for both me and my husband. Becca is truly great. The best. For us, she is the only doula.
Becca is an incredible doula--the best there is. We are still in awe of how smoothly everything progressed with her support and guidance. Her support was so crucial in the final days of my pregnancy when I had to make a big decision of whether to induce or wait for labor to begin on its own. She helped me weigh the different options and make the choice that felt right for me. During labor, her calm presence and confidence helped me to experience birth without fear and anxiety. She provided support to my partner as well, helping him to be calm, present, and deeply connected to the birth process. Knowing I have anxiety around hospitals, IVs, and doctors-- she timed everything perfectly so that I was able to labor mostly at home and we arrived at the hospital shortly before our daughter was born. Everything progressed smoothly and felt very natural-- which I credit entirely to Becca and her calm way of guiding and supporting the birth process. Becca invested the time to get to know us and was always available whenever we had a question or concern. We met several times while I was pregnant and I cherish those conversations because they really helped prepare me and my partner for birth. She is an amazing communicator and was a great advocate for us at the hospital, helping us navigate that world and make decisions that felt right for us. She is extremely knowledgeable, well-informed, caring, open-minded, and has so many years of experience. The postpartum visit was also very helpful for us to figure out breastfeeding, burping, diapers, sleeping! I cannot recommend her more highly! We had exactly the birth we always wanted-- thank you Becca!
Becca was exactly the right doula for us. Extremely experienced but attentive and fully present. Completely on top of everything but disarmingly easygoing. Just the greatest communicator—so available when we needed advice or support before, during, and after the birth. Very, very networked into the LA birth scene of doulas and medical professionals. Really, the perfect guide to giving birth and smoothly navigating all the crazy hurdles, not just for the mom but the partner as well. Also, a very intelligent, interesting person, full of curiosity and adventure. The day we met Becca, we knew within the first fifteen minutes that the most important piece of our preparation was done. I could go on and on. We are the luckiest family to have shared our daughter's birth with Becca. She is really more than a doula—she is THE doula.
Thank god we had Becca at our birth! She was amazing. We had planned a home birth and ended up transferring to the hospital and delivering vaginally with epidural. Like so many, our birth did not go according to plan. Because of that change in plans, we got to experience a whole range of birth experiences from laboring at home to experiencing an epidural. Becca was SO great throughout all of these stages and seemed to intuitively know when to offer hands up support, when to give us space as a couple, when to offer suggestions of new positions. She was super at leading the circle of support I had with my partner and my mom. During the epidural, she directed people to sleep and was super enjoyable to pass the time, make jokes, and be silly with. After the birth, she continued to offer emotional support and guidance. This was especially helpful to help process a birth I did not feel great about. Becca was such an important part of our baby's entry in our world and we are so grateful she was there to support us.
My husband and I cancelled our other appointments with doulas after meeting Becca. She is both professional and warm and we felt comfortable with her knowledge and wisdom right away.
She is aware and experienced with all birth approaches and philosophies and was so open to what our birth plan was. She meets with you twice before the birth and was always so responsive to questions we had leading up to it.
The birth plan changed during the labor and birth - she went with it, holding space for how we were feeling, explaining things better than the medical staff at times, encouraging us, and so much more. She stayed with us for SO MANY HOURS, helping me and also my husband when he needed to rest.
We are so grateful to Becca and wholeheartedly recommend her no matter what your approach is - she is nonjudgmental and really wants to (and does) support you throughout.
I recommended her to two friends who both had similarly amazingly positive experiences with her.
I called Becca after reading her phenomenal reviews here on Doula Match and Yelp. Becca answered the call, literally and figuratively, and immediately tapped into her knowledge of OBGYNs in the city and the diverse options we have in LA when it comes to who and where we seek care and delivery. I felt safe with Becca as expert guide and we hadn't yet met. After meeting Becca in person with my partner and attending the two pregnancy visits, we felt that our understanding, comfort, and approach to pregnancy, postpartum and child rearing felt so much more clarified and developed. This all provided an incredible sense of calm and confidence- two trademarks of pregnancy/parenthood/and labor that felt invaluable. Becca listens and guides- she respected our decisions and encouraged us to find our way while helping us understand the options and resources available. She connected us to people and resources as requested. More importantly, Becca's warmth, authenticity, passion for her calling, and gentle nature is one of a kind. We are so grateful to have met her and shared this most intimate life event with her. She guided me through the most painful parts of my labor and her energy and presence just. felt. right. Simply put, Becca is the best.
Do you think your personality may be hard to match with a doula? So did I. Until I met Becca for my second child's birth. She changed my perceptions of all that a doula can do and how incredibly necessary this kind of support is for all mothers, regardless of personality and/or birth plan. If you are lucky enough to get to work with Becca, you will experience calm and thoughtful conversation, a complete openness to all ideas, and firm and assured support from pregnancy to postpartum. Her kindness reaches beyond you as the mother, and touches all those who may be present at your birth. I even saw her subtly soothe an overworked and cranky nurse. She brings out the best in everyone, and that's who you want at your side when you bring your baby into the world.
Becca is wonderful! She is warm, calm, a wealth of knowledge, a true partner and guide. She has your back no matter what your vision is for your birth. My husband and I often say that hiring her as our doula is the best decision we made. I was a very nervous first time mom with a specific idea of how I wanted my birth to go and she was with me every step of the way. She even did a house visit after the delivery to make sure everything was going smoothly. She is extremely available to you via email, text or phone. I have contacted her a handful of times after the birth of my son with nervous mommy questions and she always answered quickly. You can tell that she loves what she does, she is an awesome woman who has a special gift as a doula and if I ever have another baby, I will hire her in a heartbeat!!! My birth was wonderful and I owe so much of that to her.
Thinking back over my pregnancy and birth experience, I am so thankful that we had Becca as our doula. She is genuine, kind, knowledgable and so passionate about what she does. It's really more than a career to her. She was there every step of the way to answer questions and reassure me. I feel like she's a longtime friend who is always there when I need her--that's just how warm and wonderful she is. We took her Two Doulas Birth class, and I highly recommend hiring Becca as a doula and taking her birth class too. We felt so informed and prepared and it was great getting to know Becca prior to our daughter's birth. Becca looked over our birth preferences and counseled us and helped me understand and revise my preferences. While we preferred an unmedicated vaginal birth, I ended up having to be induced and had a few interventions. With Becca's support, guidance and expertise, I felt completely in control of my birth experience. Becca essentially led my pushing and helped keep me focused, and I can't imagine getting through it without her. Her post-partum doula support (one visit is included with the doula package) was great as well. I am so thankful for Becca. My husband was also extremely happy to have Becca's support. I truly hope she will be present at the birth of all of our children. She was an essential part of my positive birth experience.
Becca is one of the most wonderful supportive people my husband and I have ever met. We feel like we won the doula lottery having her at our birth. Her support pre-pregnancy in terms of answering all our questions and calming our fears went above and beyond what I had expected. My labor ended up being very long and difficult and she spent over 30 hours with us at the hospital and was instrumental in helping to calm me and my husband, help us understand our options, and make the best possible decisions for not only me and my family but my baby. My family and friends who were also a part of our birth also felt supported by Becca's presence and reassuring words. I will have to plan my second baby around when she is available, because I can't imagine going through this again withoout her!!
Becca is a fantastic doula. My husband and I hired her to work with us for a non-medicated hospital birth. We also took her 'Two Doulas Birth' class, which was wonderful. We ended up having to have an emergency induction at 39 weeks when I was diagnosed with preeclampsia. Thank goodness we had Becca on our team for that! She was a great source of information, and was able to work with the hospital staff to honor many of our original birth plan requests. She was extremely supportive and calm. Even the nurse at the hospital complimented her on her knowledge and demeanor. Infact, the hospital staff trusted her so much that they let her coach my pushing as long as the nurse was present. I can't imagine how our birth would have gone had she not been there - nor do I want to!
Becca is a wonderful doula and friend. My husband and I hired her for both birth and postpartum services and I'm so glad we did. She provided exactly what we needed - information and resources to help plan and prepare for an unmedicated, minimal intervention birth in a hospital setting, as well as the emotional support I so desperately needed toward the end of my 42 week pregnancy! During the birth of my son, she was attentive, calm, and focused, and she interacted with our medical providers in a respectful but assertive manner. She has been incredibly helpful during postpartum as well - she's very knowledgeable about breastfeeding and most newborn issues. Plus, I can always contact her if I have a question. Becca is extremely supportive and kind - anyone would be lucky to have her as their doula!
