Words cannot express what having Ty as our doula meant to me. Ty was my steady rock, advocate, and calming force before delivery, during labor, and immediately following labor. The guidance Ty gave us helped me feel prepared to deliver and able to handle any challenge that might come. Our delivery was more difficult than I would have hoped because we were stuck in the triage room at the hospital for hours and I literally felt like I was not going to get through it. Ty was truly truly there as my contractions never let up and I grabbed and held onto her. When I was scared I looked at Ty. When I was unsure I looked at Ty and when I ready to deliver the final pushes I looked at Ty. Every parent deserves a doula like Ty in the room and I feel so grateful for her, especially when I love up on my new baby girl.
I chose Ty to be my doula for the birth of my second child; I hadn’t used a doula with my first. I met with her several times before my son’s birth. At each session, Ty was an attentive listener and asked plenty of questions to get me thinking about my preferences, my concerns, and experiences with my first birth. She didn’t try to lead me anywhere; instead, she supported me and helped me realize what I was already looking for during the birth. Ty is thoughtful, kind, and soothing by nature, which was perfect for me—I wanted someone there to help me focus and be calm through the sometimes chaotic flurry of activity in the delivery room.
There are things about my son’s birth that are “fuzzy,” but one thing that is crystal clear in my memory was this moment: I was in transition. I had previously been cold and shaking, but now I was sweating and burning up. During a strong contraction, Ty put a cool washcloth on my forehead, and I immediately thought, “Oh my goodness, having Ty just paid for itself. That was perfect timing!” It seems like such a small thing, but I was so focused that I didn’t think to ask for it, and she knew exactly what I needed.
Ty is strong—she did hip squeezes for me throughout my labor, which was incredibly helpful (and no easy task!). She is supportive—when I said I didn’t feel like I needed to push even though I was contracting, she encouraged me to listen to my body. Ty’s style is unobtrusive—I had other support people, and she didn’t overshadow anything or anyone; instead, she stepped forward when I asked (and when she realized I needed something) and then stepped back and let the birth be about me and my son. It was a wonderful experience. Thank you for everything, Ty!
My experience with Ty as my doula was absolutely amazing. She helped me so much. This was my second baby and when I say it was far difference from my first. She helped me stay calm and breathe. I honestly don’t think I would’ve been able to handle the pains of labor and do it all natural without her. Like she was everything I needed to get through this labor and delivery. It was her first birth and I am honored that she was able to guide me through the way she did her first time. My whole laboring and delivery process was amazing because of her. She allowed me to freely move around and use different laboringt tools like the ball, squats, hands and knees, and many more positions. I’m thankful and grateful I was about to have her there throughout the most intense and difficult things I’ve ever done!
