Working with Carly Marie was one of the best decisions I made of my whole Pregnancy! Our meetings prior to “the big event” were informative, relaxing, and reassuring that my husband and I would have an amazing support system when the time came. When the time did come my labor moved so fast (4 hours start to finish!) that many would say I didn’t even need a doula - however, Carly was an invaluable contact during labor over the phone to keep things calm and when I saw her walk into the labor and delivery room just moments before my baby boy was born I had an immediate sense of calm and relief. I can’t say I couldnt have done it without her, but I can say I wouldn’t have wanted to. I recommend not only having a doula during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, but I highly recommend using Carly Marie Knudson during this incredible journey into parenthood.
My husband and I decided to hire a doula two weeks before my due date for the birth of our first baby. I'm so glad we chose Carly.
I wanted a no intervention birth, which I had been told throughout my pregnancy not to get attached to due to my "advanced maternal age" (41). I planned to labor as long as possible at home and knew I'd need support for that. However, the labor did not go as I had hoped. 11 days after my due date, my water broke. I was admitted to the hospotal but did not go into labor. The next day, I reluctantly got induced on Pitocin. I was angry and scared. Carly proved invaluable during this time, both for my husband and I. She helped reassure us, ran interference between us and the hospital staff and used hands-on techniques (massage, hip squeezes, shaking my hips, etc.) to help me through the contractions. About nine hours later, our son was born, without the need of an epidural or any other intervention. I believe this would not have been the case without Carly's help.
Since the birth, Carly has assisted me as a post-partum doula. It's been great to have someone so comfortable with babies take over for a few hours.
On top of being experienced, professional, and at ease under pressure, Carly is a nice person to be around. Which meant everything during the crazy, wild, intimate experience that I found giving birth to be.
I am so beyond grateful to have found Carly as our birth doula. From our first contact, I felt like she was a part of our team and truly was there for me during this whole process. As with any birth, unexpected circumstances arose and Carly helped us navigate some confusing decisions. She constantly checked in with me via text and phone as my due date grew near. This was my first birth and knowing we would have someone experienced at our side made me feel so much calmer.
Then the big day came! Carly came to our house and we headed to the hospital together and she slept by our sides while labor progressed overnight. She used tools such as massage, essential oils, comforting and encouraging words to help keep me grounded throughout. I had taken hypnobirthing in preparation for labor and birth and she was helpful in employing what I had learnt in my classes. Carly, along with my husband, were my literal rocks throughout, leaning on them for all 15 hours of labor.
After we welcomed our beautiful baby girl, Carly didn’t disappear but instead continue to check in and visit us in the challenging first weeks of new parenthood.
Carly is a gem who is persoanble, compassionate, caring and non-judgemental. Having her at your side for one of life’s biggest moments is a decision you won’t regret!
Carly was a great support from the beginning of the process through the end! As a husband new to the experience, and as just one person, I felt limited in the support I was able to give my wife through the labor/birth process, and Carly filled that gap. My, wife and I knew we were in good hands with her by our side as our (literally tireless) advocate and birth coach, and that peace of mind was priceless.
From the second we chose Carly we knew we made a great decision. My wife and I vibed with her right from the beginning. She made two visits prior to the birth to meet and go over the birth plan, as well as an emergency visit when we thought my wife was in labor. She stuck by our side throughout the whole labor and delivery (40 + hours) and kept my wife focused on going as planned with a natural birth. She is super friendly, knowledgeable, encouraging, and optimistic on every level. Its really hard to put into words how truly amazing Carly is. Not only did she help keep my wife calm and relaxed through every contraction, she helped keep ME calm throughout the whole experience. She is a remarkable human being with a huge heart and having Carly as our doula was an AMAZING experience.
Having Carly as part of our team for the birth of our first child was truly an amazing experience. I don't know what we would have done without her! I'm especially impressed with how well we worked together considering how late in the pregnancy we hired her (35 weeks)...and then baby showed up early! But her knowledge and professionalism really shown through in these less-than-ideal circumstances, as she was able to quickly adapt to my partner's and my needs through the course of a very long labor.
Perhaps what I appreciated most about having Carly with us throughout labor was how she kept me focused and present on what was happening at that moment. Carly kept my partner and I focused on progressing labor naturally, and appreciating every moment (even those painful contractions!) as something that was bringing me closer to meeting my baby. She also was great at helping me advocate for myself and explaiining why the doctors might be recommending a course of action, but always leaving the final decisions up to me.
I know my partner also appreciated having Carly there for the moments we had to be separated, like when the epidural was being inserted, as she could keep him focused and a little less worried about being away from me.
Post-partum, it's been wonderful talking further to Carly and getting more details about the day of our child's birth that neither my partner nor I were able to grasp at the time, being so overwhelmed from just having given birth! It's given me some clarity on my experiences, and helped me view the overall day in a better light than if I were just relying on my own hazy memories.
