First off: 5 stars. I highly recommend Kathryn! She is a wonderful person with a calming and supportive presence, and she knows her stuff!

Kathryn was actually the back-up doula for the doula I originally hired and did all of my prenatal prep with. So, while I'd never met Kathryn before she came into the L&D room, she was a fantastic fit for my family. Here's the story:

My water broke on a Tuesday afternoon, I was admitted to the hospital that evening and given Cytotec the following morning to get contractions going. My originally-hired-doula was with another patient at the time, so sent Kathryn as her backup. The Cytotec kicked my labor into high gear pretty quickly and when Kathryn arrived, she jumped RIGHT in. She was clearly familiar with my birth plan, which stated that I'd like to try for a pain-medication-free delivery, and she immediately started offering labor position ideas and comfort measures - much of which was directed to my husband so he could participate, too. When my contractions became more than I felt I could handle, she carefully balanced my original plan with what I was saying in the moment. I ended up getting the epidural and felt fully supported - still no regrets. As my biggest hesitation to receiving an epidural was being confined to a bed, she had numerous position/movement ideas for me to try to keep things progressing. When it came time to push (which was way sooner than any of us expected), she was so encouraging and positive. Throughout the entire labor and delivery, she somehow seemed to know what I needed (to feel/hear/do) before I did. I would not have made it as far without the epidural without her!

Even though I didn't know Kathryn at all before that day, she played a huge role in making my birth the beautiful, calm, empowering experience I was hoping for. I really felt like she and my husband were a team, encouraging me and offering ideas for me together. I would recommend her 10x over!
