Riss has been a joy to work with. They have been an incredible asset to our family during post-partum, offering useful advice, caring, open-minded support, and much needed sleep.
We hired Riss as a post-partum doula a few weeks after our daughter was born and they've come 2-3 nights a week for the past few months. Every interaction with them is helpful and comforting. They advised us on everything from bottle feeding to managing reflux to what's "normal" newborn behavior, provided recommendations for fantastic specialists when needed, and were a pleasure to have in our corner during a difficult time. They are responsive, flexible, easy to work with, and bring a calm, joyful energy. I couldn't recommend them more highly.
We are so thankful for Riss! Without any family in the area, and COVID meaning no visitors, we had nighttime support a few nights a week from Riss for our baby from about 6 weeks to 3 months old.
We are so appreciative with how observant and knowledgeable Riss is. They identified that our baby had an eating challenge and advised us to see a doctor. She was diagnosed with a lip and tongue tie. We might not have ever known since she was still an ok weight percentile! But thanks to Riss we got it taken care of so baby can thrive!
Riss also answered so many of our first time parent questions, supported us and our decisions, and was such a light in our lives during this crazy time.
Initially I chose Riss because I wanted a queer-friendly doula but it turns out they were that and so much more! Riss helped me feel considerably more comfortable with my changing body. They were there to support me not only during labor, but pre- and post- partum as well.
For example, I decided to exclusively pump to feed my baby. Riss helped me feel confident in that decision before I got to the hospital. I showed up with my pump, some pre-expressed breast milk, and a plan. They made sure all the nurses know what I wanted and that no one pressured me to chest-feed. When I was having some trouble expressing enough milk after the first week home, they gave me advice and made sure I connected with a lactation consultant.
Riss helped me navigate my journey through gestational diabetes and my eventual decision to get an induction for the baby with facts and an openness to me guiding my own pregnancy and birth.
Not only was I enamoured with Riss's warm personality, but so was my husband and all of the hospital staff!
10/10 would "doul-again"!
My family had a fantastic experience with Riss as our postpartum doula, and I feel confident and knowledgable as a new parent thanks to their support! My husband and I were feeling a lot of anxiety about being completely on our own after bringing the baby home from the hospital, and working with Riss helped ease that anxiety significantly.
I really loved Riss’s approach to advice and support - they offer thoughts and opinions in an extremely non-judgemental and open way, and this helped encourage me to be less judgmental of myself. They’re very encouraging and positive, and helped my husband and I realize that we were way more capable of taking care of this new tiny human than we thought. Riss truly takes on board your preferences as parents and both validates and works with them, and it’s very clear that they are passionate about their role as doula in both support and education. We learned so much in every conversation with Riss, even without asking direct questions (although they also answered our many questions too!). My husband still uses a specific hold they taught him to calm our baby down and it works like a charm! We both also frequently reference things Riss taught us and remind each other of reassurances they gave us.
We had Riss do both daytime and overnight appointments, and both were incredibly useful to us. We feel lucky to have found them, and highly recommend Riss!
Riss was essential to our family's postpartum success. When my husband gave birth to our daughter days after Washington declared a state of emergency due to the coronavirus pandemic, our entire planned support network of out-of-town family evaporated. Riss stepped up in a BIG way - making themself available for more hours than we'd originally booked, and treating both of us new parents with such tenderness, compassion, and care. They often walked into our home and asked "OK, have the parents eaten today?" or went directly to tending baby bottles, clothes, or all the million other things that fell by the wayside as we adjusted to parenthood. As the non-gestational parent, I was initially skeptical of what support a postpartum doula could provide for me, but Riss was so encouraging—offering gentle suggestions and information when I asked for it, and simply affirming and being a sounding board when that's what I needed.
Riss was also wonderful with our daughter, talking and singing to her (we still use a song Riss taught us as her bedtime tune), and overall being a kind, loving, trustworthy adult in her early life when the pandemic had tried to deny us that privilege. Riss also took COVID precautions seriously; they were comfortable having frank, honest conversations about risk factors and mitigation, and they were always understanding of our concerns and desire to keep our daughter safe. As a bonus, Riss was so kind and patient with our wild brood of animals, including two rambunctious dogs and the most vocal cat on the planet. I would hire Riss again in an instant!
We were so fortunate to have Riss as our postpartum doula! The birth of our son ended up being quite complicated and required extended recovery. On top of that my wife's return to work coincided with the onset of postpartum depression, so we were very much in need of support. Riss was fantastic - they were more than happy to help with tasks around the house, care for the baby so I could catch up on sleep, and encourage me to be more confident as a parent. The judgment-free and wholehearted support we got from Riss was a pivotal part of getting our family off to a strong start. We very highly recommend working with Riss!
We were lucky to end up with Riss. Riss was a backup for our primary doula. When my wife went into labor, the doula that we hired wasn't unavailable, so Riss came to the rescue. From my perspective as a father, Riss made all the difference in the world.
My wife and I went to the hospital around midnight. She was not in active labor, but was concerned with her and the baby's condition. The OB convinced us to stay in the hospital and induce labor. Riss showed up slightly after that. My wife struggled greatly during active labor, as there was an unknown physical condition (not discovered until the c-section) that prevented a natural birth.
By the time that active labor started, it was in the early AM of the following day, and I hadn't slept for a couple of days. Without Riss, I don't think that I could have given my wife all of the support that she needed. Riss actively supported my wife as she went through a great deal of pain and anxiety during labor. Personally, I couldn't imagine how any doula could have done a better job. Riss was supportive, caring, and helpful in every way.
I recommend Riss without reservation, and I think that Riss must be among the best when it comes to supporting mothers that may experience high levels of anxiety during all aspects of childbirth. Whenever I felt overwhelmed trying to support my wife, Riss was right there to help.
When I was pregnant with my second child (7 years after my first), and my partner was going to be a first time parent we decided we wanted some extra support. Riss met with us and immediately made us feel comfortable. From the very beginning we leaned on Riss for ideas on how to smooth the transition from only child to big brother for my son and he still uses one of the breathing techniques they taught him. We learned I would need to have a c-section and the while that was something I had done before it was new and overwhelming for my partner. Riss was fantastic when it came to that stressful day in the hospital. They were an anchor for both my partner and myself at times when we were too overwhelmed to anchor each other. We appreciated everything from the thoughtful snacks, emotional check ins, advocacy for our needs, and the all important photos to document that day!
When life became stressful with a new baby at home it was wonderful to have someone to turn to. We are glad we had Riss as our doula and appreciate all of the comfort and support.
Riss was an amazing doula for us. We were worried about finding a doula who would support us well since we are an LGBTQ+ family and Riss was super and went above and beyond for us. My labor had an unexpected turn when baby got tangled in his cord and didn't have enough slack to come out vaginally. Riss provided amazing emotional support for my wife as I was taken to surgery, I can't even imagine what it would have been like if they had not been there. Riss' presence made the difference between a happy birth experience and a traumatic birth experience. We are so happy with the support that Riss was able to provide through pregnancy and birth.
We aren't sure what we would have done without Riss’s help in the days after our daughter's birth! We’re an out-of-town family (our daughter was born via an amazing surrogate), so we only had a week post-partum before heading back home. Needless to say, being first-time parents in the age of COVID where in-person parenting classes were not an option, we were less than confident in our newborn care abilities upon being released from the hospital. We were able to schedule Riss to stay overnight for two 12-hour shifts as well as one 6-hour daytime shift. We had a list of “technical” items we wanted to learn (e.g. how to use a Boba wrap, clip nails, bathe, swaddle, diaper, soothe, etc.), which Riss gladly covered. In addition to the technical knowledge we gained, what we found most beneficial was the confidence Riss helped instill in us that we are more than capable of being parentsJ They provided the encouragement and reassurance that we needed, and they were able to reframe and help alleviate some of our new-parent anxieties. We are extremely impressed with their overall family care - i.e. not just helping care for our newborn, but also us as (somewhat stressed out and sleep-deprived) parents! Riss made sure we were rested, had eaten, and that we learned the importance of divvying up tasks and taking naps whenever possible so that we can be the best parents possible to our daughter. Riss was very conscientious and accommodating of our schedule and also wore a mask at all times in light of the current COVID situation. We feel that working with Riss truly was one of the best investments we could have made for our daughter’s future. We highly recommend Riss as a post-partum doula!
We hired Riss for postpartum night care for our preemie twin daughters. We did this after a challenging pregnancy and NICU stay and in the middle of a pandemic, so you can imagine that this was not the easiest low-stress process. Despite all that, Riss immediately made us feel comfortable and was obviously worthy of our trust (at a time when trust in health and safety was so incredibly valuable). All that before they started taking care of our daughters. Newborn preemie twins at night is a big challenge, but you would never know it to talk to Riss. They always took excellent care of our daughters and we were always met by two happy babies in the morning. We thought Riss was so terrific that, when they had to leave for a previous client commitment, we hired them back as soon as they became available! We cannot imagine how we would have made it through twin babies in 2020 without Riss. You would be lucky to work with someone as caring and conscientious as Riss Jursich. We certainly were.
Riss was an amazing doula! Calm, confident, and with a sense of humor, we knew immediately that Riss was a great fit for us. I felt reassured and supported throughout the pregnancy, during labor, and postpartum. I especially couldn't imagine going through labor without Riss! Riss was such a great support person, and helped my partner to be an amazing source of support for me as well. We can't recommend Riss enough.
We interviewed 3 doulas to find a good fit for our first pregnancy. We wanted a doula competent in working with queer/trans, polyamorous, fat families. Riss is a part of these communities and experienced in queer spirituality practices. Riss had a series of exploratory questions over the course of several weeks before birth that prompted important discussions and considerations, helping us get in the birth mindset and what that might look like. They were present during those conversations, helping us navigate things we felt like we should/have to do or what it should look like. They helped normalize our fears and set us up for birth. Riss attended our labor at home and they were super calm and controlled and knew precisely what to do without getting freaked out or scared. As the non-gestational partner, I would not have known what to do without Riss there. They were attentive and took lots of notes throughout the process. Riss also did a fantastic job of talking us through everything and including me, letting me know what specifically I was doing that was helpful and supportive. They walked us through several different labor activities and paid close attention to signs that we should go to the hospital. When labor escalated and delivery was coming faster than we planned, Riss was a grounding force and made sure I was able to be right there next to my wife for the birth of our child. Riss is forever apart of our birth story and we could not have done this without them. They have been checking in on us, offering suggestions for soothing and connecting us with breastfeeding consultants. Our family is extremely happy with Riss and all of the qualities they bring to pregnancy and labor/delivery support. They are wonderfully giving and knowledgeable and bring a level of love and care that made the experience profoundly rewarding. We cannot recommend Riss enough! They are terrific at doula work and an all-around fantastic human.
Riss was excellent during our prenatal visit, labor, birth, and postnatal visits. We only had one prenatal visit because I was induced before the second one happened, but we had connected so well during our interview and first meeting that I didn't mind missing the second one at all. From the minute we first began communicating via email, Riss was very relaxed and down-to-earth, but also completely professional at the same time. The first thing we noticed during our interview was that they put us at ease about having a doula (it was our first pregnancy and we were on-the-fence about hiring one at all) and gave us a lot of education and insight into what the experience can be like during that meeting. Once we made the decision to move forward, they were supportive of all our laboring and birthing choices, offered ideas and advice when it was appropriate, and were very receptive to feedback about what was working for us and what we wanted to try differently. We cannot recommend them enough.
Riss was absolutely fabulous with my fussy 6 week old daughter. She was able to accommodate a very last minute request for help and was able to soothe and care for her while I got some much needed rest. We very much appreciated all the additional things she helped with too - dishes, letting the dog out, and helping with sleep advice. We would request her help again in a heartbeat!
Riss was amazing with our son! I was amazed how quietly and confidently she moved around our home and how she was able to soothe him, especially while he was dealing with gas pains. She really put us at ease and provided a lot of helpful advice. Riss is definitely a natural at dealing with babies and we wouldn't hesitate to hire her again!
Hiring a doula is a serious task and Riss did an incredible job of meeting us where we were at every step of the way. We completed screening questions via email and Riss responded promptly and thoroughly. During the two pre birth meetings Riss took getting to know my husband and I seriously and made sure to understand our birth preferences and hopes. She had a wealth of questions that got us thinking about the process as well. Our babe was 4 days late and Riss was excellent at checking in via text. When I was in labor my husband called her when we were ready to have her join us and she stayed up until after the birth. We were beyond impressed with Riss' presence and assistance during the birth. She supported me through labor and also supported my husband. Riss provided ambiance while i labored in the tub making it feel more like a spa than a hospital. She provided suggestions of things to try and continuously encouraged both my husband and i to eat and stay hydrated. Thanks to Riss I was able to have the medicine free birth I hoped for. She even captured photos of our first few moments as a family of three that we will cherish forever. Riss is worth her weight in gold and was a viral part of our support team. My husband and I are so incredibly grateful for her and wouldn't change anything about our experience. Thank you, Riss!!
We only met Riss one time before I went into labor. I didn’t really know what to expect from labor/delivery or having a doula but having Riss there was incredible. She not only helped me thru my labor, which ended up being 65ish hours, but she also helped advocate for me when things went south with a dr At the hospital. She went out of her way to make sure I had everything Zach and I needed, and then went an extra mile after that! She helped me breathe, she massaged my back and hips, she also helped me breathe myself out of an anxiety attack in the midst of hard active labor as well. I am so glad I got the privilege to work with her! There’s no way I could have done that and got my natural birth without her help! It was long and hard, but she made it that much easier. If I ever have another child, she will be there for that one as well!
