The first time we met Colette, it was in the labor and delivery room.  Our chosen doula had suddenly become ill, so Colette subbed in.  On my way to the hospital, I initially didn't want her to come at all since we had never met, but my husband convinced me to give her a chance. While I was in early labor, she spent several hours texting with us and checking in to see if/how things were progressing. When I eventually decided I needed her support, we called her, and she was already on her way.  When she arrived, she was warm and did a great job getting to know me and my husband while I was still capable of having a conversation.  She did some light massage which felt good and which made me more comfortable with her.  We did low-intensity work together for a few hours, which was important once the real pain set in.  I was determined to go without an epidural and had sought out a doula to specifically help with pain management, and that's exactly what Colette did.  She knew what to massage and when, talked me through my breathing patterns, and showed me various birthing positions to get me through each contraction. Colette got me through the waves of contractions as they got worse, and as I became more frantic and directive, she was doing magic doula things that somehow helped. I can't explain what she did that made it feel better, but I'm glad she was there to do them. Massage, talking through pain, encouragement, coaching me on breathing and moaning -- if Colette hadn't been there, I don't know how I would have gotten through natural childbirth. I ultimately got the birth experience I wanted -- it felt like running a marathon, and Colette was my personal trainer alongside for the whole 26.2 miles, until we crossed the finish line.  Even though she has less experience than other doulas and is quite deferential and respectful of others' experience, I'm really glad that we got Colette as our sub.
