I was initially a little skeptical about working with a doula but within minutes of meeting Stephanie, my husband and I knew that we wanted to work with Stephanie. Her warm and open demeanor immediately put us at ease and we put together a birth plan that was right for us. Stephanie is a great listener - she really got to know us and what was important to us in terms of how we wanted the birth to go and what kind of support we needed.
In the months and weeks leading up to our due date, Stephanie was in regular touch, not only checking in on how the baby was doing, but also checking in on me - how I was feeling both emotionally and physically. Knowing I had Stephanie as a resource made a stressful time so much more manageable.
Due to a late-pregnancy case of cholestasis, I was induced two days before my due date. Stephanie arrived to the hospital as soon as we were admitted and was with me, coaching us through the next 30 hours of labor. Whether massaging my legs, getting me to move around, helping me breathe through contractions, and talking me through every step, Stephanie was by my side the entire time. I ultimately decided to have a c-section and Stephanie was critical in helping me work through my thought process and arrive at the decision that was right for me, my husband and our baby.
Stephanie was the first person we saw in post-op and she helped our baby latch on right away which was a big feat given how I was feeling after the surgery. Having Stephanie as a resource in the days that followed was invaluable. I felt so supported by Stephanie - that was key to my recovery and making the transition from preparing for the delivery to being a mom.
Eight months have passed since my baby girl Mila was born. I feel so fortunate that we had Stephanie there to support us through this most incredible, life-altering experience.
Stephanie was an incredible and invaluable part of our birth team. From the first visit we knew she brought the right energy and compassion to guide me and my husband. Leading up to the birth of our son in October 2019, she provided emotional support and information that truly helped us feel prepared for what birth would entail and that we were confident in all our preferences, no matter what birth might bring.
The birth of our son took many unexpected turns and the value of having Stephanie there to comfort both me and my husband, as well as to remind us of our preferences, can not be overstated. Our hospital birth ended in an unplanned c-section and our son required time in the NICU. Stephanie not only helped us through 24 hours of labor, she gave us support up until the moment of surgery and was in the recovery room after. She helped me hand express colostrum and without that guidance, I would not have been able to get my son breastmilk so quickly given his hospitalization. She checked in regularly until our son came home and visited us in the hospital and at home.
Our experience with Stephanie has only confirmed my recommendation to all expecting mothers that they work with a doula, and Stephanie truly is the best of the best. We already talk about having her at the birth of any future children!
Hiring Stephanie was the best decision that my husband and I made for my first pregnancy, and we're working with her again to prepare for the arrival of our second baby three years later. Stephanie has a way of putting you at ease without "babying" you; she has worked with all sorts of clients and has a sixth sense for what a soon-to-be new mother needs. She is a total support system for not just the woman, but for the partner, too. (My husband loves being involved, so Stephanie kept him informed and guided him on the best ways to be supportive throughout the pregnancy, labor and birth.)
While my first pregnancy progressed without major hiccups, my water broke 3 weeks early and I had to be induced to deliver my baby. Stephanie kept me informed and was with me every step of the way, and made a potentially confusing time pass by with humor and good memories.
Because my daughter arrived 3 weeks early, my breastmilk did not come in for days. Stephanie was indispensable in guiding me through that befuddling time. I can see why most women stop trying to breastfeed their babies within the first few weeks, and I may have stopped if it had not been for Stephanie's constant, caring guidance. (I went on to breastfeed my first child past a year.)
My boyfriend and I knew within minutes of Meeting Stephanie that we absolutely wanted to work with her. Such a fun personality! She made us both feel at ease in that intital meeting and everyone after that. We were able to communicate with her with any questions throughout the entire pregnancy which was invaluable.
At the birth, it was Stephanie's voice I listened to and not the doctors. She gave me such clear and encouraging direction and supported me the whole way through with my wishes for the birth that I really wanted. She was able to explain any questions we didn't understand so we felt completely comfortable with all of our decisions.
We tell everyone who asks our opinion about what helps during birth and we both say "Stephanie!"
Stephanie is incredible. Without her, I am quite sure I would not have had the wonderful birthing and breastfeeding experience I did. With Stephanie's warmth and tremendous knowledge, I was able to have a completely natural birth. We labored together at home and then went to the hospital together. Stephanie helped to reassure my husband and me. She taught us laboring positions. She massaged me throughout. She told me what was happening when. Immediately after birth, Stephanie helped my baby and me to get a proper latch, and in her postnatal visit helped me to find comfortable breastfeeding positions that did not strain my back. She also taught us baby wearing and answered our many questions. I am so extremely grateful to Stephanie and wholeheartedly endorse her. Thank You, Stephanie, for all you have done for my family!
I see that one mom on here said she'd go through labor again just to have an excuse to hang out with Stephanie. That is well put. Stephanie is totally wonderful, and I'm not really sure what we would have done without her.
Going into labor for the first time, I had little idea what to expect, though our meetings with Stephanie did help prepare us. When it finally happened, I found it a huge comfort to be able to talk to and text with her, even before she came to physically join us. She answered so many questions during that time and was patient and alert to what was going on, but also respectful of my desire for alone time with my partner during the early part of labor.
I was in labor for about 30 hours. When Stephanie showed up at our apartment after I'd been having contractions for 15 hours, she was resouceful, gentle, and sensitive in helping guid me through what was happening inside my body. What followed was a very long, dramatic night that included two trips to the hospital, a thick-skulled cab driver who, when we got stuck in traffic, kept suggesting we take the subway because (despite our telling him) he didn' get that I was in labor, and my almost giving birth, some hours later, in an Uber. There were dismissive interns at the hospital intake, and I was the only one on the floor going without an epidural, and thus screaming my head off. Stephanie guided us through it all, only leaving at 6 a.m., afer our son was born, beautiful and perfectly healthy.
I wanted to have a natural, unmedicated labor, which is actually quite difficult to do in a city where somewhere above 90 percent of women get epidurals. Without Stephanie, I would have had to be admitted earlier and likely would have been induced and/or medicated. Because of her, I was able to stay in the comfort of my home, relax in a bath when I needed to dilate, eat and drink as needed. I can't thank her enough. If I ever do it again, I'm calling her for sure.
I can say without a doubt that hiring Stephanie was the smartest decision my husband and I made during my pregnancy. In our initial meeting, we both responded to her intelligence, sense of humor, expertise about all things related to maternal health, and high level of familiarity with NYC hospitals and healthcare providers. There was just an instant level of comfort that intensified throughout the pregnancy and in the days after our daughter was born.
From the get-go, Stephanie was a font of valuable information, referring us to useful books, videos, links, and other birth resources. When I had a bout of bad back pain in my third trimester, she put me in touch with acupuncturists and massage therapist who helped clear it up right away. And when I ended up going 10 days past my due date, she checked in regularly and helped me stay sane -- which was not easy, believe me!
Then there was the labor itself, which was very fast and intense. Somehow Stephanie beat us to the hospital even though we live in Manhattan and she's in Brooklyn. She confidently managed what otherwise could have been an overwhelming experience, helping us deal with the sometimes cranky hospital staff, coaching me through each and every contraction, and providing (literal) hands-on assistance once I got to the pushing stage.
I ended up having a labor that was very close to what I’d hoped for, and while luck was of course a huge factor, so was Stephanie. I also know that whatever kind of birth I wanted, she would have helped me get there. She is completely non-judgmental, agenda-free and has a very practical, grounded approach to her work.
In short, just hire her already. You will not regret it!
Best decision ever.
My first baby was a surprise breech baby at 41 weeks that quickly resulted in a c-section hours later. When it came time for baby #2 I knew I wanted to try for a VBAC since I was a good candidate for one. Learning from my mistakes with baby #1, I surrounded myself with the best possible team to accomplish my goal. It really does take a village and Stephanie was an INTEGRAL part of mine. She's super easy to talk to and clearly knows her stuff. I really enjoyed our chats at the pre-natal visits and felt that she knew exactly the right questions to ask and always had an answer for my (many) questions. I went almost 2 weeks over my due date and Stephanie was in constant contact with me to reassure me and provide guidance on the next steps since I was scheduled for an induction at the end of the week. Luckily that day never came and I went into labor at midnight the day before the induction was scheduled! Stephanie was texting with me from about 3am-5am when she rushed over to our house and rode with us to Mt. Sinai. Just like she predicted my labor stalled as we were checking in and instead we spent the morning laboring at a diner, in Central Park & finally up and down the median of Park Avenue! After checking in to the hospital we had to navigate a room situation, the US/Germany Soccer final & constant fetal monitoring. My labor stalled again around 6pm and it was Stephanie's suggestions that got it moving. When it came time to push she was right there explaining how to do it (not as intuitive as you would think!). There's so much more to the story, but I can honestly say I never would have accomplished a natural VBAC without her. The icing on the cake is that Stephanie knows a lot of people in the birth industry and is an invaluable resource after birth as well!
Stephanie is amazing. She is extremely knowledgeable, non-judgmental, and compassionate with an ability to easily explain information and provide reassurance during the entire pregnancy and birth process. Our labor went very differently than we had planned; Stephanie was there throughout providing incredible support (we couldn't have done it without her!) and answering all our many questions...so much so that the birth ended up being an amazing experience. She somehow had the ability to know exactly what myself or my wife needed throughout the whole process. We cannot thank her or recommend her enough!
My husband and I truly felt like Stephanie was part of our "team" during my labor and delivery process. We miss her! She was so helpful answering my millions of questions at any hour of the day or night. We were very comfortable with her and had a great time. My doctor gave me a lot of added stress and she supported us throughout that process and has a rolodex of other fantastic women that helped us through the process (accupuncture, placenta encapsulation, etc). I got barely any support from my doctor and don't know what i would have done without her.
We were very grateful to have Stephanie by our side during our preparation for birth, labor, delivery, and afterward! She is very knowledgable and reassuring and completely non-judgmental-- supportive of the choices that are best for you and helpful in supplying information to help you make good choices. She was very available throughout the process for any questions and during labor and delivery was a wonderful, calming resource. Having Stephanie there helped us have a meaningful and positive birth experience even though it went differently than we had hoped; I always felt safe and secure with her around.
Your search for a doula can end here. Period.
Stephanie was a dream. The ultimate partner for my partner and I both before the birth of our now two year old daughter, during her delivery which came compete with some unexpected complications, and in the weeks and months following her birth.
She is calm, cool, knowledgable and ultra decisive and professional and I think of her often as I venture into the world of pregnancy and delivery again with a hopeful baby number 2..just wish I could import her to london where I am now living.
Best of luck, and know that by choosing Stephanie, you're choosing wisely.
I would consider going through labor again just to be able to hang out with Stephanie. I'm serious.
When we met her, we just knew that she was the doula for us.
It was like having your most down to earth, funny, but extremely knowledgeable gal pal attend your birth! She asked very insightful questions of the nurses (who all knew her) and translated that information for me and my husband. I can't imagine giving birth without her!
She has also been extremely responsive in the post-partum period and answers my frequent texts about breastfeeding challenges. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about her! firstname.lastname@example.org
I can't begin to describe what a fabulous job Stephanie did for us throughout my pregnancy. I was high risk from the start, and Stephanie was a wonderful source of information and reassurance as we navigated a stressful pregnancy. When my water broke at 25 weeks, Stephanie was provided us with comfort and support. My husband kept in constant contact with her while I was on bed rest, and she guided me through delivery at only 29 weeks gestation. She gave me with fabulous support and knowledge about pumping/breastfeeding while my son was in the NICU and after he came home. We cannot thank her or recommend her enough! She has a wonderful gift and we feel so grateful that she shared it with us during the most stressful (and happiest!) times of our lives.
My husband and I had am amazing experience with Stephanie. She is a wealth of knowledge and support and was a big part of my ability to have a calm and smooth pregnancy. We consistently said, "Thank god we have Stephanie!". I can't imagine going into labor without her! She had great referrals for our birth class, breast feeding class, registry lists and additional support measures. When we went to the hospital, she helped us feel fully prepared and navigated everything for us which was truly priceless. I had a difficult labor and truly feel I couldnt have done it without her! Finally, at our post partum visit she proved once again to be indispensable and answered all of our questions on newborn and postpartum care. Stephanie is someone you can put all of your trust in.
I highly recommend Stephanie as your Doula. During our pre-labor visits she was informative and most importantly, warm; never did Ben and I feel like she was someone that we hired to do a job.
During the early part of the labor we were not sure if it was false labor or early labor because of inconsistent contractions, still Stephanie gave us advice, checked in with us to see how we were doing, and to remind us that whenever we wanted her, she would be there.
When my contractions got intense we called her and she was over within a half hour. When my water broke and things got really intense and went fast. Within the hour I was at minute long contractions 2 minutes apart! I was getting hit with one contractions after the other and was disoriented, overwhelmed, and really had not idea that it was time to go to the hospital. Stephanie could see it the instant she got there and she calmly got us ready to go. I went threw transition and starting feeling the urge to push before I could even get into the cab. When we got to the hospital I was fully dilated and ready to push however, my midwife was not there yet. Things were overwhelming and going very fast, but all along the way Stephanie took control, but in a way that was assuring and never overbearing. Because of that, I never felt fearful or scared, not even when I realized (in the back of a cab) that things were progressing alarmingly fast.
When my midwife showed up, all three of them made a wonderful team. Stephanie was very intuitive, and knew exactly how to speak to me and she worked so well with Ben and my Midwife. Afterwards, Stephanie stayed to help baby and me make the first latch and she hand fed me as I nursed. A week later, she came by for a visit with the baby and helped solve some nursing problems. She also offered to come back to help me use my Moby wrap and let me know that I could call her with any questions. I really felt taken care of by her.
Stephanie was such an amazing help during my labor and delivery. She stayed with us during an unexpectedly long and slow-moving process and made us feel totally comfortable labouring at home for as long as we could. When things did not go as planned, she helped us to stay calm and positive and allowed us to really love our total birth experience. Her support in the early days after birth was also key to establishing a great breastfeeding foundation with my daughter that we continue to benefit from.
My husband had a truly wonderful experience with Stephanie when she was the doula for the birth of our first daughter in June 2010. Stephanie is calm, kind, compassionate and unbelievably professional. We were impressed in the lead-up to the birth, but she really came into her own for the labor itself. My labor was very different from what I was expecting (a lot faster, a lot more intense) and Stephanie literally made the difference between it being manageable and unmanageable. I will never forget the way in which she helped me through those hours and the knowledge and experience she brought to bear on the situation. I feel so lucky that Stephanie came into our lives.
We had a wonderful experience with Stephanie. She was so warm and encouraging, and she was available for us the whole time during my three days of labor. She was in our apartment for many of those hours, and spent a good 20 hours in the hospital. She is a trooper, and so much fun! She always kept me on track with eating and drinking, and kept me focused on the final goal the whole time. I definitely think her encouragement and interactions with the hospital staff helped me to avoid a c-section. She even helped us do the breast crawl after our baby was born, it was so exciting! My husband and I cannot recommend her enough!
Wonderful! Stephanie"s support was outstanding & her genuinely open kindness and love for what she does made our day even more special...
My husband and I were so grateful to have Stephanie by our side throughout my labor and delivery. She was an extremely knowledgeable resource and helped me to make educated decisions. She supported my husband so that he could support me. I think that her presence was an integral part of establshing and maintaining a calm atmosphere throughout the labor process. I can truly say that I would not have changed a thing about the birth of our child, and I would highly recommend Stephanie to others looking for a doula.
Stephanie was, and continues to be, an incredible support for my husband and I. Our first birth experience was stressful going from a home birth to a cesarian 6 years ago. This time we chose to try for a VBAC in a hospital setting but knew almost nothing about navigating hospital dynamics. Stephanie was calm, kind, bright and skilled at helping us through the process, giving us plenty of thoughtful advice before, during and after the birth of our second son. Her commitment to our agreed upon wishes remained stable throughout what is invariably an intense moment. After our positive experience we hired Stephanie as a post-partum doula and have been so fortunate to have her support! She is truly gifted with infants and mothers alike. We can't recommend her enough!!
