Highly recommend Shannon and her team! The doula support they provide is essential for first-time parents.

We worked with Shannon as our birth Doula and Sue as our post-partum doula -- both are wonderful to work with, caring/compassionate, and also a great source of seasoned pregnancy and baby wisdom. They went above and beyond in helping my wife and I navigate the high anxiety of a very difficult pregnancy, providing critical emotional support via phone calls, emails, and texts throughout our (many) doctor and hospital visits.

We ended up delivering a healthy and beautiful baby girl, just a bit early via c-section, so we were able to convert some of our birth doula support into post-partum doula support from Sue. It was seamless and easy. We then got more time with Sue who provided support to us 2-3 days a week for the first few difficult weeks after birth. We don't know how we would have done it without her!

Finally Shannon also provided the post-partum check in, which was a nice complement to Sue's support, since each of them have different styles and areas of emphasis.

Shannon is the absolute best of the best! From our initial meeting, I knew she would be the best doula for me! She was in constant communication with me throughout my pregnancy and always available for a phone call to answer any questions I had. She also shared extensive resources and advice on things to do in the third trimester to help get my baby in the best possible position for labor.  When I was in labor, Shannon helped to keep me calm and helped me slow down my breathing making it easier to breathe through my contractions. When it came to pushing, Shannon had extensive knowledge of positions that helped my labor progress - all of which I was able to do with my epidural. After my baby was delivered, Shannon continued to provide me with support and answered my questions as I was learning to breastfeed. The monthly prenatal sessions during pregnancy with the Nova Birth Services team were an added bonus and helped me prepare more for labor and delivery and the transition to motherhood. I highly recommend choosing Shannon and the Nova Birth Services team for your doula needs!

My wife Caitlin found Shannon early on in her pregnancy after sharing experiences with some friends of hers on the birth experience with the addition of a doula. I honestly didn't know what to expect as a first time dad so any help in my mind was a plus. Shannon went beyond any possible expectation I had throughout the pregnancy and on birth day.

From being available to Caitlin continuously ready to answer questions as well as supply us with resources; and being ultra responsive when Caitlin went into labor in the middle of the night Shannon was the utmost professional! Without Shannon I definitely feel that our birth experience as well as the implementation of our birth plan would not have gone as well as it did. The methods and positioning practices as well as the different pushing positions she was educated on (some positions our nurse didn't even know about) tremendously helped changed up the pace of labor and slowly get the baby into the right position and keep Caitlin's energy up. She provided us so many little nuggets and suggestions only a person who's gone through many births would know. She was able to show me as the dad things I could even participate in to aid Caitlin as best as possible that I had no idea were helpful. The benefit of a third, neutral party in the room that is highly educated, and resourceful was worth its weight in gold. Shannon was worth every single cent, and we have continually referred her to some of our friends who are beginning their family planning. All of the professionals at NOVA Birth services were amazing throughout the pregnancy.

If we decide to expand our family more in the future, Shannon will be one of our 1st calls.  Thank you so much Shannon for helping us (mostly Caitlin) bring our little boy into the world!

Shannon is an incredible doula!! I found NOVA Birth Services through a quick Google search when I was 9 weeks pregnant. Getting connected with this group and with Shannon was so incredibly helpful throughout my entire pregnancy and birth. As a first time mom I had no idea what to expect; Shannon and her team helped ease all my fears by providing me with resources, education, personal stories and of course all the emotional support I needed. My husband and I felt so much more at ease going into the birth of our son knowing that Shannon would be with us. She helped moved me into different positions throughout my labor, spoke encouraging words and helped me with my breathing. So grateful we had Shannon as our doula, absolutely would recommend!!

We feel so lucky and grateful to have had Shannon help us through our baby's birth, the lead-up to it and the postpartum period.

First, Shannon made herself available to answer any questions at any time -- this was a good way to get used to asking questions, sharing concerns, and building a relationship ahead of the birth.

At the advice of my doctors, I chose to go through with a 39-week induction due to my age and the estimate that our baby was large. Shannon provided evidence-based information related to early inductions for babies considered large for gestational age so I could ensure I was making an educated decision for myself. Turns out the ultrasound measurements were wrong and our baby was average size, but as a first-time mom, I made my decision based on the information provided, and Shannon supported that decision and talked us through what we should expect with an induction.

We ultimately welcomed our daughter into the world after ~72 hours of an induction protocol and almost 4 hours of active pushing, and I'm so glad Shannon was there to guide us through all the steps in real time -- initially by text and phone calls, and ultimately in-person once things were clearly progressing. She fit in seamlessly with the hospital staff, working with them to put me in different labor positions, guiding me through exactly what I needed to do during each phase of the process, and acting as my cheerleader.

After the birth, Shannon helped me with the baby's first latch. Over the first week, she checked in via text and calls, and supported us through our first pediatrician visit, where we were told we needed to supplement my breastfeeding -- she came by our home for a few hours and helped me learn how to use my breast pump.

If we choose to have another baby, I hope to work with Shannon again. I recommend signing on as early as possible to really take advantage of the team's knowledge and experience!

Our ob/gyn was retiring and my wife wanted to have another person other than the medical team for that emotional support and trust during her labor. We decided to go with Shannon as our doula after a lot of internet research. She supported and provided us valuable feedback throughout the third trimester. She was very responsive with all our communications.

Labor was progressing very fast this time around. My wife would have gone through a back labor if not for Shannon's doula tactics. When my wife progressed from 7cm to 10cm in minutes the nurse wasn't ready to believe it until Shannon stepped in and convinced the nurse to check again. Everybody in the labor room was happy to see Shannon as our doula which was a reassurance that she is pretty good at what she does.
Her timely interventions, her expertise and her pain management methods all made this completely unmedicated birth experience so smooth and rewarding for us.

As a father, I realised that hiring a doula is not only helpful for the mother but also for us dads as I could be more present for the entire birth experience. We both agree that hiring Shannon was probably one of the best decisions we made

I have no idea how my wife found Shannon, but I feel very lucky to have worked with her. My understanding of a doula as the supporting parent in the birth was an expensive person in the room talking to my wife about how to breathe and stay calm. Boy was I wrong!! My wife had always dreamed of having a natural birth, and without Shannon’s support she would never have got one. Shannon directed us to a Bardley Method class to help us prepare, but our baby was breech at 37 weeks. We were told a C-section was in order and an ECV wasn’t recommended because it wouldn’t be successful. The OB who said this never seemed receptive to our birth plan, and there were other red flags too.

Shannon let us know that we did have other options, and not all midwife/ OB groups would feel the same way. Through Shannon’s connections we were able to switch to a new midwife/OB and hospital group late in her 3rd trimester. We had a successful ECV performed.

Come to the birth day and we couldn’t have asked for a better team. Shannon not only led us to an amazing OB/MW practice and hospital, she was also very hands-on involved in the birthing process. She helped with positions, and used several soothing and pushing techniques with my wife. She knew when it was appropriate to switch gears, and she brought out a strength in my wife—both physically and mentally—that might not have been possible without her guidance.

Shannon also took care of me. Her presence made me feel safe to trust and enjoy the beauty of natural birth. She helped me to feel involved in the process and reminded me to drink water too :p. We couldn’t have asked for a better birth for our first child and will take advantage of Shannon’s services for the birth of all of our future babies. We can’t thank her enough.

I hired Shannon to assist me in my goal of a med-free, vaginal birth. When my wife and I first met Shannon we immediately knew we were in good hands! She could sense my caution with my med-free plan, and my fear of the unknown (this being my first pregnancy.) She was able to recommend an excellent Bradley Method instructor, and she used her connections to help me get transferred to a midwife/ob group that was so much more supportive of my birth goals (at 37 weeks!). I know 100% that Shannon completely changed the trajectory of my birth experience before even stepping foot in the hospital

She also really took the time to get to know my wife and I before I went into labor- we went over my birth plan, she asked me how I personally dealt with pain management and stress. Through our conversations she got to understand the dynamics of my relationship with my wife. She did the work and positioned herself to be the BEST possible advocate and support person for us on one of the most exciting, challenging, intense days of our lives!

The day that I went into labor, she arrived at the hospital quickly and was an active participant the whole time. I was out of it, and hearing her voice made me feel so safe. I heard her supporting my wife and talking her through what I was experiencing. I heard her reminders that my body was doing what it was supposed to, and there was nothing wrong. Her breathing suggestions eased my discomfort and pushing suggestions sped up my labor during that final stage. Shannon made sure that I was changing positions to progress when I probably would just stayed in the fetal position! She advocated for a squat bar when my midwife thought I might be a little too tired to push in that position, having already pushed for 3 hours. I am so glad she did. The squat bar made me feel in control- probably shaved hours off of my labor time. Her calm, competant presence is something I want for any future birth experiences!

I found Shannon at the recommendation of a friend and I can’t, or rather don’t want to, imagine what my birth experience and immediate days postpartum would have been like without her. The prenatal meetings were lovely; she was warm, professional, and made sure she understood what we were looking for and how she could best support us. As a first time mom, I had plenty of questions and her answers were always helpful, patient, and kind.

She has worked with my OB group many times in the past, which turned out to be very beneficial for me. She was able to confirm their excellent quality of care, advise me of their quirks, as well as coordinate with them and assist while we were at the hospital.

My water ended up breaking early and she met us at the hospital where, with her assistance & guidance, I was able to have an unexpectedly quick and fairly easy delivery! Unfortunately, I then experienced some complications during the golden hour — complications which I believe she was the first to clue into. She stayed with me for the duration of the following procedure. Her presence was a steadying comfort in an otherwise upsetting event.

She kept in contact throughout pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum via text and call with both myself and my husband, responding in a timely manner.

One of the most significant check ins was when we got home. I was really struggling to recover and adjust, and she could tell immediately. She very quickly made sure I had the opportunity to get the additional support I needed and wanted. Like I said in the beginning I can’t, or rather don’t want to, imagine what my birth experience and immediate days postpartum would have been like without her.

She has been a critical resource of knowledge and a pillar of support that helped get us through a quick labor, eventful aftermath, and rough transition.

I cannot recommend her enough.

I cannot recommend Shannon enough! When I began to look for doulas to support us in the hopes of having a VBAC with our second child, Shannon's name kept coming up. She works with VHC and my OB had good experiences working with her before. Shannon pointed me in the right direction with resources specific to my needs. She walked me through a number of scenarios prior to birth and supported me in the things I knew I wanted/didn't want for my birth. When I went into labor 5.5 weeks early, I was anxious but Shannon's calm demeanor and willingness to work with VHC staff was so calming. I felt like I had a team working for and with me. Thankfully I had a very smooth labor and I attribute a lot of that to Shannon explaining to me what was happening and what I needed to do to have a successful and easy labor. 100% recommend!

Shannon was an amazing doula! From helping me solidify my birth plan to helping me to the very end she helped me stay positive and grounded. My delivery was a crazy ride, but Shannon helped keep me and my husband informed and "translate" per say. She made sure to stay alert and prepared whenever there was a last minute change for my delivery. From the many times I felt like I was losing to my self doubt she helped pull me out. Her knowledge and hands on techniques definitely helped me not feel "stuck". Shannon has a kind touch and inspiring words that make all the difference. Even post-partum she guided us on what to expect and how to deal with in the moment hurdles. Shannon is an amazing doula and I highly recommend her. Her professionalism, knowledge and kindness put together make the perfect choice. She never once made me feel pressured. Thank you Shannon for everything! I'm so thankful I found you, and for all the support you have given me and my family.

My husband and I loved working with Shannon! She played a huge role in making sure I had a positive birth experience as a first time mom and I couldn’t have done it without her knowledge and support. During my 40 hour labor, Shannon helped me cope by applying counter pressure during my surges, suggesting position changes, providing encouragement, and helping me make game time decisions. Shannon struck a perfect balance between providing evidence-based advice while also advocating for my needs and wants.

Throughout my pregnancy and postpartum, Shannon was always extremely quick to respond to my questions and I loved knowing she was only a text or call away.

I found our postpartum visit especially valuable! Shannon came to our home during the chaos of the first week and gave us advice tailored to the specific issues we were facing with our little one (sleep deprivation and feeding). That night, after implementing her suggestions, my husband and I had the best night of sleep we’ve had since our son was born!

We cannot say enough good things about our experience. Everyone needs a Shannon at their birth!

As a first-time dad who is very rooted in data, having Shannon support me and my wife during pregnancy/labor was invaluable. She answered all of our questions throughout the pregnancy with evidence-based support and having another educated opinion outside of the medical system was very helpful in navigating the birth of our daughter. When my wife's induction progressed much quicker than expected, I was able to call Shannon at 4AM to get advice and support. She is truly on call 24/7 and it was so helpful to have someone to call who knew my wife and I and could provide additional guidance in a crucial moment.

We cannot thank Shannon enough and would highly recommend hiring her! We definitely plan to do so for our future children.

We cannot thank Shannon enough for making our birth experience so much better! My husband and I were originally interested in hiring a doula to support my desire for a natural birth, but we quickly learned there are so many benefits beyond that.

Shannon supported us throughout the entire pregnancy and was a great resource for us to ask any/all of our first-time pregnancy and parenting questions. She was always able to provide us with evidence-based answers. She has such a wide range of knowledge we truly felt we could ask her anything!  Toward the end of the pregnancy, our child was diagnosed with IUGR and we had to navigate weekly decisions around induction. Having Shannon's support to help weigh medical advice and our own preferences/emotions was extremely helpful, giving us the confidence to advocate for ourselves while keeping the baby's health as our top priority.

Another thing we loved about Shannon and Nova Birth Services was they were supportive of us having the birth we wanted and did not try to push any personal preferences onto us. I ultimately decided to have a medicated labor and Shannon was just as supportive as she would've been during a natural birth. She was with me through all of my active labor and I credit her positioning skills to getting my baby into a spot where I only had to push for 30 minutes!

We would highly recommend hiring Shannon as your doula, we plan to do so for future children! It is so helpful to have someone who supports your vision for pregnancy/labor outside of the medical system with so much knowledge. Shannon is that person!

Shannon is an outstanding doula. We are fortunate that she was with us throughout our pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum care. There were many insights to pregnancy and specifically delivery methods Shannon imparted to us, which made us feel secure and comfortable with the entire delivery process. Shannon helped us navigate the delivery scene by explaining hospital jargon, and helping us understand our options. At the end of the day, we felt very confident in the decisions that were made because we felt as though we were a part of the decision making process. She's personable, affectionate, and keeps it real, which we appreciated a lot! We would highly recommend Shannon to be your doula.

Working with Shannon was amazing and she made my birth experience so much smoother. I interviewed many different Doulas to see who would be the best fit and knew immediatly that she was someone I could be 100% comfortable around and trust. She really knows her stuff and was extremely helpful during the pushing process with different position changes that would help me make the most progress. She was a very calming presence and reminded me to breathe when I was starting to tense up. My husband and I were incredibly thankful she was there, as it was our first child and we had no clue what we were doing. We will definietely be hiring her for baby #2.

Shannon brought so much peace of mind my husband and I throughout my pregnancy, labor, and especially delivery! Her calming and empowering presence was key to helping me focus and labor with minimal stress. I so appreciated the way she worked hand in hand with my hospital team (nurses & doctors), I felt thoroughly supported and cared for. I was most grateful for the way she was able to read my body language and facial cues and knew when I needed extra verbal, physical support, or when I just needed distraction. Having her with us through my labor and delivery was such a comfort and truly empowered me to say what I needed and when I needed it (which is generally not something I'm good at). She is a lovely person and an Incredible doula! You will not regret inviting her into your circle of care! She does everything she can to support, encourage, educate, empower, and care for her mamas, babies, & dads too! We are so thankful she is part of our daughters story!

Shannon was an amazing support to my wife and I leading up to, during, and post-delivery of our first child.  She was very knowledgeable and encouraging throughout the entire process and helped us get as prepared as possible for whatever may come.  She stayed with us in the hospital during early labor all the way through delivery and was an amazing advocate for us when engaging with the nurses and provider.  Can't thank her enough for everything and would highly-recommend!

Shannon was able to help me with a natural delivery. I had to push for 4 hours and she was right there with me, even helping physically when I needed it. I credit her with helping get the baby turned naturally as well- the baby was facing the wrong direction (head was in pelvis but not right direction)... thanks to her and her advice and help I was able to naturally turn the baby by turning myself every 10 minutes or so, saving me from a c-section or any other type of intervention. She encouraged me to keep going when I didn't think I could anymore and I'm glad I had her there to help me not give up! Having her there at the hospital all day kept me calmer than I would have been, I knew if I had any questions I could ask her and turn to her if I wasn't sure about a process or procedure.

Before my wife got pregnant the first time I hadn't done my research and assumed doulas were for more spiritual-oriented people and that all we needed was a good doctor. A parent friend told me that we absolutely should get a doula and I learned about the strong evidence that doulas produce better medical outcomes. We hired Shannon and she was absolutely wonderful and gave us exactly the help we needed through a challenging birthing process. Her expertise and reassuring presence made a huge difference for us. As soon as my wife got pregnant the second time, we called Shannon right after our families. I can say it is a near certainty that the birthing process would not have gone the way we wanted it to with our second child without Shannon and she made it a better and safer experience for the whole family. I would recommend her to anyone.

I was late into my pregnancy once I realized how important a doula is to your pregnancy, labor and postpartum but was fortunate enough to find Shannon Mathews who had availability to take me on as a client.  Once I met Shannon for our virtual call, I instantly knew she was “my doula”.  I loved her approach of your birth, your way.  She truly embodied that each step of the way.

I was induced a week past my due date and once they gave me the first few doses of medicine, my contractions started quickly.  Shannon was right there answering my calls and texts helping me navigate the early labor process and determine when it was the right time for her to join me.  When Shannon arrived she immediately knew just what I needed, helping me do some work on the ball to encourage baby to come down into position, walked me through what the epidural was going to feel like so I didn’t panic and continued to work on various poses with me after the epidural to ensure baby and I were progressing through the process as naturally and successfully as possible.

Once it was time for me to start pushing she offered me coaching and encouragement along the way and continued to put me in various positions to help the baby move through the birth canal.  I ended up pushing for 3+hours and Shannon never left my side.  She was right there doing everything possible to help me though the labor.  She was so comforting and I had complete trust in everything she suggested I do.

There was only one nurse so without Shannon I would not have had the support needed for getting through my labor.  I definitely underestimated how challenging and scary labor can be. It was invaluable to have Shannon there to help us navigate the process and information that was being provided to help us in making the right decisions for our family.

I will definitely be working with Shannon again if/when I have a second child!

I can't put into words exactly how much Shannon helped me during my pregnancy and birth of my daughter. I can look back and say that I had my "dream" childbirth mostly in part because of Shannon's support. She was responsive, empathetic and stayed in touch with me during my high-risk pregnancy which had many twists and turns. I really wanted a natural child birth and she helped me navigate that process at home and in the hospital. I ended up needing a lot of help with positions in labor and she was there to physically support me for many many hours and even the nurse was impressed with her skills and knowledge! Her experience is obvious and I always felt comfortable  with her. She always knew how to let my husband be very involved which I had wanted. Shannon anticipated every need of mine in labor, from hand holding, sips of water, words of encouragement, knowledge, rubbing my arm/back/legs etc.. I simply would not have been able to get my baby out vaginally without her and mentally I would have given up. She is hands down the best you can find and I am tremendously greatful we hired her!

Shannon is simply awesome.  We met by chance during my first delivery when my doula could not make it.  Talk about a serendipitous occasion!!  Even though we met that day, I instantly felt comfortable with her.  Shannon worked through an incredibly difficult labor for our daughter.  She respected our wishes to attempt a natural birth and when things didn't exactly go as planned, she helped to guide us through next steps.  Shannon has excellent experience with the hospital we gave birth in and had worked with our midwife and some of the nurses before!
Shannon was the first person I called when we got pregnant with our second baby.  She stayed in touch during my pregnancy and was there every step of the way during delivery.  Her style is relaxed and supportive.  She talked me though every contraction and encouraged me when it got tough.  We are done having children, but I would hire her again and again if we chose to have more!  Thank you Shannon, we are truly lucky to have met you and honored that you were there to help bring both our babies into the world. Much love, Kerrie and Dan

As only a semi-enlightened man and the son of a doctor I didn't understand what a doula was or why I wanted one in the hospital where my wife would deliver under the care of the licensed medical professionals. It is fair to say I was "anti doula" as recently as 4/23/22. All that changed on 4/24 with the birth of our daughter. She was born in a leading hospital in northern Virginia with a well regarded OB...and yet I'm almost positive none of my wife, my daughter or I would have made it through labor and delivery without Shannon. She was the captain of a well coordinated team helping me help my wife, keeping my wife calm and focused directly and acting as a choreographer with the nursing staff. It was her suggestions on positioning and approach that made the biggest impact on the labor itself. It was an intense day and Shannon was knowledgeable, competent, patient and empathetic to the nth degree. I once couldn't imagine sharing such a personal intimate experience with a third party and yet in hindsight, she had to be there. She was family for the day. She was an indispensable part of the team. Thank God for Shannon!

Shannon is a Godsend! We began working together early in my first trimester and I’m so thankful for the support she provided as I navigated pregnancy.

Shannon was available by phone, email and text…we often checked in with one another after each OB visit and when I had questions and/or concerns. Shannon responded promptly each time.

My birth experience was absolutely incredible and I owe that in large part to Shannon. In the months leading up to the birth of our daughter, she made sure I was informed (objectively sharing evidence-based resources), prepared and motivated me to advocate for myself during pregnancy and in labor. Shannon is a talented doula and an amazing person; she is kind, supportive and encouraging. I can’t thank her enough. She has my highest recommendation!

From the moment my wife Chelsea’s water broke, I was in touch with Shannon until she joined us at the hospital. Personally, I am really appreciative of Shannon’s soothing  presence in the delivery room.

As soon as she arrived, we knew we were in good hands. She calmed, encouraged and offered advice. Even when we decided to make a last-minute change in the birth plan, she offered insight and made sure the decision was ours.

She has the ability to be both professional and personable. At all times, she made us feel like we were all working together, in a concerted fashion, to deliver our baby in the safest way possible and, in the process, ensuring that Chelsea was having a birthing experience that she would remember fondly. Besides, she often reminded me to eat and rest. Another gesture that I appreciated.

A few days after the delivery, she conducted a postpartum visit at our home and gave us a plethora of advice. I am grateful for Shannon’s support in this experience and for helping make the birth of our daughter a memorable experience.

Shannon was an absolute godsend in our time of need.

Our original doula got COVID the week my son was born and we didn't know about it until we called her telling her we were in labor.

Thankfully she contacted Shannon to help us and she came as soon as we got to the hospital. She supported me through every difficult and scary decision we had to make and helped me to understand my options. When I would start to have an anxiety attack she would pull me back in with her soft, gentle encouragement.

I can't say enough how grateful my husband, our son and I were to have Shannon with us through this crazy and wonderful adventure, even if it was only 28 hours. I would call Shannon right away if we ever found out we were pregnant again because I would want her with me.

Shannon was a wonderful blessing to our family before, during and after the birth of our daughter.

As a first-time dad, I read the books and knew the theory of supporting my wife during pregnancy and labor, but Shannon's experience, reassurance and guidance was invaluable.

We can't reflect on our daughter's gestation and birth without great thankfulness that Shannon was there! 10/10 would use her services again.

Shannon is the best! She's ALWAYS available to answer any questions and is always interested in what is going on with your pregnancy. She's on your side literally every step of the way. Additionally, she legitimately cares about you, your family, and your baby. Having her guidance and expertise along with her love was a wonderful experience for us and we are so grateful she is a part of our lives.

My husband and I couldn't be happier with our experience working with Shannon.  Typically, during medical procedures I have extreme anxiety which often causes me to pass out.  For this reason, my husband and I decided that having a doula for the birth of our first child would be especially helpful.  When we talked with Shannon from home during early labor and once she joined us at the hospital, she offered a variety of suggestions for improving our baby's position and reducing my discomfort.  Following her suggestions focused my mind and kept me from becoming anxious.  Her continued presence during my long labor allowed my husband to take breaks, confident that I was in good hands.  Shannon was constantly positive and supportive.  I can't imagine having given birth without Shannon.

I cannot say enough about Shannon. As an older first time mom, I had a lot of fears about how my birth would go. After talking to Shannon the first time I felt so at ease. She explained parts of the birth process in a way my husband and I both understood and I felt that my wants were clearly understood. Shannon was available for any questions throughout my third trimester and, when I was told I needed an induction, she supported me and reassured me that I could still have the birth I wanted. During my labor she was a calming force for both myself and my husband and she worked perfectly with my OB and nurses. I am grateful for her knowledge and for the heart she puts into her work. I will absolutely have Shannon at my next birth!

Having Shannon has our Doula was such a blessing both before and during the birth of our first child.  Her calm yet warm demeanor helped ease both my husband and my own fears, and she was wonderful about informing us with each decision we made without pushing us any one particular direction.  I couldn't recommend her enough!!

I'm certain I wouldn't have made it through my birth without Shannon and couldn’t recommend her and Nova Birth Services enough. She was so supportive, knowledgeable, and engaged but we never felt like she was taking over or pushing my husband out of a role. Whenever there was a big decision to make, Shannon would calmly discuss my options with me to make sure I understood all the options and felt comfortable with my decision. The best part is that she was easygoing while still assertive when necessary. Childbirth is a long, intimate process and it’s so important to have the right person in the room, we loved spending time with Shannon during and after our birth.

As the father of the newborn, I thought hiring Shannon as a doula was an absolute must. We were in labor for close to 20 hours and we couldn't have done it without her. Having Shannon there advocating for us making sure we were well versed on our options during labor was very comforting and helped us in making hard decisions during a stressful time. We would highly recomend Shannon to who ever is considering a doula.

With tears, I write this testimonial about Shannon, and the impact she had on both myself and my husband during the birth of our daughter last month. The support and genuine love we felt from Shannon, before, during, and after birth was something we now realize we could not have done without. For anyone questioning whether or not to hire a doula, I would say that it is something you will not regret, especially if you hire someone like Shannon. She brings a presence of peace and knowing, which is critical during the unknown twists and turns that can come with labor and delivery. Thank you for blessing our family with your care, Shannon! You will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

My son was born in May 2020 and Shannon was both our birth and postpartum doula. She was honestly such a blessing to my husband and I during this difficult time. During the birth she was so calming and reassuring. She answered our questions and made me feel like I could do it, even when achieving a successful vaginal birth seemed impossible and I wanted to quit. I am sure that without Shannon I would’ve needed a c section. She had so much knowledge and her support was crucial for both me and my husband. Our son had some difficulties when he was born, but Shannon explained what was going on while the doctors and nurses were busy quickly treating him. I can’t say enough good things about Shannon. My husband and I would never have another baby without her. We both recommend her to every expecting parent we know!

Shannon provided excellent care and birth support to myself and my husband during the labor and delivery of our first child. We were nervous about having our child in a standard hospital because I wanted a natural birth and was aware of the hospital's high C-section rate and low rate of unmedicated births. Shannon made it possible. Though my labor was very difficult and painful, she supported me with great pain management techniques that helped me successfully have a natural birth. She was also a great support to my husband, who would not have otherwise known how to assist me during labor. I highly recommend Shannon and Nova Birth Services.

This is my second labor and my first ended in a c-section. I never thought I would need a doula besides my Obgyn and nurse in a hospital environment. However, during my first labor, both my husband and I were at our wits end in the L&D room, none of my then-provider and nurse were "there" to support me and I was helpless and unable to push out the baby under strong norcotics. This time around, I wanted someone, other than my spouse, doctor and nurse, to be my advocate and champion for a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) and who supports me both emotionally and physically before and during labor. I found Shannon, she gave me encouragements/ideas and sometimes a benefit of doubts too that help me think clearly on what exact birth/labor experience that I desire. On my induction day, Shannon was with me the entire time, as contractions got unbearable with Pitocin and a broken water, Shannon was there to support, soothe and coach me through each contraction. She helped me stay strong when I was weak and I probably couldn't have done it without an epidural (I had it last time) if I didn't have additional emotional and physical support from her during those painful moments. Basically, I couldn't have pulled it through without her. Now, I had a successful VBAC and couldn't be happier! Thank you SO much, Shannon! I wish I had you in my first labor experience.

Shannon was the Doula when my second son was born and I can’t say enough great things about her! She helped me have the labor and delivery that I wanted, respecting all of my wishes, and advocating for me throughout the pregnancy and the labor and delivery! She was such a great support before, during, and after my beautiful son was born.

I did not have a Doula when my first child was born. Being in the medical field myself I thought I knew most of the interventions and alternatives so I planned to advocate for myself. But when you are in labor it’s very hard to speak up for your wishes especially when you’re in pain, scared, or overwhelmed, all of which happened to me. I was hesitant about getting a Doula for my second child but we decided that the cost was worth it after having such a rough experience when my first child was born. And I could not have been happier about the choice of doulas, Shannon was my primary and Andrea backed her up. Both were so helpful and supportive during my pregnancy, they were there to help me plan and keep me calm.

After my second son was born I felt overjoyed and empowered! I can’t stress how much better I felt emotionally and physically!!! I was able to bond and enjoy time with my baby and it was absolutely beautiful. I have Shannon to thank for giving me the pregnancy and delivery I wanted!

So even if you don’t want a natural birth, whatever choice is right for you and your baby. I would highly recommend hiring the NOVA Birth Services and can personally highly recommend Shannon!

I loved working with Shannon and if I ever need a doula again I will be sure to work with her. Shannon is very personable, knowledgeable and relaxed. I loved just chatting with her and learning from her. She takes the time to get to know you and is there for you during your pregnancy, birth and postpartum days. She even helped me find a new doctor in my third trimester. Her passion for what she does is evident in the fact that she holds free motherhood support meetings monthly. She does not push any sort of agenda on you...she is a caring, lovely woman who seeks to serve others. I consider her a friend and I am thankful that she made my delivery such a positive experience.

Shannon Matthew's has a beautiful light to her. I knew as soon as I walked into the room that she was the one God chose to be my doula. Energetically I was drawn to her kind nature and her wisdom. I mean the woman knows her stuff. During my pregnancy she was very supportive and practical. The doctor told me I would have to have a cesarean due to my baby's position. He was still breach at 40 weeks. I was beyond upset. Shannon helped keep me calm during this entire process. She was so reassuring and comforting and even came to my doctor's appointment with me.

Well the day came for the scheduled c section. Shannon showed up on time to the hospital with her smiling face and her grace. I needed that ! The father of my child was panicking  she helped calm him. Through the whole process she was there. I insisted on her being with me because she helped calm my nerves which were scattered all over the hospital. I can't thank her enough !

Our bundle of boy came weighing almost 7 pounds and we celebrated with tears and joy. After the operation she continued to stay and check in with me. Once I was discharged from the hospital 2 days later she followed up and came to see how baby and I were doing.

To this day Shannon still follows up with us and I can't thank her enough for all that she did. If I had to do it all over again I would do it with HER by my side. THANK YOU SHANNON ! BEST DOULA EVER !

Getting to have Shannon at my birth was amazing. I had made a commitment that I wanted a natural labor and birth.  My husband and I had had fertility issues and when I was about 3 months pregnant he was diagnosed with a terminal kidney disease.  This means we may not be able to have more children.  I wanted to feel and expereince everything with my husband since we weren't sure we would get this experince again.  I went into labor 2 weeks early and it was a whirlwind!  I began making my calls to my husband, my family and to Shannon.  My doctor knew how important it was for me to have my doula with me for the birth so as requested, she simply kept an eye on me in my early stages of labor and I kept in contact with Shannon over the phone.  Shannon arrived a few hours later with her big bubbly personality and huge smile and warm hugs! It was a welcome relief!  We realized as I transitioned that my baby was OP (face up) and things got extremely intense and extremely painful.  Shannon kept me and my husband calm and focused and gently reminded me why I chose this route.  I know if it hadn't been for her encouragement, I would have not have stuck to my birth plan since the labor and pushing was very long and much more emotional than we anticipated due to the babies position.  After an hour and a half of hard pushing our baby girl arrived!!  Shannon remained with us in the post delivery days with some check ins and lots of help nursing.  She helped us start our nursing jorney off strong, and it has continued strong, thanks to the foundation and help she gave in those vital few weeks after delivery.  Shannon has a natural caring personality. She is able to incorporate gentleness and tough love, with well timed jokes, to keep you both focused and distracted. This makes her approach to labor and delivery truly unique and hard to find. She is like the sister you never had, but always wanted!

I met Shannon when I was 38 weeks pregnant with my first baby, the day that I found out my baby girl was breech. Right away, she provided me with comfort and support. Like most moms-to-be, I had pictured what my labor and delivery would be like, and I had not thought of the possibility of a cesarean. She did not give up hope for me to be able to deliver vaginally, and she was so full of resources about breech babies. She provided me with many methods and techniques that are known to be successful to try to turn the baby, rather than just scheduling a c-section immediately as the doctors suggested. There were home remedies and acupuncture, along with the external cephalic “version” procedure. She was very knowledgeable about the version, including the risks, and helped me to be able to make an educated decision on whether to have this procedure, which I ended up doing. After giving it every attempt that we knew how, I came to terms with having a c-section, as the most important thing for all of us was to get the baby here safely, and keep me safe, no matter how my daughter arrived. As I was preparing mentally and physically for the surgery, Shannon helped ease my fears by sharing options with me and educating me on what I could expect. She let me know there were still options and decisions for me to make surrounding my daughter’s birth, even though my birth plan was out the window. On May 25, 2018, my baby girl arrived safely and that’s what mattered most!

Shannon was a lifesaver after my first daughter was born. She saved my breastfeeding relationship with my firstborn. Without her, I would’ve had to bottle feed (which is fine, but wasn’t My first choice). I was literally minutes away from giving up, after trying to nurse her for a week, without any luck When Shannon showed up at my house. She went above and beyond, as she always does by calming my nerves, bringing a nipple shield and baby gifts, but best of all within minutes my baby was nursing. I cannot recommend Shannon enough. If you’re looking for a kind-hearted, down to earth yet extremely knowledgable miracle worker, Shannon is your girl!

Literally had the best birth!!!! Shannon was amazing and was able to keep the whole room calm as we were in the process of delivering my son. As a first time momma I had no idea what was happening or what I would need to do but with Shannon and my midwife they were able to take me through every step I needed to take and everything I would need to prepare for! My son came after only around 40 minutes of actual pushing, and after I had him Shannon was still there to help me figure out nursing and to make sure I was adjusting. Shannon was the best doula ever!!!! I think everyone should use her! Whether you’re a first time mom or on your 4th. Shannon is the greatest. She prayed with us before i started pushing, and I believe that if anything major were to happen that Shannon would have stepped in and helped us make an eeducated decision! Thank you so much Shannon!!!
