Katya is an excellent doula. This was my first pregnancy and I knew I wanted a natural birth, but I didn't know much else - except that I was nervous about the birth would go. When my husband and I looked for a doula, we wanted someone who would provide support during the birth, be an advocate for us with the hospital staff, and help us understand any medical situations that came up. Katya delivered on all counts.
Katya was extraordinarily generous with her knowledge and time so that I could make informed decisions for my birth plan and be confident in those choices - including about things that I didn't even know to consider. Because she previously worked as a nurse, she was able to help us understand how the hospital staff was likely to perceive and react to our choices so that we could focus on the items that were most important to us. If you prefer to make decisions based on as full an understanding of the pros and cons as possible, Katya is the way to go.
She also did an excellent job of getting to know my personality and needs so that she could help me prepare beforehand and cope during the birth more effectively. It turned out that my contractions were erratic, which may have been due to the baby being in an unusual position. Katya guided me through a series of exercises to help turn the baby to a better position at home, rode with us to the hospital and helped me cope during the car ride, and was wonderfully calm and helpful the whole time. She took great care of me at the hospital and helped remind the medical staff of what was on the birth plan when questions came up so that I didn't need to be distracted. She even helped catch the baby (although that was not planned)! She's also been very proactive about offering suggestions and answering questions outside of our meetings both before and after the birth. All in all, we highly recommend Katya to anyone preparing to have a baby.
Katya is incredibly warm, open, and non-judgmental, which makes an anxious time feel so much calmer and more approachable! She is an excellent listener who truly cares about protecting your birth experience, as well as yours and your baby's health. Katya's experience makes her uniquely qualified to support all different kinds of birth experiences and help you make decisions along the way. She has many connections in the Bay Area for all different kinds of prenatal and postpartum support, which was beyond useful. We always looked forward to her home visits and she was always willing to get down and practice stretches with me! She supported and informed all of my decisions from my birth plan to choosing medication during birth. I credit Katya with the calm that I was able to embody during my pregnancy that has continued into my new life as a mother.
I was scared to have baby far away from family and within a huge medical system that couldn't take the time to get to know me. Having Katya there was a game changer; From phone calls to our in person meetings, Katya was present and caring. She is a wonderful teacher and you can see how amazingly passionate she is about sharing her knowledge, all while listening to your own preferences and desires without judgement. She took the time to get to know me and my family not just as a birthing team, but as a whole. By the time I gave birth, she was an integral part of our team!
My birth didn't go as I planned, because sometimes that's how births go, but Katya really made sure that my voice was heard when I needed it, made sure I always knew what was happening when things got scary, and held me up (sometimes literally!) during a lonely postpartum with my son in the nicu. Her incredible experience as a labor and delivery nurse gives her a unique perspective that I don't think most doulas would've had-and it came in handy! Anyone would be lucky to have Katya by their side!
If you are looking for a knowledgeable, caring, and dedicated doula for your birth, I would highly recommend Katya.
During the preparation sessions with Katya for the birth of our first child, Katya established herself as a professional who was extremely passionate about her work and knowledge about labor and delivery. Her background as an experienced labor and delivery nurse gave us the confidence that we were in good hands.
In these sessions, Katya took her time to get to know us and what type of birth experience we wanted. She helped craft a birth plan and explained to us intricacies of childbirth. She even went with us to our provider so we could all discuss the birth plan together to make sure everyone was on the same page.
During labor and birth, Katya was calm and collected and helped my wife through the contractions. During the pushing phase, she was supportive and helped her push in a comfortable position.
We can say without a doubt that having Katya as our doula helped my wife have a better birth experience and helped put our minds at ease.
