Rhiley was a phenomenal doula who made it her mission to comfort myself giving birth and my husband. She was constantly working to ease my pain, calm our fears, and show us ways we could accomplish our pregnancy and delivery goals.
I wanted to see if I was capable of having an unmediated birth for health benefits for myself and baby. Rhiley made that possible. If she wasn’t a part of our birth story, I don’t know that we could have done it.
After birth, Rhiley met with us a couple of days later to discuss our labor. We really enjoyed the timeline that she created to help us know what was happening, when, and why. She also sent us home with a plethora of of resources which helped us tremdeously in the first few weeks in terms of breastfeeding and comforting baby.
When I went to my birthing class at Mercy, the instructor (who was also a doula), was talking about Mercy having a volunteer doula program. Until this class I had heard of a doula but had no idea what exactly they did. As the class went on and I learned more about it it sounded more and more interesting. My cousin, who was my couch during birth, asked me after the class if I would be interested in requesting the doula. I told her yes, if one is available I would be game for that. This was my first birth so I kind of wanted to try it without any pain medicines (now I know how crazy that sounds) and what better way to help than a doula. So the day of induction I gave the nurse my birthing plan and advised that if a doula was available I would like one. So later in the morning Rhiley showed up with a bag of goodies and a ton of ideas and knowledge to help with the delivery. Before she arrived I was a bit nervous thinking what if we don’t click or what if it was going to be awkward... well that was NOT the case, Rhiley was awesome and fit right in! We did a lot of laughing and talking. She was great and had so many great suggestions for things to try once the labor started full force. She suggested laboring positions the nurse hadn’t even thought of. She worked with the nurse and at times when the real pushing was happening my nurse needed to check in with my dr and Rhiley took over on the contractions for the nurse. Her and my cousin were an awesome team and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience! She was with me until the wee hours of the morning after my long labor going from an expected vaginal birth to a c-section. She even stopped by later in the day after my son was born to check in on us. I highly recommend her and if I were to have another baby she would be part of my birthing plan again.
