I have a passion to provide caring support to women during pregnancy and childbirth, and to improve their experience of labour and birth. I see great value in natural, unmedicated childbirth, immediate skin-to-skin contact, and exclusive breastfeeding, if and when possible. I also serve families who choose medicated births or cesarean sections. I am here for you! I am currently working towards certification as a birth doula by DONA International and plan to have that completed by Spring of 2020. I am also a student midwife, and am currently apprenticing under a very experienced and well seasoned home-birth midwife. A night of good contractions every few hours turned into labor around 7:00. My loving husband and excellent coach rubbed my back and supported me through every contraction. He called our Doula, Dorothy Bauman, and she arrived around 9:30. Labor was serious now, and I was working hard. She, being my younger sister, made me feel tense when she first came in to serve, but I soon adjusted and accepted her presence. She noticed my response to her, and came on carefully, serving drinks and filling in wherever we needed aid. She soon began setting up the birthing tub, realizing my progression. She suggested walking or varying positions which I declined. Getting up just to use the restroom caused my contractions to weaken, so I stayed in the side-lying position in which I was most comfortable. My husband and I entered the pool together. Dorothy kept watch over the water temperature. She set up a fan to blow air towards my face and guided my breathing pattern. She laid a cool washcloth on my forehead when the pain was seemingly unbearable. This was releaving every time! In between contractions she served me yogurt and sparkling juice (that helped keep me from vomiting), as well as a wet cool washcloth. Holding tightly to my husband's waist I gave birth to our precious baby girl at 14:16. Dorothy was on top of it when baby came! She took pictures, handed us towels to dry, cleaned up the tub, and set everything in order again. Glory to our God for His gracious hand in our lives. We are glad we chose Dorothy to be part in this miracle of birth. She was a real asset. Just understanding each other and knowing how to communicate made the experience pleasant.
