Attends hospital births? All Hospitals
I have lots of hospital experience, and have been privileged to work alongside some wonderful doctors and nurses. For parents who find that they need to make a change of plans from home to hospital birth for reasons beyond their control, I bring lots of experience in helping to make that transition a positive one. I serve BC Women's, St Paul's, Lion's Gate, Richmond, Burnaby and Royal Columbian hospitals.

Home birth has a special flavour to it, and I've been pleased to assist for many of the growing numbers of families who are choosing this option. There's nothing like tucking the brand new family in to bed while I tidy the house and make them something yummy to eat!I'm pleased to announce that, with a small additional fee of $30, our doula package now includes rental of a birth pool and full kit (you need to buy your disposable liner separately). Unlike other birth pool packages that come with doula services, our birth pool is available for you to keep in your home starting in week 37, so you don't have to worry that your doula might not be able to arrive with it when you need it (if, for instance, she's at another birth during your early labour), or that it might not be available at all (if someone else just finished using it and it hasn't been properly sanitized yet). We have four birth pools to choose from, so scarcity isn't a problem.I only attend midwife-assisted homebirths.

We had an incredibly positive birth experience and Aimee is largely to thank for that. She offered poses and amazing massage during my labour that provided a huge relief from contractions. (Her massage did more for me than the laughing gas!) From my first contraction with Aimee at my side, I knew I could get through the more intense part of labour. She works incredibly hard to provide the best care possible and at times I wondered if she was working harder than I was to get the baby out! She also offered a lot of poses and techniques to try and spin my baby who was slightly posterior -- in the end, baby was in ideal position and I did not have any tearing. Even a nurse in the hospital said, "Aimee goes above and beyond; you're very lucky." My husband tells everyone that the doula was really for him because Aimee relieved him from fear and anxiety he would have experienced without her calming presence and expertise, but trust me, Aimee and what she does is nothing short of a godsend for an expecting mom. We were also pleasantly surprised by Aimee's follow up and attention to us during the first couple weeks post partum. We can't say enough positive things about Aimee and truly hope that everyone has as positive experience with their doula as we did -- it made a world of difference on the most memorable day of our lives.
I also got to know Aimee's partner Aleksandra in a prenatal class (offered through the Childbearing Society) and Aleksandra is pretty awesome too. I would happily have either by my side.
I called Aimee to come and help me with postpardom overnights when my husband went back to work. Although she was unable to come out to my area (Port Moody) due to other commitments to clients, she still took about 10 minutes on the phone with me just to learn about me and my baby and my situation and what I was looking for personality-wise in a doula. She called around to many different doulas that she thought would be a good fit for me to see if they were available for me. I dont know how much time this took her to call around and to explain my story to each one, but I was not even a paying client and she went to work on my behalf to find me help. Shortly after I reecived a phone call from a local doula who was able to take me on and she has been great. I really appreciated that Aimee took time and energy to help me out, this was totally above and beyond!
Aimée is a calm, curious and empathetic person who loves babies and the people who bring them into this world. My husband and I knew immediately upon meeting her and her doula partner, Aleksandra, that they were the fit for us. When I asked in our interview, "How do you feel about my mom being present for my birth?" she promptly responded with, "How do YOU feel about it?" confirming for me that Aimée had my interests at the forefront of our time together. The value of Aimée's service absolutely justified, if not exceeded, the fee. We met in person, and spoke several times on the phone, in the lead up to birth. My daughter was breech from 30 weeks and Aimée was invaluable in helping me consider my preferences for attempting to turn baby and then navigating the many paths which my breech birth could take. She gave me information I didn't realize I would value so much - the logistics, options and my rights during of a cesarean birth. During labour, she was a constant advocate for our preferences, often asking questions of the OB that we forgot to ask. Her presence was gentle and reassuring. She is physically very strong and both my husband and I were grateful for this strength when it came to offering counter pressure on my hips during contractions! After hours and hours of attempting to deliver vaginally, I faced a very intense reality in the OR and Aimée was right by my side, reminding me of my courage and strength. She even provided my husband and I handmade OR caps that made everyone smile and which gave our birth photos, which she candidly captured, a uniqueness I couldn't have imagined. After birth, once home and attempting to breastfeed, Aimée spent several hours with us, helping me find new comfortable positions so my small baby could feed. Numerous times in my immediate postpartum days we spoke about my mental and emotional health, and this is where her empathy skills really shone!
My OB gave a glowing recommendation of Adar Birth Services. We were drawn to the added value of extra supports they include in their package. In the interview Aimee and Aleksandra made a great impression! They spent a great deal of time graciously prepared to answer our many questions. I walked away assured that this was an excellent fit and feeling really excited and confident about my birth experience to come. Right away I engaged in all the mommy groups and relaxation classes. What an excellent resource! I learned more from these groups more than I did from prenatal classes! Guest speakers taught us about everything from pelvic floor health, to newborn photography and baby wearing. Meeting face-to-face with other moms and moms-to-be was one of the best ways I could have spent my time preparing for motherhood.
Aleksandra was on-call the evening that I went into labor. She was my rock. She was invaluable. If she had charged $5,000 I would have paid it. She knew just what to do, where to be, how to touch my back exactly where and how I needed it. I don’t think any partner experiencing this for the first time could possibly anticipate what you need in that moment despite all their best intentions and efforts at preparing. She helped me breastfeed immediately. This allayed one of my greatest anxieties – that I might experience difficulty breastfeeding as some moms do. The follow-up visit was almost as valuable as the birth support! Who knew how many questions pop up AFTER you have the baby! Having someone check in right away in the early days to just take a look at the latch and tell me “yes, it’s good” was a big relief. I would hire Adar Birth Services again in a heartbeat. I would feel just as confident if Aimee Sturley were on-call for baby number two. They are both warm and wonderful women who showed a true appreciation, competence and respect for what they do. If you are looking for a doula, go with Adar Birth Services!
I would, without hesitation, recommend Aimee as a birthing doula. She attended both homebirths of my children, the first in 2014, and the second in 2016. Aimee exudes calmness and confidence; she knows when to step in and assist, and when to step back and allow the process to progress. She provided essential information prior to birth, which helped us craft our ideal birth plan.
With both births Aimee was the first of our birth team to arrive at the house, the first in the middle of the night, and the second on a sunny Saturday morning. Having her there provided such a sense of relief; she gave essential support, coaching me emotionally through the stages of labour, and physically through massage and counter-pressure (this woman has magical hands!). She also turned our first son from transverse to head-down, which was just incredible! With our second birth, she encouraged us to ask more questions of the midwives when some minor issues arose, which, when given the additional information, safely allowed us to avoid a transfer to the hospital. Her presence was invaluable for my husband, showing him techniques to help with my pain, and being an advocate for us, so he could concentrate on helping me. Her skills with a rebozo, the essential oils, her training as a masseuse, her relaxed demeanor, and her incredible knowledge from attending so many births, make her an absolutely incredible doula.
My house was spotless after each birth; by the time she left the house, everything was cleaned up, we were fed, a drink and a snack was prepped for later, and we were tucked into bed with our babies. She was an integral part of both of our births, from the very first meeting, to the follow-up appointments. If (when!) we have a third, there will be no hesitation as to who we’ll be calling first; I wouldn’t want to birth without her by our side.
Aimee had such a calm and strong energy during my labours. She was an excellent guide for my husband to help me and had a variety of methods to help me handle the pain. She was so respectful of me and my birth plans. She was kind, caring and helpful. A great teacher for first-time nursing. An amazing coach! She helped make my birth experiences special memories.
Aimee was a wonderful match for us! Her experience as a massage practitioner as well as childbirth educator was invaluable, and her focus, knowledge, and caring but respectful demeanor helped me through the birth process in a way that my exhausted husband never could have. I used Aimee for both of my home births and I would literally NEVER recommend that a woman give birth without the assistance of a doula....ideally Aimee!
I would highly recommend Aimee and Spark Doulas if you are considering using a doula. Aimee has so much knowledge about the birthing process and especially when it comes to breast feeding. She was a huge support during my birth and made me feel so comfortable and confident the whole time; before, during and after the baby arrived! Aimee was always there when I needed her. I really appreciated how she would contact me right when I felt I most needed her or had a question about something, it was like she knew and I didn't even have to pick up the phone because she would always beat me to it and there she was! :) It was so comforting to know I had someone thinking about me, my needs and the needs of my newborn baby. Aimee definitely went above and beyond my expectations as a doula and I still tell everyone how I could not have gone through this experience without the incredible support I received from her and her partner. She really helped make my birthing experience a great one and I am forever grateful for her!
We were so pleased with the experience we had with Aimee during the birth of our eldest son in June of 2010 that we sought out her services for our second son's birth in September 2012. Both boys were born at home, the second being a water birth. As we have no family in the area, it was very important to us to have someone both myself and my husband felt comfortable with and who was able to guide and support each of us in this amazing experience. Aimee's calmness, knowledge, support and hands on assistance was a huge benefit to both of us. The pre and post birth support was exactly what was needed at the time. Aimee cleaned up after the birth and made me a yummy post-birth meal which was exactly what I needed after all that work. I would definitely recommend Aimee to anyone looking for a doula.
We were so glad to have Aimee available during our preparation for the birth of our twins. She helped answer many of our questions and was a source of support. She and my doctor worked well together at the hospital and everyone was very comfortable with each other. We recommend her highly!!
We highly recommend Aimee as a doula. She struck the exact balance between competent and casual that we needed for the birth of our first child. Due to her expertise (and impressive upper body strength!), she was able to flip our son from sunny-side up to the correct position for delivery. As a birth partner witnessing labor for the first time, I relied heavily on her reassurance and advice during my wife's labor and delivery. She also takes great photos, cooks breakfast, and cleans up after the home birth!
Aimée was a wonderful support during the birth of my daughter. She was calm and kept me comfortable by talking and managing contractions throughout my labouring. She was the one who called the best time to go to the hospital and consult my midwfe- which turned out to be just the right call. Her knowledge and the techniques she applied made my labour easier to bear. What a difference between my first labour and delivery (without a doula) and with Aimée! My husband and I were extremely pleased and would recommend Aimée to anyone who was considering having a doula for childbirth.
We knew Aimée was the doula for us when we met her back in the early aughts, right around when she had started working as a doula. She is very gentle, compassionate and knowledgable (my spouse's exact words); when we got pregnant, we searched to connect with her again, and incredibly fortunately for us, she and her partner had an opening and served the area we live in.
The defining thing Aimée is that she is very good at offering quality unbiased information about your choices, without pushing her view point. As another reviewer mentioned, talking to her feels like you are talking to an old friend. She also has a very calming presence; these things together lead to her holistic approach to birthing, which, as first time parents, we were and are grateful for.
Aimee was very helpful throughout my entire labour process. Prior to when the labour began Aimee was a great resource for information, techniques, and emotional support. Her calm, confident demeanor was incredibly comforting during labor, and she worked well with my family members who were also assisting with the labour. She guided them with the application of labour techniques and encouraged them to take an active role in the process. Her knowledge and experience helped me to make the right decisions, and her careful observance probably prevented a serious labour complication as the other medical staff were unaware of the advanced state of the labour and might have missed the baby on his way out. Post-pardum Aimee provided excellent support in the form of post-birth counselling and information on caring and tending for baby. It was by her advice that I went to the clinic to be checked for mastitus, even though my discomfort was slight, and was found to, indeed, have the infection. I was going overseas the next day, and was thus saved from what could have been a very painful and distressing experience in a foreign environment. I highly recommend Aimee for anyone looking for labour support.
