I wanted an unmedicated birth, and after speaking to almost all the doctors & midwife at the office, I felt like no one was really listening. About a 3 weeks before my due date, I started to feel very stressed out. I didn't feel assured with my doctor, my husband just started school and was extremely busy at work so he wasn't the best support, so I started my search for a doula.
Thankfully I came across Novabirth partners and was introduced to Kim Marie Glick. After meeting her, I knew she was the calm I needed for the birth. I only got to meet her once before going into labor. When I went into labor, I stayed at home for as long as I could. I called the midwife to let her know I thought it was time, even though my contractions were irregular. The midwife told me to stay home and to come when they were regular. I called Kim and told her how I tought it was time and she assured me to go with my gut feeling. I ended up going to the hospital, so when I arrived with irregular contractions still, I was already 7 cm dilated. I called Kim and she arrived quickly.
While laboring at the hospital, Kim was so supportive and had all these ideas to relieve as much as she could when I had a contraction. She was calm, she was there the whole time, and she helped me through the toughest moments as I began to doubt my ability to birth naturally. I was able to achieve the birth experience I wanted because of Kim. She followed up and offered to come check on me post natal, however I felt good and back in the swing of things. Had I not had her there, I really don't think I could say the same. I'm the type of person to do things myself, not wanting help, but in this case, I needed every bit of Kim's help and so thankful I didn't rely on just the midwife (or my husband =P).
My husband and I highly recommend Kim, and we are especially well qualified to speak about Kim because we spent over 50 hours with her during our very long birthing process! She was by our side every hour--including through the night for several nights-- staying well beyond what was required of her. She provided tips on positions that might help the baby move down and did the positions with me when my husband needed a break. She massaged, encouraged, provided her perspective on our options in a non-pushy way, helped me stay focused, and was generally a great person to have around during our birth. From our prenatal meeting to the birth to the post-partum checkup we have always been so impressed with her expertise, warm personality (which is a must if you're going to spend 50+ hours of labor with someone!), and focus on helping us achieve the birth we hoped for. We had been planning for a natural birth using the Hypnobabies method, which Kim is trained in. In the end, our little girl needed to come out via c-section, but we were still grateful to have Kim. It gave us the assurance that we did everything we possibly could to try for a natural birth and in the end we were at peace with the process our child needed. She's just dynamite! You'd be lucky to have her as your doula!
Moreover, the company she works for, NOVA Birth Partners, is a fantastic organization. Their owner, Faith, is a nurse and is deeply knowledgeable about all aspect of the birth process. Before my emergency induction, she got on the phone with me (with no notice and during what I believe must have been bed/bath time for her kids though I never heard them in the background) and talked with me at length about the process and provided tips on how to make the induction as supportive of natural birth as possible. She is wonderful! We also took a Spinning Babies class through NOVA and loved it. The whole team is fantastic. Five stars! Thanks Kim and NOVA!!!
