I was fortunate to do part of my DONA doula certification training at a birth house in Uganda, where we volunteered and learned about birth from Wisconsin based DONA educator Emily Shier. I had an amazing doula for the birth of my own children and I have been an educator for ten years. I also have experience supporting high risk pregnancies, unmedicated, inductions and csections. I am DONA certified, I did my local mentorship with Brittney McCollum and I continue to engage in continuing education related to birth work in our area.
Julia offered us tremendous comfort and guidance during my birthing time, and we would recommend her to anyone looking for a doula. She was receptive to and supportive of the birth that I wanted to have. Her prenatal visit was informative. Julia walked through some of our options and offered helpful suggestions as to how we could best achieve our birthing goals. She fully supported what we wanted, and was also able to assist us in making certain data-based decisions for our birth plan.
During the birth, Julia served as a calming and helpful presence amid what was, at times, an extremely stressful experience. She suggested positions and tactics to ease my labor without ever coming off as demanding or pushy. At one point, she was able to see that I was getting close to pushing and suggested that we call the midwife in to check my dilation, which was exactly the right call. Julia always made sure I had cool washcloths on my back and water ready to drink for comfort. While I was pushing, she applied crucial counter pressure (after making sure that it was what I wanted) that was what I really needed at that point! She also took some pictures that my husband would not have thought to take and that we will treasure. Finally, she checked in on us with a (allergy friendly!)meal and helpful hints for breastfeeding and postpartum care for me.
Julia was invaluable throughout the entire birthing process by providing information, a calming and confident presence, and the exact support needed (if any) in each situation. We are so thankful we hired her!
Julia supported my husband and I, in the birth of our second child. A successful Vbac, induced with Pitocin, but with no anesthesia. I couldn't have done it without her!
Julia was remarkable at reading me during labor, sensing when I was feeling discouraged and speaking just the affirmations I needed to hear. She reminded me of the values we had talked through, providing me with courage to continue. Her knowledge and experience of birth stages, positions and comfort measures took a great deal of weight off of my husband. Julia's presence allowed my husband to be supportive without thinking of what position to do next and such.
Julia's role as an advocate between us and our provider/hospital were also a great advantage to us, especially prior to labor. Consulting with her, reminded us to ask better questions and use critical thinking as we faced emotional decisions regarding being induced.
I highly recommend Julia. One of my favorite memories from this birth was holding Julia's hand afterwards, thanking her for her support, with tears in my eyes and seeing her offer tears in response.
Our experience with Julia was wonderful. I can't say enough about how supportive and helpful she was before, during, and after our baby's birth. She provided us with very useful tips and techniques to help my partner and I prepare for labor. And when our labor didn't go as we planned Julia remained incredibly calm and supportive and helped us make the best decision for myself and our little one. She checked with us in the days after our birth and provided with us so many resources in the post partum period. We highly recommend Julia!
I was so relieved I used Julia as my doula. She was wonderful. From the first time I emailed her she wanted to make sure I got a doula that was right for me and encouraged me to interview others. She was more concerned I had a good experience then with just getting work. Throughout the pregnancy she was an email or text away to answer any concerns. During the labor she helped my husband be involved and supported both of us. I had a natural childbirth with no medicine and I wouldn’t have lasted without her help. If I have another child I will definitely be calling her again. I can’t say enough good things about her and my wonderful birth experience was all because of her help.
I loved working with Julia. This was my second birth (the first being unmedicated and without a doula). Even though my first birth went well, I decided to hire a doula for this one about two months from my due date, as I felt it would be beneficial to have continuity of care with a professional who is familiar with the birthing process and ways to ease labor pain.
I was even more glad of my decision to work with Julia in the weeks leading up to birth, when plans suddenly changed and I found out I wasn't going to get the birth experience I had originally wanted. She was incredibly responsive, and somehow knew just what to say to ease my anxiety and help me feel like I was in control again. During labor she brought a whole bag of supplies to help with the pain as well, and set a calming atmosphere in the room from the beginning, which I appreciated. She fit in seamlessly, working as a team with my husband and mother who also attended the labor. Julia was supportive of all my decisions, even when things changed and I went from wanting a completely natural birth to an epidural! She stuck with me through it all, remaining calm, informative and supportive. If you are having any doubts about a doula, please put them aside and hire Julia. She's great!
