Defne and I discussed what a doula was and discussed my expeditions and goals for delivery, and ways she will help me reach those goals. Discussed my comfort zone, likes and dislikes of being comforted. Relaxing techniques and even props she can bring to ease to delivery process such as essential oils, play list. My baby passed his due date by 9 days. I called Defne at 2am, I was able to reach her on the first phone call and she rushed over by cab. I had to have my water broken and rushed into emergency C-Section, in the mist of all the craziness and a room full of doctors it is all a blur. But , I vividly remember Defne face to the left of me saying "look at me, I'm right here, it's going to be all right" which was very calling and reassuring before I was rushed to OR. The next day at 7am Defne was still at the hospital waiting for me to wake up for anesthesia. My partner shared with me that Defne advocated for the both of them to enter the OR with me (I was put completely under anesthetic), although the doctors wouldn't allow it, he greatly appreciated the effort for he was unsure on which demands he could place and also shock from all the craziness. He stated that having her there in the waiting room provided much comfort for him as well. Defne came back to check one me and she once again advocated for answers as to the reason I had to undergo an emergency c-section. After discharge Defne provided a home visit discuss the experience of birth, my feelings afterwards, and to provide a watchful to the baby while I showered. Defne has a very peaceful, calming, and trusting demeanor to her but she also had great confidence in her field and she is a great advocator, especially when I felt intimated by a room full of nurses and doctors. She pushed to her the answers I wanted to know. Although it didn't go as what he had planned, Defne was a great contributor of a great birth experience for both my partner and I.
